This Michaels is hella rude. I went here to get a frame for my new amazing Parks and Rec poster, and all the employees had serious tude. One girl rolled her eyes when I asked what aisle to go to. Another employee said that the frame size I was looking for isn't standard. Ended up finding several options on my own because it is a standard frame size. Line to check out was unnecessarily slow #inefficient. I love the prices and variety of Michaels, but this location needs to check themselves before they wreck themselves. read more

It's a good sized store, and has many offerings. However, if you don't anticipate a timely event, like XMas or Halloween, etc., they may run out of the desired items you want--only logical. But annoying as hell to me as I have a few days before this ghastly Halloween thing. And of course the time I decide to accept an invitation to dress up and party it up I'm caught in that situation, at least as far as this Michaels location is concerned. Nearly as annoying as that is the parking, which is waaay in the back of the building, and not very conducive to quick runs to and from the store. Superb job of custom framing by Christopher Speer in Michael's framing department. I brought in a fragile family print from the 1800s and he framed it with expertise, taste and sensitivity to my obsessive attachment to it. The entire experience was a pleasure. Highly recommended. read more

Everyone once in a while you have a customer service experience so awful you're thinking of it weeks later, and decide maybe a review is in order. This is one of those times. Bad experience at this store in November. One of the things I love about Michaels is the crazy sales, and I sometimes go to the store just to grab something I see advertised at a discount on the app. When I arrived to buy, I discovered that the price advertised on the Michaels app did not match price in the store. Despite one helpful employee on the floor telling me she would see what she could do and assist me in matching the price advertised, she was nowhere to be found after I waited in line and checked out. It's too bad I could not remember her name, otherwise things may have gone differently. When I checked out, the woman at the register not only refused to match the price on the app, stating she could not see the app herself and only had a paper ad, but was extremely rude to me in the process. She called the manager and passively said, "I have a customer complaining and a really long line." The manager came and acted annoyed, and was also extremely unhelpful. At this point I gave up on the items I was buying and vowed to never return to this store. I felt really disrespected. I love Michaels and used to love this location, but not anymore. read more

2 shots of inhaler and an antihistamine later... I brought the moldy spanish moss I'd bought back to the store. The woman at the empty checkout was particularly unhelpful. I offered her the bag and said "It's moldy." She asked for a receipt. I explained that I wasn't concerned about a refund but just wanted to let them know about it, she said "oh I'll just throw it away." I suggested she consider having someone for more moldy inventory and she said "Oh well, here's the label you can call the company." I said I was more concerned about what they had on their shelves and that she might want to ask her manager. I asked if they had something else to use and she said "i dunno", so I went back myself and got some shaved aspen instead. When I returned to the counter, she and the manager were laughing. I handed her the bag and asked if she could check it for mold before I bought it. She opened it and sniffed from a distance and then said "I really don't understand what the problem was in the first place..." Ugh. An apology (or at least acting like they gave a damn) would have been sufficient. Instead, I was treated condescendingly and dismissively. I've had great service at the Sunnyvale branch, but these guys are closer. After this incident, they've just lost my business. read more

I love crafting- and Michaels is the closest craft shop to me. Unfortunately, the staff are rude or run from you if you are looking for something. They also take forever at checkout- there will be a line of about five people waiting for checkout and only one register open. This review is solely of the frame shop and crafts classes. Last fall, I needed to get a custom frame for a lovely photograph with a bit of artistic nudity. I made an assumption that chain stores would have some kind of a corporate policy disallowing nudity and asked my photographer to recommend a family owned shop, and he did. Still, driving by Michaels, I decided to swing by and ask, rather than rely on assumptions. Mat, a young framing specialist, advised me that they do not have a policy concerning artistic nudity and that I was welcome to come bring my photo. I did, and Mat did a stunning picture out of my photo - the finished work is an epitome of understated grace. After that, I started ordering custom framing for my daughters' art work, as I was going through my archives. Several days ago I finished my project, picking up the last framed work by my younger daughter. I would give each framing specialist I worked with - Mat, David, and Jordan - five stars each. They worked with me patiently and creatively. A couple of times I didn't like the finished work and requested modifications, which were accepted with a smile and promptly applied. Once, the framers ran into a problem and made a modification themselves without asking me - sure enough, when I saw the finished product, I realized that their choice was excellent. Once, I brought a picture back because its dark raspberry frame clashed with my office decor, and ordered a blue frame instead. When I arrived for pick-up, I was given not just the picture, but the original frame, well protected by cardboard, in case I might use it in the future. I used both frequently ordered choices and unusual ones. One of the most unusual was a bright yellow mat with several cut-outs that enabled me to position two pictures side by side within one frame. That idea was suggested by one of the guys - again, Mat, Jordan, or David - and the finished work is well above spectacular. I never once had to produce a paper coupon or an email with a barcode - the guys would always apply all the best discounts for me. I also took two classes and was very satisfied with both. I plan to take more crafts classes. read more

