My girlfriend and I ate here on Saturday night and I can't stop talking about how great it was. What was once a dive bar was transformed into a restaurant that could rival anything in Newport or Providence. It was quaint, elegant, and understated, which I appreciated. When we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly hostess and were immediately able to select either two seats at the bar or the one table they had left - not bad considering we didn't have a reservation.
I was immediately struck by their decent selection of craft beer, while my girlfriend was impressed with the wine selection. That said, it was the cocktail list that hooked us. I got the Winter G&T, which was made with Gin infused with cranberry and rosemary in house, mixed with the tonic, bitters, a slice of orange, and a cherry. It light and refreshing, but wintery at the same time.
We had a really hard time deciding what to get, so we settled on 3 appetizers and 1 entree. For apps, we got raw oysters, polenta gnocchi, and potato ricotta agnolotti. For the entree, we split the coriander and mustard-crusted salmon.
Let's start with the appetizers. The raw oysters were a special that night, so I don't quite remember everything that went into them, but the way they were prepared really took the "fishy" taste right out of them. I'm not usually a fan of raw bars (oysters especially) but I couldn't believe how smooth and delicious these were. My girlfriend sucked down the other 4 before I could get to #2, so needless to say she would've gone back for more!
The Soft polenta gnocchi was served in a little skillet-looking contraption with braised veal topped with cheese and rosemary. Everything about this dish was perfect. Later on in the evening, we came to find out that the veal (and braised short ribs that I'll talk about later...) is smoked in-house for 18 hours. It was so succulent and tender that you could basically pull it apart with your fork. The appetizer portion had about 10-11 pieces of gnocchi and enough veal to hold me over until dinner.
There's also not enough I can say about the potato ricotta agnolotti. There were 6 agnolotti served with, again, a wonderfully tender, pull-apart-with-your-fork, house smoked braised short ribs, some red kale, greens, and in a red wine sauce. The agnolotti was, in my opinion, cooked perfectly al-dente. My girlfriend and I were speculating that the softness and freshness had to mean it was hand-rolled, but I can't confirm that. I think it's safe to say we would've been satisfied to stop there.
But alas - we had already ordered the coriander and mustard crusted Salmon, so I guess we had to suffer through it... I'm not a huge fan of mustard, so I appreciated that the lentils, mushrooms, bacon, greens, and sauce evened out the mustard flavor in the Salmon. It was an incredibly well balanced meal. When we ordered, the bartender double-checked that were okay with it being cooked medium rare, which is when I knew we were going to get a perfect piece of fish. It didn't disappoint. It was tender, flavorful, and flaked perfectly with just a fork.
Okay, so that's a ton of food, right? We decided to just "take a look" at the dessert menu. Wrong choice. We ordered the pistachio cheesecake, which wasn't at all what I expected. This "deconstructed" cheesecake was a thin slice of cheese dusted with pistachio, served over a half-moon shaped bed of spiced graham crackers and a beautiful dollop of an apricot-ginger sauce. My tastebuds melted. The couples around us got the creme brulee and chocolate ganache, and none of us left a crumb on our plate. Now, I can't speak for them, but I'd say we were all pleased with our choices.
Overall, 5 stars isn't even enough. The prices and portions were fair, and the food and drinks were exquisite. We left (two hours later...) knowing we'd be back soon. read more
