I came in to browse as usual. I like walking from the beads section to the acrylic paint section, polymer clay, and kit section, then over to the canvas to check prices, and to the holiday section. It's just a nice quiet place to browse art supplies. I came in knowing I wanted to pickup yarn for my "Crochet Kirby Project". I ended up picking the brand Loop and Thread. It had the colors I needed. I really couldn't find velvet plush texture yarn, so Loop and Thread would do. I was just excited to get materials to finally start crocheting. I did buy crochet hooks the last time I was in Michael's, so I walked toward the line for cashier. I don't trust store wifi to work WHEN I need it to. SO, before I walked into the store, I grabbed a coupon from the Michael's app and screenshotted it. There's a 40% coupon code for regular items, so always check the Michael's app before going to the cashier. I walked out of Michael's with yarn I was happy with.

I have been shopping at this Michael's since even before they moved to the current location, a very long time ago! They helped my grown children with their elementary school projects. I shopped for yarns for an elderly neighbor. I bought lots of craft stuff because in my head it all seemed so simple... Sure I used to finish projects & crafts. Not so much anymore. This store sure has some nice stuff in it though. Pretty baskets the silk flowers are beautiful. Do you like to build models with your kids? They have that too. Jewelry making? The beads & baubles are waiting for you. Is scrapbooking your thing? Its all there waiting for you. They carry holiday & wedding supplies and decorations too! Art supplies & paints for the big kids and little ones too. Games and sewing supplies and some very nice upscale photo albums & frames. Wrapping paper and knickknacks... Coupons can be found in the newspaper or you can join the frequent flyer program and they will email them to you...

Latest additions from beads I bought Sunday!

I am a beader and I always find something good here. I have only ever been once where there was a particular bead I was looking for they did not have The 12 mm cracked quartz. The staff is pleasant, patient and allow me to zone out and be in that bead aisle for hours if I like (while I mentally make bracelets and look for all of the elements). I got 70% off on beads this week and an additional 20% off of the entire purchase. Just WOW. The canvas sales make you want to paint. Lol. So I have been painting as well. Great starter acrylic sets that go in sale frequently. Creating is a necessity and this store has what it takes to satisfy the urge to make something beautiful! The manager's name eludes me but her being awesome sticks.

    70-inch custom frame & mount

Great team in the framing department! I had two very large custom frames done during a big sale and right before Christmas. Despite it being very busy and all the stress from Covid the employees were upbeat, personable, and kept it together. There was a mistake with one of my orders but Christina reached out to me and notified me of the problem and offered a generous remedy before I even came in. It was both very honest and saved me from the disappointment of coming in and being surprised with the problem. I'm not sure that the quality of the frames would have been worth the full non-sale price, but I suppose a 70-inch frame isn't going to be inexpensive anywhere!

Found parking conveniently right in front in the street since it was a quiet day out. I was looking for wool roving which she didn't have, however, she was so kind to explain the difference between the types of material and she showed me the correct type of yarn she did have that I'd be able to pull apart with my carding brushes! She had a lot of equipment to use for yarn crafts and it was great to see the variety of product inside. Apparently she holds craft nights and such too which I'm planning on looking into. Prices here were sooo much better than all the places I've found online which is also have to pay extra for shipping. She also even rolled the yarn into a ball for me before we left. Hopefully they'll have wool roving here soon, but I'm thankful for the yarn we were able to purchase for my current projects :) The best part -- her dog Jasper kept us company throughout our whole experience there and he is the absolute cutest cuddle bug! Can't wait to come back.