I decided to have something custom framed. Was excited about the 70% off. Was surprised to see original price would be $240 (which seems nuts), dropped down to $75 which was more doable. It's not a huge piece of art, but it is an odd size. Paid $6 for it (-: I've had to call them twice to get a status (a gift I need to hand deliver this weekend.) The first time I called, the guy was nice, explained the frame was damaged and returned it, that there would be no problem having it done by Wednesday. Called today. First person coughed in the phone and hung up. Called a second time, they were very curt and seemed annoyed I was bothering them. They have not proactively reached out to me. I would rate this store as poor customer service. read more

If you come to Michael's for custom framing, try to work with David. I've worked with him a number of times, and am extremely pleased with the attention he pays to the work. It's very true that a frame can really enhance a piece of art. And conversely, it can also substantially detract from it, so it's important to get the right combination. David is willing to spend a lot of time with you, making sure you'll be happy with the finished product. A lot of the suggestions he makes for frames and mats are spot-on, and he'll spend lots of time tossing ideas out there and figuring out how things will look. He's suggested one or two combinations that I never would have considered, but came out beautifully. Prior to meeting David I did have a couple so-so experiences with the custom framing department here. But after I discovered Dave and his superb service, I've kept coming back. My pieces have always been done on time or earlier. The selection of frames and mats is huge. The regular prices for custom framing are high, but they have huge discounts very often. If you don't need something framed immediately, wait a couple weeks and there will probably be a big sale on custom framing. After the discount, I still wouldn't call the service cheap, but I've found it to be comparable or cheaper than other framing stores. read more

This store is by far a DISAPPOINTMENT. From the lack of parking space, to customer service, and product availability, I am not a fan of this particular location. Unfortunate because this store is conveniently located close to my work area. After reading all the other comments, there seems to be a common denominator and I couldn't agree more. The 1 star for this particular store goes for Customer Service. Now, being that I am a Manager and customer service is a number one priority of mine, I apologize in advance for my high expectations of customer service. However, I could not help but mention what I witnessed from Michaels Customer Service. This one particular employee just caught my attention. Her name was Jackie and I was witnessing/listening/observing her customer service skills as I was waiting in line. Standing there in the long line as there was only one cashier, I counted 3 other customers conflicts that she encountered with her customers. It was to the point where she physically demonstrated a sense of anger with her loud sobs of frustration. When it was my turn, there was no surprise that I also experienced a conflict with her. Now, that is a total of 4 customer conflicts. I can't imagine how many other conflicts she has on a daily basis. I'm sorry but customer service is not a job for everyone and it is certainly not a job for Jackie. On a positive note, I am a definite fan of Michaels and I have been for years and years. read more

Tonight was a night of extremes. I finally took the time to do the post-11 year old birthday party returns. First stop, Michaels in Mountain View. My daughter received a make your own clock gift from her friend. I tried to exchange the obviously mislabeled clock face (much thicker than the packaging stated), since the clock mechanism sold for this thickness wasn't long enough for the true size. The very rude and unconcerned manager of the store refused to do the exchange since the clock face was unwrapped. Clearly she wants to keep selling an incorrectly labeled product to Michael's customers. I informed her that I have been a long term customer, and would not return after such poor service, but she was completely unconcerned. Compare this to my next stop to Costco, where I went to return another gift (without a receipt). The clerk was extremely friendly, helpful and promptly refunded the money for the item without question. This incredibly courteous and efficient service is what makes me a loyal customer. The staff at Michaels could learn a lot by a trip to their neighboring warehouse store. read more

