I came here in spite of some of the negative reviews because there was something about them that sounded illegitimate and suspect. I'm glad I did. Jeff is a a master mechanic and a regular, plain-spoken guy who is not arrogant and does not talk down to me or make me feel rushed or flustered. As someone who was a back yard mechanic for a long time, I would have to say this is one of the best places I've taken my car. I know I can do all the work myself, but due to the home owners association forbidding auto work in driveways where I live, I have to take it somewhere. Always get consistent and more than fair prices at this location. I would say that there was something I did feel like Jeff was trying to upsell me on (Saying my battery was going bad), and I ignored it. 3 months later, I lost my battery and had to pay AAA to come out and drop off a new one. Beyond that, I feel that he has never pushed me for things that I did not need. I've been going here for little over a year, getting my oil done on my old Ford Escort ZX2. I've sold the car, and now that I got my new 93 Integra a few days ago, I'm taking it down to get it checked out, and have an oil change and radiator flush done tomorrow. read more

Of course the person who says Jeff is honest is someone who knows him. I'm pretty sure everyone who said positive things knows him as well. Honest? I definitely disagree!! You should go here if you enjoy being RIPPED OFF!! We got a coupon in the mail from Midas offering an oil change and tire rotation for $19.95. Of course during the check up, the mechanic, Jeff decided break pads needed to be changed. He said it would cost $189 for two break pads including the 45 mins of labor and that was already with $50 discount. So we did some research and fount out it normally costs about $60 for brake pads and takes about 30 mins to change both. When Jeff called back he said autozone uses cheap brake pads and Midas uses top of the line so they cost about $60 (about right) and labor is $100 an hour. So even if it took the full hour, which it wont that comes up to $160 which is $29 less than what he quoted!! Assuming Jeff takes his sweet time and takes the 45 minutes of labor required to simply change TWO brake pads, it should cost $75 labor and $60 for parts, totalling $135!!! When this was brought to his attention, Jeff said "I'm quoting $189, I got a lot people waiting and I'm busy today.. I don't have time to back to the computer and check the price". Conclusion- dishonest, rude, and pushy.. Jeff doesn't feel he needs to value customers just because he's "busy". read more

Yeah, I'm on the fence on this place, and the Manager Jeff. I have taken my wifes car twice here, first for a Tranny fluid change in January, and last month (april) for an oil change...guess what he said the car needed on this second trip?? Yep, Transmission fluid needs to be changed....I confronted him and told him that they changed it a couple of months ago and he had a dumb look on his face and quickly tried to change his mind and said, "oh, then in that case, it can probably wait until the next oil change". Also, besides all the needless filter upsales they always try to do, they told me I needed a new battery and wanted to sell me one. I told them it was under warranty with Autozone, he tried to convince me that their batteries were cheap and to "be careful" I took the battery to autozone and told them what Jeff said, he tested it, it was at full capacity. (btw, they gave me a new one anyways, so good for Autozone and thank you). I sat in the waiting room with my wife and witnessed customer after customer being "upsold" cabin filters, air filters belt changes...ON YEAR OLD CARS! I felt bad for them and was disappointed at the way they try and cheat people into spending waaaay more money than they need. As I write this, Im actually not on the fence anymore, as I think about it more, this place is pretty shady. Im sure there are plenty that really do need these repairs, but come on, stop cheating those that dont just because you need to meet your quota. Oh, and if you tell him (Jeff) that you dont know if you can afford it at the moment, he will try and make you feel guilty by telling you his sob story about how supposedly he was homeless at one point, blah, blah, blah and he "knows how it feels" but then says something like, "its up to you, if it were me, I would take care of my car, just depends on how well you want to take care of your car". This is why people dont like taking cars to repair shops. I write this review today for an experience I had a couple years back. Went in for a standard oil change. Received a call stating I needed a cabin air filter, I told the shop don't do anything just the oil change, I'll discuss the air filter with you when I pick up my car. I show up and the air filter was installed without my consent. Bill was for $130.00, I was a young man at the time so I went ahead and paid it as I felt bullied into it. Today I changed the air filter myself, bought a filter for $10 that comes with 6+ filters, and it took me all of 1 minute to install. I will never return to Midas and hope readers of this stay away from them at all costs. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. And its all because of jeff. He is the most disrespectful person i have ever met in mt life. He is rude interrupts people when speaking hes condescending and just awful i have dealt with him a few times in person and in the phone and i cannot beleive he has not been fired. I took my car in for an oil change a few months ago and he tried upselling me all kinds of things i did not need. (I usually do all my own work when i have time/energy) he was saying stuff was bad or old when they were perfectly fine. He tried convincing me that my rotors were warped and that my pads were completely ground down and i had just replaced my pads and rotors turned 2 months prior!! Hes so arrogant he even pointed the pads out and tried to convince me that the pad material was the back plate and had no life left in them!!! Absolute liar i could not beleive what was coming out of his mouth. And when i told him im not stupid and pointed out the actual pad material and back plate he got all silent and told me i was wrong and that i was ignorant!!! He actually stood by his lie and told aŕ potential customer i was ignorant!!!! And to top it off the following oil change i did myself and my drain plug bolt was crossthreaded and gooped with rtv!!! To sum this up he is a liar he is utterly disrespþectful he thinks people are stupid and treats them that way. Stay clear of this place. I stopped in for an oil change the guy try to up sell me...I had to tell him 5 times no thanks just the oil change . He was rude and short with me telling me I need break pads and I could have serious accident the pads were so low...little did he know I knew he was full of sh*t because. My husband just changed my break pads the weekend before. I said again nope just the 19.99 oil change... he gave me a dirty look and said ok lady after I paid I told him I would not be back and about my new breaks...he said we don't need your business your 20 bucks... rude...rude a hole. It gets wose...2 weeks later I notice my car leaking oil and checked the oil ...none very low I was on vacation in AZ at the time so took my car to gas station there that does oil changes ...they told me I was lucky my car was completely out of oil because the oil filter was so loose they just tapped it and it fell off there was oil splatter all underneath my car...they said the last place who did my oil and filter changed was careless not making sure the filter was screwed on right... AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE! I brought my 1998 Toyota Camry to them sometime in the middle of 2016 for rear brakes. Not that I was having a problem at the time but I had been told previously by other shops that the rear shoes were getting thin and I did not want to wait until the last minute. Also, Midas was having a special so I thought this was the time. Well, I dropped my car off and a short time later I received a call from Jeff saying that the front disc brakes were also bad. That was odd since they were fairly recent. He said that the pads had "micro cracks" (???) and that one caliper was "frozen" on one of its mounting lugs. Well, not being an expert and not wanting a problem with anything as important as brakes I reluctantly agreed. He had given me what I thought was an acceptable quote on the phone but when I picked the car up the total was around $700! I asked why so high and he said they used premium rotors and shoes, which I did not ask for and we never discussed by the way. Feeling a bit powerless at the moment because I had to go I paid and left unhappy but with my car. A short time later, not sure how long now, I noticed a squealing noise coming from the rear brakes when just coming to a stop. This seemed to occur when I had driven some miles, as from Woodland Hills to Simi, and on a hot day. Also the hand brake came up too high and was ineffective. I brought the car back and they adjusted the hand brake and did something but I don't know exactly what. Some days later it made the noise again so I once again came back in for yet another adjustment. This happened 5 times total and each time they just could not get it right. Finally, having had enough, I took the car to BJ's Automotive, where I would normally go. They said the brakes had not been adjusted right, the drums had not been turned right (needing new drums again now) and the backing plates where the shoes rest against had not been properly lubricated. They fixed all this but with another $300 plus into brakes I was now over $1000 for brakes for a then 19 year old Toyota! The car was fine after that until... About a month ago I began to notice the noise was gradually coming back. I called BJ's and they said that it must be those "premium" rear shoes since everything else had been replaced. I am now about to spend yet another $300 to have those "premium" rear shoes replaced and the drums once again turned (reducing the life a bit more) for a new total of around $1300 for brakes in less than a year, for a now 20 year old Toyota! The car now has over 195,000 miles on it and until Midas got their hands on it I had NEVER had any problems with the OEM brakes that came with the car new. Jeff has been mine and my husband's mechanic for the last 6 years. Before we found him we'd pay $80 for an oil change and when my 99 Toyota started making a strange clunking noise we took it to two shops who found nothing and then we went to Jeff. He figured it out in about 10 mins. It was the bearings in the wheel hub assembly. We've been using Jeff ever since. Yes sometimes car maintenance is expensive but to have your car in and out so quickly and to know that the problems are resolved is worth every penny. We recently moved to Oxnard and even though it's a 45 minute drive and not easy to get there because I work 7 days a week we still take our cars to Jeff. And as for people saying Jeff is rude or not friendly I have to wonder exactly how those people treated him. He's never been anything but nice and friendly to both me and husband. I've recommended Jeff to everyone I know. About a year my co-worker needed everything done on her car brakes, tires, oil change, tune up, transmission service and because she needed her car done that day they stayed open until 8 pm to finish the work for her that's excellent customer service! read more

