The staff are so sweet here. This is a gem of a coffee and ice cream shop in little Boonville. A group of us visited for ice cream and were lucky to bump into staff from next door who shared with us some details about the homemade ice cream (the mint is locally grown in the backyard) which just added to the charm. We were having lunch 2 doors down and saw this place and decided to give it a try since we wanted some ice cream. I ended up getting a sorbet. It was apricot honey. I tried this since it was something different than what I have had. It was nice and tasted exactly like apricots and honey! 1 scoop went a long way. On the inevitable drive back on Hwy 128 from Mendocino to the Bay Area, the timing of Boonville on your itinerary could be problematic if you started with a big breakfast in Mendocino. Jamie W. and I never feel famished enough to make a genuine dining stop in Boonville preferring to move on and have those hairpin turns behind us. Since we tried the Mosswood Market Cafe a couple of years ago, we noticed that Boonville has been booming as a tourist magnet with yuppified eateries lining the road. Even though we weren't that hungry, who doesn't have a little room for ice cream? Paysanne is a compact little shop which looks like a French country gift shop. They serve up various artisan ice cream from Three Twins and Straus Family Creamery in old-fashioned sundae goblets. There were probably a dozen flavors in all which you can sample to your heart's delight. Just ask the young San Francisco couple in front of us who attempted to do just that. It's just ice cream, you entitled morons. I ordered a $3.50 scoop of the Straus Raspberry (see photo), which was just the sweet refresher I needed before heading out on the open road. So take a break from your brakes, sit a spell in a bucolic small town, and lick up a scoop. Don't even pretend "you're not a sweets person", or "you just had a big lunch", or "you're lactose intolerant." I don't wanna hear it. You WILL stop at Paysanne, and it WILL be the highlight of your Boonville odyssey (yes, all 2 blocks of it). First of all, the place is adorable: a tiny little colorful cottage with only naughty sweet things to choose from. Then there's the friendly staff who are relaxed and smiley in a way that only small-town folks can be. And most importantly, there's the ice cream - 8 fancy flavors to choose from like Mocha Difference, Dad's Cardamom, and Milk & Honey. The kind of flavors you'll sample just out of curiosity and then order a triple scoop because you can't decide. Luckily, they'll give you 2 flavors in a "single" cup, which takes a bit of the stress out of choosing. Yes, I stress over ice cream flavors and sometimes other less important things. Truth be told, I was hoping that the ice cream was made on-site, as the shop appears to be all cute and artisanal, and it'd be cool for Boonville to claim a delicious product other than beer. But, the ice cream comes from Three Twins in Petaluma, which you should know is pretty amazing (and still locally-made) stuff. Don't try to walk by. Don't make excuses. Please, don't be a health freak...just this once. You'll thank me for it. read more

I usually don't 5-star a place after one visit, but Paysanne lived up to and exceeded all of my expectations. 3 Twins ice cream is as excellent as everyone says, but that is not Paysanne's only draw. The popsicles are great - my husband tried the coconut and it was packed with coconut flakes. I tried it despite being allergic to coconut, and the toasted coconut goodness was totally worth the temporary itchy tongue. I am annoyingly picky when it comes to baked goods, especially chocolate chip cookies, but I found their cookies to be outstanding. Make room for cookies in your dessert stop, or better yet buy a few for later. Their cookies are thick and chewy, and they use great chocolate in the chocolate chip walnut - enough to make me forget I hate walnuts (they were out of the sea salt chocolate). No complaints here regarding the food or service - the 2 workers behind the counter served and kept track of our big, indecisive group very well. Paysanne! Why must you be a 3.5 hour plane ride and 2-hour drive away?! *sigh* It's probably better for my health that way. read more

