The most important thing to consider when choosing a restaurant, is the amount of people dining there, so this was the first red flag because it was dead at 5:30. We started out with some sushi and I was actually impressed. Naruto roll was fresh and tasty. Unfortunately that's were it ended. The drinks tasted like the juice was rotten, the spare ribs looked amazing but were super dry, I don't know how you dry out fat but they did it, the beef teriyaki was ok at best, different taste than what you are used too. My Moo shi pork was grey, tasteless, and had a ton of lettuce in it, lettuce who puts lettuce in moo shi? Well anyway my wife got Szechuan spicy chicken, and she said it was microwaved because it was hot in spots but the chicken was cold the rice was hot in the middle but cold on the outside. Overall the waitress was good, the sushi was good, drinks were bad, and food was bad. The Ambiance was lacking. All the pictures are from the good old days. Not recommending to anyone. Wished I could give it less but the waiter said thank you when I was leaving. There is no chicken in any of the battered chicken dishes. I suspect it's the same for any of the other similar dishes. Slow & the food sucks Ordered online & had a 20 min drive. When I got to the restaurant & said I ordered online, the cashier said it'll be another 15 mins because they just received my order. So like, just saw the order? Haven't been in the New England area any longer than a month, but heard the food everywhere (obviously aside from like chain places) were fantastic. Mei Wei has been a favorite of ours forever to stop by when driving through town. I know I am always craving either a nice hot plate of sesame chicken, veggies, and rice or some sushi to fill up my stomach. Though it is in an atmosphere of college students, the waitstaff is always so kind and friendly to us without question. My favorite dish would have to be any selection of their combo platters and occasionally one of their specialty drinks. The drink menu is amazing and there is great variety of drinks to choose from. Mixed drinks, cocktails, beer, shots, sharable sizes. When my kids are with me they love the fish tank. Just note that if you go on a weekend night you will be surrounded by college students and a louder environment. read more

Mei Wei....where do I even start? Mei; That name reminded me of my late wife (May). She was a Vietnamese firecracker from Phuoc Hua, a small village outside of Ho Chi Minh City. She was the light of my life and when I lost her, the world went still, I lost that light. I traveled the world searching for it. I scoured high and low for something to take me back to that time and restore me to my old self. I almost lost faith until I stumbled upon Mei Wei. My granddaughter goes to UNH and she took me and her father there for a dinner date and it was eye opening. The food was delicious, it fueled my imagination and my heart. The Pork Lo Mein was so delectable that it almost brought a tear to my eye. Finally, sushi was to die for and it was definitely the highlight of the meal. Mei Wei gave me something that no other place, thing or person ever had since I lost my dear May. Mei Wei brought my light back. It gets my ultimate endorsement and I am eternally grateful for this small restaurant tucked away in Durham. read more

I felt the counter person was rude from the get go in explaining they were in summer hours. Doesn't make much sense to me then she says we are takeout only. Ordered 6 different rolls and two rolls were jammed into a small box but the other wildly different rolls were jammed into another box. might as well have thrown everything in a bowl and mixed it up. But to be honest my rolls were both very bland despite having multiple ingredients. The rice tasted old and nothing had a fresh taste to it. I don't generally like leaving bad reviews but I paid a lot for the worst sushi I think I have ever had. The wasabi and the ginger even tasted like it was left out and old. read more

