The smoke is in the meat, right where it should be. Super tender and moist pulled pork, my favorite. I also love the potato salad. They usually run out of pork and beef early so you have to get early, maybe by noon, I have gotten there too late but was able to try a $1 roll up, a link rolled up in white bread. YUM. If you want to eat there, you will have to do so in your car or on a tailgate. This barbecue is in my top 2, Mike Anderson's in Dallas is also in the tied for top two for me. My stars are for service and flavor. I would give it an extra star if they would have seating, at least picnic tables provided. Finding good 'cue in the Dallas area is not the easiest task. Austin, Houston no problem, but for some reason Dallas lacks solid barbecue. So with all the publicity that Meshack's has received in the past couple of years my expectations were high. I pulled into the patch they have reserved for parking. Parking can be a bit tricky when it's busy...a potentially expensive game of Tetrus. Confused at first I stood with the crowd assuming I was in line. After a few approached the window screen after I arrived, it was obvious I was a Meshack's virgin. Placing my order felt like confession...speaking through a small two foot square screen to someone you cannot see. Half pound sliced brisket, half pound sliced sausage, potato salad and beans...I took my place among the scattered 15 others waiting for their order to be called. It's obvious Meshack's has made a name for themselves because people get coming and it took about 15 minutes for my order to be called. Was it worth the wait though? Meshack's is take away only. It would be a nice touch it they added some sort of outside seating...picnic tables, a Wally World plastic set would blend in nicely and really tie the place together. Seriously, it would be nice to have a spot to enjoy the 'cue right from the pit. The brisket is the star of the show! Full of flavor and the perfect amount of smoke, tender and just the right amount of fat. Dallas, we have found the king of brisket. It would have been even better if they served the slices with some more bark. I wish I could say the rest about the others though. I could appreciate the sausage for it's quality; a great texture and juicy, but the flavor just did not agree with me. While waiting for my order, I heard a consistent order of ribs and they seemed to be well reviewed on Yelp...I should have gotten the ribs. Next time. The beans were sweet, delicious with a hint of bacon. Unfortunately the the potato salad, a barbecue staple, fell short. Grity, as if the potatoes were under cooked and the flavor was flat. Finally, the mild sauce was well balanced between sweet and acidic, and a great consistency. For drinks they only serve canned beverages...no tea! I'm sure when I return for brisket and ribs Meshack's will hit a 4 if not a 5 star status, but for this visit it was alright. I'm still thinking about that brisket. read more

I heard Dallas BBQ isn't all that noteworthy. Well, at least there's Meshack's - not the best I've ever had but pretty good overall. You first get to enjoy the parking game which, if it's busy, can be pretty touch and go. There is a very small lot with no outdoor seating, so we took ours to go while narrowly missing our fellow patrons as we navigated out of the lot. I was disappointed in the side choices: I didn't like any of them! Potato salad, beans, meh, I'll pass. I suppose that leaves more room for the star of the show, that being the meat. I got an order of ribs and sliced brisket. I got the last ribs for the next half hour, much to the disappointment of the rest of my family behind me! So be aware, they can and do run out, and quite frankly if they're out of ribs I'd just turn around and go elsewhere. The ribs were the real star of the show. They had a great smokey flavor! Some of the best I've had. They were great with or without sauce - they have a spicy which I didn't care for (at least on the ribs) and a mild sauce, which I really enjoyed. I also had the sliced beef (brisket). Upon first taste I enjoyed it, but the more I ate the less impressed I was, especially as I got a taste of the ribs. Dry - not a ton of flavor - pretty good with the sauce but ultimately it should stand up without the sauce and it doesn't. My MIL got the sausage (since they were out of ribs, thanks to me) and that was pretty darn good as well. Much better than the sliced beef. It came with spicy sauce already on it, which was great with the links. They had a nice crunch and texture, and the spicy sauce was perfect on these bad boys. Overall, dull side selection was overshadowed by some pretty good ribs and links. It's unfortunate they cannot do a better job of logistics for how much meat to smoke as the being out of ribs problem seems to be rampant (and I wouldn't eat here without the ribs) but it is what it is. Some picnic tables would be great - but it is what it is - a rib shack. What can I say, please go and try some of the best OG bbq in Dallas. Insanely cheap prices and the best potato salad in the world! The family that owns this business are so wonderfully nice and welcoming. Get ready to wait though and parking can be difficult but it's all worth it. There is no dine in. It's basically a shack with a walk up and order window. The sauce is my favorite. It's thin but packs that unmistakeable real punch of homemade bbq. The brisket and ribs are great. My Lord! Where do I start! My friend and I finally made it here. We teach so it was our first day we had time to go since its summer break! We arrived at 11:00 and there was already a line. Luckily we still had our iced water from our workout and an umbrella! We waited 30 minutes but we expected that. The young lady taking orders was very polite. We ordered chopped beef and sliced beef sandwiches, potato salad, beans, and orders of sliced beef and ribs. The only thing missing was mac n cheese! But it was delicious! Got my barbecue home yesterday and really enjoyed it. It was pricey and I was surprised that there wasn't separate containers for barbecue sauce. I got a pound of ribs and a pound of brisket and beans and potato salad. $34.00. Potato salad was good but beans were just ok. It took me 15 minutes to get there and we waited 30-45 minutes to get our food in the sun. Was it good? Yes was it worth all the trouble? I don't think so. If I just happen to be in the area at lunch I would stop for a sandwich but I'm not sure I would make special trip again. read more

