Farm-to-table magic on California's North Coast. One of our favorite stops and one we still daydream about was Pennyroyal Farm. The cheeses alone are worth the drive, especially their Laychee which happened to be studded with fresh blueberries when we visited. If you try only one thing, make it the seasonal Laychee. It's unforgettable. We also devoured their ultra creamy deviled eggs, sipped wine, and ordered a cheese board because, honestly, cheese was the only thing on our minds. Boonville sits about 115 miles north of San Francisco, tucked among vineyards, redwoods, and small-town farmland. This whole stretch feels like a little slice of heaven. Stepping onto the property, it reminded me of a European farmstead. What makes Pennyroyal so special is that everything you taste comes directly from this land: goats, sheep, gardens, vineyards, cheese, wine - all feeding into each other on the same 66-acre ecosystem. Nothing is outsourced. They're open daily, and you can grab a table overlooking the vineyards or wander over to meet the animals and the people behind your very happy stomach. The farm tour was a lot of fun and great for the kids. It's roughly 45 minutes but not much walking since the stops are close by each other. Great for kids, even the younger kids won't complain about the walk and the animals are exciting for them. Following the farm tour was the wine and cheese tasting, which was excellent of course. There are many great wineries in this area and the wine was good, but the specialty is on the cheese. The cheese was amazing! They offer a limited food menu (think heavy snacks or appetizers rather than a full meal) and the food was also excellent. Plenty of space for the kids to run around. At my next visit I'm bringing an ice cooler so that we can take cheese to-go for home enjoyment. Overall this is a delightful and kid-friendly wine and cheese tasting and I look forward to my next visit. read more

Pennyroyal Farms is a must visit in Anderson Valley! As the name implies it is a working farm and they offer farm tours and have some farm animals out front. When walking in I was impressed by all the cheese options and grab and go cold case section. In addition, they have a kitchen on site and make some tasty looking fixings. We didn't try any of the food besides some cheese samples but next visit trying the food is a must!  They offer a wine and cheese pairing for $10 each. We opted for just the wine tasting, which included 10 wines and a great variety of whites, rose and reds. The Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir's were my favorites. Honestly, all the wine was really good though!  They have a tasting room bar located inside as well as outside. They have plenty of seating outdoors overlooking the Anderson Valley hills. It's such a beautiful view and very peaceful!  The staff was very warm, welcoming and knowledgeable about the wines and property. I can't wait for a future visit! read more

Loved this place for its beautiful setup, friendly employees, and very affordable tasting with some of the best wines I've had. I'm not a wine connoisseur by any means, still acquiring the acquired taste. But all 10 wines were really nice and palatable to me. The tasting was only $15, so for 10 wines it's an amazing deal. You do have to keep getting up and going inside for the pours but I think it's such a minor inconvenience for the deal that it doesn't even matter. And for only $10 more we got the cheese pairings. This place has tons of ribbons displayed showcasing their expertise in cheese making, particularly their different goat cheeses. You can even see the goats outside the property when you drive up to the winery. I loved the wine here so much that I actually bought a bottle (which was a first for me) and it was pretty affordable. Absolutely loved our tasting experience at Pennyroyal farm! Luckily I happened across this place on instagram while planning a trip to Mendocino. Since I love wineries, goat farms, and it was on the way, we had to make a point to stop in. We booked a reservation for a wine and cheese pairing. They also have farm tours, but sadly none of them lined up with our schedule for the day. Along with our wonderful pairing, we also ordered some other items from the kitchen. The cheeses were all quite delicious and paired nicely with each wine! While they were all goat cheeses, none of them were too strong, so they might even appeal to the goat cheese haters out there. Had we not been on our way out on a vacation, I definitely would've bought some to take home. We also had the deviled eggs and seasonal crostinis, both of which were great and I would order again. Since it is a working farm there were lots of flies, but they had these cool wind contraptions to keep them away, so cool in fact that we ordered some afterwards to have at home and for picnics. I ended up taking home a bottle of a white blend that I look forward to pairing with some goat cheese when I open it! While we didn't get to see the working goats, we were able to visit the retired goats and even got to feed them. We also shopped around their store which had a lot of fun food items and other miscellaneous things. Would absolutely come back here, and do hope to make it back in the future. read more

