Couldn't have had a worse experience charged us thousands of dollars and told us our dog was dying...after so many scans, they told us we'd have results in 2 days (took a week) and what do you know, everything was clear. The clinic needs to QUIT using the scare tactics to rip people off and over charge concerned pet owners. We took her to her regular vet and found she just has some allergies. My dog had a medical emergency in the middle of the night. I ended up loading him in the car around 4:30 am and called the emergency vet on my way to let them know we were coming. The phone operator/receptionist was very professional, talking me off of the ledge more than once. She let me know what to expect, walked me through the cost expectations, and made me feel at ease that options would be presented to me. We were the only ones who were there once we arrived, and my dog was taken back immediately. I was presented with the $500 emergency fee. I felt like this was an acceptable fee considering it included needed x rays. It was determined shortly after arrival that my dog was very nauseous but only needed a nausea shot and no further treatment (per x rays coming back clear). They could have tried to get me to pay for his stomach being pumped or watching him for a few days, but they told me he needed the shot only and then we were discharged. Today marks a week after the incident and he is back to normal. I am glad to not have a hefty bill on my shoulders and have my dog here and healthy. The vet is always an obnoxious experience but this was pretty much as good of an experience as I could have asked for. It was clean, organized, and I appreciated the complimentary coffee as well. Something warm to hold was comforting while I was waiting on news of my dog. I appreciated that they kept the doors locked overnight. read more

My poor Boston Terrier Moby had been suffering from an eye injury (corneal ulcer in his right eye) for over three months. We'd seen almost every vet in Memphis and tried every medication there is (at least that's how it felt anyways lol) before we were finally referred to Dr. Jennifer Huey for eye surgery at MVS. Let me just say, I am SO HAPPY WE WERE. The second I got on the phone to schedule his appointment, I felt relieved... like I knew Moby would be in good hands and get the best possible treatment. Dr. Huey was VERY THOROUGH, helpful, and answered ALL OF MY QUESTIONS. She didn't rush and is sure to communicate clearly by using pictures, writing things down, and thoroughly explaining conditions and procedures verbally so no matter your learning style, you'll walk out of there with an understanding of the basics. Moby's surgery was a great success and I'm happy to report he's currently living a much better quality of life. He's happier, he's playing again, and he no longer needs to take eye medication 4x daily or visit the vet twice a week. He's just a healthy, happy boy again all thanks to Dr. Jennifer and her staff. read more

Outrageous fees! Required a $6,000.00 deposit to keep my suffering dog overnight, and charged about $3,200.00 for only a scan and overnight stay with pain meds. Poor communication. Didn't know where else to go. Returned again due to my dog's acute pain attack. The suggested putting him down and in my emotional state, and with his suffering, I agreed. Additional huge charges for this visit. Now, I have doubts about the diagnosis and my regular vet has expressed some doubts about having to put him down. I regret this every day of my life. In fairness, maybe they were right at MVS, but I would never return to this clinic due to cost and my uncertainty about the quality of the diagnosis. I absolutely dread any after hours trips to vets. The only one I've been to is that one on Summer Ave which has been awful each time. I was nervous to even call based on my experience with the other place. These ladies I spoke to on the phone were amazing. They both listened and were compassionate about my situation. They were honest about the care it sounded like I would need and showed that they are trustworthy and truly there to help people and pets. I don't understand why this place has anything but high reviews. I highly recommend this vet. We came as emergency I took my dog here immediately when she started showing signs of a heat stroke (limp, panting, diarrhea) and I rushed right up to the front desk. The receptionists immediately called for a nurse. Within seconds a nurse came through the door and grabbed the pup from my arms and asked a few questions before rushing back. I signed/filled out the paperwork and paid the $500 deposit (which is applied towards the total). We were almost immediately given a room where we waited. We were updated hourly and shown cost estimates as our pup progressed. The costs were about 2x what our vet charges, which is very understandable as it is an ER. We then asked to see our pup and speak with a nurse. The nurse came to the room and was very kind and answered all our questions. We were there for about 3 hours because several high priority emergency dogs came in which required their attention. The clinic was accommodating, communicative, friendly, and cared for our dog well. The payment/billing process was straightforward and they immediately emailed all docs to our normal vet. Each cost estimate had a range so that you understood the incoming bill. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. Please if you have a medical emergency for a pet go somewhere else if you can. It looks like a very nice building but my pet received terrible care here. They ended up delaying her care because they deemed her a non emergency and she had to be put down. They also charged us an original fee and told us they would refund most of the money because our pet did not have much care from them. We were then shocked to learn they had ordered expensive tests, which we had never heard about and would not in fact be returning much of anything. They also tried to refer us somewhere else and when I called the other specialist they told us they had never received my pets records and didn't know who she was even though I was assured multiple times that everything was set up by them. The receptionists at the front were nice but that is about their only redeeming quality. read more

