Clandestino has grown up, literally. What began as a small operation in Frederick has moved into a…read morelarger space, and the expansion suits them well. This is Puerto Rican pitorro, also known as ron cañita, made with care and intention rather than gimmickry. Many local liquor stores now carry the brand, and it is well worth picking up a bottle, but visiting the distillery is an experience in itself. The founder is a fellow Puerto Rican born retired military member, a background I share, and like me, he has put down roots in Maryland. That story is reflected clearly in the brand's own framing, "Puerto Rican born, Maryland made." The space feels grounded and unpretentious, and that sensibility carries through to the hospitality. We arrived late on a Saturday and were still welcomed warmly, never rushed. We were taken care of by the founder's daughter, who was exceptionally kind, attentive, and knowledgeable. She guided us through a flight that included the traditional pitorro, almond, pineapple, coffee, coconut chai, and several seasonal offerings. The flavors were thoughtful and well balanced; even the infused expressions retained a clear rum backbone rather than drifting into novelty. We enjoyed them enough to leave with several bottles. This is artisanal pitorro done right, rooted in Puerto Rican tradition and confidently made in Maryland. Buying it locally is convenient, but going to the distillery is where the people, the story, and the spirit fully come together.

This local speakeasy has quickly moved its way to the top of my list…read more I love the ease of parking, safe neighborhood, and spacious speakeasy space. Always great service by bar manager Charlie, fantastic food and beverage menu and options. My favs so far are the grilled wings and chicken tortilla soup. The drinks are pretty awesome, and Charlie the Great can alter beverages to your preference if you prefer. This is an overall mezcal bar, but they have other libations as well. My fav is John Updike's Old Fashioned. My son ordered and loved the Strawberry Gin & Tonic. This establishment is a great conversation starter, and I look forward to returning asap.

The exterior looks worn down and unassuming. The interior is small but was able to accommodate our party. The service was good, with both bartenders taking turns serving our table. I ordered happy hour chips and queso, and the queso felt very unfresh and can-like. They only offer one basket of chips & salsa complimentary per the menu but we were a party of 5 and received two. My happy hour app was rung up as regular price. The hard shell bean tacos I ordered had very little beans in them and only beans, no other toppings. There was lettuce, tomato, and cheese on the plate on the side, so I had to dress my own tacos. They tasted okay, not great, not bad. The $6 Monday margaritas are for the 12 oz and are made strong. It's a $1 more for a flavor and $1 more for a larger size (16 oz). The men's bathroom is small and had two urinals that are right next to the bathroom door. I will probably stick with my usual spot in Laurel, called Chido's.

The salsa you could tell was made fresh and had just enough kick, the chips were delicious! I ordered the Agave Burrito and it was stuffed full of shredded chicken and was the perfect size with refried beans + rice. My friend ordered the California burrito with El Pastor and it was stuffed full and also very delicious! We didn't have room for dessert but the churro cheesecake sounded amazing! This place felt very authentic and was the perfect balance of noise and being able to talk! Service, ambience + food all get a thumbs up from me!

I went to Little Havana this weekend for a wedding after party and it was seriously the best time…read more My mojitos were some of the best I have ever had and the bartenders were so kind. The way the space was decorated (from previous party decorations) was so fun and the perfect vibe. The food was good and perfect bite sized bites. The crab balls and the arepas were delicious. The space is big and full of so much character and the perfect space for a party. I look forward to going back here one day, to eat and drink again!

The location, vibe, and deck on a nice night are FANTASTIC…read more But the food is consistently mediocre--runs 2-3 stars pretty much across the board. I've been a number of times, and I keep coming back hoping I just 'ordered the wrong thing' from the menu, but alas no...most recently this was a tablewide talking point and consensus. We've pretty much given up on finding anything to eat worth coming back for. Service is always friendly but usually slow (as they're usually busy) and not very attentive. We usually do a round of drinks with dinner, which are also nothing special. Except (and this is a big one) we're starting to suspect they aren't storing their margarita mix properly. Turns out, *multiple* people in our party, across completely different visits (including just recently), have ordered the strawberry margarita and about halfway through it started feeling sick (only drink of the night each time). The fantastic atmosphere might balance the consistently disappointing food, but if what you're serving is making multiple people sick, that's problematic. So if you can get a seat outside by the water, it's a great atmosphere...but if you stay, don't expect a great meal, and definitely avoid the strawberry margarita.
