Love this place! They have 99% of the things I need available the same day. Order online, pick up in an hour or have them ship it, it'll arrive the next day (in SoCal at least) I've even placed orders after 4-5pm and it will still ship out that same day so I can have my stuff the next day. When your options are 1) fix the threads you messed up on the first and only shot; or 2) cut a hole in the trunk of your car, drill out the fouled threads, grind off the nut welded to the shock tower, weld a new one on in an amount of space too small for a little person to get his hands into, and patch the hole in the trunk, you don't want to use Harbor Freight tools... I ordered a carbide starter tap, a carbide finishing tap, and a tap driver from McMaster Carr for about $60, and they were in my hands the next day. The taps arrived in plastic protective cases, and they were clearly well made. With some patience and care, the taps worked like a charm, I cleaned up the threads, and avoided a terrible alternative ordeal. I really appreciated how quickly and efficiently McMaster Carr got the tools to me. I'm all for cheap tools, but if you only have one chance to get the job done, this is a great resource. read more

McMaster is the greatest thing EVER! To an engineer, this place is heaven. The user interface on their website is the gold standard. You can find anything you need in just a few moments. You really can do it cave man style too... look at the pictures and click away. Pricing is usually a bit higher than you can find elsewhere but the service makes up for this. Shipping is extremely fast. At work, I get my parts same day. At home, I get my parts next day. If I need a part on a Saturday, I can order it and pick it up at will call typically within an hour (which is about the time it takes to traverse the 5 freeway). If you have questions, you can call or email and get prompt answers. They always answer my e-mails within an hour. If you are designing something, a large number of their parts have been modeled in 3D and are available for download on their awesome website. Some of us McMaster customers are lucky enough to have the bullet proof, 4 inch thick catalog with .0001 inch thick pages stored on the tank of the toilet for easy browsing during down time. It's like a bible. A few minor negatives to be said. First, they don't disclose the manufacturer of the part you are buying. However, the quality is always tops so you typically don't have to sweat this. Second... hell I can't even remember what the second one was. That's how great this place is. While McMaster Carr has loads of stuff, their policy towards small business is poor. I am local to their Sante Fe Springs warehouse and order all my parts through will call since I usually want the items now and I drive pass their location all the time. What is disturbing is that when they are out of something locally, instead of giving me the option to order something else and go to another supplier, they will, without my consent, process the out of stock item through one of their warehouses on the other side of the country and I end up having to pay shipping costs, which at times can be more than the out of stock item is worth. It is maddening that McMaster Carr thinks they have the right to make business decisions for my business. If they are out of an item, they should be giving me the option to decide if I want to pay the extra shipping and wait five days for the part, or go somewhere else. I guess that they are so full of themselves that they believe I should not have the option to go elsewhere. The fact that they think they have the right to make my business decison pisses me off to no end. I now have a policy to go to McMaster Carr as a last resort for my machining needs. If I am going to have to wait five days for a part, I can usually get the item a whole lot cheaper from Amazon or through Ebay. I have quit using McMaster Carr almost entirely for any raw metal needs. McMaster Carr is the best, most reliable company I have ever come across in industrial/commercial solutions. Their website is a thing of beauty, their staff is well-trained and friendly, they are simply awesome. The closest branch is over 100 miles from my work but they get things to me in around 5 hours, while the Grainger that is less than 10 miles away takes at least a day. One of the few places left where the customer is always right. I am astounded that such a large company can do such a great job, but they consistently come through. I have dealt with McMaster for several years and have almost always been completely happy with their products and service. The thing you have to understand is that they are NOT A RETAIL STORE. Yes, they will sell to anyone, but they are set up to service industrial customers (and they are VERY good at it), and quite frankly, when I'm ordering for my business, I don't care what the shipping charges up front anyway. I care that they have the parts I need and will get them to me by tomorrow morning. That said, their shipping charges have almost always been very reasonable (better rates than I can get from FexEx, that's for sure!) Their web site is far and away the industry standard for industrial distributors - no one, not Enco, not MSC and definitely not Grainger come close. Clear, visual part selection and SolidWorks files on many partsare sweet icing on the cake. I have never seen a better website for industrial distributors. PERIOD. Their prices are sometimes very good and sometimes they stink sideways, but I think if I were to average all my purchases out over the last year, I'd be ahead of the game. Plus knowing that you can get what you want - whatever you want - in a single place, without searching multiple distributors, without calling for quotes, without any of that hassle, that's worth a small fortune in saved time right there! read more

