Dining out in the Garden State can be an adventure. Creole and Cajun food isn't as popular as other cuisines, for example, Italian or Chinese food. This style developed from the French-speaking Acadians who were chased out of Canada following the French and Indian War in the 18th century. They settled in Louisiana and adapted their cooking to the local ingredients. Located on Teaneck Road in Teaneck, we were recommended this establishment for their soft opening dinner by our friends. A reservation was made by calling this restaurant. Upon arrival, my partner, our friends, and I managed to find parking shared with other stores. We were excited to try out Creole / Cajun cuisine as first-timers at Medley's Bayou. For some of us, Cajun food usually has a kick to it. Contrary to popular belief, an authentically prepared Cajun dish does not involve eye-watering heat. Greeted by the host at the door, we made our way to a table inside their small, warm, and inviting vibe with a stage for live music. The selective menu features fresh, lively, made-to-order Louisiana-inspired classics. As an appetizer, we decided on Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes and Jumbo Lump Crab Bisque Soup. For our main meal, we opted for the Ribeye Steak with Spanish Rice, Ribeye Steak with Cajun Fries, Stuffed Lobster Tail with Crab, and Lemon & Herb Chicken. Complimentary Teriyaki & Fresh Ginger Wings and Pineapple Cornbread started our meal. Our meal took a while, but we knew it was made fresh: nothing frozen or re-heated. The food was bold and more about the layering of smoky, garlicky, peppery flavors than about heat. I was so looking forward to some beignets and sadly didn't have them, which calls for another visit. The portions were just right, and the price was comparable to the area. Our server was Heather, who was friendly and made sure our glass was filled. Howard, the owner and head chef, welcomed every patron by making small talk. From the moment we walked into Medley's Bayou, we knew we were in for something special. The vibe is vibrant yet intimate, thanks to their live-music stage and wood-grill smoker bringing real Louisiana flair to the menu. I had no idea this restaurant even existed, let alone in Teaneck, NJ! The Food and the Live entertainment is PHOENOMENAL and the restaurant is beautiful. Like seriously the food is that good. I did two ubereats orders from this restaurant. I will say the beignets are too die for, fluffy, chewy, soft, perfect amount of sugar. The crab bisque I was not crazy about, it had an after taste and seems that they put another fish in there as a filler. I really liked the crab cakes but it was small and they forgot my cornbread. Overall, I would give them a 3.5 but I rounded up to 4. I would like to dine in to see if their dine in options are better read more

I attended a baptism dinner here yesterday, and I must say, the owners--a husband and wife--are the nicest and most professional people. The food was beyond amazing. Although I didn't take any pictures, the Rasta pasta, jerk chicken, mac & cheese, rice & peas, and green beans served buffet-style were all delicious. Every single person working there was incredibly helpful, making sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance was very nice and added to the overall enjoyable experience. Went here last night with 4 other friends from my office. Everyone raved about the food. This was one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. Everyone ordered something different and every meal was fabulous. We ordered the wood grilled salmon & crab, sauteed shrimp & crab w/linguini, both lemon herb & jerk chicken and smoked pork ribs. The teriyaki ginger wings were amazing and the lump crab bisque also outstanding - this was similar to New England clam chowder but so much better. As for the cornbread. I used to make this from scratch years ago. I know good cornbread and what they have here is terrific. Also the portions are enormous. No skimping at all here. This place is also a jazz club with live entertainers who are very well known in their fields. If you're into jazz or other forms of music they have coming, you'll know these people. Such events are already being sold out on a regular basis. I'm sorry the other reviewer had a less than perfect experience but it was also a brand new restaurant then. What everyone should know about any new place is that there are kinks that need time to iron out. Had they called this place to tell them, I'm sure they would have made it right immediately. This is no experiment however and it's 3+ months later. I am coming back and we are booking it for an office event. It's simply a wonderful restaurant with a truly great vibe.