Love love love the experience I just had. I have a 2012 sonata and it was being brought in for the second oil change and I got a coupon for an oil change from Vons and decided let's try it. I hit an off day and was in and out. Usually this place is packed and I now see why. Jeff and his crew are AMAZING!!! They are so informative and talked to me about everything. Jeff and his crew even caught an issue that the dealership didn't see which was a leak in my timing cover. Now my car is 10 months old and he took it upon himself to bring me out to the bay and look at the leak so I could understand what he meant. He then made a note in the computer and when he printed out my receipt after they were done there was the note clear as day so that when I take my car in next Monday to the dealership to fix it the paperwork will be in hand. That is something you DO NOT see nowadays anywhere. I don't think I could say enough good things. Go there and experience yourself. I've been dealing with Jeff for years. He's always truthful and right up front with me. He always catches my when I'm trying to be cheap and he let's me know what will happen. Th thing is, I've worked on cars on and off for years, and I know a few things. Jeff has never tried to pull the wool over my eyes. Sure, he can be a bit short sometimes, but hey, it's an auto repair shop, not a boutique. He has to get the work in and out and done right so he doesn't always have time to stop and socialize. I'd discovered that Midas does dynamite auto repair when Jeff Patey, an honest mechanic who bought a Midas franchise in Simi Valley got me on the road with quick turnaround. Today I was at my wits end when I'd tried so hard to find a good mechanic in Encinitas. Once at Midas another great, positive, honest mechanic (also named Jeff!) is now as said Service Manager & went far out of his way to get me on the road in just a few hours w/o an appointment, & @ minimal cost for high quality work. These people are Fantastic!!! I have a 2000 Cadillac Escalade which failed the smog test for I needed a new catalytic converter, I received prices from Cadillac and just random people on the internet. I was getting quotes from 2000-1500! I took my car to Midas and they were unbelievable letting me know all they could fix what needed to be fixed and pass the smog check for only $500.00!!!! And what was even better they did it within 1 hour. They told me they would guarantee it would pass. After I drove it for 20 miles they told me to take it back and they would Smog check it for fee. I called them late Saturday wondering if I could take it for the Smog follow up, they told me they just closed but to come by anyway and they would take of it. And boy did they I show up and with in 5 minutes they were done, and remember they did this for me when they were closed. I took my car to Star Smog to get my certificate so I could get my registration and it passed with flying colors. I am so thankful not only did they save me a ton of money but they were so nice and helpful to me. Not to many places that would help you out when they have just closed. Probably the worst place I have ever f***ing been too! Jeff is the biggest piece of crap I have ever meet especially as a "business owner". I have taken my car there maybe 3-4 times for an oil change first time yeah he was trying to sell me brakes and cabin filters etc.. This is all stuff I can do on my own so I declined the service and stuck with the oil change and I can tell it irritated him. Went back the next time he wasn't there. Cool! Went back the 3rd time he was there and being completely rude as hell trying to convince me to do this and do that and I flat out told him dude... I can do this sh**t on my own I dont need it done. Then he said you know I charge $20 for oil change as a convenience i could charge more but i dont but you're ignoring your brakes they need to be done and I said that's funny I changed them myself a few months ago.. He was silent and tossed my keys on the counter and didn't even hand them to me or even say thanks have a good day. How rude is that...? I dont know what stopped me from jumping over that counter and kicking his fat face in. So I decided hey $20 oil change screw it I'll go back one last time (shame on me) maybe he's not there again and it's a great price. This last time was even worse lol listen to this one. As we were waiting in the lobby for my oil change he tells this older lady who doesn't know any better about vehicles and she drives a brand new Lexus. He says, "front brakes are bad and so are the rotors they need to be done immediately I recommend you do not drive it"! She says the car is brand new not even a month old. Again he