Whitefish Fried Whole, Roasted Shallots, Preserved Turnip Greens, Almonds and Chives

Restaurant Review: Bonfire in Woods Bay - A Fiery Love Letter to Montana Flavor Let's talk about Bonfire in Woods Bay, just south of Bigfork, Montana--a rustic-chic culinary hideaway where the Flathead Lake breeze meets fierce kitchen creativity. At the heart of this delicious operation is Chef Derrick Wcislak, a culinary wizard who treats each plate like a love poem to the land, water, and farmers of Montana. Let's just say it upfront: This man's vegetables are having more fun than most people on vacation. Start with the crispy mushrooms--oh, the mushrooms! Drenched in a whiskey and onion glaze that's probably illegal in some states (because it's that addictive), with just-charred green onions and bursts of sweet peas playing backup singers in this symphony of umami. I would fight a bear for another plate. Then came the Roasted Garlic Scapes--which, if you've never had them, are what garlic dreams of becoming when it grows up. Add a rich pancetta vinaigrette, a perfectly jammy soft-boiled egg, and the salty crunch of brown butter breadcrumbs, and suddenly you're contemplating how to quit your job and become a full-time scape enthusiast. And just when we thought things couldn't get more delightfully Montana, Chef Derrick drops the mic with a whole fried Whitefish, caught locally, cooked whole, skin gloriously crispy, meat flaking off like it's showing off. He crowns it with roasted shallots, almonds, and a scattering of fresh chives, and suddenly--you're not just eating dinner, you're being blessed by the lake itself. Chef Derrick's style is one part wizard, one part woodsman, and all heart. He honors the local ingredients while sending them to culinary grad school--his food is wild, warm, and just a little bit wicked in the best way. So here's to Bonfire--come hungry, leave enchanted, and maybe write your own ode to a mushroom. You won't be the first.

Love this spot, drove all the way from Whitefish because a local told us it was worth it. Chef and crew revived this place and I can't recommend it enough. Whitefish dish, crispy mushrooms with shishito peppers and liver mousse was so so good. The bartenders whipped up some great cocktails for us. Allergy friendly, we had some dairy and gluten allergy people in our group and they had various options.

You have to try this! The service is outstanding, the food delicious and it is all locally sourced. We had the bison ribs. It was enough to share

The Buddha Bowl was completely vegan and DELICIOUS. Great live music by Andrew Sweeney. Wonderful ambiance and service. We loved the Bonfire!

The food was very good! We also got the tempura artichoke hearts but I ate them too fast and didn't get a picture. Lol. We went on a busy night and it seems they only have one waiter who is also the bartender. It was very weird. I had ordered a second drink and a meal Togo for my mom but neither of those ever came. But like I said only one guy working his butt off to help everyone, that's bound to happen. I would have tipped better and stayed longer but for those reasons we chose to get the check and leave. Hopefully we'll get to try the dessert next time, I was really excited to try a couple desserts on their menu.

First timer visiting this establishment with my hubs. Everything was fantastic! Food, service, and ambiance! I definitely recommend the Korean fried chicken. It's so good I wish I could be like sponge bob where I could throw it up and eat it again (if you know ya know). The hubs got the southwest burger which was also amazing. The aioli that you can dunk your fries in... my goodness, m garlic loving soul has been touched. Oh and the pumpkin crambule pleased my basic beotch heart Oh and that Anthony bordain quote totally won me over on the menu. My guy! Thanks for the amazing experience bonfire! Whenever we come back, we shall visit Keep on rockin it.

    Deviled eggs

This place is very underrated-- we heard the menu was recently re-done a few months ago, and everything was amazing. The menu is set up as small plates served family style and all the food is locally sourced. We had the deviled eggs, mushrooms, spinach dip, garlic scape, rainbow trout and bison. Everything was so unique and exquisite with great service. We had Mada as our server and she was perfect. I'd describe the food as American combined with middle eastern flavors. The vegetable sides were the best tasting vegetables I've ever had. Since the food is higher quality, there is a higher price, so I wouldn't recommend if you're just looking for bar food. But it's a perfect place for an elevated dining experience and we're so glad we came across this place!!