Not at all what I expected. I ordered General Tsos chicken and Kung Pao chicken. At first, I wasn't sure which dish was which. Why? Because the Generals chicken had a light sauce and vegetables in it. General Tsos chicken should not have veggies in it. The Kung Pao chicken was horrible. It was dry, deep fried chunks of over spiced chicken, the correct veggies and peanuts but....no sauce. Kung Pao chicken is to be served in a sauce. Mei Wei is doing it wrong. Large portions was our first reaction. We used Door Dash and it came quickly and was warm still. Food was left on our porch and was there probably 5 minutes in really cold weather. So is not having to heat it up was nice. General Tso was not spicy. More sweet. That was disappointing but we got over it. We both got white rice which was neither dry or too wet. Chicken fingers are mostly dough, but it was well cooked so neither of us complained. Boneless spare ribs did not have lots of excess fat. Overall good. Not amazing. Wow. All I can say is don't order from here. Food was horrible, maybe 1/2 portion of similar places and very expensive. I don't ever leave negative reviews but I just had to. General chicken was basically nuggets covered with brown sauce. I counted. 5 pieces of chicken per order. Think McDonald's chicken McNuggets covered in sweet sauce. My favorite Chinese restaurant to go to EVER. I worked here going to school and when I moved away I thought about it all the time until I was again reunited. They're fairly priced, friendly, consistently good food and always a good time when you go. They have a little bit of everything and are definitely the most delicious Asian food in New Hampshire if not New England. Ask for the traditional menu or go with the more Americanized version. The food was...okay. Ordered the general tsos chicken with pork fried rice, and crab Rangoon, and added beef teriyaki to it. Paid extra for that, which is totally fine, understandable. I was a little disappointed to see that the add on was only one teriyaki stick, but I suppose for a $1 add on, I shouldn't have expected much. However, the teriyaki stick was a lot softer than I anticipated, so I'm wondering if it wasn't cooked as much as it could have been, but it seemed fully cooked, and tasted okay. Just okay tho, and I love beef teriyaki. It fell of the stick real easy too, but not in a good way. The crab Rangoon were pretty good. 4 came with it, they're decent size, and had good filings. So out of everything, the Rangoon were good. I've had better elsewhere, but these were good too. The general tsos and pork fries rice were also just...okay. Chicken was good, decent sauce taste and coverage, so no general complaints for the chicken, tho the rice was a bit bland. Not bad, but just. Meh. Got a good sized portion of CHicken and rice, which is good, but the flavor of the rice was just a bit lacking. A little too soft too. The front desk person was nice tho! Quick and simple interaction, but she seemed nice and a good attitude about her, so no complaints about staff. Overall, the food was...okay. Could have been better, and I have had better, so I likely won't order from here again, but I figured it was worth trying at least once since I'm new to the area. read more

We ordered from the "traditional menu." We started with the Cold Spicy Noodles (but ordered without meat to accommodate my veganism). There were certainly spicy, but they were also not cold at all...steaming hot on arrival in fact. I followed with the rice noodles with veggies, which were as comfort-flood bland as the appetizer was spicy. But the vegetables seems very fresh and flavorful. I wish this place had more and more varied vegetarian options! The "traditional menu" had at least 30 listings under poultry, but not a single tofu offering. There were a few offering on the regular menu and I plan to give them a try, but they sound like American-Chinese-Restaurant-boilerplate (mostly). Our table had no condiments, no soy sauce, not even salt and pepper. My dinning partner ordered a chicken dish (which of course I did not taste and can't review), that should have been paired with rice, but the waitress didn't even ask whether she'd like rice with it (we old geezers are used to rice coming with the entree, so it's still nice to have it pointed out when it doesn't). read more

Not sure what happened to this place. We have eaten in and gotten take out a number of times. The food was always really good but it had been quite some time since our last visit. We were in the area last night and some of were in the mood for Chinese and some for sushi so we chose to dine in. The place was dead at 6:00pm on a Friday night which should have been the first clue that things have gone down hill. I ordered one of the dinner combos. It was ice cold almost like the fried rice had come out of the fridge and not warmed well. The beef and broccoli had warm spots and cool spots like a bad microwave job. The crab Rangoons were good though. My husband ordered a mix of sushi and rolls. The server who was white didn't seem to understand exactly what sushi was because one of the Asian women had to come over later to clarify if he wanted sushi or sashimi. Then he didn't even get the sushi!! After we got all the other food we asked were it was and the server seemed confused! The server was sweet and other than her lack of familiarity with the menu, she did well. With plenty of other options in the area including an amazing Thai restaurant, we won't be back again to Mei Wei. read more