There are not words enough to express the kindness of Dr. Jayne Huey at Memphis Veterinary Specialists. She is not only beautiful, but also compassionate, empathetic and wonderfully gentle and caring. She is thorough and professional, but understands the bond between the animals and their humans. She doesn't mince her words, but knows how to use them to encourage and reassure. Our eleven year old miniature schnauzer is blind. He can't see anything anymore. We were fearful that he was in pain and would need his eyes removed to ease that. She assured us, after careful and intense examination and testing, that he was not in pain and should fare well as long as we do our part with drops and a watchful eye, meaning prolonged signs of pain in any way. My dog went in for an allergies and dermatology analysis resulting in an $1,100.00 bill and a difficult longterm treatment routine. We have experienced 2 emergencies with our pups and each ended up at Memphis Veterinary Specialists. I can't say enough kind words about the staff and vets. We were there today because our pup has not eaten for 3 days due to chemo. Katie and Hanna were at the front desk and knew we would have a minimum of a 2 hour wait. So instead of having us sit there waiting they looked up other veterinarians that we have seen and that could take us sooner. They knew we had other pressing issues to tend to in addition to our pup and took care of it. How selfless and kind is that?!!! read more

I have taken my pets to this place on 2 occasions. One to see the ophthalmologist for my dog who needed eye surgery. They are the only specialty group in town, therefore I had no other options. The vet for that was nice, however had super long waits and a very very expensive surgery and her eyes are still not right. Second occasion, I had an emergency situation with my cat. The front receptionist was nice, however in the back I have several complaints. First of all, they did not listen to the whole situation, the assistant heard one thing and ran with it. She reported to the DVM what she "heard" and they made their assumptions. I do realize that they deal with all kinds of ignorant people who make horrible choices with their pets. I do also realize that being a veterinarian or vet tech is not all that it is cracked up to be. It's not playing with puppies and kitties all day. It is a very hard and sad job, especially in emergency med. So, I will have a little compassion for their lack of compassion and poor job. I was met with an attitude from the assistant and doctor. I would think they would have a little compassion for someone who is losing their pet that they have had for 14 years. They were young and inexperienced maybe she didn't like that I questioned that 80 degrees will cause a heat stroke in a pet. I am sorry but that is just ridiculous, common sense and experience tells me otherwise. I don't care if she got offended by my questioning of that statement. I am an educated person myself who has been around pets my whole life and have been a vet assistant before. The vet did not actually state her name, which again is unprofessional, but she was petite with red hair. Needless to say, I spent $500 upfront (they will not see your pet without paying this) for euthanasia of my already dying (kidney failure) cat and got mistreated by this place and its staff. Way to kick someone when you are already down! I will not be back! That vet ruined it for me! She needs to get out of emergency vet med if she can't handle it! While the veterinary care is adequate (though they did not help my cat at all) their business practices are bordering on fraudulent. An emergency after hours clinic by name they tell you up front their charge is $135 to be seen. Once there they come out and tell you you must pay an up front fee of $500 emergency fee or your pet will be seen when they get to it. They tell you any charges will be taken out of that $500. NOT SO. other charges are added to the bill. BEWARE!!!! read more