I have to go to this store because it's the only one convenient for me, but I hate going here every time. The selection of goods is ok - it's a small store so I can deal with that, but the people who work here make it so unpleasant. I've been here 5 times so far and each time I spend 10 minutes finding stuff and 30 minutes in the check out line. Someone who said they were the manager was super rude to all of us in line when we asked (very nicely) if he could open another cash register. When you have 10 people lined up and the one cashier is taking 20 minutes to process a return, you should open another cash register, don't you think? read more

Lately, I've been thinking of making candles and Michael's popped up in my mind. This location is about 5 minutes away from my work so I thought I'll drop by during my lunch break. Parking spaces in the front are tight and limited. However, they do have additional parking spaces in the back if you can't find a spot in the front. After walking around for a couple minutes and not being able to find what I'm looking for, I flagged down an employee to direct me to where I needed to be. When I finally found the candle making section, I realized there were limited selections of everything. They didn't even have wax, which is the main ingredient I needed. In that same section, there were no empty candle jars or a smaller version of candle wicks. I ended up walking around looking for glass jars. When I found some glass jars, they were too thin to use for candles. However, I did find a couple mason jars (without lids) but with a hanging wire. I bought 2. Even the soap making supplies were limited. I was so disappointed when I left. read more

Michael's is perpetually understaffed, but this location does have a decent selection, especially at Christmastime. Just get there early for the best stuff! They are down the street from my work. I've purchased from them a couple of times. Pros: ~ Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and tries to do what they can to service you ~ Everything is orderly and things are where you expect them. Cons: ~ Selection is smaller than other Michaels due to the size of the store ~ Parking is limited. ~ Lines can get long and staff do not do a good job of getting the wait time down. read more

The store is bright, clean and full of wonderful goodies. The parking is a terrible situation! If the few spots up front are taken, you have to park in the back of the store. After you park in the back, you have to walk back down the drive-way to get to the front of the store. You are walking in a narrow drive-way as cars are entering the parking area. You are about 4 feet from people driving to and from the parking lot. There is only one solution: I think they need to have a back door so that customers are not in danger of being run over while purchasing silk flowers! They do have a back door, but it isn't for customers to use, only for shipments to arrive. This was really poor planning on the part of Michaels. Mountain View waited SO LONG for this store to open, and now it has a major flaw. I'd rather drive to the Sunnyvale Michaels than try to park at this store. read more

These guys are really fantastic. I've dealt with them three times, and each time I walked away really impressed with the experience. I took in an large and odd-sized object to be framed, and was just so impressed with David in the framing department. He was so helpful and answered all my questions so professionally I remember thinking, "Wow, I would expect this kind of service in an upscale specialized store, not a chain store like Michaels." When I called in, everyone was so nice on the phone. It's easy to overlook this kind of thing, but I'm so used to being greeted with flat, emotionless voice that talks so fast that I can barely understand them, and then interrupts and transfers me before I can even finish a sentence. So when the associate who picked up the phone talked to me like a real person it actually caught my attention. And it's not like they were over-chatty like the my lonely aunt that won't let me off the phone. They were just personable and professional, and take it from someone who HATES the phone: that's rare. After I picked up the piece, I forgot to get the receipt and needed to call the store back. While they weren't able email me the receipt, the associate (I regret not catching his name) offered to text me a photo of it from his personal cell phone, which was all I needed. He helped me finish my expense report and saved me a trip to the store! While no aspect of these interactions are the sort of things that you can really shout from rooftops, people often underestimate the effects of the small things, and forget to thank merchants when they do things really well. But Michaels really nails the small things to create an outstanding customer service experience. read more

I really like this Michaels. And I chose going to it over the Redwood City store. My only complaint is the parking situation. And it looks like everyone here agrees with me. Now they have installed a door in the rear of the building, so if you park in the back you do not have to walk around to the front to gain entrance to the store. read more

Convenient location. I often have trouble locating what I need; but overall the service is good.

