Oyster poor boy with fried potatoes
    Katie A.

Really helpful service. Had the oyster poor boy, and it was absolutely stunning. It came with fried potatoes, which were actually chunks of potatoes, and it was delicious. BF and I got the same thing... And split a beer. They had a nice selection of draft beer. The poor boy oyster sandwich was $21.

They make some great sandwiches here. We got a double DAMBurger. It was very good. Not a lot of seating, but we were able to get some bar stone at the counter which were fine. We weren't big fans of the potato's:/fries. They were so salty. All staff were very nice. Next time I come back I will try the MEAN sandwich. It looked very good.

When we arrived there was a long line and lots of people waiting. We weren't sure how long the wait was, but it seemed like things were moving pretty good. Its fairly clean and efficient. The reviews were really good so we decided to give it a try. You order at the counter and find a seat or take it to go. Be careful of add ons or asking for things to be put on the side as they do charge extra for that. You can also order online and pick up as well if you don't want to jockey for a seat. On a nice day they also have seating outside in the back. We ordered the Wedge Salad and The Mean Sandwich. The sandwich comes with potato skins too. I love potato skins so I was excited to try those. They are pretty quick with getting you order out. Generally about 15 minutes for your order to come out. The Mean Sandwich is great! It has a savory, sweet, and sour quality that is perfect. The balance of flavors make the experience very enjoyable. The potato skins are perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. Little nuggets of goodness. The Wedge Salad was really good as well. Lots of bacon bits and just the right amount of cheese and dressing. Some places drown it in dressing but this was just right. The staff is super nice and hard working. They would clean the tables regularly and make sure everyone was doing well. This place should be a case study on efficiency, service, and good food. I live on the eastside but I would make the trek over to Ballard for this!

What a great meal! The humorous exterior has long intrigued me when driving by on the bus. The friendly greeting from the cashier was welcoming and our interaction was lighthearted and fun. Loved his insights as to the variety of dipping sauces as well. The place is spotless; one of the team members walked through constantly, cleaning the counters and asking patrons if their meals were satisfactory. The owner also came out to have a word and discuss the sandwich ingredients. This is always such a welcome touch, not usually found in a casual restaurant. It really shows how dedicated they are to the product and the experience. I ordered their signature sandwich- the Mean. Absolutely fantastic. Thick chunks of corned beef, pickled cabbage, generous bunch of mint and a home made mustard (made with horseradish?) - every bite was a burst of flavor. Fresh mint was a genius pairing. The salt and pepper fries (half a pound!) were phenomenal. Crispy bits and huge chunks of potatoes all perfectly cooked and well seasoned. To have both sizes so well cooked is sorcery. The dipping sauces (lemon mayo and a spicy remoulade) were the perfect accompaniment. Believe the hype on this sandwich place. I can't wait to come back and try some of their other options!

I was in a rush and mapped the closest sandwich shop while on a job. I ended up at this unique spot and although it was pricier than I planned it was worth it. Everything is well thought of, and completely opposite of the boring corporate sandwiches I'm usually stuck with. I was warmly welcomed by staff and they were helpful. Great ambiance I got the falafel sandwich which was yummy but wish I would have gotten meat. The potato skins were a yummy change of pace from fries as well.

I waited a long time to try this, coming all the way from Lakewood. Now there's no burger place like this, or I mean a sandwich shop like this. It truly delivered what I was looking for and gave me a great sense of awe. My wife ordered the d.a.m original--it's the dry-aged beer Smashburger--and I got the fish sandwich--the best, made with Spanish sardines.

