Every time I come here it is the worst checkout experience I have ever had to deal with. I had 2 coupons to use and wanted to know what could and couldn't be used with my teacher discount plus seeing what the pricing of each item was before checking out as some were 30% off 60% off and 70% off. As I went to checkout an employee came over and asked if they could help me use the self checkout I explained I would rather wait for the employee who was at the standing register where they controlled the transaction as I know you cannot price check on the self checkouts and I was buying multiple glassware items and vases I needed wrapped. She said okay then when the employee at the register finished with her transaction she walked away from the register I explained why I wanted to use the register ran by the employee not self checkout and she didn't even let me finish but said I'd have to be helped by self checkout denying my request when I stood and watched her check out 2 other customers that way. As we were at the self checkout register and the prices were coming up I asked for things to be taken off as again there is no price check option she had to click several buttons and type in her employee and badge number each time making the process much longer, then started walking away when the transaction was complete I asked her to wrap my items and lo and behold all the wrapping equipment came from the register she was refusing to help me on. She then had to walk back and forth between where she took me to the self checkout and where the original register was with all the supplies I asked if she wanted to move back there to make it easier but she said no. While I was waiting for her to wrap my items 2 other customers who came to the line asked to be checked out by a person at a register rather than the self system and even though there were 3 employees standing at the self checkout registers they were both told no as well. This is the only craft store left now and I get extremely frustrated at each checkout. They have so many home decor items and things that need to be packaged when you leave it's not crazy to prefer to have an employee help you and give you those options. I had reached out to the store the last time I had a similar experience and was told that employee assisted checkout is always available upon request and that they were looking into it and making changes yet this was my first time back and it was the same if not worse. Highly disappointed in the lack of customer service and made to feel like a burden each time I try to checkout which is a shame as the selection and products are top tier. I love how the store is laid out and organized but I have walked away without buying things several times and even thought about it for this experience as well but decided to stick it through as the items were unfortunately needed in the space I am decorating. Hope they can finally do better at checkout to make me WANT to come back not just need to. read more

It has been some time since I've been in a Michael's. I used to love crafting but it has taken a backseat in priorities. I went because I had a specific need. I asked a clerk for assistance and she just said "look back here and if you can't find anything, look in the craft area," as she walked away. Hmmmm, I looked where she had pointed, couldn't find anything and then had to search for the craft aisles. I roamed around aimlessly for some time. It was not easy. I finally found the craft aisles but had questions and there weren't any clerks around. As I headed to the checkout, I looked up my account on the app. No clerks at the front but the self checkout was open. I checked out and left with no other human interaction. This review is for several reasons why I always had issues with this location. Yesterday I called in to ask if they had a plain wreath. The young girl who answered the phone had no clue and had to ask someone. I was placed on hold and can hear them talking. She went back on the phone and said the big wreaths they had were not plain and the only plain they had were small ones. We asked what the size was, etc. She claimed they had none and the only one they had were small. I didn't want to waste time, was the reason for calling but I drove to the store anyway, because how can they possibly not have any? I went in the store and the first thing I saw was a large pallet/box full of plain wreaths right there on the floor. How can they not see that or know? Good thing I went in. It's simple to just look around. The main issue with this place why I never came back after a few years, is because there was an old woman (Karen) that used to work here who was extremely RUDE. She was SO rude over the phone and in person, when I asked for her name, she flat out lied and gave me a random name. I went in to make a complaint to the manager and the manager said there wasn't anyone by that name. I described who the Karen was and complained about their rude customer service. They were apologetic and that it wouldn't happen again. Not sure if they ever confronted her about it. She was a grumpy old woman who hated her job, well over retirement age. She was mean and was very condescending over a simple question over the phone and she hung up on me. When I called back to ask for her name is when she lied. She had a smart remark and already bad attitude. Overall, just an incompetent workplace. People who don't know what they're doing, and folks who hate their job. read more

