Mignon (meen yon) in French means cute, darling which describes this little boite to a tee. The interior is largely a U shaped bar that has all the equipment to act as a tiny kitchen as well as handling all the drinks. There are probably enough chairs around the bar for about 16 people with no room for tables. The interior is dark with walls painted a dark, vivid royal blue. Coat hanger chandeliers hold an old fashioned Edison light bulb giving off a wan, xanthic glow. Candles & overhead high intensity lights complement the illumination. The inside accoutrements seem something from a thrift store chosen by a person with a certain flair for shabby chic. We were doing a bar crawl so after the nosh at Cole's I opted for a dessert wine, Moscadello di Montalcino, Caprili, Italia, which is a late harvest Moscato varietal from Toscano. This late harvest is sweet, smooth, slightly viscous with sweet scent of tropical fruit, honey suckle, and honey-like sweetness. Nice mellow dessert wine to drink on its own, or perhaps with "Mahón cheese which is a soft to hard white cheese made from cow's milk. Mahón is considered one of the most versatile cheese of Spanish gastronomy." A friend ordered the Prix fixe (pree feeks) for $25 which includes: a small plate or two charcuterie (cured meat), a Viande (meat), Fromage (cheese) or Dessert. 1) The mushroom soup was more like a potage, thickened with a bit of roux? smelling of button mushrooms, drizzled with a bit of virgin olive oil to add even more unctuousness albeit with healthy omega 3 oils. 2) Hanger Steak seemed slightly aged so the meat was softer, but also with a nice chaw & beefy flavour. It was a bit less than medium and finished with Beurre Maitre d'Hotel which is butter infused with such things as finely chopped parsley, lemon juice. Weiser new potatoes were probably baked with a brushing of vegetable oil to add a sheen. 3) Cheese plate of Mahon and a semi hard cheese infused with black truffle oil which were accompanied with honey, dried black figs, nuts, smears of preserved fruits. Another "wine" that went with the Mahon (mah own) cheese was Pineau des Charente, Chateau de Beaulon, France. This drink is a combination of grape must or juice & eau de vie which is a precursor to Cognac. It is extremely sweet and higher in alcohol (16%-21%) than wine (8%-14%). To me there is a ripe pineapple, grape fruit zest scent & flavour. A glass of Pineau des Charentes (pee noh deh sha rant) had to be shared by the 3 of us which shows how cloying this cognac style drink can be. Mignon is a civilized place where the background music is discreet, mellow, relaxing, and the volume is low. Nice place to unwind after a frazzled day, or going for a light meal with friends or solo. Unrushed, unhurried, spinning on its own orbit, Mignon is a nice respite from the loud, cacophonous, obnoxious new restaurants popping up like weeds where irksome noise is the mode de jour. read more

We had some time to kill after dinner at Wurstkuche, so BF searched to see if there were any wine bars near by for me to get my drink on. Score! Mignon was not far from us at all. The bar is actually a bit below street level, so I think it would be easy to miss, lucky for me I have killer vision when it comes to finding wine :) We were able to park directly across the street from the bar, which is metered, but just as we were about to pay, some man yelled at us from across the street and said it's free after 7PM. Thanks, sir! This place is tiny, dark, and super cute. The music was French and reminded me of the Hotel Costes albums, which I love. The bar is rectangular shaped and only seats 12. There are two small tables in the front that seat two. Between 6 and 8 PM it is Happy Hour and selected wines are only $5 a glass, and the beer is $1 off. I ordered a glass of the 2010 Inama Vin Soave which I really enjoyed, it was slightly sweet and very smooth. BF found a beer that he was happy with. We had a great time hanging out here. I also liked watching the cook prepare all of the food, many cheese platters, paninis, and salads. The food sounded, smelled, and looked great. Too bad we were too full to try something. When I am in LA I will definitely come here again and get something to eat. I really liked this place and wish it was closer to home! A quaint little hole in the wall, very dimly lit and automatically the most romantic scene -- candles, fresh flowers in vases. A small tapas bar encasing the servers inside the rectangle, adorned with countless variety of imported wine bottles ready to crack open. The server who I assume to be the owner served me and, to my delight, gave me a generous amount of rosé to start while my friend got a deep red. It took us a while to order on the menu, a lot of it being in French. I asked the owner what the best dish is and of course she suggested without hesitance -- foie gras. I ended up getting the fish plate, which consisted of a cutting board with a few small slices of lox topped with capers and a slice of white-meat fish with the skin, as well as heavy cream, some dijon-mustard kind of sauce, little pickles, a sliver of aged cheese, small toasted baguette slices and olive oil on the side. I asked for balsamic - a must. It was a delicious combo that was fulfilling and satisfying plus the flavor mixture and textures were perfectly balanced. My friend got the best grilled cheese she ever got. It was no ordinary grilled cheese, the cheese being a super-aged import. It looked so good the guy next to her eyed it and ordered it even when he wasn't hungry. I loved the ambience the most, sooo romantic. Customer service was... what you get in Europe. Eh. I had a bug in my wine, which got in there after she poured it and she explained it was because my wine glass is next to the flower and it attracts fruit flies - totally has merit. She hesitated before realizing I wanted another glass, almost suggesting I just deal with it. I stared at her and even contemplated dropping it just to drop it but she gave in to pouring me a brand new glass (wasted rosé, I know) so I was glad. The