Walked here from a brewery nearby. Small divey kind of place with some stall seating indoors and covered wooden picnic table seating in the back with a random ping pong table. Our group ordered the MEAN, the fried chicken sandwich, and the falafel burger sandwich. Prices are quite high, but I guess it's because they have to pay rent in Seattle and the cost of the sandwich includes the fresh hand-cut fries, but still - ouch! About $20/sandwich... better be good! Also, sauces/dips other than ketchup are an extra cost. T_T One guy in our party doesn't eat pork and asked about it and the cashier explained that they use the same fryer for everything, so he could not promise no cross-contamination. He was nice about it but it was funny how much bigger a deal he was making of it than my friend was. Anyways, you order at the counter, they hand you a cute table number on top of different toy cars. We sat out in the back and played ping pong until they brought out the sandwiches. I honestly loved my sandwich. It was a good size and full of flavor. The fried chicken sandwiches looked huge and filling. The MEAN sandwich was brisket and we found that meant corned beef brisket. Husband thought it tasted fine but was disappointed in how little meat there was compared to everyone else's sandwiches. Lots of veggies though. Everyone loved the fries. Super crispy and flavorful. However, it would have been nice if we could have ordered the sandwich without the fries at a lower price and just had the option of ordering fries if someone wanted it. So, nice that we got to try this place. Flavorful, fresh, but way too expensive for us to make an effort to come back again. At this price point, we can go somewhere a little fancier.

I split the jersey sandwich with one of my boys. The quality was superb and the sandwich was huge! Loved the "fries." We got some extra sauces on the side - white sauce and buffalo sauce. Fresh and delicious!

We've been here many times and love it, especially the Mean, thick cut corned beef with red cabbage slaw and mint! We've learned to share it because it comes with a ton of fries! But this time the slaw and mint were mostly on one half of the sandwich, because the second half of my half had no slaw or mint. And the corned beef was crisp/hard on one side. Disappointing.

Excellent but expensive sandwiches! It's a small, unassuming spot with relaxed vibes (though they've won some serious awards!) and very friendly service. The menu isn't huge, so I would make sure to check online beforehand if you have any dietary restrictions. The WTK (fried chicken po'boy) was AMAZING. The chicken was juicy with a light amount of breading that didn't overwhelm the rest of the sandwich. The Calabrian chili relish and lemon-pepper mayo added a pleasant zing. Bread was fine but not anything special. Overall a 9/10 sandwich. While I loved their "skins n ins," it would be nice to have the option to purchase just the sandwich for a cheaper price.

The Fish Sando - yum!!! I want 3 more to go. Ha.

Omg. My daughter sent me here, we are foodies and she knew that I would love it. I got The Fish sandwich, it was so flavorful and deliciously balanced. Sweet, tart, umami, crunchy and soft, all at the same time. The sardines were luscious and unctuous, with a deeply satisfying mouthfeel - perfectly cooked and super fresh. The bun was thin and fresh, it complemented the sandwich perfectly and held it well. The black pepper aioli was a great addition. Bravo, Skyler!!

A fun exaggerated sandwich place in frelard. We dropped in on a Sunday for lunch and were greeted with friendly service. They helped his pick out a sandwich and sides, we went with the Jersey shore and grabbed a seat at the counter looking out. Food came out hot and fresh. The potato skins and ins were tasty and went well with the jalapeño ranch. The wedge salad had all the right elements but was way over dressed burying a lot of the flavor, I'd ask for the dressing on the side next time. In general food was tasty but oversalted. I'd go back and try a few more things to see if that's a consistent problem because it was a fun and friendly place

