Absolutely fantastic sandwiches. Easily worth checking out. Interestingly enough, the sides are even better still. It's the old Jolly Roger, and even has the old JR painted concrete floor to prove the lineage. They've certainly made the space their own, so it doesn't matter how many fond memories you might have of the amazing old steak specials served in this room. The new boss is running a tight ship here. It's not huge, and the seating is kinda minimal--lightweight metal stools and flat butcher-block type counters and highboys, couple booths. You order at the counter and take your Hot Wheel for your table number. We got the D.A.M. Burger, the Jersey sub, the fully loaded Skins and Ins, and the Mean Salad. Plus iced tea with a decent tip, this was around $60 I think. The burger is rad. Smashburger style, just enough toppings, lots of yellow mustard. The vinegar flavor from the mustard could have stood a couple more flavors to keep it company, but this is a rad burger and disappeared in just a few bites. Nice char on the edge of the patty, great flavors throughout. The Jersey sub is a nice one. It's kind of tucked into a curl of a hero roll; it's like eating sandwich fixin's tucked into a crusty, chewy, elongated apostrophe. But they wrap it in enough butcher paper that you can easily get full bites every time, even though it seems like there's way more bread toward the bottom of the sandwich. Note--they bring every order out wrapped to go. Given the limited, non-plush seating, this is a good call. The potatoes are amazing, definitely the highlight of our meal. Soft flesh, crunchy skins. Great toppings--when you're just stabbing bites with a fork and always getting chives, bacon, and sour cream, it's all the fun of eating a baked potato, but much tidier, and the texture is way better since it's baked AND fried. Not exactly health food, but, man, is it delicious. The little to-go carton and plastic fork are a fun way to eat this. The Mean Salad turns out to be a wedge salad--big slab cut out of a head of iceberg. This is one vintage culinary trend that deserves every bit of revival it might get. The dressing is like an Italian/Caesar combo; creamy-ish, but no dijon or anchovy to push it into full Caesar. Lots of chopped fresh herbs and other bits making it interesting. You have to slice up the iceberg, but they do provide the plastic knife for that. The kids working here are super friendly and nice, fun to talk to. It's dog-friendly, and there were at least 4 pooches in there yesterday during a lull between meals in the afternoon. And we were there no more than 20 minutes. This is the more-industrial corner of Ballard, but it has an awesome neighborhood feel to it. Definitely coming back as often as we feel like rolling the dice on Ballard parking. read more

Dig they use vietnamese rolls a cert nice touch that many wouldn't even notice if you didn't mention it The cannibal sandwich...i mean steak tartare BLT is just the right amount and prepared with lemon juice as one would expect although many do not. The fries are nice. I'm not a fry hooman, but I can appreciate what they are trying to do here and the effort they put j to making them crispy. I am eager to put more of their bread ended meat stacks into my food hole. Case of ordering wrong? Not sure. We actually made a u-turn to hit up this place to grab some lunch to go for our road trip up north. I always trust a local fav from yelp and the amount of patrons waiting for food further supported that. However, the combination of super long wait, high price and lackluster sandwiches have left me feeling a bit bitter abouts things. I ordered the Buon Appetito (chicken cutlet sandwich) and the Jersey Sub (Italian sub) which are both $12. I thought it would be a quick process but the shop is small and it was very busy with orders going one at a time. It seemed like there was a combo of 4 or 5 people in the place ahead of me and who knows how many remote ordering. Pro tip (apparently) order ahead for pickup. I think my wait for 2 sandwiches was at least 25 mins. Out of the 2, the Buon appetito was better, but still mediocre. But the Jersey was just plain bad. Whatever sub roll bread is used tasted like cheap white bread and was probably the primary reason it tasted badly... bread is important. It was just really plain tasting. My falafel sandwich was very over fried, (almost black) yet the iceberg lettuce was soggy with drippings from the beets. The potato skins were also unbelievably overfried. Honestly a smashed up BBQ briquette would have tasted about the same. Also these Skins and In's come with every sandwich so the price reflects more than just a sandwich. I ordered the single DAM burger with only pickles, and mustard on the side. I asked if there would be a charge to add ketchup on the side, and they said no. I wound up getting a burger with no pickles, everything else on it (including cheese), and mustard on the side. I hate cheese, so I had to have them remake it. They charged me $0.50 to put the mustard (that comes on the burger) on the side, which doesn't seem fair. The skins & ins were pretty awful. I don't know if they were burnt or if that's how they're supposed to be, but even if they hadn't been cooked for as long, they still would have just tasted like flavorless baked potatoes. The smash burger itself was pretty good. The bun was buttery and crisp. The burger was well-seasoned and I enjoyed the crunchy edges. It's not overwhelming, and brings just enough flavor to let you know that it's there. But the true hero, the star of the show, is the French roll. This is truly what most sandwiches in Seattle are missing. A solid foundation on which to build a hearty sandwich is the most critical element. Without this, the sandwich will crumble, and you will be stuck with a hand of meat. I cannot stress how much the sandwich purveyors of Seattle should be studying the crafts of Mean Sandwich to find their way. Simply look for the large mouth of a logo and use it as a North Star. Everyone should be going to Mean Sandwich to have a Jersey sub immediately. Do not fear the $15 price tag, for this excellent sandwich comes with their outstanding fries as well. Spent the afternoon with a friend who suggested we come here for lunch. She told me she had been here before and that I would like it; she was spot on. Mean Sandwich is a small shop in Ballard that has no frills. Featured in Bon Appetit's 2017 List of America's Best New Restaurants, which I was informed about by my friend, I was intrigued to find a pretty basic menu: 7 sandwiches with 3 daily specials (soup may be one), 1 salad, 3 kinds of fat potato skins: salt & pepper or buffalo sauce or loaded-cheese/chives/bacon bits/more cheese, and yesterday's bun bread pudding. While my friend and I were staring at the menu trying to decide what to order, a member of BOH came out, started singing loudly along with the 80's song playing and a huge grin. "What should I get?!" belted out my friend. "Buon Appetito," he replied. She gushed. He kept singing. She informed me I had to get the skins and share them with her, so we got the salt and pepper. Buon Appetito is a chicken sandwich with buffalo mayo, provolone, tomato, lettuce, and a pickled pepper relish. It looked huge. It was. My bud ended up taking half the sandwich home for later. I got the Jersey Sub: capicola, provolone, salami, ham, lettuce, tomato, oregano, oil & vinegar (I asked for no red onion). Amazingly good. Crazy filling. The BREAD, man, the bread. It was like home, only a home I've never had. Their icon is a pair of lady's lips with red lipstick, and they had free stickers. We each grabbed one. I slapped mine on the back of my day planner which is now in the recycling bin somewhere, and I really, really want to go back and get another sticker. And a sandwich. You can get delivery.
