If you have any class, stay away from this place. One of the worst nightlife experience I ever had. As we were seated, we waited almost 40 min for drinks in a near empty bar. The reason is the staff was drinking themselves and favoring their friends need rather than hosting to the customers. We saw a staff continually going by the dj booth and taking shots. When I ask for my check and expressed my concern, the staff literally tried to go outside and fight me. Even the bouncer was one sided and followed us to the car. The manager did identified with the problem and apologized repeatedly but it seems that he had no control of the place either as none of his staff listened to him. read more

If you are a cafe/lounge/club outside of Manhattan, your should not charge more than $8 per drink period. The hookah was cheap, but the drinks were way too expensive. The ambiance was nice, but the music was the same through out the whole night. I did like the live singer they had, but wanted to hear some hip-hop, top 40s along with Lebanese/ Middle Eastern music. The crowd was okay, some people were dancing and trying to enjoy themselves, but most people were just sitting and smoking hookah and looked dazed and confused. I've been to this hookah lounge numerous times and the hospitality and experience has always been lacking. First off, the owner and his staff are just plain horrible at what they do. There was a time where I came with a friend and we were told to stand by the bar, because tables were for groups only... (Although the place was about 60% empty). There was another occasion where I came with a group of 8... We had 3 hookahs however, half of us did not drink. And we were told if we did not keep ordering drinks we'd have to give up our table. The "rules" of this place are ridiculous. I've never experienced this at any other hookah lounge in the area. The owner sucks and this place clearly is just trying to pull as much money from people as they can. Which quite frankly, there are so many other places on the SAME Block, that are 10x better and treat customers with respect. I went there with 5 people and sat on a table and ordered main dishes for everyone, appetizers, drinks and 6 hookahs and half way through eating, the bald manager walked up to us and asked if we are going to order bottles or not with the worst attitude! When we said no we won't because we are eating and some of us already had wine glasses. The manager then said he will get us the check and need to hurry up as he needed the table. Melody is alright, its very spacious and laid back, when I went a few weeks ago hookah was 10$ which is slightly higher then most places in Astoria. When I got my hookah the hose was really dirty, as if it was rusting ( which is possible ) I told him to give me a new one. But all he did was blow in it and that was about it. Melody is a fun hookah bar with live Arabic music and belly dancers on the weekend. It has a really sexy atmosphere and its one of the only places on Steinway that you can drink and smoke hookah. However, they are kinda shady about what they charge you. Twice I have had issues; the first time was a Sunday night and our bill was $42 and I was going to put it on my credit card. The waitress told us that there was a $50 minimum, so I asked her to bring us some bottles of water to get us to $50. She not only did that, but also increased her gratuity to 25%. When we asked why she said that her boss told her to because it was Sunday and there was live music. I wanted to keep the itemized receipt for proof, but she chased me down after I left the restaurant saying that I could not keep it. The second time I went there on a Thursday night and they added gratuity for a group of 4 people. They also told us that we had to leave before midnight or we would have to pay cover of $10/person... even though we had already been sitting there smoking hookahs and the place was half empty. The atmosphere and the place is really cool, but just be advised when you go here to bring cash, and make sure you take a second look at all charges on your bill. read more

I only went once and the bouncers were actually sweet to my girlfriend and I. It's fun inside I went on a Friday night around 2am. My issue was that they add tip to the bill! We went straight to the bar as soon as we got in and ordered 2 shots. If you're purchasing bottles or you have a large party, I understand why gratuity would be included. I've passed by this place over 100 times and then one night I decided to give it a try. My friend and I decided to have a ladies night out and Melody made it onto the list of stops. After eating and having drinks elsewhere, we stopped in for some cocktails and hookah before we went clubbing in the city. Upon entering, it looks like a really trendy, club like, restaurant lounge and they have a DJ on the weekend. We stopped in because of the "Late Night Happy Hour 6p -4a". A fresh fruit hookah was only $10 and the drinks were $6. They also had shots for $4 and buy 2 get 1 free on the hookah. I was pleased because the brand of hookah they use is my absolute favorite. I'd recommend Melody for a simple girls night out or a small group hang out. The music is ok, the DJ was ok, the hookah was good (but it started dying out quickly), I didn't drink but my friend said that her drink was ok. I also noticed that they serve food here as well. Melody let me experience sexism that I thought no longer existed in the 21 century. I was having a great night, the music and drinks were