I just went to Mezeh for the last time. I have never been there when there wasn't some kind of a problem. Today it was food and service. Today I ordered the make your own bowl and selected chicken kabob and falafel. The chicken was tasteless and the falafel, which I love, was spicy hot. I have never eaten spicy hot falafel before. EVER! I have eaten a lot of falafel but never spicy. I didn't like it. I don't want my falafel to be hot. Also there were many protein choices that were labeled spicy. Why? This area is not on the eat spicy hot food until your head sweats list. I ordered the lemon garlic dressing hoping it would be like the garlic dressing at Cava (their sister company) but it wasn't even close. In fact, it wasn't even good. The balance was way off. All I could taste was the oil. Not a hint of lemon. The mouth feel was totally oily. The balance between the oil and the acid of the lemon was truly off. Maybe someone forgot to put the lemon in it? I hated it. I wish I hadn't put it all over my food before I tasted it. The service was very poor. I had an important question prior to arriving and called the restaurant twice but no one EVER answered the phone. Who doesn't answer a ringing business phone? What kind of terrible business practice is that? Remember when a business phone had to be answered prior to the third ring? I do. Last but by no means least, the staff spoke very broken English. Very, very broken. In fact, I think that some of the staff didn't actually speak any English at all. I am the last person to complain about Spanish speakers trying to make their way here. I was engaged to a Mexican National for six years and spent about 70% of my time on that side of the border. Consequently, I am much better at understanding English spoken with a heavy Hispanic accent than most Americans, unless they actually live on the border. Here in Virginia I find that most people hear a thick Hispanic accent and just give up and stop listening immediately. Well, today even I struggled to understand and the staff person had trouble reading my name on the order and needed help identifying it. So, I'm sorry to say this is my last visit. I have always preferred Cava to Mezeh and now I actually dislike Mezeh. Too bad because there isn't a Cava close to my home. read more

Ever since Yelp announced that they were open, I could not wait to visit this place as it is one of my personal favorites within the area. The first one I found was the one over in Hampton and while it did take a bit for them to find their stride, I was never really super excited crossing the M/M just to go. I guess they've taken the time to learn from the others and have done well at meeting the demand in a short period of time. I'm happy that they are now local. Upon entering, the only thing that may intimidate a newbie is that you walk in with no direction on what to do, etc. It may help if they include the menus closer to the doorway so that people can at least get the gist of what to do. It's a lot to take in and for people who are meticulous with knowing the flavor profile each and every single item on their plate, it may be a bit much. Ordered Mezeh's catering. The food was delicious and high quality. We ordered the shawarma package and added a falafel and extra shawarma. The pitas and all the sides were fresh and amazing. We even managed to please some folks from the midwest who were unfamiliar with mediterranean cuisine...it was time for them to know! I can see this is going to be a problem. I live across the street and decided to walk over tonight to grab a bite while my boyfriend was out with friends. I got a bowl with falafel and shredded lamb and almost all the toppings. Two big things here. The falafel. Bro. The BEST I have ever had. Like, in my life. Now I like falafel, but it's known to have a neutral flavor and can tend to be dry. But this falafel was so moist and omg flavorful. I will never get another protein again. Falafel for life. Next. The spicy feta hummus. I licked the bowl. I mean, I used the pita, but I would have used my tongue if I needed to. That tells you all you need to know about that. It's amazing.
