New location leaves a lot to be desired. The food is still the same and deserves 5 stars, but the atmosphere really dragged the rating down for me. The place looks brand new and even has a water view, but the vibe is really off. The old location had a very intimate feel. It was darker, smaller and quieter. The new location lost a lot of that charm; it's loud- very, very loud, with the focus more on booze than food. Yes, the old location had a terribly small bar so it's great that they were able to really enlarge the area. But it's now the focal point of the restaurant. When you walk in, the bar area is front and center and the dining areas are on either side, separated by large barn doors. The old place had a fantastic wine list and great happy hour/reverse happy hour but the food was still #1. At the new place, Get Merloaded appears as the unofficial (official?) slogan. As I indicated earlier, the food is still top notch and I hate to lower my rating, but the atmosphere is just a turnoff for me. I thought maybe I'd stick to to-go in the future, but that might be more difficult as well when you consider parking seems a bit more difficult and the stairs. I've been coming to Merlion for a few years with my parents and it's always been a great experience. The menu is very unique and has modern Thai dishes. We tried a number of the appetizers this most recent time, including a few special off-menu appetizers. They did not disappoint! The goat cheese dumplings were amazing, and all of the sauces were absolutely delicious. We even had to ask for more bread so we could soak up the remaining sauces. Our server made the experience even better as he went above and beyond, from our tasty cocktails to dessert and a champagne bottle to take home (for our birthday celebrations), we had a wonderful time and will definitely continue to come back. I'm always excited to hear about their new menu items, as I know they'll be great! Ambience-wise, you can enjoy a more club-like scene in the bar area or have a seat in their fine dining areas for an upscale restaurant feel. Will say the seafood fried rice that includes shrimp, crawfish, and scallops was salty. Couldn't finish it all. Only thing I manage to finish was the scallops and shrimp. Also my friend order chicken fried rice and they said it's salty too. Fish curry wasn't bad though. Restaurant is nice, with decent parking. Waiters were great. Being seated you would not think this place is a Thai restaurant, the ambiance is very classy. We started with the spring rolls and chicken dumplings- NAILED IT! Let me start by saying the food was 5+ stars; however, the service was the absolute worst service I think I've had, ever.... After a glowing recommendation from a friend, we saved trying this place for after the reopening of restaurants so we could enjoy the whole experience!! We also wanted to try something new to celebrate my mans birthday, so Merlion is was... well, the service zapped all excitement the moment we sat down... other than the hostess greeting us the moment we walked in, no one else spoke to us for 20 minutes... yep, 20 minutes without a bartender even looking our way, despite serving guests beside us and making drinks right in front of us... not even a smile, or "I'll be right with you", for 20 minutes!!!! Did I mention we were sitting AT THE BAR!!! It wasn't packed so I know we were seen, we were just completely ignored for 20 minutes... no intro, no menu assistance or "you should try this or that"... NOTHING... so I tired to yelp for what to try etc... Yelp saved me from walking out actually... once someone finally took our drink order, we ordered food without any assistance... we tried the soft spring rolls to start. They were light and delicious and took the edge of HANGRY!! The peanut sauce was just right without being overwhelming.... the main dishes arrived 45 minutes after ordering... seems like a long wait, but the food proved to be worth the wait!! We decided on the signature Raad prick dish with shrimp and it was truly AMAZING!! We also tired the Thai fried rice with chicken and it did not disappoint either!! Like I said the food was amazing and we wanted so badly to have a memorable experience... unfortunately, the service was horrendous, so bad that my 25% tipping self (I manage in the restaurant industry) only tipped the bar staff 10%.... we tipped the other 10% to the hostess who was the only person who greeted us AND she had to come behind the bar to close our check, since there was literally no one to be found to close our check.... we were ready to leave at this point so we found it obvious the hostess deserved the rest of the tip!! So our first choice on this quiet Sunday was closed, despite Yelp and the website specifying it was open (not going to name any names, AHEM). Our out of town friend really had a hankering for Asian food (apparently where she lived in Virginia was devoid of delicious Asian food options), so I pulled up Merlion on my handy dandy