Small place in a strip shopping center next to the Sub. base on Hampton Blvd. The service was quick and helpful with suggestions. My wife had the hummus with chicken Shawarma and accompanying generous amount of Pita Bread. Big bowl of hummus with olive oil in the center and pieces of grilled chicken throughout the top. I had the Lamb Shawarma Platter. Pieces of grilled lamb atop a bed of saffron rice with a salad and hummus and pita bread. In both entrees the portions were very generous. We had to doggie bag both orders after eating, for a next day lunch at home. We finished with the 2 pieces of pistachio Baklava that was very delicious. I would recommend highly the mint lemonade. It is a refreshing winner. You will not leave hungry.

It has been nearly three weeks; I can stop thinking about No Frill Bar and Grill…read more I'm a military spouse, so I know my time in Hampton Roads is coming to an end soon. I visited a Hampton Roads Restaurant group on FB and asked if someone was visiting from out of town: What is your go-to place to take them? Out of 90+ comments, No Frill Bar and Grill was mentioned the most - six times! So when I finally had a day off and some other business to tend to in Norfolk, it was the perfect excuse to finally try them. No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

I was curious about barbecue in Norfolk so we got some takeout from The Fishin' Pig…read more I decided to get the fried green tomatoes and the beef brisket platter with extra brisket (because two people were sharing), collard greens, and green beans. I had a few allergy-related questions and was able to get answers quickly because the cashier checked with the kitchen. Unfortunately my questions were focused on dairy so we were surprised by the bacon on the beans and other meat (probably pork) under the collard greens. My husband doesn't eat pork so he ended up only eating the beef. The cashier said the order would only take about ten minutes so I enjoyed a quick drink at the bar while waiting. If we get a chance to return I'll probably get the fried green tomatoes and just beef brisket (no sides).

A couple specific food problems were: 1) Friend green tomatoes. Given the presentation, we asked our server if they were fried pickles. Nope! Okay, that's fine. At first. Thought they were just super hot and need a minute to cool down. But they were drenched in oil from the fryer. At first I tried dabbing them in the basket. Then, realizing that was doing no good and the breading was just going to be soggy, I took them out and blotted them on the brown paper table cover. We only at a few. Not good. 2) The meat - pulled pork, brisket, and Alaskan haddock - were all lacking flavor.

In fact, I'm known among…read moremy friends and family as a very critical eater--some have even jokingly called me a food critic. So for me to take the time to write this says a lot. From the moment we walked into Oceanview Diner, we felt at home. There was an immediate warmth--like stepping into what America is supposed to feel like--people talking, laughing, and genuinely connecting over good food. The attention to detail was impossible to miss. Fresh-cut flowers sat on each table, adding a simple but thoughtful touch. Before our meals even arrived, we were served homemade herb focaccia with olive oil--an unexpected and appreciated gesture. And yes, even the water stood out. Being near the ocean, you often get that slightly earthy taste, but this water was clean, crisp, and clearly filtered. Now, the food. I ordered the Parmesan-crusted chicken with roasted potatoes and collard greens. The chicken was juicy (not dry at all) and cooked perfectly--something that sounds simple but is rarely executed this well. The collards were good, though I personally would've liked just a touch more salt and a splash of vinegar to bring them fully to life. My partner ordered the fried flounder with asparagus and mashed potatoes and had nothing but praise. Not a single morsel was left on the plate, which tells you everything you need to know. Oceanview Diner delivered not just a meal, but an experience rooted in care, pride, and hospitality. Thank you for an amazing visit--continued success to you, and a huge job well done to the kitchen staff.

Only regret was I wasn't hungry enough for the pot roast (fyi- pot roast and the stuffed figs were both daily specials) but the gravy was from that; it was literally my grandmas gravy. I didn't have dessert room either. I'll have to cross the HRBT for this. I Will.

The mac & cheese was just a test run which was way too salty so now I know my blood pressure is gonna be through the roof because that was sodium loaded not happy even though the banter at the bar was entertaining now I got back my stars down. I'm pissed.

We visited during the lunch rush. I'd say during our stay the location stayed about 70% or more full. Sorry, no pictures, but the wifey and I both had one of the 3 for deals. Drink, burger and fries for $10.99. The burger was done well and tasted good. Same with the fries. Now I will say the fries serving size was a bit small but again it was a $10.99 meal. Total bill was just under $25. As for the service. Our server (I think her name was JJ) was really good and I saw her bust her tail for our entire stay. I'm not sure how many tables she was working. But she checked on us several times and made sure we had refills on our sweet teas. Again she did a great job. As for the location: It's a bit older but it seemed to be clean. So again.
