Looks like a good one...

This is a pretty good location. The strip mall has a Ross, Marshall's a DSW and a Half Price Bookstore. With all those and a Burger King parking can get rough at times. Michael's is a good craft, party and art supply store. That carries some wedding decorations as well as some home decor, pillows silk plants & flowers. If you can build it they will come and buy it... Need yarn or sewing supplies? They have it all. Scrapbooking or card making your thing? How about beads or jewelry making? It's all there... I didn't find exactly what I was looking for on my last visit, but... I improvised and got something close and it worked! That's always a good thing! I also grabbed some canvases & paints for my daughter while I was there.

The store was well-stocked and reasonably full with shoppers, all masked and maintaining social distance.

Our go-to store when we need something artistic for a birthday or holiday occasion. My daughter and I visited this afternoon as we needed to buy a few gifts - for the first time since the pandemic began 8 months ago in March. The store was well-stocked and reasonably full with shoppers, all masked and maintaining social distance. We headed to the arts section and found a couple of the things we wanted right away, but needed help locating the third. There was a store manager handy and she pointed us in the right direction. Shopping done, we browsed a little in the aisles packed with Christmas ornaments - one of my favorite purchases during the festive season. Then we got in the longish check-out line, which moved surprisingly quickly because there were four open checkout counters. Overall - a very smooth experience. Will certainly be back this holiday season for more shopping. Pro Tip - sign up for their on-line coupons. You can score some good deals - we got 30% off one of our items today.

Doggie shopping at the art store!

Jim the manager was awesome! I purchased some items earlier and forgot to ask for a gift receipt. He kindly helped me get one and saved the day! And Max had a great trip!

Bad service. The cashier's attitude was strange and unfriendly. I'll try Staples, Walmart, or other places for my business.

Now after all these years and now being retired and having the time, I'm ready to expand my skills. Now let me preface the fact I'm a lefty, so this is probably why I never went further that a simple stitch/blanket. But now you can find videos and tutorials, yay! So... off to the yarn shop. I mean Michael's has yarn for basic projects, but if feel it's time to step it up! During the pandemic I visited this shop with my friend who was looking for quality yarn at the time. Today I felt I'd go back and check out what they could offer for a burgeoning beginner/intermediate like me. The owner Marsha greeted me when I came in and was so helpful with all my questions (and I had a lot of questions!) she was very patient and kind. She helped me find a nice cotton yarn that wasn't too expensive since it's my first time doing a project like this one, and gave me some good tips on working with this kind of yarn. So also told me I can always come and sit at the large table with a project and sit and work on a project if I want too and time. So yes, this yarn may be a bit more expensive that you are used too if it's your first time at a proper Yarn shop, but these yarns are lovely and the qualities are beautiful. It's really a lovely little shop.

In the center of the shop, a group of women were knitting and chatting around the table, and it was absolutely charming. Marsha, the owner, could not have been kinder. This is the kind of place that makes you want to linger, create, and connect. I can't wait to come back!

I used to knit a lot, but lost interest a couple years ago, and recently decided to try and get back in to it. When I arrived at Fillory I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed help with anything. I asked for a simple pattern to help ease me back into knitting. The staff member (maybe the owner?) guided me to a table covered in free patterns they were giving away for LYS day and said I should pick one and then they would help me find the right yarn for the pattern. I picked what I hope is an easy shawl pattern and then another staff member led me to the appropriate yarn section. There were so many choices of beautiful yarn I had a hard time deciding. I finally settled on a skein of Malabrigo in variegated shades of blue. I didn't see the needles I needed for the project, but it turned out they had them behind the counter. It was so convenient to be able to buy everything I needed at once. To top it off, they offered to wind my skein right then and there. Usually yarn shops don't offer this service on special days like today when the shop is crowded with customers. Fillory has been around for many years through several owners. They have a large selection of yarn and helpful employees who work hard. There is also a dedicated space for social knitting if you want to drop by to knit with others. They offer a variety of classes, too.

After my trek, Fillory Yarn was like an oasis. I immediately felt welcomed by the coziness of the store (it's very welcoming and inclusive), as well as the very friendly and helpful employees. Multiple said hi and welcomed me in, asking if they could do anything for me or if I needed any assistance. I've only recently begun to get into knitting and I loved their social knitting table! More stores should have that. I live in SF and I suppose SJ stores have more space for that. There were multiple people sitting and knitting and chatting. I also appreciated their sale section! I didn't buy anything from that section, but considered it. I also got a 5% off discount off my first purchase for joining their loyalty program. Everyone was so very helpful and friendly, quite a few employees and they all asked if I needed help. I loved their examples of items that were made with yarns they sold. They have an extensive collection and variety across types of yarn, materials, yarns for different items, books, accessories, and items across different price points--there is something for everyone and anyone, which makes sense. Fiber arts are political and I've been very impressed at how stores and fiber arts communities are welcoming everyone of all backgrounds into the fold. I'm disappointed but not surprised that some Yelp reviews reflect people who don't appreciate that inclusivity.

I was looking for wool roving which she didn't have, however, she was so kind to explain the difference between the types of material and she showed me the correct type of yarn she did have that I'd be able to pull apart with my carding brushes! She had a lot of equipment to use for yarn crafts and it was great to see the variety of product inside. Apparently she holds craft nights and such too which I'm planning on looking into. Prices here were sooo much better than all the places I've found online which is also have to pay extra for shipping. She also even rolled the yarn into a ball for me before we left. Hopefully they'll have wool roving here soon, but I'm thankful for the yarn we were able to purchase for my current projects :) The best part -- her dog Jasper kept us company throughout our whole experience there and he is the absolute cutest cuddle bug! Can't wait to come back.

When I got home and looked up the yarns they were knitted with I realized I had paid (significantly) less than the cost of the yarns they were made with. The value was truly insane. For example I got an adorable hand-knit cashmere blend hat for $12.50 and the yarn itself would have cost $20 a ball. I don't believe the sample sales happen often, but it's worth stopping in even if they just have their normal selection. Love you Yarn Shop Santa Cruz!

Alongside the yarn were various hand-knitted items available for sale.
