Small dining room with red & white checkered table clothes, oil paintings, Sinatra & NY Yankees memorabilia, and a menu that rarely changes. Like an old school red-sauce joint, tucked away down a side street in a small town, this restaurant never fails. We've been here a few times, with no problem getting a table. Last night we had to put our name in and return an hour later. Assurance, that this place will always be here. Complementary Table-Side Salad done by Joe; who everyone knows. He's been working here as long as the place has been open. Big basket of bread, which is free as well, hits the table before you even order. We had the Zuppa Di Clams over Linguine and Pork Braciole/Red Sauce over Rigatoni. Both excellent and filling. We took an order of Cannoli (2) to go, because we were stuffed Add a glass of Chardonnay and a soda, the bill came to about $100 (with tip). On a random Wednesday evening, my boyfriend and I decided we were in the mood for some classic red sauce Italian. He hadn't been to GP's in over 12 years, but couldn't stop talking about how memorable the food was. I had never been, but now I can say... I totally get the hype. Walking into GP's is like stepping into a warm, nostalgic family memory. The vibe is charmingly old-school: fireplace paintings on the wall, a bar up front filled with locals, and a dining room in the back that feels cozy and intimate. We opted for a quiet table in the back. The meal starts with a complimentary garden salad, tossed tableside by our server, the legendary Papa Joe, who has been working at GP's for 47 years. He mixed their homemade, simple dressing right in front of us and topped it with fresh pepper. Along with warm bread and butter, it was the perfect start. For appetizers, we took Papa Joe's recommendation and ordered the shrimp scampi over the mussels, he was refreshingly honest, mentioning the mussels just weren't in season. I loved that. The scampi didn't disappoint! Four plump jumbo shrimp in a garlicky, buttery sauce perfect for bread-dipping. Solid 9/10. For our entrée, we shared the pork chops with cherry peppers, and at Papa Joe's suggestion, added banana peppers for an extra kick. The dish was hearty, full of flavor, and came with a side of linguine in their signature red sauce. While the pork chop was a tad overcooked, the flavors more than made up for it. (I'd give it a 7.5/10.) My boyfriend loved it so much he finished both plates. Though we were too full for dessert, we wrapped up with a perfectly made cortado, something surprisingly rare to find in the states. Just espresso and milk, no fuss, no foam. What made this night even more special was seeing my boyfriend relive fond memories from over a decade ago. GP's hasn't changed, and that's exactly what makes it magical. Great food, no frills, and the kind of warmth and hospitality you can't fake. We'll absolutely be back--and next time, we're saving room for dessert. read more

Cozy, warm ambience is what I was introduced this last Friday night by a friend. Tucked away on the corner in the middle of a neighborhood, I just found my new favorite spot. Everyone we came into contact with was SOOOO NICE, but Joe and Gabby stole the show for our table. They immediately come to your table with the MOST delicious salad. We both ordered Chicken Scampi over capellini and then couldn't leave without sharing their out of this world Limoncello cake (to die for). It was soft, light, and so full of flavor. We left feeling full, but not that overstuffed "I need to go home and go to bed" feeling. The food was packed with flavor, we weren't rushed, and I'd give this 10/10 I left feeling like family! Recommendation: considering the dining area is on the smaller side, we called ahead for reservations. They also have valet parking since there's minimal parking given their location. The most classic Italian restaurant you can imagine in NJ. Walk past the bustling bar and hopefully they can find you a seat at one of their red and white checkered tablecloths. Our server was a huge, older man who took our orders brisquely, chided me for wanting to eat spaghetti bolognese (who would order just that?!), but everything was good! The baked clams were salty and tasty, the bread was warm, the pasta perfectly cooked in thick red sauce. The tiramisu made a perfect end. We also tried the gelato ice cream covered in a thick chocolate shell - the shell was especially delectable! So happy to have found this neighborhood gem, and hope to visit again the next time we return to NJ. read more

