Occasionally one comes across a small business owner who woefully misunderstands many of the basic tenets of operating a business, such as the value of customers and good customer service, and instead prioritizes unbridled greed. I found this to be such a business, where making every extra dime is prioritized over honoring their promises and treating customers' wallets with respect. Although the work was (to my knowledge) performed correctly, I wouldn't recommend this business simply because of their brazen attempts to nickle and dime me over insignificant amounts and the poor customer service. I had called to get a quote for replacing my spark plugs and was promised by the technician (Matt) that he would match another shop's price of $175. That includes one hour of labor at $98 per hour, plus 6 plugs (retail for $7 each) and the parts markup. I made a reservation for five days out and received no phone calls indicating that they would not be able to honor the $175 quote. On the day of the appointment, however, I pulled up to the service bay and Matt tells me, "By the way, I'll only do it for $180, not $175." In other words, he was trying to inch up the price by $5 after I took the time to drive there, assuming that I wouldn't drive away and start from square one with another shop. If they are already making almost 100% profit on parts alone ($7 retail x 6 plugs = $42; $175 - $98 labor = $77 parts charge), then how can't they honor their word and do the work for the quoted price? Why wait until the customer arrives, then inch up the price by $5? That's pretty much a slap in the face of the customer. I also had a state inspection done, and had to return a second time for completion of the inspection after I purchased a battery hold-down that was acceptable to Matt (I had been using a rubber strap, which passed inspection at the dealership the year before, but the tech at Midas wouldn't accept that). During the initial visit, the tech suggested I spray paint the new muffler I recently installed to prevent rust. Therefore, on my return visit, I brought a can of lacquer and asked the tech to spray paint the muffler. His response was, "Do you want me to just do it for free, or are you going to pay me to do it?!" I replied that I didn't have a problem paying for it, and he said "OK, I'll charge you the minimun, which is 1/10 of an hour (6 minutes, $9.80), BUT I'll stop spraying at 6 minutes." I said, "That should be fine, so long as you get it all painted." Then he says, "Well, let's just say $20 and I'll paint the muffler and tail pipe and spray it twice." Well, when I left, I retrieved the paint bottle and it wasn't even half empty, so I know he didn't spray for 12 minutes. Plus, the consensus among those to whom I've told this story is that $20 was way too much to spray paint a muffler, especially when I got over $600 of other service done (including three fluid flushes). When I called the store owner (Brian) to complain and request a refund of $15 ($5 for the spark plugs and $10 for the muffler), he argued with me for over 20 minutes on the phone, said "well, we have a business to run and are here to make money," lied about the tech having given me a quote, and basically made it sound like it was my fault for not leaving, instead of their fault for not honoring their quotes. He initiatially agreed to refund $15, but wanted me to come to the store to pick up cash or mail me a check, rather than simply refund it to my credit card. He said that he didn't "want to pay the transaction fee for the $15 refund." I don't think there even are merchant fees for refunds, but even if there are, what is the fee for a $15 transaction? Not much. That epitomizes his greed and pecuniary pettiness. Therefore, I simply disputed the $15 with my credit card company and easily won. The owner and techs clearly have an extreme paranoia that customers are asking them to do work for nothing, when in reality, the owner is exceedingly stingy and obsessed with not spending a fraction of a second doing anything without making a buck, to the point that it's in the customer's face. And, of course, if you question their obsession with money, then it's the customer's fault for expecting them to do something for nothing. Ultimately, they are penny-wise and pound-foolish. Go elsewhere, where the owner and techs are honest and not trying to nickle and dime the customers to death. read more

The folks at the MIDAS shop in Chantilly recently went out of their way to help me determine and resolve the problem with a 2011 Cadillac - air conditioner was blowing warm air and a week of 105 degree heat index was on its way. Also, the car needs new tires and they reviewed several options with me and gave me a detailed estimate for all, to help me decide. My daughter's Honda Civic needs the annual state inspection and a couple of things done in order to pass, so we are bringing her car in for a complete check. Any time you can find an auto repair shop that treats you fairly and honestly, with people you know you can trust, it's a good day. I cannot speak highly enough about everyone at this MIDAS store - it's the kind of place where you can bring your vehicle on a regular basis and not be taken advantage of. I have been bringing all my vehicles there for several years. They are reliable and most importantly HONEST, helpful & friendly. They never push unecessary services. I had the liars at South Riding Automotive fail an inspection on my car citing the engine mounts were broken. I took it for a second opinion to my reliable, honest mechanics Matt & Keith who determined this was not the case, saving me $800. Brian (the owner) is as fair and honest as they come and his awesome staff is a reflection of hios good business sense. I highly recommend them. I have been coming to this place for years and have always been very happy with the service I have received. One experience that really sold me on this place for getting any work done was when I was sitting in the waiting area when a woman came in saying that she had just had her emissions test done and had been told that she needed to have her tires replaced. Brian Shumate, the store manager, had a look at the car and told her that she still had plenty of tread on her tires and it wasn't necessary to do the tires just yet. I always feel like i am getting ripped off every time I go to an automotive repair shop but not here. They fixed my car in a timely manor ( have a 2007 corvette) the estimate was very close and I left feeling happy and my car was fixed the first time.