These guys took really good care of Eevee when she had to get eye surgery. We actually ended up doing two in one since one issue may have been aggravating the other. To be honest, we wouldn't have ever thought to have surgery for her eye leaking until she started scratching at her eyes. They were able to determine she had some eyelashes poking her in the eye as they grew in the wrong way. They also were able to close her eyes a little so they wouldn't leak as much and possibly be a second reason she was scratching. Everyone here was really cool and helpful and answered all my questions. I would totally take Eevee back if need be but I really hope I don't need to at least for a long while! read more

This review is not for the doctors as I see the dermatologist and she's super nice. They have a receptionist that I've never seen before with purple hair who's extremely rude. I came once and I was minding my own business and listening to her answer the phone and she was so rude to the people. I thought "you work at a vet not in a human hospital why are you so bitter?" Then had to deal with her personally the other day. I talked to someone on the phone before I went and I told my fiancé I bet it's that chick w purple hair because she was so rude on the phone, AND I WAS RIGHT. I know they are busy, it's a holiday, but she could have at least gotten my name when I came to the front desk. That's all it would have take but she didn't and ignored me three times because I didn't have an emergency. So I told her she's rude and not just to me but other people. One of the ladies who helped me told me that purple hair lady recently lost a friend and maybe that's why she's not In Good mood. Overall not happy with this place so far. We took our dog in for a procedure recently. I understand they are adapting to COVID situations but what a pain it was sitting in the parking lot playing phone call with the nurses and the doctor. It was difficult not being able to see the doctor in person to share concerns and ask questions. We are very dissatisfied that our invoice costs went up from what we initially signed in the estimate. We weren't told the cost of the e-collar and the way it was presented to us made it sound like it was free of charge. I said we probably have one at home and the vet said "oh we'll send her home with one just in case." We didn't get any kind of summary report with findings. Only discharge notes. So now our routine vet is wanting to know the findings and we don't have the info. Also there is something that was on the initial estimate that is no longer on the invoice. So we don't know if that item was performed or not. we also are not confident that the correct procedure was done because her healing does not seem to be going accordingly. Really bummed about our experience and wouldn't recommend this place. Would prefer to see the doctor in person and be given opportunity to talk more about our pet. read more

The building and people are nice and granted this is Labor Day but if you like quick service and simple X-rays don't come here. It's a walk-in only place open 24 hours but it's taken us almost 3 hours to get one X-ray of one dogs' foot and there was NO ONE else in the lobby when we arrived. This is the SLOWEST, seemingly most inefficient place to bring a pet. Got here at 11am and now it's 1:45pm and no end in sight. We've seen and heard other people come and go yet we are still here. I could've invented and built an X-ray machine from scratch in the time it has taken this place to do anything. absolutely ridiculous. Took our dog here for his skin condition. They did great and he looked great. On the other hand, when he had another hip issue they wanted so much money cash. Cannot believe after the amount we spent here they have zero payment options. A couple thousand I can understand but in the 5K plus category there should be options. If I could give it zero stars I would. This place is a complete waste of time and money. Brought my dog in on a weekend for breathing concerns because his regular vet was closed. They took him back and the vet came in within 5 minutes of him leaving me and said she wanted to get an X-ray (2 views). This is exactly what I expected would happen so they could make sure there wasn't anything caught in his throat and that his lungs were clear. She said that she would send someone in with an estimate and then they would take him back for the X-rays. The next thing I know a woman came in with their "estimate". It was outrageous. My dog had osteosarcoma in his leg and shoulder and had to have his leg amputated 5 months ago. This "estimate" for 2 X-rays was almost as much as his entire vet bill was for his amputation, overnight stay, and his medications after. After telling them I couldn't afford that amount she left the room, came back and gave me a bill for $145 for the "exam" the vet did that took literally less than 5 minutes. All they did was tell me my dog was breathing kind of fast and needed an X-ray, which I already knew and is why I took him there in the first place. Ended up taking him to his vet after the weekend and his lungs are full of tumors. My vet (Center Hill Animal Clinic) did the X-rays, spent so much extra time with him and me, and gave him two prescriptions and it was less than $200. I would recommend Center Hill Animal Clinic to anyone who asked, they are so kind and truly care about their patients. I wouldn't recommend this Memphis Veterinary Specialists to my worst enemy. They were unfriendly, ridiculously overpriced, and clearly could care less about the patients. read more

