The atmosphere is awesome but the service was terrible. Took forever just to get a bowl of tortilla chips and the salsa was completely puréed and flavorless. Waitress did not introduce herself and my drink came AFTER the meal was done. My husband had one beer and was never offered another. His chile Colorado was pedestrian and flavorless. My enchilada was ok but my steak tacos came with a hard shell. I requested warm soft corn tortillas to which the waitress asked "flour?" And I said no, corn. Even after repeating the order, the tortillas never came. Finally, the waitress appeared with my drink, as I said, AFTER we were done eating. She gave us the bill and was really quick collecting the funds once we put the credit card in the jacket. Went to Mexicali for the 1st time after reading about it. Atmosphere was good, average service - however the food was on the bland side. Bland refried, rice has no taste. The salsa & chips were the best things we had. Our enchiladas & tamlaes were cold in the middle. All of the food could of been much hotter. We usually don't venture away from our favorite Mexican food place, but we were going to a concert at Rabobank and had to find somewhere around to eat before. When we arrived, the place was pretty packed. But, they brought us chips and salsa while we waited which was nice. Once we got seated, our server was attentive for the most part but not real friendly (probably a little stressed about everyone trying to get in and out for the concert). I had the fanitas and they were okay...kinda of had a lot of grease. My husand had the taco and enchilada combo and it was nothing really special. Over all, that's what I would say about Mexicali's...it was okay...nothing really special. It was nice being able to get a good parking spot cor the concert and eat close enough to walk to both Mexicali's and the concert, but that would probably be the only reason we would return. read more

I ordered a chile verde taco and a cheese and onion enchilada. Both were fair, but somewhat bland. The rice and beans were good, and the salsa tasted like it was from a jar. It's not authentic Mexican food. But it will do the job. Their meat is ground beef, not carne asada, and the salsa is like out of a jar.

Food was on nothing that impressed me. Food I would rank as 3 stars but I am writing this review for the service. My dad wanted to come here for his birthday I called made reservations for dinner asked for a booth and asked that I wanted to make sure they brought the sombrero out and sang as well. We arrived at 5;45 for our 6 PM reservation they had no booths. Another family of 3 came In and were seated in a booth while we were waiting. I mentioned to the stewardess that it was his birthday if they could be sure to sing he said he would let the server know. About 6:20 we were finally seated. The food here is great. It is expensive but worth it I guess. So, why the one star? We went here tonight for a fun dinner with a friend. We were seated by the owner himself, and our waitress was doing a great job.....however, the party around the corner was acting like a bunch of drunks. It was so loud we couldn't even hear ourselves talk. We stopped a waiter, thinking he could politely ask them to calm down a little or switch us to a more secluded table. The owner comes over while we were talking with the waiter and we think, oh good, he's gonna come apologize and move us tables. We could not have been more wrong. He was so rude! Told us, "we can move you to this table," (one table over). Then, he decided to argue with us about moving us tables and treating us like WE were being loud and rude. I cannot believe he couldn't simply switch us tables or ask this party to be calm. I was so hurt and I started crying at the damn table. I literally spent almost $100 on dinner for us and we were here for maybe 30 minutes. As we were leaving, the owner (in a flat voice) says, "Bye people." I cannot believe the way we were treated and how incredibly rude the OWNER was. Very disturbing. So, good food, expensive prices, but not worth the RUDE attitudes from the owner and staff. read more

Been going to Mexicali for over 50 years. My parents took me as a child. I took my children throughout their lives; and I go myself at least once a week... as do my parents, ages 85 and 89. Best Mexican food in town and the absolute best Cadillac margaritas on the planet! Good guacamole. Good tortilla chips. Tacos, enchiladas, tamales, chili relleno... it is ALL so good. The recipes have stayed the same through the years as the same family has owned and managed it. I actually went to school with the sisters that started it all. This review is for the bar only. I would absolutely love coming here if the cocktail waitresses were not so incredibly rude. There is lots of space and after work it's a nice, dark, relaxing environment to have a drink in. The busboy is awesome. The two cocktail waitresses are impatient, snappy, pushy, and condescending. Our party was literally told to leave our table that we'd been at for 1.5 hours drinking and eating so they could seat someone else there.
