It's been a while since we ate at Sugar wood fired Bistro, and clearly, we've been gone too long! We had some friends visiting from out of town, so we brought them here to try the this restaurantfor the first time! I've missed their barbecue chicken pizza, I had forgotten how light and delicious the pizza was, the crest was cooked to perfection! We got to try some of their appetizers for the first time, we had the potatoes and the cheesy bread, they were great! The potatoes had a nice crispy outside while still tender and super flavorful on the inside! We also got to try some desserts with a group we were with. We tried the blueberry lemon cake, chocolate cake, and carrot cake. It was nice to be able to taste all three desserts! They really enjoyed the pizza, and so did we, so happy we went back to visit! The place did not have a bad vibe, just not a great vibe. The ownership has three different restaurants in Peoria, the other two, I liked, this one, not so much. I ordered the grilled salmon, I am a huge salmon fan. It was not tasteless, just nothing made it pop. The rice it was served with had little flavor, the grilled zucchini and squash needed a bit more time on the grill. Disappointing was ordering the food at a counter as you walk in, getting your beverages from a Pepsi fountain drink machine and not getting a proper greeting. Disappointing most was the service when the food was placed on my table, not a word said and at no time did anyone come to check on my satisfaction of the meal. Review Visit: October 20th, 2014 Sugar. Spice. Everything pizza. Nestled in the seemingly ever-developing downtown area of Peoria is Sugar. Sugar is a place you can go to get some upscale pizza for yourself. Or a group of friends. Matt, Ashton and I did just that. We rolled up on an afternoon where Ashton was free to sneak away for her work lunch. The parking situation isn't ideal in this area of Peoria. It's all side-of-street that last time I checked. I do believe there is some parking on the side of Sugar but not much. So, if you come during a lunch rush, expect to struggle looking for a parking spot. Once we were parked, we headed in. Everything about Sugar is upscale and nice. Not quite fancy level but one where you know you are going to get good service and good food. We were lucky enough to get a seat right away since this was the lunch rush. Once seated, we got to looking over the menu. Since it's been awhile, I don't recall what I ordered but I was confused on what Sugar offered exactly. The name conjures up images of a candy store. I knew it wasn't that because of the full name is Sugar Wood-Fired Bistro. I knew it had pizzas or something similar. As I looked over the menu, I wasn't sure if these pizzas were for individual consumption or for sharing. In the years since the visit here, I have learned a lot more about restaurants and their offerings. I was so innocent in these days. Orders placed, we waited and watched the place replace an empty table as quick as it could. Small talk was shared among us while we waited for our food. I don't think we waited a terribly long time for our food to come out. But once it did, I was drooling at the personal pizzas placed in front of us. Yep, you order your own personal pizza here. No arguing over what toppings need to be requested. No debating over if pineapple goes on pizza. No awkwardness as you try to figure out who gets to keep the last few slices. You get the pizza you want. And what a pizza it is. Each bite was super good and you could taste the quality of ingredients in each bite. At about $12+ per pizza, you don't feel like they skimped on the goods. I can't tell from the photo posted below but I think I got the buffalo chicken pizza. It might not look that appealing but it looked great in person. Each bite was full of flavor while not having any one ingredient overpower any other. It wasn't long before we all put down our pizzas and were out the door. Mostly due to Ashton being on a time limit. The food was indeed fantastic but I do have to admit that while it was good, I didn't get entirely too full. I left with that twinge of hunger still in the back of my stomach. If we would've gotten appetizers, I am sure that that twinge of hunger would've been gone. So, if you do come here, do remember that parking can be a bit of a hassle and if you have a large enough group, share some appetizers to top off your meal. read more

Small pizzas and slightly awkward without bigger sizes for better value, an unexpected trip over our trip in to find a helpful staff, easy going darkened space for all groups, plenty of menu items like paninis and pies, and thought out brew list. Nothing I sampled really spoke to me but the apricot Wheat from Industry was nice. The others enjoyed a cider from San Francisco. Another did his own BLT Panini, what a feast! Was jealous, he nibbled it all down just as our soppressata and smoky pork chipotle pizzas showed up, we got the chance to turn tables! Again wished for larger sizes, we had hoped there would be leftovers for a fourth meal. But with these flavors, rich base, fantastic meats, oh that hot honey! There was nothing left but to pay and get the guys a bit squeamish to owe me seventeen dollars just unsplitting two pizzas and a cider. As someone with allergies to dairy- cheese- butter- eggs, you'll find an extremely difficult time finding something to eat. Very disappointed as they cook everything in butter and can't make special accommodations. The plain lettuce salad was fresh and I had a bare pizza dough with sausage and pepperoni. It was well prepared. The restaurant was very very hot inside and nothing worse than eating in a restaurant with an 80 degree temperature. The girl behind the register was very pleasant and really wanted to help me but the chef was not going to make any special accommodation for my food issue. I ordered the pepperoni pizza and side of potatoes. The order was delivered quickly and was complete. Potatoes: cold cheese on top of round balls of what I suspect was mashed potato. The flavor was very bland and the texture was off putting. The pizza was nice to look at however I couldn't eat more than half due to the amount of salt which overwhelmed the flavor. My wife and I were in Peoria for a collegiate Cross Country meet and were looking for something different for dinner. We've been to Peoria on a number of occasions, so we have the lay of the land. The first place we picked was no longer in business. The close second was Sugar Wood Fired Bistro. This is near the ballpark in the downtown area. We entered the restaurant and were immediately greeted. They do things a little differently than normal. You pick up a menu at the door and find a table or, if you know what you want, you can order at the counter. What we did not know was this was more of a pizza place. They have a wood fired pizza oven directly behind the counter. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese with an appetizer of Jalapeno Poppers. My wife ordered the Salmon BLT with a salad. The building appears quite old and is made of brick. They have outside seating on the sidewalk that seemed quite nice. The interior of the restaurant is brick and "old wood". It gives a rustic industrial look and is a neat atmosphere. They gave a glasses and we got our own fountain drinks. When we got there, there were only a few customers. Shortly after getting our drinks, the small restaurant filled up quickly. Our appetizer arrived and it looked good. Fresh halved jalapenos filled with cilantro cream cheese and topped with bacon pieces before being heated in the wood fired oven. They were served with fresh pico de gallo. Our entrees arrived and they looked good. My wife's Salmon BLT was a large sandwich and she said it tasted good. The salad looked fresh and she liked the dressing. The Buffalo Mac and Cheese was a good portion and had the right amount of buffalo sauce that added good flavor without being over bearing. the only draw back was the chicken. Thicken was not the star of the show. It lacked and real flavor. I wish the chicken had been fried to give it better texture. Overall, it was a decent meal and was a nice experience. This would be a good date night spot for sure and next time I would try a pizza. Also, Maybe the cleanest restroom I have every been in for a public setting. The restroom was stocked, clean and smelled fresh. The staff was exceptional! Super friendly and seemed to provide great service to all of the customers while we were there! read more

My wife and I came to this restaurant yesterday for a date, the inside was very cozy and incredibly aesthetic. Perfect for a date, one would think... We were one of the only people in the restaurant, one out of two tables. We ordered and I went up to place in our orders. An appetizer and a pizza. But, once the crowd swept in a while after we had to wait almost 40 minutes for our food. The food that was served to us was very good, very fresh-- too bad they gave us the wrong order. In all, unless you want to wait almost an hour for your food because the waiting staff has no clue what's even going on around them or want someone else's order AND if you want to see mindless staff scwabbling around like lost penguins... This place SHOCKED me. My coworkers chose Sugar for dinner one night and I was skeptical since I'm not a specialty pizza kind of person. After one bite of the Jalapeño Popper pizza I was a fan. The flavors were just right and it wasn't overly spicy. I was a big fan of the fresh jalapeños. It was a little burnt on some parts of the crust but that's just how a wood fired pizza is going to come out. I can't remember the beers they had on tap but they were also good. The ordering process was super easy as you order at the front register right when you walk in. The ladies working were very friendly and were the ones that recommended the beer I ended up liking. The place is a short walk from the Peoria Chiefs baseball park so it would be a good spot before or after a game. The outdoor seating is an added bonus and has an excellent ambiance overall. Sugar, I am a big fan and have loved every dish that I have ordered and I have been a frequent patron as I work in the downtown area. With that said, lately my carry out orders have not been right and it is not until I get back to the office that this is realized. Last time I was missing the dressing for my Salmon salad so this time I was sure to double check that the dressing was present with the order; however, this time I find that there aren't any dried cherries in my salad as there should be. I should not have to check that my salad has all the toppings that it should. Additionally, the containers of food were placed in the bag on their side which I discovered when I was checking for the dressing. I fixed it, but not before my coworkers pesto chicken had leaked all over the bottom of the bag. Again, food is really good overall, but they have some work to do from a quality control perspective. Perhaps it is related to the staffing issues that many dining establishments are dealing with at the moment, but when I am paying $13 for a salad I would appreciate getting all the toppings shown on the menu. So this is one of the few places in the area to get a to-go salad that has actual substance! I was in town for work and i needed something for dinner and then lunch the next day. Over the phone I ordered two entree salads: - Roasted salmon salad - they were out of salmon so had to pivot - Waldorf salad (add chicken) - roasted vegetable salad (add chicken) Then when I hung up I panicked and realized the apples in the Waldorf salad won't hold up overnight so I called back and changed the Waldorf to another roasted vegetable. So when I went to pick it up they ended up making the Waldorf so I was like whatever. They gave me 1 container for dressing and I don't know which salad it was for but assumed it was the Waldorf since the roasted veg had a balsamic glaze. Ok so the roasted vegetable was good at first but it was way too much romaine. Like half the container was dry undressed romaine. In hindsight I think the dressing was meant for this salad. The Waldorf salad I ate for lunch the next day and it held up! I ate most of it but it's huge. Chicken was dry on both salads. It took me a long time to return to Sugar after I visited them when they first opened. I had a pizza which I dearly loved, but never returned because it is not the kind of place I would go by myself(due to location). I was very excited when my dinner companions said we would go there for dinner before the play. We entered and ordered immediately. My friends ordered a pepperoni pizza and a margarita pizza. I opted for a pizza with red peppers. Others in the party ordered pizzas and wraps, but I didn't really hear their opinions. My friend who ordered the pepperoni pizza did not care for the pepperoni taste and felt the pizza wasn't cooked through. The person who ordered the margarita pizza had no negative or positive comments that I heard. Everyone at the table received their meals fairly quickly considering how busy they were, but my pizza took the longest (maybe 5 minutes or less). Instead of a pizza with red peppers, I received pizza with green peppers. I was bummed and one of my dinner companions said that's not what I had ordered. The delivery person said she knew and that they were going to make another pizza. I told her not to because I didn't want to hold my other companions back waiting for me to eat. The pizza was hot and the outer crust was crisp, but the bottom/middle seemed somewhat uncooked. Albeit there was a lot of cheese, it tasted a little different near the bottom. I ate what I could but honestly was not thrilled with the pizza. Another note of concern was the lighting in the women's bathroom. I hope it was just a matter of a light going bad, but it was extremely dim, so dim I couldn't tell if I had locked the door or not. I decided to wait until I got to the theater where lighting was not an issue. Lastly, it was too hot in the building which is something everyone in the group complained about.
