Always a very long line. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Michaels. I come here all the time for the cute knick knacks, cheap craft supplies, and great coupons.. But this isn't about Michaels and what the company itself sells; this is about their poor customer service. It's so frustrating how almost every time I come here the line is always towards the back of the store. If you come here, expect that you will have to wait in an incredibly long line that the staff is unapologetic for. There's always only 2-3 cashiers... understaffed maybe? One time when I came in with my mom and sister, a woman named Milagros helped us out at the register. We were disappointed when we found out she was ill-mannered and very unhelpful. I work in customer service so believe me I get it but Jesus does this establishment have a serious case of attitude problems. Specifically to the miserable MIDDLE AGED creatures in the frame department (cheetah hair dude and some middle aged dirty lady). After waiting 15 minutes standing next to these two, not a single word was exchanged, so after hiking the store 4 times around I finally caught someone and politely asked where I could pick up this painting, she told me to go exactly where she saw me standing 15 minutes ago. I told her nobody wanted to even acknowledge Me. She then told me there's no one to help me and somebody's on his lunch so I guess you'll have to wait like everybody else with an ugly smile after. THANKFULLY, this one really nice teenage girl helped me grab the painting I already paid for which took less than a minute . But, found out they carry a lot of useful props and getups for themed events and parties (definitely useful during Halloween!). Another low-priced option for those occasions. I'm not into arts and crafts but have a couple of relatives that are and I came in here with my cousin he was looking for a gift and it turned out that the gift was for me,LOL that he wanted a frame, so yes I picked out my own frame which I didn't know until afterwards, and he bought me a really cool wolf 3D picture for my Birthday. They have lot cool stuff for everyone and a room for the kids it's like a camp but for Art and crafts.. I have made it a point to go 30 years without ever stepping foot into a Michael's store. Just never felt like it was a store for a guy to be in. Now I wonder why I've never been there before. oddly enough it only took the married life for me to consistently make trips here. I guess married life has brought out the creative side in me. But I have found that it's everything that I've heard it to be from friends who shop there regularly. I personally have awesome ideas but taking them from my head and applying them to paper/ projects is another story. Michaels staff helps with bringing those ideas to life. When you first walk into the store it is a bit overwhelming because theres so many things jammed right in front of you. As well as so many aisles to choose from and unless you have a real sure fire idea of what you'll need, then you're definitely going to have to ask for help. This store has everything from creating projects for: birthdays, weddings, jewelry to even painting. They also offer items to help with holidays or any special event, and even a picture framing department. I also discovered they have workshops that offer classes on specific topics. I personally love going to the picture framing department because I always find that I have pictures that I want to put an elegant and personalized touch to them. The staff in that department always knows how to give me the best support for any of my ideas. They are attentive and passionate about their job. While at the same time never making you feel rushed. I actually find myself having fun after a while. So to state that Michael's is an art students dream is an understatement. Absolutely love oh my gosh. my one favorite store, in the whole wide world! Bright, happier lighting compared to the nearby JoAnn's Fabrics. Almost everything you can imagine, for supplies for the art world. if youre a constant crafter, you know the art world never ends. it only grows. There is always more supplies you can get, more you need, more you don't have, more ideas you didn't even know you were going to get. Staff is great-- never seen a grumpy associate. Is that because art makes everyone happy?! my boyfriend says I come here too much. he says once every weekend is too much --because he drives me and has to come in with me and stay with me for the entire hour. I have never been so frustrated shopping. It is the holiday season, and when I picked a few things up for myself, there was 17 people in line. They've converted almost all of their cash registers to self check out, and there was only two registers that cashiers stood behind. With all these people in line, many of them were returning things, and so they were forced to stand in line. There was only one cashier, and yet there were at least six people on the floor. One of which, I believe, was the manager (Sean) who just kept walking back-and-forth through our line, telling people that they could use self check out. When he said that, I asked if we would be able to take advantage of the employee discount since we're checking ourselves out and of course he replied no. There are too many stories about how people can legally get in trouble using self check out if they make a mistake, so I don't bother. But it also bothers me that they won't put cashiers behind the registers and they make me do all of their work. If they gave you a discount for using self check out, I might entertain it. I easily stood in line for 30 minutes. I will definitely be finding alternative stores for the future. read more