The staff at this Michaels truly needs to be retrained. They're nice people, but the incompetence is mind-numbing. When you order an item from Michaels online, it cannot be returned in store. No problem since the store offers to box it up and send your return back for you, right? Wrong. I send my return label to someone named Val and was told by the helpful lady in the store it's on its way. I check the label every week for movement and nothing. Call the store once a week and they insist it was sent out. Emailed Val, never heard a response. This store is just a massive headache. Chances are, they never returned my item and accidentally put it back on the floor. Or maybe they still have it in a box somewhere. My wife purchased a Christmas tree online and picked it up at the store. Unfortunately, the tree was defective as one section of lights did not work. We came to the original location of where we picked it up (Torrance Location) and were told by the manager Val that Christmas trees cannot be returned, that they are a final sale item. Today is December 4th and we purchased the tree on December 1st. I proceeded to tell him that the tree was defective and he said I needed to call the manufacturer to have them send me a new string of lights since we did not buy the extended warranty on the tree. Huh? How does this make sense? No where in the store does it state that Christmas trees are "all sales final" and when I showed him the return policy on line, he said "well, I won't be doing a refund for you tonight". The online policy states that all items are fully refundable within 60 days if not 100% satisfied with the purchase. I decided to drive down to the Redondo Beach store and they gladly took the return without any questions being asked. When I asked the cashier lady if they had a policy on returning Christmas trees she said that there is no such thing as an "all sales final" for trees. I am very disappointed in the way the Torrance manager Val handled this situation. His top priority as a manager should always be customer service and we received none of that tonight. I went into the store a second time to show him the online policy and he still refused to refund the tree. Michaels needs to do a better job of training their staff, specially their managers as they are who represent the company and unfortunately, the manager Val does a horrible job at representing this store. My mother and I've been loyal Michaels customers for years as full-time artists and hobbyists, unfortunately the customer experience at this store, specifically at the Vista Store in Torrance, has declined significantly. I hope my feedback warns other customers and helps management understand what's happening at the store level. A few days ago, I went in to quickly pick up an online order after receiving both email and text confirmation that it was ready. My name wasn't on any of the pickup bags, so I asked for assistance. A manager briefly looked around, said he would check by the registers, and then proceeded to count cash in the register instead of helping me. After I approached him again, he passed me off to another employee who also couldn't find the order. I eventually noticed a bag with my name on the floor behind the register. They scanned it, and I left. When I opened the package later that night, I realized not only was the bag dirty--with a footprint on it--but the product inside was the wrong brand. I had ordered a specific brand on sale, and they substituted an Artist Loft item without informing me. The receipt label didn't match the product at all. I returned to the store the next morning, where the female manager told me they had substituted their own brand because the original item wasn't in stock. That explanation made no sense--if a customer orders Prismacolor, you don't replace it with Artist Loft. When I questioned it, she impatiently said, "Well, I'm returning it for you," with no apology, empathy, or effort to acknowledge the mistake. Not only did I waste over 30 minutes during the initial pickup, but I also had to make a second trip to return their error. A simple, sincere "I'm sorry" would have gone a long way. While I was there, I asked about another pending order. They told me if the item was on the shelf, I can get it. Even though the item showed available at this store, we couldn't find any. I ended up canceling it. More waste of time! Later that afternoon (4:11 p.m., Dec. 3), I called the store because the website was now showing the item in stock. The person who answered the phone cut me off with, "No, I'm too busy," without any courtesy or suggestion to call back. The level of rudeness at this store has become consistent and noticeable, even my young child has commented on it. This pattern of dismissiveness, errors, and lack of customer care is extremely disappointing. I hope regional or district management takes these issues seriously and restores the professionalism and positive atmosphere Michaels was once known for. (I've never shopped at Hobby Lobby until recently, and the vibe there is completely the opposite. It's warm, friendly, and the price of same brand products WAY cheaper than Michaels!!!) A few additional concerns for fellow customers: Many art supplies are significantly cheaper at Hobby Lobby, Amazon, or Dick Blick online. I genuinely prefer supporting local stores, but not at the expense of higher prices and poor treatment. When returning online orders paid through PayPal, you can request a cash refund. Store employees stubbornly claim they can only issue store credit, but when I called to ask, customer service confirmed that is NOT true. I now have over $100 in store credits! And I'll tell you next why I wouldn't opt for Michaels store credits. At the Redondo Beach location, an employee scanned two store credit receipts--each worth over $80--and told me they had no balance. He even asked if I wanted to throw them away. I later confirmed this was his error, but when I brought it up during a future visit, the same staff member simply shrugged while leaning on the register with his leg up. He no longer works there, but the value of those credits was never recovered, and I never received so much as an apology. Another ongoing concern is price inconsistencies. As someone who shops at Michaels often, I know the prices and watch for coupons like most loyal customers. However, the prices on the shelves frequently do not match the prices at the self-serve kiosks. I've asked for assistance on this four or five separate occasions, and it's surprising that the issue remains unresolved. Even worse, staff often appear visibly irritated when the discrepancy is pointed out. Right before a recent 40% promotion, prices on many items were increased in the kiosks but not updated on the shelf displays. I picked up a few items, excited to finally use the long-awaited 40% discount. At the register, everything rang up at the higher price. When I asked about it, I was told that "the overnight crew forgot to change the tags," even