two ladies serving didn't give people much of a care while pouring and sipping wine themselves and chatting away. Price: $$ about $12 for my fish plate and $8 for my rosé. Over the years, I have been to Mignon a bazillion times, and I feel like it gets better each time I go. The restaurant itself is tucked away on a less populated corner of Los Angeles and Sixth (you can park on Los Angeles for free after 6(!) at the risk of encountering overly affable bums). Just a few doors down from the ever popular Cole's, Mignon is a league of its own. It is quaint, dark, and intimate- everything that you would imagine a wine bar to be. They have available seating outside which is really nice during the summer. The best part about Mignon? They have a running happy hour that is applicable every single day of the week which lasts until 8. Geez. Favorites during happy hour ($5 buckeroos a piece!): -French ham and brie sandwich: it is about a 6 inch baguette sandwich cut in half with this insane brie and melt-in-your-mouth ham. The bread is insanely good- buttery with the right amount of crunch. If you don't order anything else, order this. It is so good. -Oeufs en cocotte: these are eggs, baked with leeks in a cream sauce...and divine. This dish is so good. You scoop the eggs onto tiny slices of baguettes and each bite is crazy good. Their menu is broad to finger foods and especially specializes in charcuterie boards. Based off your choice, your board will be assembled with different cured meats and cheeses. Their selection of cheeses with the tartness from jam gave an exceptional flavor paired perfectly with the toasted baguette. And for more dipping preference, we ordered the baked eggs which took me to an unfamiliar place in my mouth. They have smaller French plates, sandwiches, cheese and meat platters, etc. We ordered the escargot, warm dates, and a meat platter. I was skeptical of ordering the dates at first, but was blown away after one bite! Never tasted anything like it, I highly recommend it!! A friend of mine takes me out on a surprise birthday dinner. It was my first time having tapas and i enjoyed it! The location of this tiny, cozy restaurant is on the corner of 6th and Los Angeles. Parking is readily available on Los Angeles St. For $10, you can park there until 2:00am. On what we thought would be a busy Friday night, we ended up seating ourselves right away. I enjoyed the bar style seating area. The dimmed lights created a romantic, upscale ambiance. There's no kitchen so you get to see your dishes being made right in front of you. We went all out and ordered the french ham and brie sandwich and the smoked fish plate. Everything was delicious but the fish plate was what stood out. I've never had fish served to me like this and it was absolutely mouth watering. It was a really good experience. I just cannot believe LA has a hidden gem like this. Came out on Sunday night (yesterday 8/26/18) for a late bite and some drinks. We were having a cigarette before going inside. Noticed a petite brunette (Gia Gaglio) come out of Mignon with a glass of wine being loud, trying to FaceTime with someone. Just as we were walking into Mignon, the same girl stopped us and asked for a cigarette. We said we didn't have one to spare and her response was "Whatever. I'll probably be making your food, but..." That's when we realized that she is an employee here and she was threatening us that she will be making our food and apparently may do something inappropriate to it. Her response was so unexpected and rude that it was still on our minds when we walked in and sat down. Was that statement supposed to be a threat? We'd regret not giving her a cigarette because she works at Mignon? We sat at the bar and ordered a couple glasses of wine. Still confused and offended at what happened but trying to enjoy our time there. As the other employee asked if we'd like food, the girl from outside had just walked back in and was unapologetically staring us down. When we said we would order food, she gave me a conniving look and smirk. That's when we knew that this crazy really meant what she'd said to us earlier outside. The long, rude stares lasted the whole time we were seated opposite her. As she kept drinking her wine and progressively getting more drunk and droopy eyed while checking her phone. I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened. But I've never met someone who power tripped so hard about being a cheese cutter who can heat up dates in a toaster oven. I have been going to Mignon for years now and enjoyed the food, drinks and ambiance. But after this experience I definitely will not be coming back. You've forever lost a customer. If I knew exactly what types of meat they were, I'd go into more detail, but I won't try to sound skilled when I'm not. Can I simply tell you that it complimented my glass of red wine to the tee? Mignon is exactly that...cute, dainty. This darling little (I stress little) wine bar has all the makings of a fabulously intimate evening. Sadly, it's not conducive to a group outing and since there were a handful of people in tow it wasn't the best setup to continue our high-energy evening, which was a bit of a Debbie Downer, but clearly that's not the venue's fault. We shared a bottle of rose and moved on our merry way. The walls have renderings of ties and the lamps are made out of hangers which is a nice throwback to the location's previous days as a tailor shop. I called on the way over and asked if they had beer (the answer was "yes"), however when we arrived there were only 3 on the menu. I probably should have been more specific, but if someone calls to ask about beer, I think it would be forthcoming to give a good indication of the limited selection. That's all. I really love the atmosphere of this place: Yelp check-in gets you a free glass of sherry or cider (please get the cider, so crisp and delicious). My full 3 stars goes to the venue alone. It's a small, dim, intimate space with a large counter with stools that surround the bar, meat and cheese cuttery, and the register.