There are no words enough to express the kindness, compassion and competence of Dr. Robert Brady at Memphis Veterinary Specialists. I brought my dog to their hospital because he lost his balance and wasn't able to walk. They found out that he had a slipped disc in the middle part of his neck that compressed his spinal cord. Dr. Brady was the surgeon and the one who saved my dog's life. I am very impressed with his competence and professional ethics as a surgeon. He called me daily to update about the condition of my dog after surgery. I will be forever grateful to him. I would also like to thank the nurses and other staffs of Memphis Veterinary Specialists for taking good care of my dog after surgery. They were very professional, competent and provided me an excellent service from the time that my dog was admitted till the time that he was discharged. Thank you, thank you, thank you. read more

If a consult consists of them looking at two X-rays you brought in and the doctor coming in trying to push the most expensive surgery on you and talking to you like you're slow, this is the place for you. The vet at petvax called yesterday and talked with the Doctor here and they were told that I wouldn't be charged an emergency visit fee. I was not told up front when I got there about this fee nor was I ever given an estimate for the visit. I can tell this office is all about the money. For a surgery that was quoted $900 somewhere else, they wanted to charge $1500+. I called and left a voicemail for the office manager who isn't there on Wednesdays so we will see how long it takes for her to get back with me. read more

I had a horribly negative experience with MVS and a result, my cat died long before he should have. My regular vet sent me to the 'experts' because she thought Max had lymphoma. The docs at MVS operated on him removing the mass and sending off tumor tissue for a biopsy. The biopsy was inconclusive so they offered no treatment but recommended sending the tissue to another lab. That lab suggested it was an indolent lymphoma. The surgeon supposedly consulted their veterinary oncologist. Still no advice or treatment. By that point in time, I had already paid over $2,500. A second mass appeared and again I was told that surgery was required. Just one week after that surgery another mass appeared. The surgeon told me there was no way that mass was there the previous week although it was located just a few centimeters from the other. They recommended another biopsy and decided on a needle aspiration. The cat was fine when I took him to their office that day but when he returned he stopped eating and isolated himself to prepare to die. I contacted MVS and was told that they did not do anything to the cat to cause such a rapid decline. Someone from the MVS office called later to check on Max. I told them that he was doing very poorly. That was the last time I ever heard from them. By then, I had already spent about $5,000 there. In a last ditch attempt to save Max, I sought the help of another highly recommended vet, Shannon McGee. Dr. McGee could not believe that after having collected 3 biopsies that indicated Max needed steroids, the vets at MVS had done NOTHING to treat him. Dr. McGee did try a chemo protocol but by then, the lymphoma was not responsive to the medications. That was about 9 months ago. Max died just a few weeks ago. During his treatment at Dr. McGee's office, Max had a great quality of life and surpassed his life expectancy by about 4 months. MVS, with its surgeons and oncologists, had done nothing to help Max other than cutting on him and then collecting their fees. I am certain Max would still be alive if I had never taken him to MVS. You can save yourself and your beloved pet much pain, grief and expense by avoiding the MVS vets at all costs! read more

Our elderly cat took a decided turn for the worst last weekend. I couldn't abide watching him suffer over the weekend. Everyone at Memphis Veterinary Specialists made his transition as easy on all of us as possible. They handled him with such care and compassion that we were able to better deal with the loss of our Max. I really appreciated the step-by-step explanation of what was happening, which enabled us to focus on him. This was not the first pet euthanasia I have experienced, but it was the kindest, by far.
