Decent place for poutine! We got the fried chicken and philly cheese steak poutine. The fries were nice and thick and the curds. omg the curds. They were SOOOO squeaky and chewy even after melting a bit which is exactly what I look for in poutine. Sadly the gravy was a bit salty for me and my fiancé's taste. The toppings were good for both the fried chicken and philly, but with the gravy it was a bit salty. We really liked the philly in spite of the saltiness though, as it had shredded beef, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. I'd recommend coming here and possibly asking for a little less gravy if the saltiness does bother you. read more

My first poutine in Canada and it was delicious. Similar to a food truck but in a store front, order at the window and take your food to go. There is no seating but the poutine was delicious. Had to have the classic Poutine since it is a staple of Canadian cuisine (I think) The combination of the crispy fries, gooey gravy, and chewy cheese curds tasted pretty well considering it is a simple dish. They do give a lot in that container and it does fill you up. In addition to poutines, they also make hot dogs and have a large selection to choose from. However they do not make all of them. When I went, they did not make the mac and cheese dog anymore and several other items. I'm guessing some items are seasonal or they just don't make them at all. The look of Mean Poutine is literally like a hole in the wall. Instead of a hole, it is a take out window and the menu is displayed on the wall. There is a shelf if you want to eat there standing, but there is no seating or indoors. Had to walk to a nearby park to dine alone. I did not get an unhappy service, but helpful in informing me that they did not make half the menu. Originally thought the "Mean" meant the runs, but I feel fine. It is fast food after all. Hands down the best place to get poutine in downtown Vancouver. I'm from NYC and every time I come here I swing by this place. I even select my hotel based on how close they are to mean poutine. Fantastic place for a late night snack (if you're an American)/ meal (for the rest of the world). This is a no frills hole in the wall that specializes in one thing. oh goodness, this little poutine stand is DELECTABLE. Facing the street as a small stand, I wasn't expecting much but whoah did it surprise me. I got the classic poutine, around ~7/8$? and I enjoyed every bite. The fries are coated or dusted with a light batter or something, but they are so perfectly crisp and hearty. These fries hold a fantastic crunch, even after they've been semi soggied by the gravy, but they still remain delicious. The gravy is generous and the cheesecurds melt finely into the mix. What was the best touch for me however was a simple sprinkle of green onions on top. It was such a minor detail but made my whole poutine experience so much more enticing. I went with one of the more popular choices: the Fried Chicken Poutine ($9), with chicken breast fried up and cut into chunks. You can get free additional toppings like diced green onions and sriracha. I received a nice helping of chicken on top, and the diced onion garnish adds a gourmet touch. You can't go wrong with rooster sauce. Awesome stuff here. I'd like to try the Southern BBQ Poutine (slow-roasted pulled pork and double-smoked bacon) or the Mama's Mean Meatballs Poutine (homemade Italian meatballs) next. Other reviews were really great so my expectations were a bit too high. I also just got back from Eastern Canada, so I have higher standards for poutine now compared to before. My main problems with this place are that the fries are frozen, bulk wholesale style, so there's not much flavor. They're also only single fried, rather than double fried. Properly made double-fried french fries have a crispier, crunchier exterior with a softer, fluffy interior. The harder shell prevents the fries from getting soggy from the gravy. The gravy was just quick mix. Not made from scratch. Not much flavor. The cheese curds weren't really that fresh, a bit dry, not enough and each piece was a bit on the small side. I had the Mean Supreme which turned out to be basically the toppings of a deluxe pizza dumped on top of a lacklustre poutine. Hold the phone everyone..THIS PLACE IS ON FIIIIIIRE I opted for the fried chicken poutine and it did not disappoint. It took about 10-15 mins to make bc it was made to order.. Not a problem. The chicken was super delicious, the breading stuck to the chicken for the most part really well despite being smothered in gravy. It was nicely seasoned and they chopped the chicken into nice little chunks. Kinda happy it wasn't bigger chunks bc that would make eating the poutine a little more difficult.. It was a pretty heavy duty fry for the most part but after being smothered of course, it limped out.. NBD though. Cheese curds were good, the longer some say the more gooey and melted it got. I actually liked it both ways so yay for that. I guess if there was a disappointment in the poutine, it's the gravy. While very complimentary with the whole poutine dish, it did taste a bit packaged and generic to me.. Like the packets you get form the grocery store and add boiling water to. Long lines, great poutine. For late night, served from a hatch, fast food, you really can't do much better in downtown Vancouver. Not only is the poutine delicious (in so much as poutine can ever be) its also surprisingly inventive for a an establishment whose clientele is so drunk that many will struggle to recall ever eating there in the first place. There's various topping combinations on offer. My personal favourites being the Fried Chicken or the Meat Supreme (beef, bacon, onions, peppers). I actually had consulted yelp beforehand and written down a few other poutine places, but the bartender at our hotel recommended Mean Poutine as the "only place" to go, and it was pretty close to our hotel, so we went for a late dinner. I had the Fried Chicken and it was pretty freaking amazing. I could only eat about half, but I mean fries, cheese, fried chicken with a "kick", what more could you want out of a meal?? Now, I want to talk about the gravy for a minute. I am not a gravy person AT ALL. I actually asked the lady who was working here what kind of meat the gravy was made from, in the hopes that I could switch to the vegetarian option, but she said all the gravy is vegetarian. I'm not sure if that is true, because it seems a bit hard to believe, but I will admit that it was delicious whatever it was. The only real downside is that there is no where to sit, and really no ambiance at all. There is a little metal counter you can stand at, but when you're sober and you're having dinner that's not exactly ideal. read more

I remember when this place first opened up, it was only open later in the day, by which time I was usually on my long bus ride back home. Now it seems that they are open for lunch, and I finally had my chance to give 'em a try. When I think of street food, I automatically think of a food truck or a hotdog stand. This may not be a meal on wheels, but this is definitely street food. Calling this place a hole in the wall actually makes it seem larger than it is. No, no. Not a hole in the wall. There is no seating at this restaurant. There is no door to this restaurant. There is no inside to this restaurant. This place is literally a DENT in the wall, it's so tiny. I order the fried chicken poutine, which consisted of fries, cheese curds, white and brown gravy, and buffalo chicken pieces (for the record, I was asked if I wanted green onion on top, but I declined). The chicken and poutine was definitely an interesting mix. All in all, all three necessary components of the poutine (fries, cheese, gravy) were passable in flavour. I was slightly disappointed at the amount of cheese curds in my poutine, but maybe Fritz and elsewhere has spoiled me. These guys really aren't bad. If they opened up a location out my way, I would definitely be a regular, as their poutine definitely beats out KFC, New York Fries, and other fast food chain options that surround me. The poutine comes out piping hot and fresh with just the right amount of sauce! The mushrooms came out perfectly al dente, bacon still crispy, fries right out of the fryer, and the green onion bits added nice flavor contrast to the box of savory goodness! Stopped here on our way out of Vancouver because we just HAD to get some poutine before we left. My friend and I split the buffalo chicken poutine. The food: WAS AMAZING. Honestly I don't know if I was starving or what but everything from the gravy to the cheese curds to the fries and chicken was on point. I was glad we got the buffalo chicken for the spice because regular fried chicken would've likely been too much of the same flavor. While it was a little pricey (~10), even when sharing the meal we didn't finish it all, which makes it worth it in my opinion, especially considering how much we enjoyed it. The vibe: This place is basically a walk-up window with no chairs or tables, which was fine for us as we were taking it to eat on the road. Our service was nice but the wait was long, although we went pretty soon after they opened so we understood for the most part.