We had the best time at Pennyroyal Farm! We had reserved our wine and cheese tasting in advance, but probably didn't need to since they weren't very busy on a Sunday afternoon. The (dog friendly) patio was beautiful, with plenty of both covered and uncovered seating. We chose a table in the sun and had a beautiful view of the goats running around in the distance, as well at the rolling hills beyond that. Our host was welcoming and very knowledgeable. The tasting included 5 different wines and 7 different cheeses! He walked us through each one and advised on how to pair them. We were a bit worried because the flies were very attracted to the cheeses, but he brought over a few fly fans which solved the issue! All the wines we tried were fantastic, but the Eye of the Needle was easily my favorite of the bunch. We also got to try the Sauvignon Blanc at the end, which was excellent. The cheeses were equally impressive and I was blown away by the variety. The tasting was only $25/person, which I thought was pretty reasonable. After our tasting, we visited the "Grandma Goats" in the retirement pasture by the parking lot, and got to feed them out of our hands. We had a great time doing the cheese tasting and hanging out with goats! Absolutely do the cheese + wine tasting, it's a great way to relax on the way back home from Mendo. There wasn't many people on the day we went (sunday morning in April). But our cheese person told us that summers can be hot and packed, as well as early fall because of the wine people. There are a few non-cheese items sold at the counter and they are pretty fun! From wool from their sheep to their cheese! It was a good ambiance for sure. Pre-pandemic, Pennyroyal Farm was a regular stop on any trip to Mendocino, CA, via Anderson Valley wine country. This was our first return to the farm in over three years for a sitdown tasting of their phenomenal goat/sheep cheeses and wines. And man, have they not lost their touch on either over the years. And they also now have outstanding Covid-safer protocols dialed in for the safety of their guests and employees. Booking an online reservation for a tasting is easy. We timed our tasting for a late lunch at the tasting room outdoor patio in Boonville. Late-October weather was showing off, so we had a comfortably cool/sunny afternoon with not a cloud in the sky. After checking in on arrival we had the choice of any seats on the patio. They've got high tops and standard tables that are well-spaced throughout the patio, as well as lawn chairs and fire pits scattered about in the nearby grassy field in front of the vineyards. After being welcomed by our host, we were given a menu of various cheese, wines, and combinations. Since it's been so long since our last visit (and because we were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary), we splurged on the "Smorgasboard," a full spread of six Pennyroyal cheeses (soft and hard), charcuterie, assorted pickle-y veggies, membrillo, mustard, and flatbreads. Plus we added deviled eggs. For wine, I had the 2021 Pinot Noir and the husband ordered their 2022 Rosé of Pinot Noir. Don't over-order shame us! It's been three years! Suffice to say, the Smorgasboard was IMPRESSIVE! Our host explained all the cheeses and accompaniments and we went to town. You know how sometimes reality doesn't always live up to the anticipation and build-up we create prior to a moment? There was none of that for this visit to Pennyroyal Farm. It's impossible to tell you what was our favorite. Every cheese found a perfect companion and combination on the board. And my Pinot was a splendid counterpoint of jammy currants and dried fruit against the richness of the goat & sheep cheeses. The hubby also enjoyed his Rosé. And if you need to cleanse your palate between sips, they have a self-serve touchless spring water station on the patio. If I haven't convinced you yet to visit Pennyroyal Farm, I'm afraid nothing will. Which is also fine as it leaves more availability for our next visit! (But seriously, go visit!) read more

