We live in SE Florida, and there used to be several Metro Diners on our area. Sadly they all closed just before COVID. when we saw this one, one of the few corporate owned stores, we came right over. Same favorites on the menu, and surprisingly what appeared to be, the same prices. Our server Makenzie came right over and answered all our questions, including whether they had half portions. She responded yes! I had forgotten! So I ordered my old favorite, chicken and waffles. My wife got the Bissel breakfast, which I explained to Mackenzie was the yiddish word for little. We decided to stop by for breakfast. The restaurant is located at the end of a strip mall in a shopping center with Publix, CVS, Aqua Grill, and several other businesses. The interior has a classic diner feel that reminded me of Denny's. It's a bit dated but still clean, bright, and welcoming. When you walk in, there's a sign letting you know to seat yourself anywhere. We ordered a basic breakfast and an omelet entrée. The food was decent overall, although I thought parts of the hash browns were a little overcooked. The highlight of our visit was the service. Our waitress was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout the meal. The menu is wide enough to get any breakfast and lunch item that is worth eating (especially the typical items). The distinguishing attribute is their superb service which is truly excellent. We are regular "locals" that observe a server/wait staff that is loyal to their colleagues and their customers. I really love the fact that the wait staff genuinely listen and engage the diners as if we are family. The longevity of the staff is a testament to the management of the facility too. They must listen to the suggestions of the wait staff regarding the nitty-gritty operation of the restaurant. Their front-line observations are critical to the brand loyalty. Think about it: in a world of competition and high prices, Quality of food AND Service are at least equally important (perhaps more important). It's been almost 2 years since I've moved to Jacksonville and Metro Diner has been consistently my favorite haunt. The location at Ponte Vedra Beach is never too busy to have to wait long for seats, it offers ample parking place, making it the perfect brunch spot on the weekends. Everything! The food had bugs flying on and around our food! The bugs landed in my food! Just Horrible!!! The customer service was NOT great at all! We ordered Shrimp and Grits! The food was cold, The sausage tasted very old freezer burned or something just was not tasting good about it! The manager came over! taking off the food and we offered to pay for the drinks in which the "TEA " was the only thing we enjoyed!!! I waited a long time to get the Shrimp and Grits to be VERY disappointed! This specific Metro location has nearly become a weekly outing for a 3-generation lunch date. Whether she's asleep or not, my Mom and I take my granddaughter out for lunch every time I visit. My mom doesn't like to travel too far out of the comfort of Ponte Vedra Beach. She dislikes driving in heavy traffic so we try to stay close to home for her sake. Each time we come, it almost seems like we have called ahead for the tables right up front, although we haven't. It's a huge coincidence that one of the booths seems to be ready for us upon arrival. The wait staff has ALWAYS been quick and flawless each visit. They are very patient with my mom when she's deciding her order, critiquing her meal, and when paying the bill with new technology. The wait staff has also been quite accommodating with the requests of a doting grandmother trying to satisfy her grand baby while not disturbing the near-by patrons! My mom isn't always satisfied with her meals. Sometimes she complains they are too much food, too messy, too greasy... but personally.... I've never had a bad meal at any of the Metro locations! Idk why people choose to stand on line at that other place. You know the one with the grumpy face when you can have a great meal & not wait for 45 min. at Metro. They serve some great breakfasts & lunch too. I'm always torn whether to get breakfast or lunch. On today's menu they had a special of lemon blueberry pancakes and I'm still sorry I didn't get them not because I didn't enjoy my delicious blackened chicken over salad but because I just know they were gonna be so good. They serve a good salad at a reasonable price & I love their blue cheese dressing. I believe it's homemade. My husband had a special barbecued ribs and he opted for a full rack. It came with a choice of two sides. He chose the macaroni and cheese and the french fries. Metro has a lot of choices for sides. As for service, our server was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. We both really enjoyed our lunch. Have not visited Metro Diner in awhile but thought of going but heading to the Ponte Vedra location. We made the right choice. We were greeted as soon as we got it and seated immediately. Our server was able to get orders fairly quick and we got the food quick as well. The famous chicken and waffles with the hot and maple sauce is always tasty. Chicken is crispy and waffle is delicious. We also had cinnamon roll pancake. This one reminds me of Cinnabon without too much icing like Cinnabon. On 9/1/24, walked up, hostess was very polite and welcomed us. We put our name down for a table for two and were open to inside or outside. She said 10 - 15 mins. So we walked down and grabbed a coffee at foxtail and enjoyed the cold brew. Yumm! Walked back and were called for our table outside. Woohoo I am ready to eat! Sat down and started to devour the menu. Omg so many options for us this morning. About two mins afterwards, a table got sat next to us. A few mins later a server came by to the table next to us and they were greeted and offered drinks. Nobody had acknowledged us yet. Then, another table of two was sat two tables away. The table next to us got their drinks and placed their order for food. Still no one acknowledged us. I got up to ask the hostess if we were assigned a server and she said they work in sections but she will try and find her. I said thank you and walked back to my table. At that point the second table were putting in their order. Now, about 15 mins in, haven't been acknowledged, let alone offered even drinks or water yet. Two other servers passed us and I asked if either of them were our server and they said nope, we will try and find her. Obviously annoyed now, a lady wearing a bright red shirt, blue crocs and a nose ring (should have been our first clue) approaches our table and says "are you ready?" (That was our greeting to the Metro Diner Ponte Vedra) Wait, what? Are we ready? Ready for what? For you to greet us, offer a drink, take our order, cook our own food? Jesus, whatever happened to service 101? I let her know that we have been sitting here for a while without even acknowledgement and she let me know "well as you can see we are busy. Do you want to order?" That's great for you, and not my problem. The two tables after us got sat, received drinks and placed an order. We decided to get up and leave. Obviously, she was not interested in performing the basics of her job today and we were not interested in being served by her. Instead we drove back towards the beaches, stopped by The Boathouse and had an incredible brunch. (Highly recommend) I LOVE Metro Diner, have gone many times, usually sit at the bar and thoroughly enjoy watching the kitchen crew just crush the business. This is my first time to the one in Ponte Vedra and will absolutely recommend to everyone in the Jax beaches area to avoid at all cost. I used to love MD when I lived nearby. Today I came in mid-morning and it wasn't too busy. I was lucky to get seated right away and got my order in. I opted for the fried chicken bennie which sounded delicious at the time, but when I received it, I wasn't impressed and my poached eggs were overcooked. The waitress never came back to make sure things were okay so I just kept picking at the homestyle potatoes and some of the chicken.