Love this place. A MUST stop, even for non-ice cream peeps. They use twin girls ice cream as their base so you know it's delicious. And the cookies! Oh the cookies. One bite of the chocolate chip with walnuts . . . the sea salt chocolate . . . the gingersnaps . . . you'll be in heaven. I think this place stood out in Boonville more than anywhere else we went, maybe because it's actually in our price range! Although our lunch at the Buckhorn was good too. We stopped in and go the butter pecan ice cream, and vanilla ice cream with a slice of lemon tart. This was an amazing combination that I would love to have again! Another super charming place here in Boonville! I love the chalkboard menu and the starry ceiling - super cute. They have coffee drinks and cookies and such, but I made a beeline for the ice cream. This small shop sells ice cream from Three Twins and Strauss! They don't carry a huge selection - on my visit, they had like ten different varieties (I guess for me that's on the smaller end cuz I'm so used to uber long list of flavors at Ici and Bi-Rite lol). They let you sample (and the sampling spoons are real spoons - good!) the flavors - tried the blackberry sorbet, the lemon cookie, and the salted caramel. Mmmm...ended up getting a double, a scoop of the blackberry sorbet and a scoop of the lemon cookie, for $5. Yummers! The spoons and the bowl they used are compostable! And we ate our ice cream on the wooden table/bench right outside of the store. read more

As the name indicates, Boonville is a one-street town. On that one street are empty storefronts, a saloon, wine tasting rooms, a handful of restaurants, and most importantly, Paysanne. Scooping up 3 Twins ice cream and serving homemade lemonade and baked goods, Paysanne is a diminutive shop churning out a bit of gourmet in the middle of Mendocino County. Trust me, a stop for a scoop on a 90 degree day is a fantastic idea. Take your scoop and saunter down the street and check out all that is Boonville. read more

I was thrilled to have stopped into Paysanne after work one day this summer. It's the most adorable ice cream parlor that I've come across and comes highly recommended. I don't even remember what flavors of ice cream I had because I tried so many (all were "out of this world" by the way). This place is a lovely little treat! I wish I could have ordered more, but I absolutely loved what I got. Be prepared, it is a little spendy and the portions are small. They didn't even fill my cup to the top, which was disappointing, since I ordered a small and the drink was so darn good. :( I got an espresso shake--a milkshake with a shot of espresso--which I ordered with double chocolate ice cream. Omg. This milkshake was like sipping a slice of Heaven. I have never tasted anything so good. My daughter ordered a raspberry basil iced tea, which was also just as Heavenly. this place is just okay. i think its really popular because its in the middle of the no where. i was not impressed. the staff were not friendly. and were just doing their job. there were no smiles or customer service. just plain. what can i get you and give it to you. we were surprised to see they had pour over coffee in the middle of no where in this tiny town. so we ordered a cup. don't be fooled. the lady literally put a paper cup on the bottom and just dumped a bunch of water on top. of a hario drip cone. there was no proper slow pouring of the hot water to extract the coffee flavors. she literally "poured over" a cup of water and waited for it to drain. the coffee ended up being super watery and no bueno. i would recommend just getting regular coffee or espresso if you need a pick me up on your drive through the town. ice cream. kinda expensive for this tiny little scoop. they had some unique flavors but they weren't good. i tired the chai and one other but ended up with vanilla. nothing special. read more

Ooooh, I love this place and all their unusual flavors. Such a CUTE place!!! We stopped by here on our way into Mendocino for our honeymoon. It had just been featured in Sunset magazine and we knew we had to go. I got salted caramel ice cream and my husband got either pistachio or perhaps something with cherry - it likely would have been an unusual flavor though. The girls that worked there were adorable and were having lots of fun for having to live in a small town. Kind of reminded me of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. Love this cute little place!! The ice cream is so yummy! I've had a variety of different things from here, but I always end up getting a coffee or chocolate shake with an added shot of espresso blended in! I'm not local, but I'm there every year for the sierra nevada world music festival, and an ice cream (or two) from here during the weekend is a must! I went into Paysanne yesterday and had the BEST cup of coffee I have ever drunk - until today,when I had another one at the same place. I asked Rose, the lovely young woman who works there, what their secret is - and she introduced me to the coffee they use, Black Oak, which is made in Ukaih. Get the Black Oak DUOMO! You need an espresso maker. I bought two bags - but NOTHING is as pleasurable as sitting outside the cafe itself with a cup of that glorious coffee and a scone. This place is a gem!
