This was my 2nd time coming to Mezzo. My friend used to come a lot and introduced me to this place. I feel like it's necessary to say that this is one of those places that is actually worth buying a salad at. Other places are so overpriced and give you like 3 leaves but Mezzo is next level. We arrived on a Saturday around 1pm, it was raining and there was a line out the door. You can imagine I wasn't very enthused about waiting, however we saw the line move rather quickly so we stayed. It took maybe about 7 mins to get inside the building so I was happy about that. I ordered the chef delight with chicken salad and it was humongous! Which means I saved half of it for dinner. I asked for the poppy seed dressing on the side so that my salad didn't get soggy for later. Might I say, that poppy seed dressing is crack! It's so good. Their portions are so big and worth it that you can essentially share it with another person. The chicken salad is so flavorful and I really enjoy that they add a mix of beans and chickpeas. I would also like to note that although it may seem packed, people are constantly going in and out so there were plenty of tables available when it was our turn to sit down. But I would like for there to be a little bit more upkeep on the tables as the salads are so big and they're overflowing. I think my previous review was a little harsh. This place is great. When I lived in Berkeley I really did keep coming back. Their lines were always out the door but the staff was great and it moved quickly. The interior was nice and welcoming and was right next to the Southside apartments. The sandwiches were amazing and I kept coming back. All of their meat was fresh, they had vegetarian options, and they had soups and salads (though I highly recommend their sandwiches more). I don't know what else to say that hasn't been mentioned several thousand times already about this place. The food is genuinely some of THE BEST you can get on Telegraph or hell even in Downtown Berkeley. The price, portions, quality, and taste is absurd. Service is just mainly college kids, go easy on them they need to survive too. They just want to promptly and correctly do their job. Everything else is self serve like water and getting rid of your dishes. Ambiance is fine, just a standard eatery. I see a lot of people hanging out sometimes but I feel it's best to enjoy your meal and head out since it can get pretty busy and just being a bit more considerate. As for the actual food, I've only ever gotten the Pastrami on Honey Wheat with everything on it. I tried their half sandwich and simple green salad with the Green Goddess and it's actually quite heavenly. I REALLY want to try their specialty salad here, but that's like shooting off your own arm by depriving yourself of their sandwiches. MY FAVORITE LUNCH PLACE OF ALL TIME! I seriously never get tired of their sandwiches and there are so many options to choose from. It was pretty good but not as good as the BLTA sandwich. I liked that the chicken salad wasn't overly salty. I will say that the pickles and banana peppers flavors were more prominent that I would've liked. Regarding personal preference, I don't think I'd order the chicken salad sandwich with pickles and banana peppers next time. I got the salad with poppy seed dressing. Half sandwich half salad combo 10/10- I always get this combo everytime I'm in berkeley and it's always so good. I get the tossed greens with poppyseed dressing (green goddress dressing is also fire) which is super light but adds a lot of flavor. This meal was so refreshing I genuinely don't have any complaints, it's always my go-to in Berkeley. Mint lemonade 6.57/10- I wanted something refreshing to drink and ended up getting this. I forgot I got this before and wasn't a huge fan. I wish the lemonade flavor was more prominent, but I think the mint overpowered it. I'm jealous that Berkeley students get such easy access to Mezzo on their campus because the food here is so good. I'm really not even a sandwich person, but I've been craving the honey wheat bread since I tried it a few weeks ago. Not only are the sandwiches and salads super fresh, but they are also huge and can easily be shared with people. When you order, make sure you tell them while preparing the sandwiches what extra toppings and sauces that you want because they won't always prompt you. There's also lots of seating indoors and outdoors since it shares an area with Raleigh's. I tried the chicken salad sandwich on honey wheat (this bread is a must) and loved it, but my friend really likes the Black Forest ham sandwich. We also shared a chef salad with tuna between 4 people -- that's how big it was! All the veggies were super fresh and I like the addition of the honey wheat bread, avocado, chick peas, and sprouts to the salad. At the cashier area, here you also order drinks. I'm not exactly sure what the style is, if you only came here to drink kombucha, but I believe you still need to be line with the food orders. It's quite here with so many guests able to sit anywhere, so listen carefully for your order and the questions they ask. I also suggest to raise your voice loud and clear (and through the mask) so the staff can understand. I had to ask the different bread options and which one was the softest. Seeing how wide the sandwich is, I decided that eating with a softer bread will be less likely to hurt my jaw. Once we got our food, we decided to move to the outer patio, and I'm glad we did. It's a beautiful and cozy patio. There was an opaque plastic sheet covering the rooftop, so no cold winter air blew in. There was a large tv and some other screens, so a game was playing. The seats were benches stylized in the booth like style, so each area felt like a personal space, that could comfortably fit up to six people. Finally, onto the food. I have split up the sandwich with my relative. The sandwich was as stuffed as a hamburger and very sturdy. I took a lot of bites, but most of the food stayed between the sandwich bread. The overall sandwich is very refreshing with the many greens, sprouts, and tomatoes. I enjoyed the pop of the mustard too. We were very happy on how stuffed we became after we ate - and the price we're very pleased all around. Obviously the greatest salad place in the world, been coming probably once a month for 14 years aside from the dark ages where they burned down. Absurd value, the poppyseed dressing is ethereal, all the bread is fresh baked and fantastic - but choose the japanese milk bread over ANYTHING if it's available. Today, Wednesday my partner and I came in to order sandwiches around 9:30PM. We entered the line and were just looking at the menu to see what we wanted and the girl with the black hair and shirt working tonight kept trying get our attention like "Hello hello hello hello" while we were talking to each other about what we wanted to get. That threw me off guard but it was whatever. Next she was making our sandwiches. She uses 1 spatula of mustard for 4 loaves of bread and slaps it on hastily. First loaf having (kid you not) 1 cm of mustard and the loaf for the 2nd sandwich not having any. I get it. It's a long day. So I politely ask her if she could take some off the first and just transfer it to the 2nd sandwich. She glares at me, scrapes off ALL of the mustard of the first one, and puts it all on the 2nd one. So that's literally the same thing as I started with. She proceeds to make and cut the sandwich, I see that there aren't any pickles so I ask her if "there are pickles in there yet". She doesn't even do anything to acknowledge my statement, grabs a handful of pickles and slaps it on as a lump in the very middle of the sandwich. She's MUTTERING something under her breath. At this point, I'm so irritated and uncomfortable I just wanted to leave. She finishes the sandwiches, puts it in the box, since she didn't spread anything evenly throughout the sandwich when she's done, a 3rd of the innards of my sandwich is laying on the prepping board. She just grabs the handful and stuffs it in the box. When she hands me my 2 boxes, they're literally so gross and wet and there's a chunk of avocado sticking to the bottom. I get that the boxes get dirty sometimes here but this was disgusting. I had 1 more order I fulfill but when she was done she went straight to her friend to talk (I didn't want to bombard her w/ so many orders at once). I tell her I have 1 more order and she straight up ignores me and I'm just standing there waiting for her to acknowledge me. Her friend looks at her, then at me, and from her face I can tell that she knows something's up with the girl's nasty attitude so she asks me what I want.
