I brought my new-to-me used car in today for a MD state inspection. I was referred to Ormsby Auto by a tag and title shop not too far away. I had no doubt my car, with just 25,000 miles would pass. When I arrived, they readily fit me in. It didn't occur to me that I should have had an appointment. Thankfully they took my car in while I had breakfast at a walkable distance McDonalds. (Their fritter is really good.) They said it would take an hour, but when I came back 50 minutes later it was ready to go! Wil gave me the good news, but said I should consider having my rear brakes replaced soon. No pressure to sell me on making an appointment, but because Wil was such a cordial guy, I just may come back here. We had a nice conversation, and I found out he's a former educator. My inspection was just $85, and the first step I needed to complete in registering my out of state car in Maryland. read more

Sometimes we forget to show appreciation for all the great experiences we have on a day-to-day basis. I have been a customer for about 10 years and Ormsby has seen me through my routine maintenance, new tires, new batteries, and every single experience has been a great one for me--even when I've learned that the cost of a repair would be more than what I had planned. I know nothing about cars, but these guys take care of me. Each time I drop off my Corolla, I know it's in good hands and I know I'll be treated more than fairly. You won't believe this, but when I arrive, it's hugs and handshakes all around. They know me, even though they only see me once every three to six months. They know my car. Mechanic shops are normally not the place where you're happy to visit, but for some reason, here I am, looking at Will, Frank, etc., like a return home. I stumbled across this shop by happenstance years ago when I needed a repair while working in the King Farm area. Having repairs done by the Toyota dealer were draining my pockets. I remember Toyota attempting to charge me about $300 to repair one thing. Me thinking I could get a better deal, I took the car to Ormsby who ended up finding 3 more things wrong that Toyota never mentioned. Ormsby fixed all the issues for the same $300 that Toyota was charging to fix just one. In a pinch, I've taken my car to Walmart for service because Ormsby was closed, then I had to take my car to Ormsby to repair the work done by Walmart. Never again. Today's visit was another great experience. My tire pressure light had been on, so I took my car to put air in the tires. A guy from The Lube Center walked over and asked to do it for me. He discovered two nails in one of my tires and told me it couldn't be patched or plugged. He said I would need new tires. Well, of course, I took my car to Ormsby expecting that I would need at least two new tires, but, no. They repaired the tires and even acknowledged my birthday, which is 2 days away. Although I wasn't on the schedule, they had me in and out within 40 minutes. That noted, the money I thought I'd spend on new tires, I can now spend on something amazing for my birthday. Three words: professional, welcoming and helpful. A recent move to the wonderfully expensive state of Maryland warranted a state inspection and trip to the MVA for registration. I scheduled an appointment and brought my car in for an oil change and inspection. Upon arrival, Frank warmly welcomed me and did a fantastic job of giving me a realistic time frame while assuring me that he was going to try his best to get the repairs done within a few hours to get to the MVA for the registration. Upon doing the inspection, Frank called me and let me know I needed to get the brake pads replaced and new wipers. I was skeptical at first of the fees, so called a few other auto shops in the area for quotes. I was very pleased that Ormsby's was the best deal (including parts and labor). The repair ended up taking longer than expected, since parts were delivered later than expected, but Frank and Will were both so helpful and informative throughout every step of the way. Frank did a fantastic job breaking down the costs involved and Will helped out with some of the repair cost since I ended up being in the shop longer than expected. Both Frank and Will were excellent, and definitely the reason why I will be back here whenever I have any other auto issues. They are incredibly kind and also just fantastically interesting people to talk with. During my few hours in the shop, I didn't see a single customer that wasn't warmly welcomed and taken care of. In reply to Frank, I do know how you "reached your conclusion", your inexperienced inspector saw the coolant I spillrd before showing to the appointment FAILED to be sure that what he wrote off as a broken and leaky expensive part, and just assumed it was actually a leak. Since no one has thought to contact me about giving me a refund, I have decided to make a police report in hopes to have this establishment investigated for irresponsible handling of peoples vehicle inspections. Don't let the smiles and charm fool you. I recently took my car here for a state inspection as they had good yelp reviews. Big mistake. After a few hours with the car, they gave me a call telling me that my car failed due to a number of reasons and needed new rotors, tie rods, and a number of others items to the tune of several hundred dollars. I almost took the bait but my husband was skeptical so we took it to a local dealership (of all places!) for a second opinion. The dealer completed the safety inspection and passed the car - noted that the rotors did not need immediate attention and when the time came we could have them resurfaced. Big lesson learned here - ALWAYS get a second opinion. Just because people are "friendly" and willing to give you a ride to the metro does not mean they are honest. This place turned out to be just another sleazy car shop looking to fleece their customers. My search continues for that one mechanic that I truly trust and rely on. read more