Yelp app. We walked into the bar area and it definitely felt a little divey at first, being that the whole establishment was extremely dark and perhaps a little eclectic and handmade - to put it nicely. The price point and Yelp reviews seemed to insinuate that this would perhaps be a nicer restaurant, so I was a tad confused. And well my friends were a little apprehensive with my selection, as they often are . . . and should be. However, the service and food definitely made this experience super duper amazing. Upon scanning the menu, I thought maybe there would be a couple of veganizable options, at best. Turns out, no - the kitchen can modify a few items to include tofu in lieu of the meat and the dish ends up being safely vegan (no fish or oyster sauce!). We started with the Crab & Cream Cheese Rolls and Merlion Soft Spring Rolls (made vegan) and as self-proclaimed spring roll connoisseur, these were actually quite good! The rolls were adequately stuffed and the dipping sauce was quite simple, yet delicious. I opted for the Panang Curry (thick creamy Thai curry prepared with avocado and/or bamboo shoots) as the server's suggestion and holy moly, I was not prepared for how richly fragrant and delectable it ended up being! I don't think I had had avocado in my curry previous to this . . . but man, that should be a thing. Can we all just make it a thing? The only real pitfall of the meal was the undrinkable coffee. My friend ordered a cup to enjoy with our coconut ice cream dessert and she she barely had a sip before she pushed it into the middle our our table. As for the coconut ice cream - it was very evident that it was indeed "homemade," as the coconut milk sort of formed hard crystals throughout the ice cream, but again - holy goodness, it was so rich. Like there's no way in hell that ice cream wasn't extremely calorically dense as a mother. The bill was a tad pricier than I typically pay for similar portions of Thai food, but again, the lovely food and service justified it! read more

We thought that a bit odd since it was early and only a couple tables seemed to be seated. We chose to stay and eat outside but before we could order it looked as though it was going to rain so we decided we would just leave. The waitress then advised we could sit inside. So we moved inside. My husband and I are fans of Thai food and frequent the others in the surrounding area. We had high hopes for this place. However, it was the worst thai food we have eaten on top of being treated as second class citizens. I was surprised by the reviews of good food. The ambience was nice and the location is great. We finished our not so great way over priced food and noticed only a couple of others had come in during our dining experience. Hadn't been to Merlin in years...they used to be in an old home. The home location was charming and unique. The food was fresh and innovative...especially for Seabrook. I was very surprised to see it was a new building. The interior decor is dark and garish. I feel like i was going to a rave with the black lights and dayglow bar scene we had to pass through to get to the dinning area. When we sat down I mentioned to the waiter that it was Happy Hour but she notified me that was Only the bar. I ordered a beer and a couple apps, the Dragon Fire dumpling and chicken satays. The Dragon "fire" dumplings had absolutely no fire and the satays had the most boring peanut sauce I've ever tasted. The Raad Prick was good but "award winning"? My thoughts on Merlion? Someone checked on our table and then lost our reservation, however that happens. After that confusion we were seated and then forgot about. Apparently our table wasn't on any of the servers lists! Finally someone stepped up and she was awesome. But then the food...... nothing to write home about at all! The meat was really tough! We arrived at 8:15pm for an 8:45 reservation and were seated promptly. Unfortunately our two top was right next to an extremely loud and rowdy party of 10. After some cajoling, the hostesses reluctantly agreed to re-seat us albeit not without an additional 20 minute wait. I thought the staff could have handled this better. For one, there were a handful of open tables throughout the restaurant but the staff told us that we could not have these as they were reserved for other parties (frustrating as we had a reservation as well and arrived early). Second, we were not the only party asking to be re-seated. Third, I suspect noise complaints due to large parties are common given that this is a house with low ceilings and there is nowhere for noise to go. Ambience here is interesting. The dining room is very upscale. The small bar area is more akin to a beach bar than a nice restaurant. They were blasting Sugar Ray's Fly as we were leaving. Fortunately, once we were seated, our experience was perfect. Our server was great - she was super knowledgeable about the menu, made some great recommendations, and paced the meal nicely. She told us at the beginning that everything was made from scratch and that we should adjust our expectations on timing accordingly however I found that all of our dishes came out very quickly. For starters, we had the Dragon Fire Dumplings and Por Pia (Thai egg rolls). Both dishes came out hot and were very flavorful. I could have used some rice to eat the rest of the sauce that the dumplings were served in - super tasty! For my main, I had the beef sirloin with their Panang curry at a "3" spiciness and served with white rice. I did not find the dish spicy at all (their scale is 5) but the flavor of the curry was awesome and I really liked the bamboo shoots - very tender. Definitely recommend for Thai food if you are in the Seabrook area. read more

