It is directly across from the county building with plenty of street parking. We knew of Schat's from their great reputation in Bishop. This relatively small cafe is exceptional. The options for sandwiches (hot and cold) are endless and clever. We had a tuna melt and a vegetarian option. The honey mustard was a surprise pop in the veggie, but the star is the bread. The service is counter ordered, but the employee took all the time I needed and made great suggestions. They sell every type of bread from honey wheat to their infamous sheepherder's bread, and every loaf can be sliced or whole. We went home with 3 loaves. The sweets were delicious (we chose a lace cookie and chocolate chip). What was the greatest surprise were the prices. Regular sandwiches were $9-$11 with a few large options at $15. These were without exception the best sandwiches we have had for a long time at the most reasonable price. We both agreed we will be back as often as possible.

I came in last weekend and the biscuit with jelly tasted like we never skipped a day together. I got the last one of the day too, so it felt like it was meant to be. By far they have some of the best baked goods any coffee shop has. I always stick to the lattes, they can be a bit sweet so I ask for less sugar when I'm getting a flavored one. I also tried the butterfly lemonade this time and it was a perfect blend of flavor. I love the community feel of the location. Lots of tables inside and plenty of space to sit outside. They also had local art up on the wall, some of the items were already sold - would be great to have some prints on hand. I always buy their stickers at the counter too. Overall, such a gem.

My only requests/suggestions as a returning guest who is broke in a mixed use retirement community waiting for her SSDI and STD.... 1) Offer a discount for refills with same cup/reusable cups; 2) Offer DECAF and HOT WATER at the coffee station???; 3) Offer friendly GUESTS in local hotels (with keys???) a buy (7(?) Get one free) coffee/tea/breakfast deal; 4) Offer maybe a community "P(l)ay It Forward" corkboard for patrons to purchase treats for visitors without cash/cards. 5) Develop relationships with local hotels/motels??? Can't say the same about the refrigerated food ex the sandwiches, pasta salads, and BBQ tofu. I really used to enjoy the BBQ tofu when it was from boontberry in willits. The tofu now is just bland with no salt. Most of the food in that case is like that. Vegetarian food doesn't have to be bland. You can use salt. Wish they would make some changes to the hot bar also. Make people want and enjoy vegetarian food not the opposite. Vegetarian food has come a long way the co op could do much better in that regard.
