Walked in and was immediately asked if I wanted the buffet. I did and when I went up to the buffet table, there was hardly anything left. This was early enough so that there should have been more food available so I took a few items. Then I returned 10 mins later. Nothing had been replenished! So I took a few items again, returned to my table and again, returned to the buffet table. Again, even less available! I asked the waitress who seated me if they'd bring more food out as everything was pretty empty. She said yes. The whole time I was there, the only thing freshly replenished was a pan of green beans and lo Mein. Everything else stayed virtually empty. Needless to say, I won't be back and there was no tip. And I never, ever leave no tip. They deserve a minus rating, in my book. read more

5 stars considering its in Durham. If this place was anywhere else, it would probably earn 3 or 4 stars with me, but considering there are 4 restaurants in Durham and they all suck, this place stands out. I haven't had anything but sushi here so my review is strictly based on the Japanese food. They have some really great sushi rolls. My favorite is the specialty one with asparagus and all sorts of fish and roe on it. The fish here is very fresh and the presentation is also good. Let ,e preface this by saying Mei Wei is decent Chinese food but the service is lacking. This could come from the fact they are one of the only asian cuisine restaurants primarily serving the University of New Hampshire campus which means they have little to no competition. By food alone they would score 3 stars but their lack or quality service drops them a full star. I have experienced there service multiple times both in the form of takeout and dine-in. I recently ordered take out (Oct. 9, 2016) and asked for the total prior to hanging up. The girl working was gracious with the request and asked me to hold (it was clear she had to ring the items up for a total). While on hold, I hear her say "Why does he have to give me a f*cking number instead of telling me what he wants". The item she was referencing was was one of their 18 combination plates (#12 to be specific). Again this was one item in a mid size order ($55) but as a customer it was upsetting to hear and will cause me to drive another 5-10 minutes for slightly better food but significantly better services. read more

I bombed this reservation for poor quality food a while ago and started going to Dover. But they are local so we when back for a second time. We had the best meal possible. Mei Wei is located where the former "China Buffet" used to be. The interior is vastly improved, however the food is severely lacking and the service is sub-par. We tried Mei Wei for lunch and picked out lunch specials. One of us ordered a "Three Roll Lunch", which allows you to choose any 3 from the "Roll and Hand Roll" section of the menu. What they fail to tell you (until you are ordering) is that CERTAIN rolls are not eligible because they cost $1 more! What a joke! One of us ordered a bentobox-ish lunch combination box. All the meals came with Miso soup which came out COLD! The waiter took it away and brought us 3 new ones which were also COLD! Fail. The Bento box was far overpriced for the amount/quality of food, somewhere around $13. The spicy salmon roll was disgusting and had a very fishy taste, not fresh tasting at all. The other rolls (eel and california) were average, nothing special. We complained about the food and the fact that my meal included a soup but we were never provided with a hot cup of soup and they took $6 off the meal. The sushi chef then instructed us that this might not be the best place to try Japanese food. Fail. We are all Japanese food fanatics and this place left us unsatisfied and feeling a bit woozy. The service is quick and the scorpion bowls are definitely a popular item among the college students. It's a nice place to go to if you're craving some Lo Mein noodles. I'm a hard sell for Chinese restaurants outside of traditional Chinatown neighborhoods, and was hesitant to even try this one. It was recommended to me by several reliable friends, and had recently re-opened after major remodeling, ownership change, and a new menu. There is a sushi bar and some Japanese items on the menu, but I will probably choose to have Chinese food here, and have Japanese food in Portsmouth. This is definitely the best Chinese food I've had since my favorite in Boston's Chinatown closed for renovation. It's not truly traditional Chinese, but individual dishes are good, and there's not a whole lot to compare to around these parts. Our meal was quite good, the atmosphere very nice (much, much improved), and was extremely affordable. Had a very good meal there with friends, all were satisfied, and we spent far less than we usually do on a night out (did not have drinks, though). The staff and management check with us frequently as well. We were lucky enough to be in the main room and get a comfy booth, as some of the tables were not as appealing, particularly in the smaller back room. read more

We often get take out from Mei Wei, and I'm generally pretty happy with it. I really like that they now have a "traditional Chinese" menu. But most of their dishes, frankly, are pretty average middle-of-nowhere Chinese. I feel with all of the Chinese UNH students in town, they ought to up their game and offer even more real "Chinatown" like dishes. Maybe some squid. More pork dishes. Their Mapa Tofu, for example, is very bland. But they play an important role as our own Chinese restaurant in Durham, so I don't want to knock them too much. They are trying. read more