Another after-farmers market meal, this time at Mean Sandwich, a counter service sandwich and burger shop. This was for Sunday lunch and it wasn't too crowded at all, although a couple more customers came in while we were eating. They actually have quite a large space - a bunch of indoor seating as well as outdoor seating in the back. We were deciding between The Mean, WTF and D.A.M Burger, and the cashier managed to convince us to go with the former two. The Mean ($19) - I'm usually hesitant to order corned beef sandwiches - I'm used to the staggeringly salty, thinly shaved gigantic beast-sized sandwiches of the Midwest that are completely unwieldy to eat and just way too salty for my tastes. The cashier heartily recommended this sandwich, and I decided to give it a try in spite of my misgivings. Man I am happy I ordered this. Firstly, they use larger chunks of corned beef rather than thin slices. This makes it so each bite is more cohesive and allows them to control the spice levels much better - with these being perfectly not too salty. They top it with a thick layer of pickled red cabbage - it adds nice crunch and is tangy, but not too much. Above that is a thick layer of fresh mint. When I read the menu, I thought it would be just a leaf or two but they really pile it on. And above that is a layer of mustard. The flavors really do work well together and everything melds into a super delicious bite. I found the bun to be a bit strange though - nothing wrong with quality, but they add so much to the sandwich that it compresses the interior of the bun until it shrinks enough to almost resemble pita bread! Strange, but it works well! (5/5) WTK? ($19) - I found this sandwich to be a little weaker than The Mean. It starts with a toasted Vietnamese-style baguette, complete with crackly thin crust. Inside, they slather a spicy chili relish and a hot lemon pepper mayo and add pickles. These three ingredients all exhibit a very robust tangy flavor profile with a bit of heat from the chilis and mayo. It's a very vigorous tart and tangy flavor that's completely different from the lighter acidity from the pickled vegetables that are typically included in Banh Mi. For me, at least, it's a little too strong and there isn't enough fat to help balance the flavors. Otherwise, the chicken is pretty good - seems like cubed thigh meat bits fried until crisp. Good flavor and not dry inside. There's plenty of lettuce as well, which is then sprinkled with additional pepper. It's still a good sandwich, but all the tart flavors just didn't work that much for my tastes. (4/5) Sandwiches come with a side of the Salt-n-Pepa Skins. They are very generous with the potatoes - it's probably double or more of what I usually expect, making the $19 paid for each sandwich way more palatable in terms of pricing. These potato skins are the definition of inconsistent - all pieces completely different sizes and shapes, filled with nooks and crannies. Some pieces are crunchy with skin full on, some pieces are almost to the point of being bitter and burnt, while other pieces are lighter in color. Some are fluffier, some are harder but cooked through. None are as fluffy as the inside of a typical french fry. The uniqueness of each skin makes each one delicious in its own way. The amount of salt added is much less than the typical french fry as well, making these less of a sodium bomb. I love this method of potato prep. (5/5) I think one of the owners came out and basically went to every every table to ask how everyone was doing. What a great gesture to see! Mean Sandwich serves some very solid sandwiches and I especially love the fried potatoes. I will definitely be back! Bathrooms - Single unisex room.

For some reason I tried it again today and was once again disappointed. Placed an online order to go: Greek fries and a side of gyro meat to throw on top, since sandwiches and bowls are $13-$16! Insane. I saw the bowls, they're not large. Not a great deal by any stretch, but that's lunch hour in Seattle I guess. The fries were soggy, barely any feta on top, and the "gyro" meat is just freakin' weird. It tastes like lamb meatballs. Not at all what I expected. On top of this, my order was not ready and I ended up waiting 15 minutes. Three people in line in front of me and three behind, but just one guy behind the counter taking and prepping orders, tickets popping out of the machine left and right until he cried uncle for some help. "Wow it got busy fast, went from no orders to backed up!" Yeah dude, it's 12:15. People get off at 12, call it in, take a piss and start walking to the restaurant, just like every lunch rush every day in a busy commercial core. I also dislike having to wait in line for a pickup order. I'm in a hurry. If you can't accommodate, I can go somewhere else. Just leave my order out! I did grab a jar of grilled preserved lemons to take home. Not sure what to use them for but they look delicious. All in all, not great, again.

We went on a Saturday around 2pm and it wasn't too busy at the takeout window. The restaurant is only takeout - there are benches right next to the takeout window, but there are only enough spots for 8 - 12 people (2-3 people per bench). The only other seating is at the nearby street seating offered by the neighboring bars, which I can see being restricted during peak hours. Parking can be very difficult if you plan on driving, there is only street side parking that is usually full, and nearby paid parking in lots. Service is fast, after we got our order, we only waited 5-8 minutes for our food. We got their recommended Soujouk (Beef) and Cheese Wrap for $16. The wrap is long, I would say about 13 - 14 inches long, and I can definitely seeing most people getting full after enjoying one of these. The flavors are nice and you can taste the spices from the sausage - I could taste cinnamon front and center with other earthy spices lingering in an aftertaste. The wrap is very decadent, the cheese is hearty and indulgent and that with the spiced sausage and textural difference with the cucumbers is pleasing. Do note with how indulgent this wrap is, you will accumulate a ton of oil in your wrapper as you enjoy it - a nap afterwards is in your future if you eat a whole wrap! I think that Yalla Seattle is a good stop to try these cuisines in a casual manner and the price is reasonable. There are some other items on the menu that kept my attention and I would totally revisit to try the other items offered by this restaurant.

