I was told to visit this place I went for lunch time which I wish I went for breakfast . The lunch options are super limited I grabbed a pizza slice and it was subpar . However that not why you should go here ! It should totally be for the baked goods ! I snagged a cannoli and it was perfect and the filling was cookies and cream and may be the best cannoli I've had ! The indoor could use some updating and I kinda stood around for 5-10 min before someone directed me or asked me if I needed help with two counters it can be confusing walking in. The girl working the counter on Saturday, July 19th at 2:35 PM had a rude attitude from the moment we walked up. I guess we were the "lucky" ones, because every other staff member seemed friendly. We ordered a red velvet cupcake (easily the best thing we tried) but she put it in the box sideways it seem) a walnut brownie (dry), and a fruit tart (just okay). After every item we ordered, she snapped back with a rude "What?!" as if she couldn't hear us yet somehow managed to suddenly change her tone when it was time for us to tip. We ordered many types of cookies from Schat's for our dessert bar for our wedding. I wish I had photos of them because they were so beautiful. Everything was delicious and everything was eaten either that evening or the next morning with coffee. The food and coffee here is AMAZING. The only thing that sucks is that the service here is usually pretty bad. I've worked in busy service industry settings for many years, so I totally get the difference between "I'm stressed out and just a little short right now" and "I hate people and everything about this job". Not going to single one employee out, but every time I go in, this one particular employee is SO mean, it almost makes me cry. One time they even made fun of my name (made a disgusted face and said "what??!") and rolled their eyes when I told them how to spell it . Every time I try to order a few things, it's like they want me to stop at just one by hurrying up to the payment portion. They make you line up and pass by the pastry cases before you order (what a great marketing plan). Since their sandwiches are freshly made, it can take take some extra time waiting for everyone elses order ahead of you. After 20 minutes, I went to the counter and asked if my order was ready. Not sure what I was expecting. Maybe more availability? I guess ordering online is the way to go and this is the only place for people to get a decent, quickish, breakfast in this tiny town. I just got a pastry after being denied 5 other things, due to selling out. It was a cinnamon tigers tail type twist and it was light but good on a road trip. I felt like I got here early but I guess not. Lattes take a long time to get. I just got an americano and some lady walked out because it took too long, but I was killing time so didn't bother me. Maybe because there was no monkey pull apart bread? Okay I'm a little salty about that one. But I understand this place operates different than those other ones ;) Honestly, there was so much to look at and it was all very cute so I'm glad there was a bit of a line to look at all the adorable pastries. We both ordered a sandwich, and we also ordered a bowl of soup (chicken and rice). The sandwich was small, well, we are big eaters so if you're big eaters you might want to make sure to order the full sandwich. We could tell the ingredients were fresh. They were very tasty and even a non sandwich lover like me thought their sandwich was really tasty. The soup was light and tasted homemade. Their bakery items looked delicious, but we only had time to try their vanilla cupcake. It was good, soft and not overly sweet. A great dessert to round up our short lunch stop. The dining area was nice, they have a bookshelf full of games for the little ones to keep them entertained, though we were late to notice it. We were flabbergasted when we found this place. Our first choice (based on "doing our own research") was closed on the weekend. So we wandered the charming streets of Ukiah to find another option. When we came to Schat's, we had a good feeling about it. Our instincts were spot on! First of all, a pro tip: Don't stand by the bakery case before you place your order! If you linger too long near the cupcakes and tortes, you will be taking something home that you may not have planned for. (Should that happen to you, it won't be terrible, but you may have to confess to My Fitness Pal.) We came for lunch, but if we had arrived for breakfast, we might have simply stayed put for both meals. It was not only our sandwiches (which were delicious and generous) but also the charming staff, and the complete commitment to quality and legacy. The place was founded early in the last century, and is clearly going strong... feeding the downtown workers in the vicinity of the local courthouse, but also visitors who know good food when they taste it. We were here for a brunch and I got their garden breakfast burrito but it was alright (soggy potatoes that seemed to be boiled rather than fried or roasted). Came in for a croissant and the person helping had to ask other people a few times before I got a pesto croissant.
