This is the perfect afternoon pitstop when you are hungry for something delicious. The food is fresh cooked so be prepared to wait for the cooking time of what you ordered. The food arrived hot and fresh. The portions were generous and everyone at my table, enjoyed their meal. I absolutely would return.

    Lunch Menu!

Good Food Everytime Fish Good, Collard Greens , Mac n Cheese Shrimp , Sweet Potatoes . Reasonable price and Large serving sizes.

I ordered the 5 shrimp and 7 Oysters... The shrimp and Oysters were very very veryyyyyy bland... Literally NO SEASONING! And got the nerve to be charging $18 for it! I like the dinner roll and the Mashed potatoes... The greens are midocre... I probably won't be back!

Soul food, seafood, and Chinese food all in one place... who could ask for more? The fry batter was a little disappointing on the fish and shrimp, but the baked chicken, greens, taters, black-eyed peas and other sides were all outstanding.

Food is great...no complaints there. But make sure you check your order...and how you ordered it. The seafood plates and combinations are all fried. Choices of baked, grilled and broiled apply ONLY to Seafood Dishes...NOT TO THE PLATES AND COMBINATIONS! Or so we were told by the manager when our order for grilled fish came to us fried, despite the fact that our order was taken specifically asking for "grilled". He apologized, but said repeatedly that those choices apply only to other side of the menu where Seafood Dishes are displayed. (Yeah, he and the cashier who took our order could have handled things better, but what're you gonna do...?) I think it is very reasonable to think otherwise, so I'm posting this review with the photos of the menu (notice the choices written in RED). And yes, we will continue to eat here knowing how to be sure to get our options grilled and not fried in the future.

Usually the food is consistent when i go there. But the clam strips i got this were not fresh and half of them were not edible. The other part of my meal was good and they served large side portions that i can eat I for the next two days. The flounder was good on the other hand!

After walking in (take-out only), and seeing that there were six people waiting for their food, I was convinced, this place CAN be trusted. So, staff, really nice. Informative, hospitable, and accommodating. As indicated, exclusively "Take-out," so not much attention given to aesthetics. All those waiting raved about the food. People there have been patronizing the restaurant for decades. Again, very good sign. Ordered chitterlings, potato salad, and collard greens. Initially thought $30.00 was a bit much, given I'd NEVER eaten chitterlings "out," BUT, thought about what it actually requires, and quickly changed my mind. The price point is fine. Everything was delicious. Everything. Including the Cornbread. Given I know how to cook, there were obviously some things I would have done differently. That doesn't even matter, this place is my "Soul Food" "go-to." If they can do chitterlings well, they can do anything. I can't wait to try everything else on the menu. I highly recommend.

An order includes 2 pieces, each of them a breast & sort of a small leg attached (yes, that sounds weird but it's the best description I can come up with). An order comes with mashed potatoes & gravy on the side + collard greens. We each took one piece of chicken home for a second meal. On the down side, we weren't keen on the fried green tomato appetizer. It consisted mostly of heavy breading. Next time we're going to try the catfish fingers instead.

While our server was great and very attentive, unfortunately, the food left a lot to be desired. For the evening we tried the Devil Shrimp which is crab stuffed shrimp that came with spinach and mac & cheese. While the stuffed shrimp were delicious the mac and cheese not so much. I hate to say this but it was a step up from box Kraft mac & cheese. The Grilled lamb chops were served with roasted fingerling potatoes and sauteed green beans. While the lamb chops were plentiful and we appreciated that, again the sides that accompanied the dish lacked flavor. To be an upscale Southern cuisine restaurant they missed the mark on some of the staples sides and that was a little disheartening.

I ordered three chicken wings (they were oversized - not my preference), potato salad, black eyed peas and one piece of cornbread. The chicken lacked flavor. It was just big and kind of greasy. The sides were fine. Ordered a piece of sweet potato pie to go and that was fine. The jazz contained a lot of talking. It was nice when they started playing line dancing music and there was a small area to dance. The dancing wasn't offensive or in the way...it was just right. Then came more talking. And advertising of a cruise, etc. It was okay, but I wish they played more music than talking. The same night, the restaurant attempted to charge me for a missed reservation fee ($5 per person). Luckily, I keep my AMEX locked. Weird, I gave my name to the hostess upon check-in. Wonder if that's happened to others. All-in-all, it was an okay experience. At that time, I was upset about what happened with George Floyd a week earlier; still in 2026, it was wrong what happened to Floyd (not to mention more recent news that happened in that city was horrible too). I hung out with a friend on that warm day having a beer outside his apartment in Takoma Park. He is a mega-leftist politically (I'm more independent), but said he wanted to support a black-owned business; I said that's a good idea; I might do that for dinner. He was doing his own thing for dinner, so I was on my own. So, I looked up on Yelp what was in the area, and I saw just across the border in DC, Oohh's & Aahh's. Staff was nice, and I got a fried chicken platter. As this was Covid times, there was no dine-in. So, I schlepped all the way straight up Georgia Ave 6 miles back to my home in Wheaton fairly quickly on that Sunday as I don't like my food getting cold. I think my food stayed pretty hot as it was well-wrapped, and if it had cooled off, I could always microwave at home. The fried chicken, mac n' cheese (my favorite vegetable...I know not really a veggie but a joke), etc. were all solid. If I was ever over here, I'd consider coming back; just so rare I go to DC these days.

It's in a shopping center, so nothing stressful there, and the restaurant itself is easy to spot. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was how clean, polished, and classy everything looked. Even though it was busy, it didn't feel chaotic. The staff immediately greeted me and asked if it was my first time which I appreciated. They didn't just rush me through the line; they actually took time to explain the menu, how the bowls are built, and offered samples. That alone made the experience feel welcoming and intentional. Now let's get into the FOOD. Everything looked fresh. They have about four rice options (which is already a win), and I went with the pineapple coconut rice. For my protein, I chose grilled chicken, but they also offer shrimp, salmon, and even a mushroom option for vegetarians and honestly, the mushrooms looked so good I almost switched. For my added sides, I kept it simple because I really wanted to taste everything. Collard greens and sweet potatoes. But they also had plantains, and okra....real deal soul food options. Then you get into the fresh toppings. Slaws, carrots, pickled veggies. I kept it light. I finished my bowl with collard green pesto (which intrigued me, and I'm glad I tried it) and added an étouffée sauce over my rice... and listen!!!!! That combo? Chef's kiss. I grabbed a tropical punch juice, and just like everything else, it tasted fresh and well-made. Let me say this clearly: the food is a 10/10. If you're someone who will give Chipotle chance after chance, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to try Spice Black. 10/10. Worth your money. Worth the hype. Worth the experience.