Admittedly I'm no expert on Chinese cuisine, nor have I ever been flat out "wowed" by the food here, but what keeps me coming back (aside from living within walking distance!) is the exceptional service. After just 2 take-out visits, the woman whose usually up front (is it Lin? is she owner?) had memorized my cell number and knew me on sight. Pretty impressive. Another occasion, I was surprised to find my go-to credit card wasn't in my wallet... while I was rummaging around for the backup, the same lady said, "It's ok, don't worry. You can come back and pay me tomorrow or next time." I found the card, and while I was on my way to becoming a regular I was still quite touched by the generosity of spirit and willingness to potentially lose $42 tab like that! really classy and kind. Finally, after about 9 months of dropping in fairly often, i was given "special" menu, apparently reserved for the Chinese students who come over from UNH. Whoot!! I felt as though I had earned my own mug at Red Hook or Coat of Arms... Yes, I had definitely arrived. one last note, while there's definitely better sushi in the area, the maki rolls here are pretty solid. always fresh ingredients, decent price, and fairly creative. We're partial to Manhattan roll and Four Seasons roll. read more

Honestly, that lunch special... it can't be beat. 2 rolls and soup for $6.70! That's cheap! The sushi tastes fresh. I usually get a spicy tuna roll and a sweet potato roll, plus the miso soup. Perfect amount of food. The last time I went there, they accidentally gave me a Philly roll instead of my spicy roll. They made me a new 6, were extremely apologetic, and I went home STUFFED. It looks like Matt K. got his panties in a twist over the credit card machine. As a semi-new waitress, I realize it's hard to make everything go smoothly sometimes. A vast improvement over the buffet that was in it's place. They seem to have a good selection of Chinese and a modest selection of Japanese dishes on the menu as well as a sushi bar. We had the Chicken Teriyaki app and the Spring Roll app. Both were satisfactory, particularly the Spring Rolls. I had the Chicken Yaki-Udon. It was as I expected, though it could have used a bit more chicken. My mother had an order of the Pad Thai, which was very respectable. The food came out quickly and was served hot. The prices were reasonable in my opinion, hovering around $9-14. The dining room is a bit unusually set up. There are booths and the bar as you walk in. If you're looking for a regular table they take you around the bar into a small room around the back. It also appears that they have a buffet bar in the back, but I don't know when it's offered up. I'm interested in getting back to try the sushi. When the waitstaff wasn't bringing us food they weren't very attentive though. read more

There is something for everyone on the menu. Since it's located in a college town there is a lot of energy and activity at the small bar. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. read more

There are a lot of great vegan dishes here, notably the cheap-as-hell bucketful of vegetable lo mein and the vegetable bean curd (I ask for mine with rice and general tso's sauce; it makes a huge difference). The drinks are fun and not too pricey. Of course, most people go for the scorpion bowls, but check the menu and there are plenty of other options, all equally alcoholic. The vegetable sushi is also cheap and way better than your average pre-packaged stuff. Only downsides: the service is hit or miss, and sometimes during their lunch rush, they're not very careful with cleaning their kitchen, and I've gotten take out more than once that's had little bits of meat in it, but dinner has always been great. For those who are not familiar with Durham/UNH, Mei Wei is not a bad place... First of all they have a Chinese buffet for lunch each weekday (not sure about weekends). The buffet food is probably a 2/5 stars, but comes with a cheap price tag. Food off the dinner menu is closer to a 3/5 stars. One of the main attractions of Mei Wei are the Scorpion Bowls. Bring a date and get a Scorpion Bowl for two. Load up on a few of these and you will be lucky to find your way home... New signs on the wall read: "Scorpion Bowls are not souvenirs. Those caught stealing will be prosecuted!". So as you polish off that second bowl and the montage of alcohol you just consumed is beginning to hit you, think twice about walking out with a Scorpion Bowl in hand. read more

We only get takeout because the restaurant is usually crowded with college kids. We have ordered many times and the food has generally been very good. A couple times in the past they have screwed up the order by leaving something out but recently it has been better because they have people who can speak english better answering the phone. We have tried Chinese restaurants in nearby towns but Mei Wei seems to be the best around. read more