good, lively vibes. However, I was discriminated against when I decided to use the bathroom to have a bouncer tell me I have to wait and let female customers use the male bathroom before me simply because of my gender while the female bathroom was unoccupied. He then let about other 5 girls go through until I was finally allowed to use the designated bathroom appropriate for my sex. Thanks for this history lesson. Melody, yeah, it was a pretty mediocre experience that I've had here on separate occasions. It's one of the biggest hookah lounges, good space for dancing, they usually have some foo' singing on Saturday nights, lol, which is great entertainment. You know what, now that I think of it...Melody's is alright (just bumped this review from 2 to 3 stars) I remember getting on the dance floor with my cousin and her boyfriend (and we were the only the hispanics that night) and they were doing their Arabic dances and integrated us into the dance, that was pretty neat. Now, the non pleasant experience, cover charge that nobody in our party was notified at the door and received notice of on the bill; being rushed out the table or forced to buy more things in order to keep the table; receiving that $100+ bill for one regular hookah and 4 smoothies... yeah no, we don't play that bump up our bill game...made sure that went straight down to $50ish. I don't remember how the hookah was, obviously not memorable...hmmm *focuses in on memory* Cherry or strawberry? It was good...I do remember one of the girls in our group hassling the hookah man to change our coal and stuff, so it must have been burning out quickly. Smoothie was great, remember drinking that down pretty quickly. Alcoholic beverages are served but never had one so can't comment on that. I have only been there on two occasions, and they were each very different. The first time was very busy and we were seated next to the door which made it very cold. Before even coming in my bf and I were carded and he was full on patted down. The guy at the door was towering over him (at least a good foot or more taller than me) while making a request for some "hot coco" to the other bouncer. It was the funniest thing. The men at the door seem scary, but all they want is some coco and donuts.... Anyways the music was on and the hookah was good. Joe Budden was in the building, but not even his Love and Hip Hop fame could get him any attention. Line to the bathroom was long (one bathroom stall for women, and one for men). I think they could add another one for good measure. The second time we went, it seemed closed and we were the only ones in there. Granted it was like 6pm on a weekday. The DJ was starting to set up by the time we decided to leave. I can say it is a very big space, has good quality music (mostly hip hop, rap, reggeaton). Drinks are fairly priced and good. They have a variety of hookah flavors and the service is not the best when crowded, but they do get busy and granted they may be understaffed so I will not hold it against them. I would recommend it, mainly because I have not experienced such a "unique" and lively vibe anywhere else aside from Washington Heights in similar establishments. read more

I guess i'll start with my first impression of Melody Cafe upon entering.....what seemed to be a middle eastern neighborhood, I expected to see more middle eastern people filling this huge space. Apart from a few huddles of hookah smokin' regulars, there wasnt much goin on...never a good sign. Then again it was a monday night, I give you that Melody. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised. I sat in my quaint little corner, a comfy corner booth laden with pillows. I ordered moroccan tea to drink. I recommend drinking this tea with your meal if you would like an example of simplicity=divinity. Mint steeped in a plain tea. Delicious. My favorite part of this experience. The falafel. Amazing. Though I am italian, I must admit I have a certain affinity for these savory fried treats. I have had them plenty of times, at plenty of places. I must admit that Melody Cafe has given me a reason to drive from Staten Island to Astoria. We ordered a fresh fruit pineapple with peach hookah...and it was eeh I coughed a lot because it was so harsh and the waiters were fixing it but it still wasn't smooth. I asked the owner if we order food, would we be able to be seated. He replied hastily, "no." I then asked if we needed to purchase a bottle in order to be seated and quickly snapped at me saying "don't tell me what to do." This place is a nightmare. Just a couple weeks ago a friend of mine was celebrating his anniversary. When I arrived, I came with six friends at around midnight and we proceeded to hit the bar after congratulating the happy couple. We started dancing and having a good time despite the DJ being subpar. After a couple of hours my six friends and I decided to catch an XL uber and head out so we went to close out our tabs at the bar. Instead of the Bartender giving us our cards, the waiter who was waiting at the table for my friend and his coworkers printed out a bill that included their drinks and food as well as ours. I asked him why he included our drinks on their bill and he proceeded to tell me that we were a part of my friends party. OK. so I asked him, how could he be presenting me with a bill when I only directly dealt with the Bartender and DID NOT in fact sit or use table services, he sulked away and snatched my card out of my hands. Now...here is where it goes even further left