Michaels cinnamon bread-the best!
Kristen C.

This place is such a local gem! Is it authentic Italian food...no...but is it really good Italian-ish food? YES! This is the cinnamon butter bread. It's one of the best things I've ever had...you can't stop once you start. We also ordered (as we always do) the family special with spaghetti, gondola type sandwich, garlic bread and soda ..you can't beat it for price and the food you get! Staff always nice, store clean and food ready fast. Lasagna is also delicious!

italian sausage "sandwich"
Adam H.

I hate to be blunt, but the italian sausage "sandwich" is just about the worst "sandwich" ive ever had. the sausage was a bland, rectangular patty. the sauce was weak the cheese wasn't bad, yet there was enough cheese on this one sandwich to feed a family of five and it weighed down the bread and added so much thickness that it could not be folded and enjoyed as a sandwich should be. how do restaurants survive with putting out food like this?

I can't believe there is a charge to cut the sandwich!

I really like Michael"s. They are essily the highest priced for the similar options they provide. However, I enjoy the product more. How desparate does a business need to be to charge for cutting a sandwich. For those unfamiliar, a Mike's sub is served on very soft bread and is a foot long, more or less. I get it cut into 4ths so i can enjoy while driving. It is lunacy that, in order to do so, I am asked to pay around a 3 percent charge for cutting the sandwich. I didn't get extra and it was wrapped as one sandwich. While i will pay a buck or so more for the same thing here as the inventor of the sandwich charges, I am done over a $.30 cutting fee. Yelpers .... please watch for and report idiotic fees. I am grateful restaurants are stll around, but I will avoid them all for fees.

Great food made to order. Usually order the foot long Michael sub or the Italian beef. Both great.

I'm not sure if there's history with Michael's and La Gondola, but it's very similar, so if you like one, you'll enjoy the other.

Palanza's Family Dining - Baked tortellini

Review Visit: December 29th, 2015…read more Palanza's was Plainza's. Palanza's seems to be well-regarded among people I know from the Washington area. With that in mind, I went with a group of friends to try it out one evening. We came. We ate. We left reeking of grease. That just about sums up my experience there. We showed up for dinner and tried a variety of things. We all ordered something different and shared some appetizers. What we all picked off the menu was lost to time. But I do remember chomping down my food and having to tell my mouth that there was indeed some food being consumed since there wasn't much flavor in my sandwich. I can't speak for my friends and I know asking them about their experience today would lead to a lot of "I don't remember"s. So, I am going to chalk it up to maybe having an off day there, either on my behalf or the chefs behalf. Either way, I won't forget the stench of my coat after we left. As soon as we got in my car to leave (it was just Tim and I in my car), I could instantly smell the reek of grease on my coat. It was fairly strong and made me gag a bit as I was taking Tim home. Once I got home, I instantly put my coat in the hamper for immediate cleaning. It's amazing that I don't remember what sandwich I ordered but the heavy grease smell on my coat is a memory that is clear as day. Second chances are something I believe in. I am willing to give Palanza's another go should the opportunity arise.

Great hole in the wall type place. We got an appetizer of the Mozzarella Sticks and wow they were…read moreso good, super stringy cheese I almost choked. Got a salad to start and I was kind of disappointed, lettuce wasn't super fresh and it was very watery. For the main dish I got the baked tortellini, very good although I thought there could have been a little bit more sauce. Service was top notch! Will come back as our family loves coming here.

Michael's Italian Feast - Meatball Sandwich

Review Visit: September 17th, 2014…read more In Central Illinois, there is a fierce battle between local Italian places. La Gondola. Avanti's. Michael's Italian Feast. Not only the trifecta of Italian places but also a battle of personal preference. My family and friends grew up on Avanti's. Others grew up on La Gondola while the rest had Michaels. It seems like once you pick one, you stick to it for life. Bucking that trend, I tried them all and loved them all. Michael's has a smaller but very similar menu to the other places. They offer their version of an Italian sub simply called Mike's Sub. I actually had one today since I was in the area and it was just as good as I remembered. It was served warmed and that amplifies the taste a ton. Avanti's has a restaurant you can sit in while La Gondola and Michael's have areas where you order at a counter and they bring the food to you. While this doesn't impact my review in any way, it is something to keep in mind if you visit. After my initial visit, we popped over to FrozenSpoon for some ice cream. While Michael's has a few locations throughout the Central Illinois area, this one is special in having a local ice cream place as neighbors. Ice cream or not, you can't go wrong with any of the Michael's locations.

Love Fridays and the live music. The main room also has an ice cream counter tucked in the corner…read more The pizza is the best Italian style!! Staff is friendly, and accommodating.
