    #25. Fajitas Parillada
    Pete R.

Stopped in for dinner where my wife and I shared a fajita plate and a couple beers. We seated ourselves and were quickly brought menus and our server took our drink order. Wife had a 16 ounce draft Dos Equis and I had a 32 ounce Modela Especial. We opted to split the fajita plate ($17.99) as we weren't super hungry. Glad we did as the portion was large. We asked for mixed chicken and beef. The dish was very quickly brought out hot and sizzling. It was served with beans, rice, pico de gallo, guacamole, a grilled jalapeño, and warm flour tortillas. We were also provided a basket of chips and 4 different salsas. Everything was delicious. The beef was slightly tough, but the flavor made up for it. Our server was very attentive, stopping by to make sure everything was good. We finished up and were brought our check and settled it right there at the table; no waiting to go and run the card first. Bottom line; we'll be back. Service 10/10 Food 10/10 Ambiance 9/10 (the music was a little too loud for us)

Ceviche is a must try. The taco was pretty good but meat was slightly tough but very flavorful

The ambiance is excellent. Always playing authentic mexican songs. The servers are attentive and the chips and salsa and beans arrive at the table within a few minutes of sitting down. The Fried Tilapia is amazing. We will be coming back for more!

This restaurant was convenient to our hotel on a recent weekend. We had actually dined at another location of this local chain the day before. Food was decent so we decided to try breakfast. The website had a picture of every menu item. Umm, OK it's wierd. Those photos ALMOST drove us away. Clearly, they didn't hire a professional. Our friends drove over from Killeen to dine with us also saw the online stuff. We sipped coffee wondering if our food would match the bad photos; each plate was hilariously similar in basic presentation. I mean, who puts bacon on top of an omelette? Yet, my beef fajita version had the meat inside? Buddy had the meat lovers (also inside) omelette; hashbrowns and biscuit with gravy. His girl had the KETO breakfast; GF had the migas. Overall a tasty breakfast experience. Extra star for the service!

Browning Guacamole... looked like taken from someone's plate and served to us.

Okay my husband and I come from Chicago where there is a rich grouping of delightful Mexican restaurants. Been here nearly a year, a only discovering a tiny sampling of good places. Okay Taqueria Mexicano, has stolen our hearts and forks. But tonight I made a pickup of rice /beans and two orders of guacamole with chips. Browning Guacamole... looked like taken from someone's plate and served to us. Not happy folks not happy.

We can't fight the feeling! The feeling of craving... It could be an addiction because we've often found ourselves sitting in tne dining room of this place. Our mission: Try almost everything on the menu! Who has done this someplace before? If we return enough times, this can be accomplished. Who's in? This list doesn't even include all the meals we had at Mexicano Grill. Instead, we kept pictures for your drooling enjoyment. Carne asada con nopales y ranchero sauce + melted monterey jack Caldo de Res con arroz y tortilla Beef chimichangas ... just to name a measly few. Of all these, may we recommend their... This is our second time here and enjoyed our food came out fast to us. friendly service tacos came out nice and hot . Taco plate with rice and beans steaming hot . Lots of parking.

    Where's the Verde sauce?

This is the third and last time I visited this restaurant. I ordered chicken enchiladas Verde. Three corn chicken enchiladas with Verde sauce, no Verde sauce, just corn, chicken and a little Monterey jack cheese. Asked for no beans, got beans. I took the order back and still no Verde sauce to be found, just dry tortillas, shredded chicken and a little Monterey jack cheese. disappointing! I will not be going back. What's this issue? ? I'm not Hispanic, but my relatives are and my niece and nephew. Now I'm afraid to eat my dinner. Will return it tomorrow for a refund!

What's left of a very delicious steak burrito!!

Well first, the place is inviting for people of a certain age as well as for young people with many decorations evocative of the hippie era. It's clean and very pleasant. The menu is ambitious, I think they try too hard to be cute. And though the service was excellent, it all came down to the food for me. I ordered the Birdie Trio. It sounded interesting. But too many of these restaurants trying to do chicken and waffles take the shortcut and use processed boneless chicken parts reformed to look like an actual natural piece. I was supposed to get a thigh on each waffle. The chicken vaguely resembled thighs. But the meat was white and very salty. Not good. Should I ever drop in again, I'll stick with a more traditional combination and maybe my extra will be better. And oh, that credit card machine is set at a default of about 22% tip and that's on top of tax. Watch out!

The evening started with a game of Restaurant Hide and Seek. After being seated, we sat for quite a while wondering if we were part of a social experiment--no water, no menus, no acknowledgment. Eventually a waiter arrived and, very honestly, said he was there to take our order because we'd been "ignored." Accurate assessment. We placed our order, and later a woman who appeared to be a manager brought out our appetizer, apologized for no one taking care of us, and said the appetizer would be comped. A very nice gesture--unfortunately one that didn't make it to the bill, where the appetizer showed up like it never heard that conversation. The food itself? Genuinely good. No complaints there. However, my wife's Caesar salad never arrived. She didn't bring it up because, frankly, after the earlier disappearing-staff act, it felt like tempting fate. We paid the bill (about $100), including a surprise 3% credit card fee we didn't see posted anywhere. We opted to take dessert home, mostly because the night already felt complete... enough. Bottom line: the food has real potential, but the service needs leadership, consistency, and maybe a map. It's hard to justify coming back in the future when you factor in parking fees, credit card fees, and the possibility of being politely ignored on a special occasion. It's a shame--good food deserves better service.

What BBQ place on the list happens to be open on a Monday (and quite frankly, seven days a week)? Miller's Smokehouse in Belton. Miller's Smokehouse has one of the longest tenures on the Texas Monthly Top 50, making the list four times in a row (the third-highest behind Louie Mueller and Snow's). They've got their business down. As I arrived, I parked in a free parking lot just across the street and got into the line around 12:30. The line moves pretty efficiently, and you order separately from the barbecue line. I think this immediately felt disheartening as a barbecue fan. You kinda expect to get your food while in line and watch the assembly of workers put it together, instead of them being in a separate location in the back giving you order numbers. It doesn't feel like a true Texas barbecue experience and more like a Dickey's Barbecue Pit. Instead of going for a tray, I opted for one of their specialty sandwiches, the El Gallo Picante. It has their spicy hot link sausage and their smoked chicken topped with coleslaw, onions, jalapeños, pickles, and barbecue sauce. I also got a side of their broccoli salad out of curiosity and a roll of their homemade cornbread. I got my drink and sat down with my roll of cornbread. It wasn't long until my tray came to me. The sandwich stood on its own as a behemoth. So much chicken and sausage fell out of the bun. The sandwich was less concerned about being a sandwich and more focused on creating a space to try and contain a mixture of ingredients. It wasn't bad, but it was hard to say anything other than that I felt uninspired by the entire thing. The sausage was fine, the chicken was kinda dry, but everything together with all the separate ingredients masked the meats' faults. The broccoli salad was a unique side that I had never seen before at a barbecue joint, so I wanted to try it. It was cool, but not something I'd get again. As for the cornbread, it was quality, but if that's the most impressive part of the meal, then I'm questioning the establishment's ability to create a good barbecue experience. I think it's so cool to have so many special barbecue places near me and the ability to try so many, but I'm starting to wonder if the places that stay on the list for four editions start to lose their oomph. Do they become complacent knowing they already have their business and are established? Is there any need to try and push the envelope when you're just a recurring guest on top barbecue lists? Is it a me issue? Is it my fault I went to Burnt Bean a week prior and now I'm trying a place that sells all-day barbecue? With your big brick-and-mortar and your TV screen menus, you're not as hungry as you used to be.