Will call pick up here is always easy. They're quick, they usually have more than one person working to pull the orders and they're always very polite. I took a star awY because of the parking......it sux big time! There is no way to sugar coat it either. Will call has 5 spaces, granted these spaces are BIG, they are designed for large trucks to park easily, I'm guessing for quick in and quick out loading. The other available parking is a journey! Suure, you can see the will call (door)ramp because the actually door has never been available for use in the 15+ years I've been picking stuff up for Sir-Grumps-A-Lot, but Lord have Mercy it's more then half a football field away. I dread going for this reason and this reason alone, I only do it for Grumpy so he's not as grumpy when he gets home. I've used McMaster-Carr for decades, going back to when I worked in the oilfield in the early eighties. They're still around and still carry damn-near everything under the sun. If you remember the Roadrunner cartoons, Wiley Coyote would always send off for these crazy things from "ACME". Everything from anvils, to gigantic magnets to rocket-powered roller skates. Well, McMaster-Carr is the next best thing to ACME... If you like to build things, tinker, machinate or construct elaborate contraptions to take over the world with, MMC is your place. Although you can still order from MMC using their enormous yellow catalog and a telephone, most folks today order from their website. Their website operates very quickly and has an excellent search box. It also allows you to narrow your search quickly by size, material type and other characteristics. I frequently use this and it works great. Many items have a drawing detail of the item so you can actually view a 2D dimensional drawing of the part. This is extremely helpful if you need more than merely a written description. When selecting items, you simply click on the item number and add it to your cart. When you're finished adding things to your cart, you complete your order and pay, and you're all done. Their website does have a couple little quirks that aren't ideal, but once you get used to it, it's no big deal. For one thing, when you do place your order, there's no intermediary step to confirm your order. There's just an acknowledgement that pops up letting you know you'll be e-mailed a receipt. Fast but a little scary. Second, shipping prices are a big mystery. They don't appear on your order and will only appear on your invoice later when the items are shipped. For many local orders, MMC uses couriers, so shipping will be fast - often same day, but you won't know how much you've paid for shipping until after you've placed your order. The third thing to watch out for is the quantities. When you buy from MMC, a lot of hardware items are sold in bulk. Unless you need 250 neoprene rubber isolator bushings, check the quantities. Last, while MMC does have everything, they may not have the best prices. Shop around as usual if you're looking for a bargain. Perhaps the very best thing about MMC is their customer service. Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, accommodating. The accolades just go on and on. All companies should require that their customer service trainees spend time at McMaster-Carr as interns. They're really that good... They're not engineers, so don't expect them to read your mind when you walk in looking for some mysterious piece of threaded metal, but if you do your own research and know what you want, they're extremely helpful. Excellent service, prompt shipping, very responsive to email questions (less than 2 hours turnaround and very informative, clear explanations). I had one concern, submitting an order not knowing the s&h cost in advance. But that was me being paranoid. I was informed the s&h is too hard to determine before an order is pulled and packed, and when the tubing shipment arrived that was entirely clear. 10 feet of tubing product was about 3 feet in diameter. Longtime customer, they set the standard for how things should be done. I mainly order online, but I do call in orders now and then. They also have an App that works very well, so when you are on your smart phone that is much easier than accessing via a web browser. I don't think I have ever had a wrong order. Anytime I have talked to customer service they have been super nice. What gets me and prompted this review is the little things, like when you call them (like I just did) their system knows who you are because of your phone number, you don't have to go through a bunch of BS about who you are etc etc you call and get right to the order/issue no wasted time, that's smart. I'm in San Diego so my orders are shipped , they recently switched me from UPS to a courier , so much better ,cheaper, faster . I just placed an order at about 5:50PM I know that I will have than in the morning. If I order in the morning I have my order in the afternoon same day. McMaster is always looking for ways to be more efficient........... PS This is an industrial supply house geared to supplying business, manufactures, machine shops etc etc , it is not Home Depot if you don't know what you are doing this is not for you, also I see several whiners complaining about not know shipping price at the time of order, their shipping rates are way below what others would charge for something coming from the same region. (Thus order was to replace a defective order from months back) When I arrived after a 30mim drive, my order could not be found. I spent 10mins on the phone with sales trying to track it down only to find out that it had been shipped instead. Now I have to send it back and wait for my ccd to be credited sometime next week.