2 horrifying experiences! If Jolene is working as the manager, do yourself a favor, and get out of Michael's as soon as possible! Rudest and most unhelpful store manager that I've ever experienced! I was there two weeks ago asking about buying a prepackaged frame that I wanted but did not want to buy unless I was sure the matting could come out? Nobody in the store, or I should say the one employee working at the front had any idea what I was even talking about. I couldn't find any answers anywhere. That frame was $50. I left it there and left at the store due to the stupidy of the employees with no info! Then I left the store. Knowing I probably shouldn't have, I went for a second time and bought a pre-lit shelf and that frame. The frame ended up working but the shelf did not fit my collection. It was $130. I waited forever in line just to be greeted by Jolene telling me because I had torn the corners off the package? They couldn't return it. Jolene was so rude. She never even greeted me or took any inkling of care about my problem. Not smiling, completely stone face and rude as hell. I asked if I could speak to anybody else to try to get my money back and she said no. Bitter Jolene gets four thumbs down. Stay away from this, Michaels, they will scam you! This is the story I wrote for BLICK. You should go there instead of to Michaels. I have a picture in a beautiful frame hanging on my wall. Today, I decided I was going to try and frame 2 more prints of mine with the same frame as my first print. I called Blicks and they said they do custom framing but would need to confirm they have the exact design. I could take pictures or bring in frame. Since Blinks was only a 10-minute walk from my house I said I could bring the print in the frame and the two other prints I want to be framed. When I arrived Bethany immediately let me know that they didn't have the exact frame, but she still took the next 15 minutes trying to find a frame that matched. I think she could tell I wasn't completely happy, so she turned over the frame to show that the original was created at Michaels. Since the original frame is 4 years old, she suggested I call Michaels to see if they still carry the frame before heading down to Coma--Which is 12 miles from me. I called Michaels, explained the situation and the woman on the other end tried to pull up my account. It didn't show up. I explained I got the frame over 4 years ago from a different state. Because I didn't remember where I got the frame, she couldn't pull up my previous order and the only other option was to come into the store. I explained to her that Michaels was over 10 miles away, and I didn't feel comfortable getting in an uber and coming to her if they weren't sure they sold the frame. I should mention, at this time, Bethany is searching on the Michael's site to see if she found anything similar. The woman from Michaels responded, there was nothing she could do. I asked if I could send a picture of the frame just to see if they have something. Her response was no. At that point, I was through, she was rude and unhelpful, so I responded.. "Your customer service is awful. I am here at Blick with a woman who is trying to get you, a competitor, my business. If you would have tried harder, I would have gladly spent my money with you, but I will stay with Blink and buy a different frame. Thanks. Bye." Bethany then apologies for the woman's behavior! Even if I was going to spend my money at another store! I ended up buying the frames from Bethany at Blink. and I was willing to spend a lot of money since it is a limited-edition print. I am glad someone helpful got the money. Michael's framing department was a fail and in all honestly I will probably go back and replace the original frame I have from Michael's with one from Blick. Customer service is important. I understand we are in a pandemic, and everyone is going through their own issues, but I told the Michael's representative I was nervous to get in a cab, and drive 10 miles just to be told the frame is discontinued. Ordered two custom prints from my photos. One on canvas one on metal. couldn't find my items, which I paid for at time of order.I returned a week later,they found one. I returned a third time and they still couldn't find it. They assured me they would call me when they found it. Never called me back. After three attempts on my part. I called American Express, with a complaint against Michaels, and they refunded my money for the lost item. Look elsewhere for custom prints. read more