was silent. So basically this jerkoff tried to yet again rip off another person and push products on to them that they do not need. This guy is completely disrespectful and rude ignorant a liar and a thief! I now go to firestone down the street who charge the same and are very good and polite and dont try to sell me sh**t! I've called corporate on this guy a few times. This place hands down is the worst. Costing me over $140 in repair from damage they did to my car during a simple oil change which he had no clue what type of oil my type of car took. Sure he was confident that he knew but someone he called had to tell him he was wrong. He just couldn't listen to the owner of the car. Someone who has had 8 of the same car over the past years. Seriously close down and stop taking people's money. A simple oil change and more oil ended up on my axle boot in three spots and I was told that the boot needed replacing and he even had the nerve to suggest I look at all the oil that had come out of the boot. Please since when is oil put in a axle boot of a 1995 Volvo??? He took apart my passenger front brakes on that one side expecting me to do the $300.+ job he quoted me. I just wanted a simple oil change and check the "Back" brakes, not the front. Seriously, Not very cool in the economic climate we are in. I hope people realize that mufflers perhaps he could deal with but there's a better place on Los Angeles Ave down the street but don't take your car there and don't buy into his statement that his work is cheaper than taking it to the dealer. The dealer wouldn't have cost me a front axle to have to be repaired elsewhere. Oh, and go figure I drive the car 40 miles before I get to him. no burning oil no issues. I leave there and drive 5 miles home and all I smelled from the time I left was oil burning. Car engine oil that yellowish green clear stuff he poured on to my axle which now had splattered all over the hot engine. That's what you call good business. I don't call it that at all. I call it lame. Find something you know how to do. Customer service isn't one of them nor is fixing what the customer asks you to fix without breaking something else. read more

my first time and definitly my last! i went with my bf to drop off our car to get service, i was greeted nicely and was treated good. until i got a call from jeff saying that i need a bunch of service done to or car! that we need new brake pads, transmission service, new motor mounts, etc... a grand totall of 3k estimate! so me n my bf came back cause i was very skeptical cause we just bought the car about 4months ago, from a honda dealer. he said, that my trans fliud is dark and gave me the "honda transmission sucks" speech then tells me that my front pads were crack (which really wasnt) then showing me the engine air filter and cabin filter that it need to be change cause original honda filters are not good. telling me that my front and rear engine mounts were broken. if they were broken and need to be replaces, im sure the honda dealership wouldve done it already. He was very pushy about selling me all the other service. so i brought my vehicle back to dealer showing them the checklist and estimate jeff made..20mins into the service i was brought back to where my car was and they showed me that everything is clean and nothing was broken and no work was needed to be done. only thing they mentioned to me was they stripped my oil pan drain bolt, causing my oil to leak. jeff was saying "i've been doing this along time, i managed other stores, blah blah!"..doing what!?..ripping people off?? also, when i declined the services his attitude towards me and my bf changed. like he didnt wanna service our vehicle anymore. i asked him how long was that mount gonna last since i didnt have the money to fix it(and its fairly new car) he, gave me this rude answer.."i dont know, how long it wil last but if you dont take care of it now, it will mess up ur car!" definitly not worth the price and service!!!! but if you like getting RIPPED OFF! this is the place for you! read more

Finally a good mechanic. Jeff might not be the most upbeat person but he is serious about doing his job, getting the work done, satisfying his customers and he prides himself on local referrals through his work by completing the work in minimal time. Jeff replaced my engine and warrantied the used engine and his work. This was the third engine, after local BJ's Automotive replaced my first engine with another bad unwarrantied engine, and made my life hell for months, juiced my insurance and ripped me off. Supposedly this guy was an engine specialist! Jeff was able to clean up the mess. He has worked on all 3 of my families cars, and I have had no issues with him. He is just a matter of fact guy, his prices are reasonable/fair, and are backed up with the Midas guarantee of excellent service. I was told and thought that Midas was really only for mufflers, and was hesitant about using Midas to replace an engine. My friend told me to try him, as she was very happy and always has been with his work and that they are a full service repair shop. Jeff has 30+ years of experience and he knows his stuff. I believe that he has the Midas touch, as when he fixes something it is fixed, not me returning again and again for one more thing like I have experienced in the past. I am happy that I finally have a good, honest, local mechanic. read more