I typically don't frequent Thai restaurants because I haven't found them that appealing. Some friends suggested going to Merlion yesterday and promised I would enjoy it. Enjoying it was an understatement. Everything was incredible. We started with an order of New Zealand Mussels that we're phenomenal, I couldn't stop dipping bread in that mouthwatering cream sauce. My entree was the Kang Keo Waan with Lamb. I opted for a spice level of 3, figured middle of the road was safe. This Thai green curry was out of this world and the spice level was insanely good. My friend got the same curry base with scallops and that was also a great combination. One of my friends is allergic to shellfish and the staff was simply amazing in helping him pick out a dish he would be able to enjoy. He ordered the Pad Med Mammuang with beef. This is one of my favorite local restaurants! The food is unfailingly fresh and delicious. The service is delightful. The owners are friendly and attentive. The drinks are good. Upbeat atmosphere and good crowds. Lively, but you can hear each other speak. And the artwork is amusing and slightly naughty, including the wallpaper! Food was delicious if it had only been what we ordered and it didn't take hours. My husband and I have been faithful patrons despite the service issues, but tonight will be our last visit. Even though they are not particularly family friendly, we brought our family of 4 tonight for the first time and sat outside at 8:45 since we enjoy the food. We brought our own chair for our 2-year old since to my knowledge they have no high chairs. We overlook the club music and the MFs we hear in the music they're playing. This has also been something I have noticed before and have just shrugged. (I see mostly an older clientele exiting the restaurant so wonder if they know their patrons or are tone deaf when I experience this. Pun intended.) We waited 20 mins. to order so placed our appetizer order and decided to put in our dinner order as well since we have come to anticipate long waits at times. We always jokingly say you don't go to Merlion TOO hungry. When our waiter came to check on us 25 mins later, I asked why we hadn't received our appetizer. We had been there 45 mins at this time and still nothing. He assumed we wanted it all at once he said, which was not what I expressed to him. I made it a point to mention when we ordered that we wanted the appetizer and a side of fried rice since we had a little one in order to keep him happy. Fifty minutes after being seated, he brings out our appetizer and no fried rice and no silverware. Instead of correcting that immediately, we then wait another 5 mins. for him to literally dump all of our food off at once with stacks of silverware. He never refilled our drinks. We had to flag someone down for a refill. We then discover, instead of the dish we actually ordered, the Signature Dish, he gave us the Raad Prick. The real nail in the coffin wasn't any of the above since we have actually experienced this at Merlion at least a handful of times and have overlooked it every other time. Wendy, the manager, is the sole reason we will not be returning. Her attitude was contentious rather than accommodating. She came to the table only to tell us that the waiter said we wanted our food all at once and the waiter said we ordered the Raad Prick. They can make us the signature dish (that we ordered) but they're going to have to take the Raad Prick from us. Not what I expect at a restaurant that charges fine dining pricing even though the experience is far from it. When we got home after 11 with half eaten food since we finally decided to throw in the towel, we noticed they added on the bonus of cancelling our reservation on open table after giving us our points. When I called and asked for Wendy, I "accidentally" got hung up on. She informed me that it must have been a hostess that cancelled our reservation. No doubt that was an "accident" as well. Wendy wanted to blame the service industry, but it is squarely on her shoulders. We have never been treated in such a manner by any other manager at the restaurants we frequent. What an amazing spot. The ambiance is upper class, the food is always impeccable. Most importantly the few times that a mistake was mad and I do mean few, they fixed it with a smile. No questions other than how can we make it better. There are very few places that can upgrade from their original location and not get an attitude. The dumplings are always good, the shrimp fried rice is amazing and I highly recommend the basil sea bass. If you don't like spice go easy a 5 is a little heavy. Merlion is not a "traditional" Thai place and it costs a little more than its competition but I recommend you treat yourself at least once. read more