So glad we did. First of all, the view. The view off the deck of Flathead Lake was beautiful, and it was really cool watching the boats dock and come grab a bite to eat. The service was ok. I think they were understaffed. But no major issues overall. She was really nice. We all got settled in, got our drinks, ordered some apps. I ordered the Blue Corn Chips and Salsa (Our House-Made Roasted Garlic-Tomatillo Salsa and Blue Corn Tortilla Chips). They were fine. Pick another app, if you're trying to decided between a few. For my main, I had the Bison Cowboy Burger (Local Bison Patty, Cheddar, BBQ Sauce & Bacon). All over the part of Montana we were in, bison burgers were everywhere. And thank goodness, because they are delicious. A nice sized patty, smothered in cheese, some fresh veg, and some of the best sweet potato fries I've had at a restaurant in a while. So good. I also got to try the Candied Bacon Bleu Burger (We Turned Bacon into Candy and add Bleu Cheese for one Amazing Burger Combo). Even if the bacon was candied, there was so little of it, you couldn't even tell. But the rest of the burger was aces. A great, tangy bleu sauce on top of a well charred burger patty. Another great burger. Overall, I was very happy with this place. Great location, great food, nice staff, and a view that I will never forget.

My friends that we were staying with were locals, and they recommended A Bar, so we knew we had to try it out. It was a Friday or a Saturday night, and we arrived after nightfall, so we were worried there wouldn't be anywhere to sit, but we miraculously found a nice six top with a great view of the karaoke that was about to start. Looking around, the ambiance was really cool. It had a heavy dive bar vibe. I could perfectly picture Garth Brooks singing in the corner with a rowdy crowd packing the place. A lot of the tables were talking or shouting friendily to one another, showing me that there were a lot of locals and/or regulars there. But also, the place sold merch, as if it were a tourist attraction. A very interesting blend. Service was great. He was just a cool dude that efficiently brought to us everything we ordered. Beer showed up in a hurry, the food came out timely and nice and hot. Very nice fella. As for the food, it was surprisingly very good. Like, the best food we ate the entire time we were in Montana. We opened up with the A Bar Nachos (Corn tortilla chips smothered with melted cheddar, refried beans, taco meat, diced tomatoes, olives, jalapeno, and green onions. Served with salsa and sour cream. Wow! These were good nachos. First of all, they were huge. You can't have small plate of nachos, it's not a good look. Second of all, they were layered beautifully. Not all the toppings were topped on top, they were layered in between layers of chips, leaving no boring bites even towards the end. Third of all, they added beans. Not everyone does that, but everyone should, because it spreads well and they're a great meat substitute. Just amazing nachos. For my main meal of the night, I ordered the Cowboy Burger (1/3 pound Angus Patty, lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheddar, onion rings, and barbecue sauce on a grilled Brioche bun). Also awesome. A huge patty, cooked perfectly, sitting on a bun that was hearty enough to support it, stacked high with crispy onion rings and skewered with a giant steak knife to really set the presentation off right. A little fresh veg, a good amount of sauce, and a literal mountain of tater tots really made this a super satisfying meal. I also got to try the Shrimp Basket (Crispy Breaded shrimp, deep fried and served with French fries, cocktail sauce and lemon). These were nice. Nice, crispy shrimp, crispy tots, nothing was too greasy. A nice way to end the meal. Or so I thought that was the end. At the last second, I saw on their specials board that they had a huckleberry cheesecake. We were on the way out already, so I ordered it to go, and when I got it home, I naturally paired it with some Tillamook huckleberry ice cream and had one of the best nights of my life.

We had drinks flowing all evening long. Good was ridiculous. Probably the best food we had during all of our time in Montana. Cons: Not a con in the world. Tips: They are cash only, so bring cash. If you're interested in nachos, get the nacho app. It is very delicious. If they have a special huckleberry dessert, definitely get it.