When we stepped inside, we were greeted by a warm and bustling scene. A knitting workshop was in full swing with about 15 women attentively listening to a presentation. It felt like a true hub for knitters. The store was neatly organized, with shelves full of beautiful yarn in all colors and textures. Alongside the yarn were various hand-knitted items available for sale. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and for a Sunday afternoon, the store was packed which, judging by the atmosphere, is probably the norm for them. My aunt approached the front desk and spoke with a staff member about her sweater. The woman was kind, informative, and wrote down helpful details about when their repair expert would be in. She even provided a business card for follow-up. Although we didn't make any purchases this time, I was impressed by how well-stocked and inviting the store was. As someone who doesn't knit, I could still see how this would be a dream spot for any knitting enthusiast offering not just supplies, but community and expertise. 5 out of 5 - for the welcoming vibe, knowledgeable staff, and well-organized space. If I ever take up knitting, this is where I'd go.

I used to knit a lot, but lost interest a couple years ago, and recently decided to try and get back in to it. When I arrived at Fillory I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed help with anything. I asked for a simple pattern to help ease me back into knitting. The staff member (maybe the owner?) guided me to a table covered in free patterns they were giving away for LYS day and said I should pick one and then they would help me find the right yarn for the pattern. I picked what I hope is an easy shawl pattern and then another staff member led me to the appropriate yarn section. There were so many choices of beautiful yarn I had a hard time deciding. I finally settled on a skein of Malabrigo in variegated shades of blue. I didn't see the needles I needed for the project, but it turned out they had them behind the counter. It was so convenient to be able to buy everything I needed at once. To top it off, they offered to wind my skein right then and there. Usually yarn shops don't offer this service on special days like today when the shop is crowded with customers. Fillory has been around for many years through several owners. They have a large selection of yarn and helpful employees who work hard. There is also a dedicated space for social knitting if you want to drop by to knit with others. After my trek, Fillory Yarn was like an oasis. I immediately felt welcomed by the coziness of the store (it's very welcoming and inclusive), as well as the very friendly and helpful employees. Multiple said hi and welcomed me in, asking if they could do anything for me or if I needed any assistance. I've only recently begun to get into knitting and I loved their social knitting table! More stores should have that. I live in SF and I suppose SJ stores have more space for that. There were multiple people sitting and knitting and chatting. I also appreciated their sale section! I didn't buy anything from that section, but considered it. I also got a 5% off discount off my first purchase for joining their loyalty program. Everyone was so very helpful and friendly, quite a few employees and they all asked if I needed help. I loved their examples of items that were made with yarns they sold. They have an extensive collection and variety across types of yarn, materials, yarns for different items, books, accessories, and items across different price points--there is something for everyone and anyone, which makes sense. Fiber arts are political and I've been very impressed at how stores and fiber arts communities are welcoming everyone of all backgrounds into the fold. I'm disappointed but not surprised that some Yelp reviews reflect people who don't appreciate that inclusivity.

Housed in a small Sunnyvale warehouse, the organization says that each year, they keep about 70 tons (!) of material from going to the landfill. FabMo hosts regular sales open to the public as well as biannual "free giveaway" events. Customers can find tile, carpet, textile fabrics, wallpaper and more. Many materials are provided for free to teachers and there are also donations from the local community. Quilting fabrics, silk fabrics, jewelry making items, sewing notions, leather, decorations and much, much more are offered for sale in person or online through the FabMo eBay store. The only thing I wish that FabMo would do is to develop a partnership with WomenSV - a non-profit group based in the neighboring town of Los Altos. WomenSV helps women get out of abusive relationships. A little known fact about California family law is that, while the legal process is ongoing, individuals are prohibited from selling or using community property to make money. This allows for a continuation of financial abuse by the more powerful partner as they can delay the legal process indefinitely. In my own case, the divorce has been going on for three years as my ex has blocked me from accessing funds that are legally mine. Thanks to the low and no-cost materials I got from FabMo, I have been able to make and sell small craft items in order to buy groceries and obtain veterinary care for my service dog. As FabMo already hosts regular crafting lessons, I wonder if FabMo could somehow do community outreach to provide materials and teach skills to women trying to leave their abusers. Even people who have already managed to escape could benefit from the amazing work that the FabMo volunteers do. They're so successful at saving materials - - wouldn't it be great they could be a part of saving lives. Thanks, FabMo!
