Fool me twice...
I used to use Megabus frequently when it was just starting up in my college days. A few years ago the service was generally accommodating, the tickets dirt-cheap, and the buses usually ran on time or as close to it as possible.
Cut to four years later, and every single trip I take is a disaster. Last Christmas our bus broke down on the way to pick us up, and an entire bus load of people spent five hours stranded at the terminal with no updates. Phones started dying, the sun started going down, and about half the people waiting up and left. They later refunded the price of that trip, but that's hardly an adequate apology to an entire post-holiday crowd stranded in the cold for half a day with no information.
A few months later, I decide to try it again. Prices have skyrocketed since the line started; it's usually still a pretty cheap option, but nowhere near the deal that would have made it worth putting up with the constant string of disasters. Buses are always crammed, filthy, late, and most of the time the drivers have no control over the AC or the power plugs, and the WiFi has always been troublesome. So if you feel like shivering in your seat with a dead phone for 6-9 hours, be my guest.
Last night, an 11:30 pm bus showed up at 4:15 am. Everyone received exactly one notice at 11:40 that the bus would be 90-120 minutes late, and they didn't do us the courtesy of another update through the whole night. When the bus finally did roll in, the driver hurried us on. What really got my hackles up, however, was that one passenger had brought two bags, and the bus driver turns to him and says "You can only bring one. You have to leave one of those here."
I understand these lines have their policies and on a fully packed bus, I could maybe understand it. But half the bus load of people had taken cabs to the airport or otherwise gone home. There was plenty of room, but the driver was incredibly rude to this man. While he's standing there as other passengers board, the driver turns to him and curtly says "Decide what you're going to do."
Yes, buses run late. Yes, buses have technical problems. But I can't excuse the level of disrespect in making a passenger wait outdoors for five hours, and then having the nerve to take an aggressive tone in telling him to leave half his belongings on the curb.
If this company cultivates that kind of toxic atmosphere among its employees, why would I want to expose myself to that as a customer? Luckily, I won't have to make that choice again. Virtually nothing could get me to use this company again, or even suggest it to an acquaintance.
P.S. - Still no word of a refund for the passengers, most of whom had to call out of work the next day or ask family to collect them in the late hours of the morning. I get the sense they lost more than customer. read more
