New lights new bar!
Kyle C.

McCleary's. Wow. What can you say about a place that has $2 shots of Jack every Friday? They are truly doing the community a service. Whether you are there to pregame, post game, or spend your evening, McCleary's and their staff will treat you right. From the outside, the place looks kinda shady, I admit that. The clientele can also look a little sketchy, but I have met some of the nicest and most genuine people at my time there. It's really a friendly place. And as I said, "Jacked Up Friday's" is a steal of a deal! Get your song on the Juke box and chill out down there on Orchard!

The front door. Also parking in the rear.

This is one of the finest Dives in Boise. Stiff drinks, great atmosphere and an awesome smokers…read morepatio. I don't smoke but the vibe and conversations out there priceless. Jack is always in a great mood and keeps everyone topped off and laughing. The other bartenders are great as well. Sometimes there are a few oddballs (guests) but that's part of the allure. No food to speak of but there's always a great tap list. Not sure if the pool table is still up and running (Fuck you COVID-19) but there is usually one. edit: there are dart boards now where the pool table used to be.

From 2-5pm, 4 teams of 20-60 adults participated in a scavenger hunt searching for clues at 6 different downtown Boise bars. We didn't just run in and out--we did spend money at the venues, and most of them understood that this was a good opportunity to increase their visibility and build goodwill for their establishment. This is an excerpt from the post-event communication: "Thank you...to the participating venues who graciously allowed our participants to invade their venues to complete the scavenger hunt: 10 Barrel Brewing, Barbarian Downtown Beer Bar, Cactus Bar, Hap Hap Lounge, Liquid Lounge, Shrine Social Club." It was very disconcerting when the lead bartender at Cactus Lounge was remarkably rude and uncooperative with participants. Not only did he refuse to accommodate a simple request for handwriting the total of a bill on the receipt ("I don't have time--I have customers to serve [there were perhaps 6 other patrons in the bar, none of whom were actually waiting for service at the time]), he immediately blocked another employee, who also did not have anyone waiting for service, from participating. It would have taken less time for him to handwrite the total than it took to for him to be actively obstructive. I have no idea what his motive was in being uncooperative, however, that behaviour significantly diminishes my interest in going to Cactus Bar in the future. The staff at the other 5 venues were awesome, despite being busier than that bartender at Cactus Bar. I encourage considering supporting the more hospitable establishments in downtown Boise.

The drink specials that are on the weekends before 11 are not bad for Boise standards. The staff here is a hit or miss in regards to quality and friendliness however for the most part the experiences i've had with the staff here are positive. I will say that often times on the weekends, especially on special event nights or when BSU is in session Roddys does get a bit crowded and a bit on the warm side as well due too all the people. This is the only bar in Downtown Boise that has a mechanical bull which generally costs five dollars to ride. While this technically is a country bar they do however tend to mix in some hip pop or top 40 music in the mix. Like Strange Love club which is owned by the same owner the regular drink prices are a bit on the pricey side

I was simply waiting at a table for them to finish. Two bouncers came to me harriesed me told me they were trained to know when someone had to much to drink (even though I didn't drink) manhandled and assaulted me even when I was shouting "I have a physical disability please show down" and throw me outside. All I was doing was waiting for my friends to finish having fun. I should press charges but I don't have the energy for that hassle. I shouldn't be surprised by this happening but this is the very first time I got kicked out of a bar and I didn't even drink.

It is no wonder Esquire Magazine once called this spot "the one true classic in Boise." The atmosphere is steeped in history, featuring a stunning 114-year-old hardwood Brunswick bar and a beautiful turn-of-the-century National Cash Register. From the vintage cigarette machine by the door to the classic pool table, every corner of the saloon radiates character and charm. The history here is fascinating--it originally served as a grocery store before transitioning into the Stockman's Pastime Bar in the 70s, eventually becoming the Pengilly's we know and love in 1976. That legacy is felt in the soul of the building. The service is consistently excellent. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, making every visit a great experience. Whether I'm ordering a Sex on the Beach or sticking to a Shirley Temple when I'm the designated driver, the drinks are always spot on. My fiancé usually goes for a double Jack and Coke, and we always have a fantastic time soaking in the live music performed by talented local artists. If you are looking for an authentic, historic, and lively spot in Boise with a warm atmosphere and great vibes, Pengilly's Saloon is the place to be. We can't recommend it enough!