field. The waiter returns and brings us all the correct bill. My friends and I tipped the BARTENDER because she is who handled our orders and we left. Once we were outside waiting for our uber, my friend celebrating his anniversary followed us out with his wife. She was shooken up and red faced because the waiter went to the table and began harrasing them about our transaction at the bar. He even went as far as to grab her arm when she started to walk away from the altercation. So. We cancelled our uber. The waiter and the OWNER then comes out with guns blazing. Yelling about people skipping out on their bill. We all kindly showed him our reciepts but for some reason he continued yelling about clearing the bill. Even the bouncer eventually said that it didnt make sense. My two married friends and four of their other guests were still inside. Maybe, just maybe, that is THEIR portion of the bill we were never supposed to be included on???? OK. SO THEN, after all of the yelling about nothing, my married friends decided that they would just settle what was left and leave. We reordered our ubers and continued on with our night. I wasnt even going to write a review until I found out that this place ended up charging the remaining guests for their purchases as well as the ones we had already paid for. Apparently it is policy to literally steal from patrons despite products being paid for already. The owner is trash and a theif. And the workers are theives as well seeing as when we were pulling up in the first place, they were kicking a girl out who left her phone in the bathroom and found it on a bouncer. How is this place still open? The terrible reviews here are on point and sadly are not exaggerating. Melody is like that awful ex you want to keep giving chances to but each and every time, they continue to disappoint you. I'm an Astoria resident of several years and I finally gave up for good on here a year ago. First of all, it is a party atmosphere and they do have decent music. I'll give them that but that's the only thing they have going for them. The customer service here is terrible. I've lived in New York City for nearly a decade and the worst bouncers I've encountered in my time here are at this dump. I can't tell you who or what their names are, but their moods are as volatile as a woman on her period. If you catch them on the wrong night, they won't let you in and will berate you if they feel like it. If you by chance catch them in a good mood, enjoy it because it probably happens twice a year. They're entitled and on a power trip.... it's a hookah lounge in Astoria, get over yourselves. I have to assume management could care less based on the other reviews here so I don't imagine this to ever change. As for their drinks and hookah? Average at best and when you're on a strip that strictly caters to above average hookah, average is nothing to take pride in. Take your business and money elsewhere, there are dozens of other places. Lastly....Astoria is a relatively safe area however some of the violence that has taken place in our neighborhood has happened outside around this lounge (and Crystal). I've been witness to plenty of verbal altercations around here and have fortunately missed the physical altercations (including missing a shooting by 24 hours). I mean let's not forget every place has the right to be selective. The owner is always nice & seems to cater to his guest in his way. I'll never forget how he came & made my dude stand up to move his seat closer to me so we weren't talking to each other across the table. He always says hi to me & greets who ever I'm with. Well, Hookah is not that bad and it lasts well over one hour. Employees are very friendly and helpful. Overall service is ok. I was there last night with a group of friends for two hours and enjoyed the place and the music but the owner is really something..... He does not know anything about customer service..... He tries to suck as much money out of you as possible and he is pretty open about it. During the two hours we were there ( and it was not during their pick hours ) I was approched by him about four times saying that we had to spend more money. And trust me we had already spent two hundred. He made us very uncomfortable. And not only doesn't he make you feel welcomed, but also he makes you feel he is doing you a favor for letting you stay there. As I said earlier, he does NOT know anything about customer service. Me and a friend came here after trying to find a hookah spot on Steinway that actually served alcohol and not fruit smoothies. We came across Melody Cafe and were seated at a table pretty quickly after midnight on a Saturday night. Initially, we told the host or whoever it was that we had 6 people and because they weren't all here, he quickly shoved us to the bar area and told us we had to wait there until everyone else showed up. There were no chairs at the bar area and I didn't feel like standing, so I told the guy that it was just the two of us and he gave us a shitty table right by the front door. Ordered drinks...and they were STRONG. Hookah was $20 for basic flavors and $25 for special flavors. Hookah wasn't bad but the service sucked. Music was good, but towards the end of the night when our friends did show up, we were rudely moved to a table meant for 2-4 people when there was 6 of us. Now being a little older I can see how this is really a spot for youngins. The service is TRASH. I came over the summer which will probably be my last time here honestly.