Yalla is a walk up window, and there are just a couple of benches right outside where you can eat, and according to other reviews you can also go to Montana Bar next door with your food. The menu is posted in a couple places right next to the ordering window, and it's pretty easy to parse. Almost everything there is what I'd consider a "portable food", meaning something you don't need a plate, fork, and knife to eat, which makes sense given that it's not a sit down restaurant. They have veggie saj, meaty saj, mezze, a few sides, and a dessert. I really like their concise menu. We tried the baba ghanoush ($9.5), which comes with saj on the side, a batinjan and labneh saj wrap ($12), and a halloumi grilled cheese (halloumi grilled inside saj, $13). As you can tell, the saj underpins everything at Yalla, and their saj is excellent. Warm, soft, flaky, and tearable, it is perfect for both dipping and wrapping and grilling. The batinjan and labneh wrap is bursting (literally) with tender grilled eggplant, a rich sauce, and tangy, creamy labneh. It is truly one of the most delicious eggplant dishes I've ever had. The halloumi grilled cheese definitely hits the spot, and is more filling than you think by looking at it. Baba ghanoush is so smooth and flavorful, and I love the pomegranate seeds on top! The folks who work there are super nice, very friendly, and food comes out quickly. Prices are very reasonable, and I will definitely be back to try some of their meaty saj! This place is going into my regular rotation, for sure.

We originally went because we had seen good reviews for Almanqal Mediterranean Grill. When we got there, the server mentioned it's basically the same place but with a different menu, so we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The food took quite a while to come out and when it finally arrived, it wasn't even hot. The bread honestly tasted like something bought from a grocery store. The rice was very bland, and although the salad was actually really good, the chicken was extremely dry, chewy, and lacked flavor. The presentation looked nice, but the taste just didn't match. The portions were also quite small, and the prices felt very high for what you get. The service was just okay overall. Maybe they are still new and working things out, but for the price and portion size it just didn't feel worth it. The décor is function over form, i.e. basic. There were two staff members at the front, both of whom also prep food, cook, or grill. She told us to order at the cash register, but others had their order taken at their table later. While they have tables to sit-down, service was limited. They were also busy with takeout orders during the peak dinner time of 6pm. It wasn't until the end of dinner rush that they walked around the tables to refill water. Understandable given their small family business. The food is pretty good, more at a neighborhood scale; I wouldn't categorize them as 'worth the drive'. Prices are reasonable for the food, not high, not a bargain, either. The Food: Fried Cauliflower with tahini sauce, $10.50 - 4 Stars I have a strong affinity to Mediterranean fried cauliflower. Theirs is slightly soft but crispy on the outside nonetheless. Could be better, but we still liked it. Eggplant pickles, $9.99 - 3 Stars Menu: Grilled Eggplant, garlic, lemon juice, cilantro, The problem with ordering at the cash register is I tend to forget to ask question(s). My eyes lit up with 'grilled eggplant' (which I love) and neglected to ask if this is a hot or cold dish. It is a COLD dish and the keyword is 'pickles'. Chopped bits of pickle things covered the grilled eggplant slices. Cold eggplant is not that good, imo. Lamb Kebab Salad, $18.99 - 3 Stars Again, due to ordering at the register, I forgot to ask what kind of salad. While the lamb kebab pieces are very tender and good, the salad consists of uninspiring iceberg lettuce with tiny bits of tomato and tiny shreds of onions. Minus a star for the salad part. Lamb Kebab, $25 - 4 Stars This dish is served with one appetizer. We chose baba ghanoush. The fact this dish comes with a full-size appetizer makes this much more worthwhile than the salad. The lamb pieces are tender, and the rice is flavorful. The baba ghanoush is also good. Thumbs up for the trio. The overall rating should be 3.5 stars. I normally round down to 3 stars for the minimal service, but I am rounding up to 4 stars for the small family business.