NOT RECOMMENDED. Here is my experience: I brought my car for inspection with almost 30K miles on it. They will ask you to add $35 if your windows are tinted, which I think that should not be charged. But I went ahead and pay them the extra money. Hour and a half later, I was notified that the inspection is failed due to the window tint. The rear glass was tinted 5 percent darker than the accepted 35 percent. I came this morning to reinspect after I removed my window tint over the weekend. The gentleman at the front told me that I have to pay additional $35. I questioned him about the charge as no labor involved and it's only a matter of giving me the result after a quick peek on my windows. He mentioned that the State of MD charges that fee. That sounds suspicious to me, so I did a research and found this on MVA's website: "A re-inspection fee should not be charged if the repair can be visually confirmed". I showed him this statement from MVA website, but he still insists to charge me the additional $35 with an excuse that the information I got from the MVA is outdated. Again, I didn't argue about that since I just need to get it done. The technician looked at the car for 5 seconds and rerecord the mileage. A few minutes later, the gent told me that it's passed and proceed with the payment. I asked if Frank, the owner is available because I would like to have a chat with him once I paid the 35 dollars. After I mentioned that, he changed his mind and waived the $35. In summary, they will try find ways to charge you unnecessary cost and drain your pocket. They will not hesitate to provide false information if needed, in my case is the reisnpection fee. I will go to somewhere else for inspection and will not recommend this place to anyone for MD inspection. My total cost for my inspection is $95 dollars. It was my fault not to read the other reviews thoroughly. I gave the extra star because the gent at the front changed his mind in charging me the $35 reinspection fee. read more

After 3 alternator/battery replacements in 8 months at Pep Boys, my 2004 Mazda 6 died. Again. On 495 at 9pm. I asked the folks at AAA to try and find me a place nearby that specialized in electrical work, and was towed over to Ormsby Auto. I got a call the next morning from the owner regarding the problems I was having (Gremlins in the electrical system stealing my electricity was my best guess at that point), and after about 10 minutes of detailed questions and chit-chat (very nice, talkative guy), he said that he would try his best to find the source of the problem. About 4 days later on Friday, I got a call that it was ready to pickup. Cost about a grand, and halfway home the dreaded battery light came back on again. I got home and told the wife, and she was on the phone instantly, reaching them just a few minutes before closing time. We wanted to have it towed back Monday morning for them to take another look. Ormsby insisted that they would come get the car immediately, and leave a loaner for us as well (this was about 8pm on Friday night now). So another week passes, we get a call that the car is fixed- my wife goes to pick it up. Total bill for the second repair: 0$. They fixed it. After nearly a year of electrical problem and nearly a dozen gas station mechanics and pep boys visits, Ormsby Auto nailed it, gave us friendly, honest service. read more

2002 Subaru Forester in need of a muffler. Also, "Check Engine" light lit: Midas - $650 with the additional warning that my 'check engine' light meant my timing belt was probably failing because my oil and gas were filthy! $1500 - $2000!!! (oil change 2 months prior). Meineke - $550 warning that my "check engine" light needed an $80 diagnostic to determine the extent of that problem. Ormsby Auto - "no more than $385 total for a new muffler" per Frank. He explained that the check service light would be checked (at no charge) but he also advised that it most likely meant that the gas cap wasn't tightened properly. Frank was later found to be right the "check service" light went out but he checked anyway. All was fine! Ormsby Auto - PRICELESS!!! When the car was ready for pick up, Frank said the final bill was $385. I remembered it as $355. Frank then said that if I was so sure that he would charge me $355, that $30 was not worth losing a customer. I later finally found my notes - he was right it was $385! I apologized and begged him to take the $30. He replied, "it is my holiday gift to you"! It is hard to believe that there are still businessmen around that are ETHICAL, HONEST, and truly value a customer like Frank Davarya! I'll be back to Ormsby, Frank! read more