While waiting for a friend's appointment in Colma (near Daly City), I stopped by Michael's with my 50% (today only) coupon. Admittedly, as I become older I am becoming less craft-minded, but a Yelp Elite event last year that had a table project of liquid chalk for drawing on blackboard labels on a canning jar has inspired me to get a set of liquid chalk. Surprisingly, a set of 4 colors sells for $14. That's $3.50/chalk. Good thing I have a 50% off coupon. Before checking out, I walked around this organized and clean store surprised to find the clientele's kids not out of control. Moreover, the employees asked if I found what I needed and if I needed a basket. Not bad for a Saturday afternoon! The service I experienced today at this location was amazing. I had trouble finding my buy online pick up in store order. Upon trying to find it, I immediately was hesitant to ask for help because it happened to be Black Friday, and the store was super busy. I initially flagged down a young girl who was kind and helpful, and she sent me to the framing department to get help. On my way there, the manager of the store immediately took ownership of my problem and found my order. I was so thankful for the kindness she gifted to me, it's really rare to get the kind of service she gave at a chain retail stores like this one . My order did get lost, but she didn't give up until she found my items! I was thrilled because I had kind of given up hope that they would be found. I have been to that location two other times before that, and I have seen the employees get abused by customers a lot, arguing about prices and stock and what not. I've personally seen the staff always keep their cool, help however they can, and do their best. This location gets an A+ in my book so far. The store is usually pretty clean, and this location has a bunch of self checkout counters so the line usually moves very fast. The best part of this location by far is the manager and the staff. I love coming to michaels for all my arts and crafts needs, it is by far my favorite craft store in the area. I have been knitting alot lately and love their selection of yarn, you just have to be sure to check the bin you grabbed the item from though because they get mixed up alot due to people browsing. You might think its a different price than it actually is. Another thing i love to purchase here is picture frames, they have a great selection for very reasonable pricing. Great selection on matting as well. There are so many items i get from Michael's from puzzle glue - brush markers thay I'm not going to go through all of them. Sometimes however I come in here not always 100%sure what I am looking for, and the staff is always very helpful assisting me on the matter. The checkout line also gets crazy but they actually tend to move it quite fast all things considered. I do reccomend going early to avoid the lines if you can help it, because they get really long. During the Holidays the line can wrap around the store! Throughout the year it is less crowded but the line still gets back there on the weekends. read more

This place is a little like purgatory. You think you'll pass right through with what you need, but alas -- No. The aisles are a never-ending mess; piles of despair neglected by the, I suspect, two staff members that are working at any given time. That said, I have only ever laid eyes on a single cashier working at any one time. I say this because you have lots of time to watch said cashier work while you stand in a queue 25 people long. Desperate pleas for "additional assistance" are typically ignored by the other staff creatures that I remain firmly convinced are mythical or, perhaps, invisible. All in all, entering this Michaels is like consciously making the decision to put your fist in your blender and then turning it on. You knew it would hurt and you can't explain why you did it. read more

I get custom framing at Michael's to the tune of about $2000 a year. I have worked with both Terrell and Mike and they are terrific. They have great ideas to try and get the best deal for me. They are always helpful and professional. We were there getting mats cut and a middle aged white woman was being a complete b**** to Terrell about some item that she wanted and it wasn't in stock. I'm a white female by the way. This woman was belligerent, rude and insulting, but Terrell did all he could to try and please her and remained professional. I'm writing this because sometimes it's the customers that are the problem, not the employees. Treat others as you want to be treated, kindness costs nothing. read more

Michael's will continue to top off at 3 stars simply because of their borderline unfair pricing scheme. most things in the store are overpriced then marked down as half off. Be sure to check those out by simply searching 'Michaels coupons' on google and something should pop up. I was just here today and they had a 50% coupon off one regularly priced item (but definitely check the fine print because exclusions may apply.) The coupon says it's expiring on the 5th...but I feel like Michaels always restarts the same deal a couple days after. So don't worry too much about rushing to buy things during that time frame, I swear the discount will always be there. A lot of their holiday stuff is on sale obviously because it's that time of year...the season of giving soooo that means presents, presents, presents!! Decorative