Updating my previous rating of 4 stars, because they are now open until 5 pm on Saturdays, and they have samples! I like coming here to the factory store whenever I can, because they have more variety of their own butter, jams, sauces, as well as box mixes (for crisp, muffins, bread, etc) than you can find at other stores that carry a limited selection of their products (and cheaper too). Even though I now live in NoVa, my brother has lived in Frederick for almost a decade and I even lived with him for a period of time before moving to Alexandria. But it is hidden away, so break out your GPS! Now I was thinking, how great must this place be to have ALL 5 star reviews. All it is is apple butter and some flavored jelly right?? Well I got the apple butter and then I also got some of their BBQ sauce. The BBQ is awesome. I love it the most because it is only 10 calories a tbsp. (Hello, how is that even possible) Now as for the apple butter... WONDERFUL! I love it in oatmeal, I love it on toast. I love it on bread that ISN'T toasted. I do love it, Sam I Am! Handy Tip! If you're buying five or more cases of cider... you can go straight to the wholesale office! Straight to the top! Literally, it's just at the top of the ramp on the right side of the building, second door on the left. 5 cases of cider is 20 gallons. Apple Cider: You can get in gallon plastic containers Other Ciders: Glass gallon jugs BTW you can get "filtered clear" apple cider or "cloudy" apple cider. They also sell peach and cherry cider which is predominantly apple cider but flavored with those other fruits. The customer service at the Wholesale office is very nice. Also, you can order a lot of their other items wholesale. They had a long list of wholesale items (I'm assuming it just has to be certain amounts for the wholesale price). The front has a retail store with all sorts of goodness in it. I can't wait to go back and explore the retail store when I have time. read more

They have bbq sauces, rubs, cobbler toppings, and other food items. They offer baskets and other notions that are locally made and art by local artists. This city boy has no problem embracing the good ole country store for some seriously prime apple butter and pumpkin butter. Since I've come to Frederick, this stuff has become a staple in my fridge. I'm not a huge fan of apples themselves, but from what I've seen they have some of the best prices around If you're into buying the fruit. But don't think it's just limited to that. It's an entire store dedicated to a million different kinds of snacks and spreads. Seriously, it's as if they channeled Bubba from Forest Gump to see how many ways they can serve fruit instead of shrimp. I was born and raised in Frederick, so after many years of not visiting, I knew I had to stop by here and stock up! I wish I could have taken more back with me! They are most famous for their Apple Butter (which is indeed my favorite) and you can't even keep track of all the kinds of jams and preserves you can get here. I also LOVE their Birch Beer (which is non-existent in San Francisco) so I had to buy a few bottles. They also have amazing spaghetti sauce and pickles. Not to mention all the Frederick and Maryland souvenirs you can get here to bring back to friends. I really wish I could have bought more, but my suitcase was stuffed and heavy already. When my husband was alive we ran a produce stand in Laurel Maryland and weI got all our jellies, apple cider, preserves, and many many other items from McCUTCHEON'S. Unfortunately, a few years ago my husband passed and we had to close our produce stand. I do still buy from McCUTCHEON'S to send to friends and family all over the country. They are very good The store itself has some free samples (yeah!) and they have a variety of apple products along with other mom and pop goods. I won't go into too much detail, as the other reviews have described this place well. Five stars might be a tad high (the stuff is good, but not 5-star good), but I will give it to them because they keep their prices reasonable. And the fact that many of their jam-type products come in a fruit-juice sweetened option (as well as the traditional style). There is enough variety of products to create your own gift basket, and bags of fresh apples in the cooler to take home for yourself. I wasn't expecting to see items such as homemade mustard and salsa (several flavors), dry mixes (biscuit, pancake, etc.), as well as the jams and jellies. I was able to create a fairly sizeable gift basket for around $20. The one thing I would like to see is samples! I would probably buy more if I could try some of the stuff. read more

Great apple butter and apple cider, and tons of other tasty treats. My personal favorites are the cherry butter and the Garden Style Spaghetti Sauce (which is same sauce used by Nido's in Frederick). The bread and butter pickles are very good, and I also like the beet balls (if you like that sort of thing!). The Black & Blue mixed berry preserves are excellent. They also have a variety of peanut brittle and cashew brittle, cake and dip mixes, and handmade soaps. The prices are great ($2.95 for a jar of preserves that costs $3.95-$4.95 at most places that sell McCutcheon's). Also lots of Frederick souvenirs, so this is a great place to take visitors from out of town. They are closed on Sunday though...open Sat. 9-5. read more

Their apple butter is brilliant - truly the best I've ever had, and the price can't be beat. The pumpkin butter is like spreading the eponymous pie on toast. Try it over top a generous slather of cream cheese... ...But the reason I'm in line is for their spicy pepper relish. It is addictive. I live in Los Angeles and bought a jar of their peach butter at a store out here. Outstanding product. Have since ordered a case of their products, have run through or given away all 12 jars and am about to order another case. Their prices are very reasonable but the shipping cost is pretty high if you just buy a jar or two. Order by the case and the unit shipping cost becomes more reasonable and believe me, you won't be disappointed. Standouts include the fig preserves, the bone-sucking BBQ sauce and our all-time favorite the Sweet Vidalia Mustard - the wife and I go through a bottle every couple of weeks. I can sum up McCutcheon's with one word: MARMALADE. Their orange marmalade is the absolute bomb. They had none most of last year due to some problem with the orange crop, which put me on the brink of checking myself into marmalade rehab until it finally returned to the shelves in early fall. As good as you can get! Their horse radish mustard is the best mustard I have found yet. I like all of their preserves and jellies. My favorite is "Triple Crown" - Strawberry, Red Raspberry and Cherry preserves but I also like the Strawberry, Elderberry and just about everything else they make. While I agree their products are wonderful and I love the fact I am buying local, I was very displeased with their "credit card" policy. My husband and I were passing thru the area and it is very rare that either of us have cash. We both have direct deposit and use our visa check card for 99% of our purchases. I bought a few things and waited in the long check out line to be told by the cashier that I didnt buy enough to use my check card. I was informed there is a dollar minimum in order to pay with a credit card of any kind. I know that this is not legal. If merchants agree to accept payment with credit cards, they can not put a dollar amount on that purchase. There was no ATM inside the store so I refused to buy items I didnt want or need in order to meet the minimum amount to pay with a credit card. That was very disappointing. read more

Stumbled upon the Vadellia onion steak sauce at Knills farm in Mt. Airy, MD. We love onions on our steaks, so I thought we might give this a whirl. Holy moley we finished the 2oz. bottle within the month. You literally can put this sauce on anything!!! Salad, chicken, burgers, steak, shrimp...We even glazed our veggie skewers in the sauce. Perfecto. The sauce is low calorie with delecrible sweet peppery taste. Wish it came in larger bottles!!!!!! Fantastic job! Looking forward to trying the spaghetti sauce...