If you are planning to visit Anderson Valley, Pennyroyal Farms is a must! My husband and I first visited a year ago and then again a few days ago. It was a wonderful time from the minute we were greeted and throughout our cheese and wine tasting experience. We were so happy to see that Morgan was still there and we were delighted that she was able to be part of our time while we were visiting. Morgan was exceptional at explaining the wines and cheeses. She was cheerful and fun throughout our time there. We loved all of the cheeses and the wine and decided to become members on our first visit. We eagerly await our wine delivery through out the year. I came here with a group of seven as a stop on my bachelorette party and we were all blown away by how wonderful an experience it was. First, a shout out to Bonnie, our tour guide. Bonnie was so friendly, kind, informative, and a joy to be around. She is extremely knowledgeable about so many aspects of the farm and winery, has a deep love for the farm and her work, and her affection for everything around us (the goats, the sunspots, the land) was infectious. We were not the easiest crowd, I know, because we showed up late and were a bit slow-moving, but Bonnie was so incredibly gracious through it all. I would go here just to visit her again because of how kind and welcome she made us all feel. The goats are absolutely wonderful. They love to be pet, love humans, and are so happy. We got lucky and got to see the baby goats that were just born the day before. I cannot overstate how cute and special this part of the tour was. The wine & cheese pairing was likewise excellent. There were some in our group who weren't heavy drinkers, so getting served in the carafes was a huge plus because it allowed everyone to control how much they wanted. We came on a family trip and got to enjoy a nice afternoon here. They gave us a tour to see their sheep, the cows, the dogs. Then saw the great garden area and cheese rooms as well as have our tastings with a great grazing board. We had a blast here. My little was soo excited to be able to come and see the animals and also enjoy some grape juice and snacks. It was a tad expensive. Our trek to Anderson Valley ended at Pennyroyal Farm, where we were hoping to do a goat cheese tasting and wine. Unfortunately we arrived in the later afternoon without a reservation. But we didn't leave empty handed. I was still determined to take home some cheeses. The customer service here is amazing. Even though they were close to closing time, they still gave me a quick rundown of the cheeses they were selling that day. We made it out of there with a tub of goat cheese, which I'm looking forward to including in tomorrow morning's scrambled eggs, and a wheel of chevre and crackers to snack on. Wrapping up a long holiday weekend on the coast, we made a reservation at Pennyroyal Farm for a wine and cheese tasting on a Monday afternoon before heading home. They have plenty of parking and ample outdoor seating. I also loved that they had a small, enclosed area to let your dogs off leash to stretch their legs or use the restroom. They are dog friendly but dogs must remain on leash at your table during your tasting. For $25 each, we got to sample five different wine tastings which were perfectly paired with five different cheeses. They waive the price of your tasting if you purchase six bottles or more. We thoroughly enjoyed the ambience, the wine, and definitely the cheese. They're on site store sells all of their wine, cheeses, and other fun local items. We ended up going home with one bottle of their Chardonnay, one bottle of a white blend, and one bottle of their Pinot Noir. read more

Fantastic cheese tasting experience + tour! I loved that we got up close to all the sheep's and goats that do the hard (and soft) cheese work!! Our tour guide was a tad more interested in the *husbandry* than I think most of our group. But he was still friendly, funny, and knew a ton. We saw one of the owners at work in one of the cheese rooms and also said hello to the chickens and dog on property before finally sitting down on the lovely Pennyroyal patio for a 3 cheese and wine tasting pairing. What a special spot. A friend living in Booneville for the summer took me here in August. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. They have a huge selection of farmstead cheese, bottles of wine, etc. and offer tastings. The prices for everything were incredibly reasonable and we opted to a tasting outside on their patio, overlooking the farm. We opted for the smorgasboard (a steal at $40 something as it fed 3 of us) wine / charcuterie tasting. Not only was it absolutely beautiful, but all of the items on the board, along with the wines were delicious. Our server was super knowledgable and very friendly. We were on our way to a wedding in Fort Bragg, but we easily could have spent hours upon hours at Pennyroyal Farm. This spot is an absolute gem and not to be missed if you're in the area. read more

Came for the farm and the cheese/wine was a plus. The tour began in the garden and then we headed to see the baby goats. We aren't allowed to pet the little ones as they are too young. We got to pet the other goats, and sheep. The tour guide was informative on the goats and sheep, appreciated that. The entire farm and seating area is picturesque. I'm not impressed by this winery. I had high hopes, and was very disappointed. Upon arrival they told us to grab a seat outside and they'd be there to help us. I sat at our table for over 5 minutes before the server finally came to our table and said she'd help us at the bar top. After visiting Goldeneye Winery, this was not the service I was expecting to receive. Tastings were complimentary and cheese wine pairings were $10 per person. Wine was okay, nothing special, glad we didn't have to pay for our tastings. The winery wasn't busy, I'd expect them to walk around and provide better customer service than having to self-serve. I'd say skip this place and check out another winery on the trail. read more

The setting was beautiful - lovely grounds - and practical as there was a heat lamp above each table to keep us warm. The food paired perfectly with the wine and was SO good. Make your dreams of petting the cutest goats come true! We did the farm tour at Pennyroyal Farm which took us through all their enclosures with goats, sheep, and a llama. Their main tasting area allows dogs, but you aren't allowed to take them on the farm tour to avoid any risks with their herd dog. The tour took about 45 minutes and we were walked through the process of how the goat and sheep cheese gets made on-site. It was informative and interesting and I got to pet a lot of different goat friends. They were all so friendly, if you come at the right time they'll have younger babies on site. After the farm tour, we were seated and enjoyed a wine tasting with a cheese plate with their soft, semi-soft, and hard goat cheeses. It was all really good, but my favorite was the Laychee soft goat cheese, it was so creamy and rich. The sauvignon blanc was so bright and crisp, which we enjoyed so much we brought a bottle home. They also had these red wine soaked cherries that were delicious with the cheese and crackers. We were camping at Hendy Woods, but I would have loved to try more of their food if we didn't already have dinner at the campsite.