Fixed my truck right, the first time. Five stars for the complementary loaner car! Brought my truck here after my check engine light came on with the code P0506 Idle Air Control System RPM lower than expected. Ormsby replaced my throttle body and mounting gasket, and my check engine light has stayed off since. As far as pricing, I paid Ford's MSRP for the parts, but I believe I recieved a discount on the labor. read more

These guys are legit. I came from out of town (texas) to get a state inspection because I moved here. I failed because my tint was too dark ( different laws for tint level in texas) They charge me $100 to remove all the tint. The thing is I had quality tint from the dealer so the one hour job took three hours. They gave me a complimentary car to go to work and did not charge me a penny more than $100. They did the job right, really nice people. The owner even told me sometime we lose money ( like they did on my car since it took so long) but that's ok as long as the job is done right. I started out having a very embarrassing moment at ormsby's where i was shamed for my tags being expired. This is my first car, the DMV didn't explain my extension very well, etc. etc. And as i've mentioned in other reviews i'm an hourly employee. Being told i had to drive my car away without an inspection because my tags were old and i would have to come back on Friday was not something i enjoyed hearing. However, when i came back on that Friday i had the opposite experience. Everyone was much happier to see me, they took my car immediately i didn't have to wait as long for a diagnoses, etc. Event he guy who noob shamed me was much nicer that day. Engaging me in conversation when he didn't have to. Unfortunately the diagnoses was over 2,000 dollars. I was blown, and not sure how i was going to pay for it. I have a 10 year old car, it's not worth $2,000 dollars, it didn't even cost me that much. To have a car for less than a year and then find out that it won't pass inspection was about to much for me to handle. i could possible afford to pay $600 for some repairs, work a few more weeks to save up the money for the rest of the repairs, and then come back for them. They saw me going through this turmoil of possibly driving this car without the updated inspection work until i could afford it and immediately offered me a payment plan, and a discount as a AAA member, and a loaner car. It was the biggest relief ever. I paid them the first $600 dollars that day, and managed to do some side work for extra cash while my car was in the shop. I had so much joy driving that loaner car around for a week, no one will ever understand. Even though i got my car a day late, it was a godsend because i was able to get extra cash and pull money out of my savings with out having to beg borrow and steal. I was happy to be able to pay them the rest of the cash, and they were really nice to me when i returned as well. They even cleaned up my stinky car. We have had two cars serviced here over the last three years, and when our daughter gets her first car, you bet we're sending her to Ormsby. From the time we begin working with them back in 2011, all staff and service-people have been honest, knowledgable and willing to make sure that we were happy with what we'd received. As a young couple with a child, safety is our top priority when it comes to our vehicle, and Ormsby Auto has always made sure that we are able to keep that value alive. What stuck out to me, was the fact that we brought our brand new Honda 2013 Accord in because EVERY SINGLE LIGHT came on. The car was only 8 months old...and when we brought it in, they insisted that we take it to the dealership instead; they didn't want to charge us money we didn't have to pay. I think this is a rare trait in auto shops, and I'm so glad we found them. Will the repairs always be cheap? No. Will you hear what you want to hear every time? Probably not. But know that Ormsby has integrity with all of their staff, and they are ALWAYS on time. Our oil changes are super quick, they offer you coffee and tea, a nice place to sit, free wi-fi, and even advice about ANYTHING car related. So far so good. I made an appointment and brought my 2009 car here for the MD inspection. The process was fast and they gave me an estimated time when it'd be done (1.5 hours). When I came back, the car was inspected, I paid the flat fee, and was in/out very quickly. Great group of guys behind the counter. The only blemish was the paper place mat they put inside my car (to protect shoes from dirtying the carpet). I appreciate the gesture, but it was torn to pieces when I picked up my car, and I had to spend some time to pick up dirty paper pieces underneath the driver seat and around the center console. read more