This place mostly caters to undergrads but I figured I would still give it a try. The food was mediocre to bad and I had food poisoning after it. There are way better chinese restaurants in the area if you don't mind driving a little further. I recommend Saigon and Tokyo in Dover for great food/service. Overall, I will not be returning and I hope that they improve their food. read more

If I could give it 0 stars I would. We ordered 3 sushi rolls to be delivered which were a little pricey to begin with. However only 2 rolls arrived. We were a little upset by this, so we called to let them know what had happened. The woman on the phone was EXTREMELY rude. She insisted that we had gotten 3 rolls. She then proceeded to make us call our delivery driver to see if it was left behind in the car. After calling the driver, we called the restaurant back and the same woman accused us of lying about our missing roll. She refused to replace our roll or refund us. She continued accusing us of having the roll and she kept insisting that she packaged the rolls herself. We then asked if we could talk to somebody else, and she refused. She then finally hung up on us. Working in the restaurant industry myself, I am appalled that an establishment would treat its customers with such disrespect. I don't think a 2-star rating is best, but the description for the 2-star rating is right on. In fact, when my fiancee and I left the restaurant, that's exactly what we said: "Meh, I've had better." We're not trying to disparage, and we'd like to see this place improve because the decor is awesome and the service was perfect. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. In short, the entire meal was something that I could have gotten from a bag in the frozen food section of Market Basket. This is not necessarily true for the fried Gyoza, which I really liked (oh, and please don't put them on a bed of shredded lettuce - put them on a nice, clean, intact leaf of lettuce. It would look nicer. The shredded lettuce was browning up and it detracted from the presentation). I know how challenging it can be to keep food costs low and meet the needs of a not-so-picky student customer base. However, I would like to urge management to attempt to put its best foot forward. We love eating Americanized Pan-Asian food, but we would probably never come back to Mei Wei more than once to see if it has improved on its more basic dishes. The only suggestion that I could make would be to focus on one type of cuisine. Just a focus. Since they've invested in a sushi bar, I'd say focus on the Japanese food and perhaps open a side business elsewhere for Chinese delivery or take out. The fine decor is suited to the fine type of Japanese food that it offers, but the breadth of the menu must lead to a great deal of confusion and cutting corners (i.e., stocking frozen items or using other shortcuts, which was clearly the case). Less is more in the restaurant industry. Keep your high-selling staples, pitch the rest. As for the food - the fried rice tasted like generic white rice sprinkled with some frozen veggies and soy sauce and then shaken up in a tupperware container after being microwaved. The General's chicken was too uniform to be plausibly made fresh. I had a strong suspicion that it was frozen. We'd love to see this place improve. It wasn't horrendous - but we were not sufficiently convinced to return. The food quality is the weak link and it needs to improve. We wish you the best of luck in improving and we'll be back at least one more time. read more

Extremelly disapointed in my food. Fried rice had no flavor, broccoli was poorly steamed, and the chicken was honestly scary. Do not get the broccoli chicken platter... When I asked the waitress to describe the chicken she was confusing and all I could make out was "one meat". Whatever it was, I couldn't even eat it. I am currently a senior at UNH. Due to the limited off campus food options, Mei Wei is the go-to when it comes to Asian cuisine. I've been here probably 5-6 times and have only had a good meal maybe once. Often times, the food is cold or overlooked. The portions aren't as big as they should be for that price. Often times it takes forever to get your food. We've been driving to Dover since they have so many great Asian places and Mei Wei seems to be getting worse as time goes by. If you decide to eat here, don't get your hopes up. read more

But its not the food that is bad, its the service. The server forgot my order even after I told him about the missing entree and then he decided to give his number to one of my female friends. Lots of variety here. I love the egg rolls here, as well as Szechuan chicken, Wei Fun (Singaporean curry rice noodle dish), Chicken Lo Mein, Hot and Sour soup, chicken fingers, and other stuff. Price is a bit above average, but the flavors are nice and service is excellent. Atmosphere is relaxing and there is some aesthetic appeal to the place, which is unusual for Durham. I will not give this place any stars.... the worst place that I have ever eaten. We arrived on a sat. around 2:30. I wanted to order a drink and was told that there was no bartender. So the waitress said that there were 3 drinks that she knew how to make. The food arrived .... oh I wish that it never had. reheated crab rangoons, sickly tasting teriyaki, chicken dish was not what I expected..... I wish we had refused to pay and just walked out. Since we ate there my companion has been feeling off for a day. Never, ever go back there. We were the only ones in there when the bill was served to us and the waitress was around the corner playing on her phone. We waited a reasonable amount of time for her to return and she did not. I had to call to her twice so she could hear me while she was wearing ear phones. Students, take my word, do not take your parents here to eat unless you want to kill them off. read more