though every version of the item was still marked at the regular price on the shelves. In the end, it would have been cheaper to buy the items at their regular price with the standard 25% coupon than during this so-called 40% sale. I wondered why I still shop there. The good: They had a great 50% off sale on planter pots and other items. Right now, they have a summer section with fun outdoor things like lanterns, flamingo pillows, dinnerware and decor. I came and found cheap wood paint for under $2. I love their baking section and all of the fun moulds you can use for gelatin or chocolates. If you don't use coupons or shop their sale section stuff can be pretty expensive but luckily there are always deals. The bad: I was looking for yellow pipe cleaner but they only had it in packs with other colors. Other colors were available as single color packets though. I was also looking for yellow fuzzy balls in a medium size but they only had small yellow fuzzy balls and large ones. They had medium ones in other sizes though. The interesting: They had really high-tech looking giant screened self-check out kiosks that take the online coupons. Do not forget to use your 20% off Michaels coupon! This place is ok. It's not the best but It's not the worst either. I used to do online ordering or better known as "Same Day Pick-up." In reality, when you do online ordering, it takes maybe 2-3 days from my 2 experiences (and that is if they have your item in stock - for me they didn't have it, even though the site said they did, but they offered another item that was better than the one I initially got but that may not always be the case for you). So if you want something, and if you really need to do the same day pick-up, you are better off just going to the store and looking for it. Speaking of going into the store. It has been crowded due to the holidays. From previous reviews, there is little to no customer service on the floor. In other words, if you are looking for something, you are on your own. I walked in on an afternoon looking for two balls of yarn that I needed to finish my Christmas present and so I ventured into an unorganized yarn section in hopes of finding my yarn in the middle of the shelves. I found one of them hidden in the drawers at the bottom of the shelves (assuming this is where they keep overstock - so major hint if you are the type of customer that goes "is there any in the back?"). The second one, I found it in a place hidden in plain sight but because of the lack of organization, I spent 20 minutes trying to find it. I am glad I kept looking because I almost gave up and left. Check out was pretty smooth, no issues there. So my overall advice is, if you go, don't expect any help and be prepared to spend a little time finding their item. I don't like giving 3 star reviews. I have also always been a fan of Michael's. So..... what went wrong?? The phone was ringing constantly the entire time I was there and NOBODY was answering. At first I thought maybe they were working short staffed... but NO.... there were about 6 employees at the front just literally ignoring the phone. There was also nobody in the store to assist shoppers. They were all in the front it seemed. When we checked out, I asked if they had an item that I hadn't been able to find. The cashier replied 'I don't know if we have that item. You can look against the back wall". The store needs new management or something. I shop at Michaels a minimum of 6 tines a month. I used to shop at the Redondo one, but the last few times the customer service has been spotty so I went back to the Torrance location and it was terrible. I went for the VIP event and the store was organized well and the food, dancers, and activities were 5 star, but unfortunately your staff ruined it. I was spoken to like I was a child by a staff member who told the whole line we were in the wrong place and we shouldn't be over there in a condescending tone. Sometimes it's not what you say, but how you sayit, in this instance it was both. I proceeded to go to a self check out lane and boom, another rude staff member. She was rushing me to check out and asking my number for rewards. I didn't need help, nor did I want it. She caused confusion as I wanted to use my coupon, and my voucher. I understand it was a tad busier than normal, but no one was complaining about a line or anything taking too long. I just don't get why you hire such rude people who lack customer service skills. Even if you don't feel like your creative bone is in there or is missing, it's in there somewhere and you just misplaced it as you got older. Our daughter has her baby shower coming up in a few weeks. I've been stopping in to various Michael's locations as we are out & about, keeping an eye out for decor items that are reasonable. Her palette is neutral florals, which means that past season clearance can work out. Dear Hubby and I popped in to this location on our way back into the city from Point Vicente. The store looked to be older, well-established, and not exactly cutting edge. I had started to fill a cart, then left it adjacent to the restroom for a few minutes. When I came out the cart was gone. Yikes! I had already half filled the cart, and really wanted several of the items. Fortunately, I caught up to the staff member who was busy putting back the things I'd selected. He apologized for being too efficient and went to pull the floral arrangements from the places he'd put them. Some of the aisles were tight on space. This isn't the most spacious Michael's you'll ever be in. Their pre-made floral designs on clearance were quite nice. Checkout was pretty quick. I have their rewards program membership, which saved me a few additional dollars off the sale prices. This location got the job done. read more

Got racially profiled today while at this store. I was checking out and bagging my items from the self check out, while putting them in a woman working there came up to me (passed by 3 other people checking out) to ask me if I have a receipt for the stuff I was bagging. She said it with such snark and attitude and when I said yes and asked her why she just talked under her breath and walked away. Also earlier when I was first scanning my items a female customer went up to her and asked a question, same woman said to the customer with loud attitude "I don't know about all that I just work here". I don't know if she was just having a bad day or what, but this whole visit was made awful because of her. read more