The place is a cute hole in the wall spot. It has classic Italian checkered tablecloth and also a nice small bar. The staff is super friendly. You'll be lucky to get Joe as he is always happy and can provide great recommendations. He's been working there for 40+ years. The food is great and the prices aren't that bad at all. This is Italian-American food. It is NOT Italian. Great place and great service! I would add more beers but otherwise very good. read more

Upon entering GP's Restaurant, we were warmly greeted by the hostess and then our affable waiter Joe. A complimentary salad was mixed and served at our table. I had the eggplant parmigiana and my wife had the sea bass Mediterranean style. Both meals were incredible, bursting with flavor. Might be one of the best Italian restaurants I have been to. Super nice and seated in back room. Joe our server was phenomenal! Started off with bread and salad. Salad simple but the vinaigrette was perfect. Bread was great a little bland but crunchy. Split the half order of meatballs. They were amazing. Perfect sauce. I had the special chicken with prosciutto and mozzarella stuffed and side pasta. Cooked to perfection. My buddy had the chicken cacciatore. He said it was great. A bottle of Chianti ( too warm) need a few ice cubes. All in all a wonderful place. The service made all the difference in the world. They really treated us like family. Just loved this place. what a disappointment this place is. I order from here several times a month and they just lost a customer food was delivered on sunday missing half my order and cold. I called restaurant to let them know and expected a refund or credit. instead they blamed Grubhub delivery person for stealing my food and the reason it was cold. I didn't realize the delivery person packaged my food and confirmed everything was in bag. they refused to credit or refund my order after spending $50 a one heal. unacceptable customer service and you just lost a loyal customer. good jog GPs read more

This place has gone downhill food and service wise. The last time I came the food was mediocre. I came again the night of December 14th with a reservation for two people at 6:30. They refused to honor my reservation once I arrived because they had a much larger party coming at 7:00. I was told "it's the holiday season you should not expect a reservation to be honored". The people who run this restaurant should be ashamed of themselves. If you have a reservation here know that it may not be honored. read more

I came here for an early birthday dinner with my best friend as she highly recommended it and it didn't disappoint. I've also been to the JC location but as the "original" GPs, it was the better experience so it deserved some Yelp love. They offer free valet parking, which is always helpful around this area. The place has such a warm, homey feel to it. Very different from the modern, updated look in JC. They start you off with a nice salad and bread. You really can't go wrong with what you order but I have to say my favorite dish on the menu is the -Shrimp Parm-- I absolutely love it. I've tried this dish in other places and it just doesn't compare. This dish + a glass of Riesling = delicious combo. GPs is my go to place when I'm in the mood for Italian. read more

I haven't been to GP's for a few years yet Joseph the waiter remembered me. The valet was a funny nice guy! I visited with two friends on Sat night. The food is still amazing and the wait staff is friendly and does a wonderful job. The bread and the shared salad is still worth the visit by itself! We ordered to share: Stuffed mushrooms and the famous delicious meatballs. Our individual meals were: Veal with arugula salad Gnocchi Bolognese Shrimp Fra Diablo Which we all brought home because of the large portions. We waited too long to order dessert so the Limoncello cake was no more. However we ordered cheesecake with caramel and chocolate sauce. What a fabulous night at a fabulous restaurant! After walking by this place numerous times over the last two years, my boyfriend and I finally decided to check it out and the only thing I am disappointed about is that it took us this long to do so! After walking in the front door I noticed a nice full serviced bar. Customers are also welcomed to eat here as well. If you are searching for one of those old school Italian places that only seem to be seen and exist in movies...the wait it over because this is it. After being seated, we were brought warm bread and a fresh complimentary salad. The salad came in a nice sized bowl and was perfect for two. I personally would go back for the salad alone!!!! As an appetizer we decided to start with the clams oreganata which were definitely delicious. As an entree, I ordered the chicken with mushrooms and wine sauce over linguini which was just out of this world. My boyfriend decided to get a chicken and broccoli in a lemon sauce which he savory and enjoyed every single bite. As stuffed as we were, we couldn't pass on dessert! We ended our lovely dinner with a tiramisu which to no surprise was also amazing. The service there was also great throughout the entire dinner.