Go for the Bar and the Location, stay for the Bar and the Location! Let me preface this review with the fact that I was at Merlion celebrating my Birthday with another couple, so there were 4 of us. We started at the Bar with a few cocktails and the guys ordered Dirty Martinis. The Martinis were good and the martini glasses were metal...a throwback to the 80s, which we loved! Their wine selection was good and not your standard fare, which we loved! We were seated in the restaurant, which is shut off from the bar to allow for a more quiet atmosphere. We ordered appetizers of Dumplings and Por Pia (thai eggrolls with crab). Both were good, but nothing revolutionary. For entrees, we had the Pad Thai, Shrimp Tempura, Panang Curry with Shrimp and Tempura Soft Shell Crab. All of these items were fine. Our Server - Kaitlin, was also very good and very attentive. Not great, certainly not bad, just fine. After our meal, I was delivered with a cake and a bottle of Andre champagne to take home. It was very sweet and thoughtful. Wow wow wow. My new favorite Thai restaurant in Houston. We were glad to find this hidden gem! Went there with the family and was seated immediately and our server was attentive and super helpful. We decided for appetizers to order dragon fire dumplings and beef satay for the kids. The kids loved the taste and the meat was tender and juicy. Husband and I loved the flavors of the dumpling in the ginger soy sauce. For main course we decided to order the drunken noodles (off menu), chicken panang, and the red snapper raad prick. Tucked away on a quiet side street just off the bay with a nice courtyard patio when the weather is good. Great use of the space, and friendly staff. The wine list is extensive and very fairly priced. Food is out of this world and dinner does not feel at all rushed. Take your time, have a bottle of wine and chat between courses. We both opted for three course means so we could sample from each other. I'm glad we did as I was tempted by the 5 course meal but more than sated by the 3 course. Lamb chop appetizer is nice with cucumber and peanut sauce. The Por Pia - crabmeat egg rolls were great and had a gentle flavor. I'll admit I was a bit envious of the shrimp satay I saw hit the table next to us but I'll have to wait for next time. I had the Raad Prick with ribeye and the curry is AMAZING. Like, "Please take this dish off the table before I embarrass myself licking it clean." Kind of good. The Pad Bai Gapro with the seafood medley was absolutely my favorite. The scallops and shrimp were perfect and the thin oyster sauce was great. Add avocado to both. For that matter, add avocado to everything to everything you do in life and you'll make the world a better place. I dined here last night for a friend's birthday! This restaurant was my friend's choice. When she called and made the reservation she made it for 7 people. When we arrived, we were seated at two 4 top tables and they would not put them together. The reason per the manager Elizabeth, "it puts too much stress on the chef". come again?! what?! Our reservation was for 5 pm. There were empty tables all around us. I asked if we could have the table next to us that was seated together and was told "no. there's a large party there and a large party on the other side of you". No large parties were ever seated while my friends and I were dining. 3 separate couples were seated at the table I originally asked for us to be seated at. This rubbed me the wrong way and left a bad taste in my mouth for poor customer service. The food was alright, but I had to send my order back because it was not made as I had originally ordered it. And it seemed like it took forever for an order of soup and salad to come out. Our server, Kirby, was slow and clumsy at times. I felt this place was way too pretentious for its own good. If I ever do decide to give this establishment another chance, I'll probably just sit at the bar...it did have a nice decor. Response to owner...And, if there was a table available so we could've sat together we would not have mind the move. no one asked us at all. No good deed was done. Your response is totally inappropriate a prime example of poor customer service. I'm a paying customer and entitled to my opinion. My girlfriend loved the shrimp pad Thai, and i enjoyed my soft shell crab raad prick. While the food was fantastic, it was the service that really made our experience at merlion incredible.