holiday ribbons are 60% and most holiday items are 50%. I just love Michaels. I rarely go to JoAnn's for arts & crafts. I feel like Michaels has much more variety and has good quality. Don't order online and expect to pick up your order in Daly City. As the manager of the store said: "We don't have anything to do with online. We only fill the orders." Which they do badly. I ordered picture frames that were on sale buy 1 get 2 free. I paid for 4 expecting 12. I got 0. The first worker came out with 4 frames. I told her I purchased 12. The second worker comes out telling me I have to come in to the store and give her my credit card. I'm in a high risk group for COVID-19 and don't go into stores or give people my credit card. Then the manager comes out to the sidewalk without nothing in his hands but the invoice that says the frames have been picked up. Threw the invoice on the sidewalk and told me "Too bad. An associate signed me up to their free loyalty program a few weeks ago. After you sign up, you download the app to your phone or iPad. Boy I'm glad I signed up because you get special coupons on the app that you don't get from email or their circulars. They also let you combine coupons, if applicable. Today, I cashed in on the 20% off on everything and 40% off one regular item in the morning. The 20% for everyone else applies after 3:00 pm today but I can use mine in the morning. I saved $10. My Mom is a huge fan of this place and always has been. For years she would tell me stories about all the great stuff she found here. I pretty much just nodded my head and was like, "ugh huh. great stuff Mom." I honestly never expected to walk through the doors, until.... Now I am engaged and the world has turned upside down. I've been to Michael's at least 6 times in the last 2 months after never being here once in 35 years. Such is life. We showed up to save money, plain and simple. A friend of a friend mentioned that you can cut costs by heading to Michael's to find wedding invitations, print them yourself instead of dropping serious cash to have it done. Sure enough, they had a decent selection of wedding invitations. Clearly not as extravagant as the ginormous binders at party stores, but we found the perfect set. Overall, I think this place is cool, but I am pretty confident that when I leave the wedding planner phase of my life, I will get back to never going here. read more

This is the worst customer service I have ever experienced in retail in all my life. My daughters and I came in to buy a few things, and of course the store was packed. About one minute in, my four year old was literally run down by the store manager as she ran to call for security. When I said something, she completely ignored me and walked away. I checked to make sure my baby was ok, and then followed her to once again to address this situation and ask to speak to her supervisor. She told me oh sorry but if you knew what I was dealing with...sorry. When I asked for another manager, I just got a half hearted apology. This is just disgraceful...she is a small child! You are a grown ass woman who could have really hurt her. who the hell cares about some craft shit getting stolen!!! I'm so pissed! One woman told me she tried working erlsewhere but came back because it's such a special place. I've been anxiously awaiting the opening of this Michael's b/c driving all the way to San Mateo isn't always in the cards. A friend of mine is on their emailing list and forwarded me the info, I went and signed up for my own emails soon after. I knew that I wasn't going to go on opening day. I'm not insane you know. I printed out my 50% coupon b/c strangely there was no Michael's ad in my Sunday paper. WTF? We would get them before they opened in the neighborhood *shakes head* Doesn't make sense to me. Anyhow I went on the Monday after and it was still bustling. Bustling with the Senior Citizen crowd. Lol. They must've thought the same thing as me and didn't care for the mess. I like the high ceilings unlike that of the other previous Michael's stores that I had been to. The organization is good too but the baking aisle/ section seemed a lot smaller than the San Mateo location. That's my favorite section in craft stores, I'm a baker! Or a wannabe one. I found my stuff and grabbed the girls something in the $1 bin and made my way to the line. Despite having all the registers open there was still a hefty line. But, it wasn't as bad as Sunday's line which apparently snaked to the back of the store, as was told a number of times by the Manager. The line moved fairly fast though. I happened to find another coupon in my mailbox the next day, which worked in my favor b/c I had something else I needed to buy. I went on Friday and there was no line. Nice. I guess the novelty of the store has died down and the die hard crafters already got their fix. I am totally happy they have come to town. Beverly's and Joanne's are good for fabrics, which Michael's is lacking. But they make up in so many other different areas!!! Expansive parking lot with so many other things in the "shopping center", since Michael's opened up I don't think I've seen so many cars and so few parking spots other than around the holidays. read more
