Absolutely rude and does not listen. I was referred to Steve's and called last week to see when they had availability for an inspection for my ford e450 triton v10 6.8l. Steve insists it's diesel 3 times over the course of our conversation and I keep telling him it's gas. Tells me to bring it in Tuesday morning. I pull in and he asks "what the hell he's supposed to do with that (van)" and claimed I didn't tell him what it was and said he assumed it was a truck. Speaks for itself here, apparently didn't even know what an e450 was and gave me attitude for it. It's one thing to not have the space to service it, I understand that, but it's another to be rude and unprofessional. There's clearly either something going on in his personal life he has yet to get a grip on by how upset he got by this situation despite him not going out of his way at all as we spoke for a minute tops, or he's simply just an angry old man. read more

I needed the oil changed in my car and I called up the shop and they took me right away. My mechanic, Dalton, worked quickly and, while waiting for an oil filter to be delivered, he searched around for a "jingling" sound that had been plaguing my car since I picked it up from a body shop 6 months ago after I was rear-ended. I can't tell you how EXCITED I was when he discovered that the control arm on the rear driver's side hadn't been properly tightened. Had my car in for service. Ordered some inside door handles online and asked them to replace the handles. The handles go in with one screw and a clip. Could change a handle 5 minutes tops. Labor is 65.00 per half hour. I was charged 260.00 for 2 hours. Don't trust anyone. read more

When I had an oil change at another auto repair shop, they said I needed to have my rack and pinion replaced at a cost of more than $1000. I call ahead to see if he can fit me into his schedule, the shop always seems busy, and I have typically taken my car in first thing in the morning. Steve is rad. My car broke down a while ago and I had it towed to a different shop in Thousand Oaks. There they told me I needed to replace the crankshaft, timing belt, and tensioner which would end up costing upwards of $900, even though I had the belt and tensioner replaced a year prior. They were totally gouging me. I took it to Steve and he informed me that the only thing that needed replacing was the crankshaft, and he did just that. Saved me $650!! Steve is a vanishing breed, a truly honest and extremely competent mechanic. My little Honda had a blown head gasket, got some estimates around Simi, everything from just a thermostat to the engine has to be completely rebuilt. Took it to Steve, he analyzed it and gave his estimate that was 1/3 to 1/2 the $$ of the other popular so called mechanics, that are really just in it for the $$. Recently I took my Honda Pilot in for a 100K service, (timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt). About two weeks later my car began to make a knocking sound so we took it back in. It was the timing belt tensioner making the noise. Steve replaced the tensioner and did not even charge me for the part or the work because he said "we should have changed it out when we did the timing belt but didn't, we thought it was okay". This place cannot be seen from the road. It's in an alley off Easy street. There is a reason a place that doesn't get any visual business from people just driving by, is still in business. I've taken several cars there and recommended friends. A couple of times the cost for a repair was too much (no fault of the mechanic's), and there was no charge for the diagnostic. I have never taken my car to a mechanic that I have trusted as well as Steve. He has quickly and accurately been able to diagnose all of my (extended) family's cars and treated everyone fairly. The shop is old fashioned in that you write your name and number down on a spiral bound notebook and he'll call you with a diagnostic or to tell you when he's done.