I'm not a very crafty person, let me state that upfront. This Michael's loses a star due to the often glacially-slow line for check-out. Otherwise, I am a fan of this place for two main reasons: 1. As a bargain-hunter, I can find great deals when items are on sale and clearance. I pretty much use coupons for full-price items, which makes it worth it. Particularly good finds include holiday/birthday gifts for kids, party favors, baskets, and self-contained artsy projects for kids under 8 for $5-$10. Occasionally I have had to return an item, and it has always been a smooth process, aside from the wait in line. 2. David in the custom framing department. He gave tremendous thought and care to a sentimental project I brought in, and this personal touch is something I normally do not expect from a big chain store. Quality, visual appearance, and price were all things I needed to consider with my framing, and because of a sale and David's eye and thoughtful suggestions, I have a beautiful piece that I could afford. read more

I prefer this Michael's to the Sunnyvale one, mainly because the layout makes more sense (the Sunnyvale one usually has a better clearance section). I can't tell you how much stuff I bought here for my wedding--if an item isn't on sale one week, it probably will be the next, and they do give out pretty generous coupons for regular priced items. While you're there, be sure to check out the Martha Stewart crafts section (love her labels and albums!). My only complaint is that the parking here unequivocally sucks--if you can't get one of the few spaces in the front, you have to park in the back and walk along the narrow driveways to the front door. The walking isn't a problem, but there's no sidewalk there and cars will often speed or drive the wrong way down the one-way lanes, so it seems pretty dangerous. read more

For one of my paintings, I didn't want to order a custom frame and was looking for alternatives, and so they suggested matting it and just super gluing the hook to the back of the posterboard. And Karin helped me find the frames I was looking for and gave me all the coupons for them! Specifically THIS Michaels has the BEST people for your framing needs. read more

The 'framing discount' scheme is just that. They tell you that a frame will cost around $500, and then apply their discount of 50%+25% to get it to roughly $200 with tax. When you go to other frame shops (as I did), their basic price is around $175 for the same thing. Hence, Michael's inflates their 'list price' on custom frame and then applies what you think is big discounts against it - realizing that they almost always have 50% discount coupons weekly. Truly is a misleading sham. read more

It's really difficult to find anything in this store and there are no sales persons there to help. The lines are always very long at checkout, so you need to be prepared to spend a lot of time there. Also, sometimes they run out inventory and it is impossible to get anyone to help to order them. read more

I had an awful experience in the framing department. Today I went in with my six year old. David who was working in the framing department was with another person. She had a lot of questions so I waited patiently. My six year old was bored and had a hard time waiting for our turn. She was trying to entertain herself by looking at things in the aisle around the framing department. The wait was long so we headed out to other areas in the store that had more kid items while I kept an eye on the framing department to see when he was done with the lady in front of me. I noticed that David was ringing up the woman's selection. I approached with my child who wanted to not be there. I had to call my child back and expected that David from the framing department to wait on me but no he went to the back room. I was surprised that he walked to the back when I was standing in front of him. I rang the bell to call for his assistance. He came out and commented that my child was very active. I told him I think its the waiting that she could not take. We started discussing the item that I wanted to get framed. I had questions for him and he tried answering them. During this time, I gave my phone to my child so that she could play with it and to keep her occupied as I discussed the framing options I wanted. Another woman approached while we were in discussion and waited behind me. She was impatient and said she came the day before and wanted to pick up her framed pictures. David said he would be right back and started to help her. He picked up her frame and showed the woman the picture he framed. They started to discuss her picture and how the frame she chose matched the picture so well. This woman was so proud of her work that another person working at the store walked by and she announced that she painted the painting. She proceeded to state she had another item to pick up and David proceeded to get that item to her as well. They started to discuss this painting too. At this point I was pretty upset that I waited patently for him to help me but when it was my turn he took his time and helped out someone who was behind me and started to discuss the other woman's paintings. I asked if he could print up the quote he gave me since I too had to go. He indicated I can take a picture of it but he could not print one up since he was busy helping out the woman who was behind me in line. I felt he discriminated against me since I had a child that could not wait. I tried really hard to keep her entertained but it seemed like David did not want to deal with me and my framing job because of my child. I waited for my turn but the fact that he walked to the back of the room when I was standing at the counter and that he helped the woman behind me when it was my turn and we were talking about my framed job that is unacceptable. David from the framing department just lost me as a customer. read more