I am always worried about going to new auto shops just because you never know who could try to take advantage of your distress, but I have to say that the people here at this shop are just the nicest, straight forward and sweetest people ever! From the minute I walked in the shop, I felt very welcomed and felt really comfortable with leaving my car there. I mean given, I only got a state inspection but sadly I didn't pass and they were very honest as to why and even explained to me what needs to be done on the car and gave me a fair estimate. Also right before I left I asked the guy in the office if my car was making noise because of something that he mentioned that needed to be fixed and he wasn't sure but he got the mechanic to come out and look at what might have been making the noise. The mechanic came out, looked at it and fixed it really quick for me just to be nice! He really just screwed something back in but it was still really nice of him and he didn't have to do that. I got the oil changed for about $38. That included 25 point inspection and such. I wanted them to check the brakes in particular - in case they needed replacing. They told me the car was in great shape - not trying to up sell anything. I live nearby and they gave me a ride home and then back again when the car was ready to pick up. Also they are across the street from Shady Grove metro. It's close, but you wouldn't want to walk it in the rain. But they will give you a ride of course. read more

First, let me say the folks at Ormsby are the friendliest, most honest people in the car repair business. I have a 2006 Volvo with low mileage (under 85k miles in 10 years) I bought new from the dealer. I've since passed it on to my daughter in college. After years of service from the dealer, things suddenly became very expensive. I was quoted a couple thousand $ to replace my front bushings. These are just small rubber bumpers that protect the car frame from the wheel assembly. I declined and let it go for about 18 months. Eventually they failed along with the struts (apparently common in this model- S60) so I needed a fix. No way I was going to have the dealer do this because of $$. I have had Ormsby do some minor work before so I took it here for an assessment and quote. I do really maintain my car, believe it or not (bushings), so I had them include the mfg recommended maintenance in the quote. Simply, the total price was about half of what the dealer wanted for two rubber pads installed. Truth be told, when I got my car back I noticed the maintenance message had not been reset. I also had to bring it back after a day to have the strut bolts tightened. This is pretty normal. It took all of 5 minutes and they warranty all their work. The owners of this shop are so friendly, I feel I had a free therapy session! They are so open, friendly, intelligent, and conversive that I feel I have made new friends. I know the shop is just in an auto garage park, but that doesn't matter. I also get a very strong feeling that these owners and employees do what they do only because they love it. Perhaps that's how they keep the prices so low. read more

When was the last time you enjoyed bringing your car in for service? I had the best experience at Ormsby. The people at the counter are extremely friendly and helpful. When I picked up my car I noticed that the receipt did not include an oil change- which was on the list of what to fix. They were extremely apologetic and gave the oil change to me for free. I waited only about 20 min. and it was done. I highly recommend them and will be returning! They also give a 10% discount to AAA members. read more

I took my car to another shop today and they said they were trying to swindle me and being very aggressive. Dont be fooled by the smiles and charm, the low price of the inspection is a trap, pay more and get it done right the first time. The guys at Ormsby are great. They inspect your car and honestly tell you what has to be done and what should be done soon with all the prices and parts. Other mechanics I have been to just tried to sell me parts or services my car did not need. Since I work near Ormsby, they were able to drive me to work and back to the shop-door to door service. When they had to keep my car overnight to receive a part, they gave me a free loaner car instead of sending me to Enterprise to rent one as an added expense. I don't have a second car or backup driver so it was very important for me to have a car. You can trust what the guys at Ormsby tell you unlike most mechanics I have run into. I am a woman and have found that Mechanics love to sell women stuff they don't need. For example. Pepboys tried to get me to pay them $110 just to look at a timing belt in hopes that they would find an expensive repair, about $1,500 to $2,000. There was nothing wrong with it , it was not that old and it only took 5 minutes tops to look at. It was the 15 year old OEM crankshaft pulley that was wobbling and hitting the engine casing when the A/C fan was off. It took 3 minutes and a flash light to see that. Shame on Pepboys. In addition, the Ormsby guys will give you a choice of parts, when available, and won't force or take you into the overpriced parts on you like other mechanics do. For instance, you don't want a cheap part on a new car that you will drive for many years or an expensive part on an old car that will be a trade-in within a year.
