What a wonderful spot to grab different variations of Canada's national dish! This spot is perfect for poutine lovers and first-timers alike. I love that they have so many options and try to keep it as authentic as possible. It looks and tastes just like something you would find in Quebec! In contrast, the steamie delivered an altogether solid hot dog, between the tangy, crunchy coleslaw and the smoky, crispy bacon. Service was, well, serviceable. The cashier quickly took our order, but with only one cook, food took its time to hit the table. La Belle's poutine may have disappointed, but, for less than $15 total, the meal at least didn't hurt the wallet. Fantastic experience! Every time I am in Canada I have to have Poutine so as soon as we arrived I scoped out at place and La Belle Patate definitely hit the spot! Staff was extremely friendly and didn't rush us as we were looking through the extensive menu. We ended up choosing classic Poutine and the food came out super quickly despite the restaurant being pretty busy. The Poutine was absolutely amazing. The gravy was rich, creamy, and super delicious! The cheese curds were just firm enough so they didn't melt which is what I prefer. The atmosphere in here is very laid back and it appears to be a popular spot for locals. If I could give this restaurant 10 stars, I absolutely would! When I booked my trip to Vancouver, my first search was for poutine as that was the one Canadian dish I knew I had to try. I debated between a few options, but ultimately landed on La Belle Patate. I walked from my hotel in downtown Vancouver, which was pleasant and very accessible. The neighborhood has a really cool, hipster vibe and this spot fits right in. Upon walking in I was pleasantly greeted with my favorite music (a rarity) late 90's rock/metal. I had previously studied the menu and one of the reasons I selected this spot was because they had a vegetarian poutine. I placed my order for a small vegetarian poutine and selected one of the few available seats. This restaurant is really small, so I imagine they do a lot of to-go orders. Thankfully it was only moderately busy when I was there and I was able to grab a spot at the bar looking out over the street- which added a fun people watching element! My order was brought to me within a few minutes, piping hot and daring me to dive in. The smell was amazing enough, but my first bite was pure pleasure. The fries were cooked well enough so that they could hold up to the gravy and toppings, but were not overdone by any means. I managed to try a part of a fry not smothered in the heavenly gravy, and can confirm the fries are delicious even on their own. Let's talk about the gravy! I was unsure how much depth of flavor there would be since it was vegetarian and they couldn't use the crutch of bones or animal fats. I was blown away with the smooth, velvety masterpiece that burst with umami. The cheese curds were another highlight, firm enough not to completely melt, but still providing the ooey-gooey cheese pull you crave. The mushrooms, onions and green bell pepper rounded out the dish and in my option, could not be improved. This was seriously one of the best dishes I've had in a long time- and one I will remember. We came in wanting to try real, authentic poutine--and this place delivered. The girl at the register was incredibly helpful and welcoming. Knowing we weren't from Canada, she took the time to walk us through the menu and helped us pick the traditional poutine so we could get the full experience. And wow--it was delicious! Rich, cheesy, perfectly sauced, and so satisfying. We had a group of 7, and the locals in the restaurant couldn't have been kinder. Cheese Curds, anyone? Really great place to get Poutine in downtown Vancouver. Fresh cheese curds are a thing in Wisconsin, so have been able to get decent poutine while living there in the past. But poutine is a Canadian thing, so was looking forward to getting some on our Vancouver visit in April '24. My daughter did some research and came up with La Belle Patate as the place to go if staying in downtown. We came soon after it opened on a Sunday, and it was already getting crowded. The menu is displayed as multiple boards above the registers, and we placed and paid for our orders using a credit card. It took about 5 minutes for the food to be ready. The poutine comes in 3 different sizes. Smoked Meat Poutine (L) - $17: the chunks of meat is called Montreal Smoked Meat Brisket, and it tasted like pastrami. It was good, very little fat, not too tender. The cheese curds were broken up into its natural size, without needing to clump and were slightly heated. The brown gravy was not too thick and had the right seasoning. The fries were decent, thick cut and deep fried. This allowed each bite to have the right mix of warm cheese, gravy, and french fries. Of course, the fries got soggy so the best bites are the ones immediately after being made. We also got a Regular Poutine ($11) to go, and my daughter reported later that night, it was a great meal, even reheated. Did I mention that the brown gravy here is advertised to be vegetarian? Not sure how they do that, but wish we could use the same recipe for other brown gravy needs like Loco Moco and pot roast. Both white and malt vinegar were available, and as expected, it went well with the fries and meat. The dishes are very shareable, so makes sense to get bigger sizes to get better value, Was thinking if the combo of meat, cheese, and gravy would work on a baked potato...but I don't think it would be the same. Somehow the deep fried potatoes, even though losing its crunch, still adds that 'je ne sais quoi' that makes it a unique dish. La Belle excludes an establishment that has gotten its routine down pat, knowing it has the right product, at the right price, for both locals and tourists. read more

Went on a Wednesday afternoon recently a couple of hours before a Vancouver Canucks playoff game. La Belle Patate is in the heart of downtown Vancouver, about a mile and a half or so from where the Canucks play. Took the 6 bus from Robson St. up to this spot - the bus actually has a stop literally at the front door of the restaurant. Fairly small restaurant with a divish bar feel, but has a few TVs, and ample amount of seating, including bar seating. Spot wasn't too busy on a Wednesday afternoon so only had to wait a couple minutes before ordering. It's clear this place specializes in poutines, which is what the majority of their menu is comprised of. Ordered what seems to be the most popular item on the menu, the smoked ham poutine (medium size, which was $14 Canadian dollars, or around $10.25 in U.S. dollars). The poutine came out in less than 5 minutes. Not that I can say that I've had a lot of experience with poutine (being from the U.S.) but at least for me, the poutine was perfect, probably the best I've ever had. I definitely regret not ordering a larger size. La Belle Patate offers a wide variety (over 35 selections) of poutine options, as well as offerings of hot dogs and other smoked meats.