Went in the morning to pick up an order and was early and didn't know it since the doors were wide open and a bald employee said "UH UH WERE NOT OPEN YET READ THE HOURS MAAM" in an extremely rude voice. I don't mind waiting but to be spoken to in such a hostile way was definitely a turn off as I've been coming to this Michael's for years being that I'm a local and let me tell you... he was not the only rude one because there's also a mean condescending older lady who works there that speaks to you as if you're an idiot. Not only are they rude but they don't even do their jobs. There's nobody on the floor and when they make a mistake at the register it's your job to catch it (I wanted an exchange and the rude older lady just said I'll refund you and then do the exchange) and when she did the coupon came off and she said "oh well- sorry" and I said I'm sorry too. DO IT OVER AND TRY AGAIN. These people have no customer service skills and I hope they go out of business soon because it's a graveyard in there- hard to believe that with all the self check out stands that there's actually living people who work here but are out of sight doing everything but HELPING OUT CUSTOMERS. Avoid this disaster. So they took out all the check out counters, except one. They replaced them with self checkouts. Incredible waits and frustration awaits you now. When l asked they said that Walmart is doing this. Yeah, when Walmart is your inspiration, you are in for a miserable experience. Many stores have stopped self check out because of theft. I saw people trying to scan things and accidently stealing. Crafting is not like buying a can of beans, it is more complicated. Good people were stealing. They should watch their disappearing profits. From dissatisfaction and theft, it is obviously already a disaster. Crafting is part an experience of creating and being inspired. Self check out destroys that experience. Hope they filled out bankruptcy papers at that same time they installed all but one register as self check out. An example of corporate people who do not understand their product, nor their customers. I waited over 20 minutes. There was one person ahead of me, and l felt safe to call the Uber. This is a good place to get craft supplies. Much like Bed Bath and Beyond, this company, Michaels, tends to "over-coupon" where I think most frequent customers know there's some sort of 25% to 50% or a BOGO coupon that's in the Sunday Newspaper Ads, on the Internet or at the back or bottom of the receipt of your last purchase... so, almost nobody comes in and pays full price without having a coupon. To me, it's poor marketing since it's conditioning repeat customers with bad retail habits, only buying with coupons, which hurts profit margins. Aside from these offers, however, this store does have good prices and a nice selection, including seasonal merchandise year 'round for almost every occasion. Parking is easy here. read more

Supervisor on site however is very sarcastic. This is the second day in a row. I've done a pick up order and they don't have anything organized. There's no sign that says pick ups. There's no counter. There's no person working at the pick ups. There is a locker with your name and your order right next to the front door Yesterday my order wasn't there even though I got the text saying it was ready so I proceeded to do curbside check out as it was so hot and I had my dog in the car. Nobody came out to my car 15 minutes later I went inside and had to wait in line to let them know I'm still waiting for my order That when I got home, the paint I ordered was pretty much putty. So I placed a new order for new paint and come to pick up today. My order is there in the pick up station with my name. However, a lady from the cash register runs up grabs the tag out of there after I've already picked up the bag and demand my order number, I told her my last name and she said no with an attitude your order number. I just don't understand why I would need to give my order number when all the packages are sitting there waiting for anybody to grab them. Nobody's working there and if there was a line, I could just grab it and leave it. I don't understand what the process is when you don't have a counter or anybody working it it's just lockers with names and orders. Get it together people if there's a process have somebody working there or put it behind the counter. Used to like this store, now I'm not so sure. Ordered something on line for pickup, got text saying I could pick it up. Then got an email saying it was cancelled. Tried to call the store (8 times) to verify it was cancelled. Hit 3 for customer service rep. It would ring once and then hang up. I don't know if they have it set to automatically do that or someone was just doing it manually. Either way that's just messed up and annoying. Still gave them 3 stars because they do have a large variety of what I'm looking for, but I think I'll just start ordering on line from other places. read more

Had a bad experience this morning where I had to shop for one of my customers and two employees refused to help me because of the company I work for. I was given a batch to shop for my customer to find 19 items, employee Tiffany was not pleasant and refused to help me find these items. I tried to find them and got stuck. I asked another employee ( Sergio ) to help me but he was too busy scanning items. Found out he is an assistant manager who is not helpful at all. I never have good experience here. Only one person felt bad and decided to step in and help me find the rest of the 9 items that was left. Thank you George! Whoever runs this store needs to retrain their employees in customer service. This has been my third time within 4 weeks and the store has not changed. They replaced all the human cashiers with self-checkout. When you need a return or help with a gift card, you can tell they have a bit of an attitude because they had to help/work. Last I knew, I don't wear a Michaels badge.
