Our first trip for dinner at the Mercantile, the atmosphere is great, but the food was a big disappointment. My wife ordered a steak medium well it showed up at the table rare, with so much seasoning it totally ruined the taste. I ordered the prime rib, it had so much smoke seasoning I couldn't eat it, and the horse radish was terrible. One of the worst dinners we have had. I will say the service was great. read more

I love the ambiance and the steaks are excellent! The drinks are great as well! The service is decent but not exceptional, I feel it's due to not enough staff or new staff. ( For instance, sitting down and ordering and appetizers served with no napkin or utensils) The steaks are Always done to perfection the sides not so much. They are great tasting but we have experienced them either being lukewarm or the potatoes not being cooked enough. ( the fingerlings)This has been every time. If you like a buttery, oaky Chardonnay this isn't your place. This restaurant all around is the best one in Kalispell for steak. Do not waste your time coming here! Let me start by saying we were told by several locals this was one of the top spots so we were super excited to try this place. We eloped in national glaciers then decided to do our dinner here. We went in at 5 and the couldn't accommodate us, totally fine we should have made reservation. Their next available was at 8. We decided to wait around. So we went to the pup around the corner and had an appetizer to hold us over. This is considered fine dining and we had the furthest thing from it. Service was terrible. We were never asked about refills. We had to grab and then hand our own plates to the server who kept going mia which lead us to ask the random servers around us to get us refills. We had filet, ribeye, ny strip and the bison. All the steaks were mediocre at best. The steaks not being up to par is one thing everyone has different taste buds so that's never the issue. When you come into fine dining you expect for service to be spectacular. The service was a complete disgrace! They charged 20% gratuity on our table of 6 and I honestly don't even feel like she deserved $1. I tried contacting them but no one has called me back yet. We went with a large group this weekend, at first they wouldn't seat us until everyone was there (this group was ready to order drinks). We were seated and due to the amount of people we sat at 2 tables next to each other, ok perfect. We had one gal that started to serve us and she was a sweet heart great server but then they separated the tables with 2 servers and our table ended up with a girl that was just rude, slow, forgetful. I order a salad for dinner and she forgot my order while everyone else was eating. Slow to refill drinks, rude when some were asking for a certain whiskey. Honestly, she was just bad at her job for a restaurant that should be more high end. Now to the food, I myself only had the beet salad and it was ok, when asked how other enjoyed their food, it seemed to be unanimous that the food was ok. My personal favorite was the chocolate peanut butter mousse. Browned butter & sage mashed potatoes were phenomenal. Fancy Mac n cheese for my 8 year old- I liked it, he didn't. This is a hard one to rate, but I only ever bother to write reviews for unsatisfactory experiences, so take from that what you will! The service was fantastic, and some of the dishes were good (loved the Brussel sprouts!) but the wagyu steak special that I ordered medium rare was literally black and blue.. completely cold in the center. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she even said that the steaks tended to come out under-done so keep that in mind when ordering. As my boyfriend said when I showed him the picture: "All they did to that cow was punch it in face and then serve it to you!" The fingerling potatoes were also not quite cooked through (but the "loaded" toppings were tasty!) The halibut special was slightly over-cooked, but that's typical for ordering fish in Montana and was otherwise flavorful. The lion's mane mushroom cakes that came with the Halibut were hands down the best thing we were served- 4/5. Also, you order steaks/chops and sides separately and our sides came out 5-10 min after we got the steak and fish so the kitchen should work on its timing. Maybe if they let the steak cook until the sides were ready, it would have actually been done! Decent (but nothing special) wine selection for the area and some super fun cocktails! To sum up, everything was EXTREMELY over-priced for the quality, but it the atmosphere and service was good so still very hard for me to rate. It has some some unique options for Montana (3 stars) but don't have too high expectations for the food (2-3 stars). Grandma and I made the most of it, but I won't be back. read more

Seems like hamachi & foie gras won't mix, but oh em gee. They go together like vanilla ice cream and apple pie. Get it. Hubs got the NY strip with all the sauces on the side. Chimichurri was his favorite. I decided to be adventurous and went in on the Lion's Mane steak... again... umami-central -- if you're feeling adventurous and want something on the lighter side, get it. My 4 stars is because there was no answer when I called 2x. A message indicated making reservations online. My husband & I travel with our small dog and we cannot leave him in the hot car or in a hotel room, so we get takeout when outdoor seating isn't available. I decided to drive to the restaurant and inquire directly. A lovely waitress asked if I had a reservation, I asked if I could order "to go" because I had a dog. She said "Of course!" Made my day!