I came here on a Saturday morning for some ribs and sliced beef. I must say, I should have picked a warmer day. However, it was 100% worth the wait, the BBQ was excellent. The potato salad was great and the beans were fine as well. Here is why I wouldn't give this place 5 stars: No place to sit and you wait outside. I recognize that is part of the charm but I'd prefer an indoor table. I'm not sure how many people were working in there but the wait was rather long after I got my order placed. Again, it was worth it in my opinion. But lots of other places would have had it out in a couple of minutes. Here is was more like 15. I'll add, I waited behind about 7 people in line when I got there at 10:30 in the morning. My total time waiting outside in the cold was probably close to 30 minutes. Here is why it should have gotten 5 stars. The brisket was near perfect. I got a fatty and tender piece that was even good after being microwaved the following day. The ribs were superb, none of them made it to the following day. I also had a hot link roll-up thing that was awesome. A hotlink with BBQ sauce that's rolled up in a flour tortilla. Awesome... One thing I noticed is that most people were ordering about a weeks worth of barbeque when they got to the window. I felt like I was the only person there that simply got a single meal. This place is a shack! With parking on a small gravel road and no seating.. Also be prepared to wait 20mins or so for your order to come out, But it's all worth it when you get your plate of BBQ deliciousness. I got the spicy sliced beef dinner, it came with a side of potato salad and beans (couldn't eat the beans because I didn't realize it had pork in it). First time there today. I'd say these guys have very good BBQ. That said, you really can't compare Meshacks to the top tier Texas craft BBQ joints (Kreutz, Smitty's, Franklin, Pecan Lodge, Lockhart, etc). I'd say they are among the best/better of the tier 2 BBQ spots. Regardless, they are still putting out some really good 'cue. Delicious bbq, top quality meat cooked over pecan wood, no frills (read=take out only, no seating) place run by a really nice, genuine person. We were in town for a family funeral and needed food catered. I was helping my sister-in-law make arrangements. We realized 2 days before the funeral we still hadn't figured out the food situation. Not being familiar with the bbq places I just started calling around various bbq restaurants in the Rowlett/Garland area since that is where my extended family's house is. Ordered 25 lbs of assorted ribs, sausage and chopped beef, and a few trays of baked beans and potato salad. Standouts were the food and the owner. Meat was moist and tender and the smoke flavor really came through. Beans were cooked perfectly and potato salad was very tasty. It had a slight sweetness which was unexpected, but worked well. My entire Texan born and bred family was raving about the food. As for Travis, the owner, he was very accommodating. We placed the order with one day notice. He said he usually closes once food runs out - generally around 3pm. Our event wasn't ending until 4:30 and we wouldn't be able to get to his place to pick up the food until 5. He waited around. We talked a bit as he was getting the food and he was just an all around nice individual who makes killer bbq. Great experience. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a while now and today was the day. I stopped by around 2:30 and there was only 1 other person there. (Score! I've heard how busy they are) Ordered a chopped and sliced beef sandwich. Both had a good amount of meat but the sliced appeared to have the most. Beautiful smoke ring, nice smokey taste that wasn't over powering, easily pulled apart. The BBQ sauce was sweet with a little bit of a twang to it. Which I like! Overall, damn GOOD BBQ. Chopped came on a bun, sliced came on 3 slices of white bread. Never had that before. They are doing it right at Meshack! I will be back to sample more! read more

I do not claim to be a BBQ know it all but for me this was the best BBQ I have had to date. The Brisket was pull apart tender but still had texture. The smoke ring on the brisket was a wonderful site to behold. The ribs were on a plain all their own. They were tender and juicy and mind blowing wonderful. I had all this topped with the spicy sauce and it sent me into BBQ bliss. The beans and the potato salad were both great and home made as well. I had enough food to feed 2 people with just the mixed platter, not that I did of course. For years just has been my family's favorite barbecue jointin all of the Dallas and Fort Worth area. I guess we won't be going back here again now that the portions are small the prices are higher now, and the ribs were dry. This is the first time we've ever had to use the barbecue sauce to moisten the meat. We have never tried the other barbecue places in the area but we will be now.
