The sourdough is delicious. Surprised I hadn't seen Pelican before. It took a friend to recommend I try it.

I got the olive rosemary loaf. Kalamata olives gave it a delicious saltiness and the rosemary wasn't too overpowering. No pictures because I am embarrassed to report I ate it all up. read more

Drool Worthy - can smell the fresh baked blocks away! **CASH/VENMO ONLY! I made the rookie mistake of not having cash on hand. The kind staff held my order for me while I ran up the road to the ATM.** I have seen Pelican bread at a few shops around town, and was curious to see what other breads/pastries they make. Their brick and mortar site is only open Wednesdays from 8am -11am. Came by at 9:15am and there was already a queue out the door and down the sidewalk! I was curious to sample an assortment, and ended up ordering their sesame sourdough loaf, a bag of granola, an almond croissant, cheese croissant and their cinnamon apple roll. Wow. Everything I tried was heaven! Their sourdough has an amazing, just-the-right-amount-of-chewy texture, and the flavor is everything you would crave from a sourdough. Their croissants are flakey and generously seasoned. The almond croissant practically oozed marzipan, which is exactly how I want my almond croissants! I have not yet tried the granola, but it looks crunchy and well balanced in terms of nuts, seeds and clusters. I will definitely be making this my weekly ritual! Pelican makes very nice sourdough bread with a high percentage of whole grain. However, the % of whole grain flour is too high to recreate the texture of a baguette - what they call a baguette is baguette-shaped but not actually a *baguette*. The croissants are also sourdough and made with a high percentage of whole grain. That's tough to pull-off. I'm onboard with the cause and admire the effort but for me it doesn't quite work. Instead of being airy and light, they feel a little hearty and heavy. I can taste a little bit of the sourness which is just not what I want in a croissant. read more

What an amazing gem! They are only open a few hours once a week. I got their right after opening and there was a small line when I got there, a much longer line when I left with my order. I arrived planning to get a butter croissant, but left with that plus a loaf of sourdough, a handpie, and a sandwich. Everything was amazing. This place makes the most delicious bread and pastry I have ever eaten. Amazing. And the sandwiches are very special.

Four out of five? Well, we only tried one loaf of Pelican's bread, the rustic loaf. And in all fairness, from Fort Bragg down to point Arena it was the only real loaf of bread we found -we're not including Safeway bread or weird packaged breads found wrapped tight on grocer's shelves. And sorry for missing any other real loaves out there. So, the "rustic loaf" we bought on Wednesday afternoon at the Fort Bragg Farmers' Market is all we have to go on here. It would have been nice to have had found some bread or even a bagel at Cafe Beaujolais but their mixer was broken, awaiting a new motor. Which, of course, makes me wonder why they didn't just hand mix their bread dough (not the bagels as that's too dry, too tough to knead for most people). But that's the way the cookie crumbles. Yah, so the Pelican's rustic loaf, for which we were unable to find a description, was really good. It seems (still eating it two days later) like a European style sourdough (not really sour but from a natural fermentation), relatively whole and mixed grains -again we couldn't find a description so this part is just guessing. None-the-less, it carries that complexity in flavor of a long fermented dough and holds up well (for days) as a sourdough does. The crumb is well structured with a relatively even distribution of mostly medium sized air pockets. The crust, days later, is not as crisp (obviously) but still carries that rich maillard flavor. With all that said, it seems stingy not to give the Pelican 5 stars but then there is no 4.5 stars, right? And there is a context, such as comparisons to other bakeries like Bouchon or more fittingly in this case Tartine. And granted this is just the opinion one Yelper but there is some room for improvement. This may only be a dream but in this Yelp dream just a little more water and a couple better placed stretches in that rustic loaf dough might bring a bit more sheen to those air pockets and a smidge more complexity in flavor. But yah, I'd buy that rustic loaf again! read more
