New Merrills to replace my worn out Keens.
    Gary F.

Old school small town non-chain (as far as I know) department store. The tiny town I grew up in had something similar. Locals owned it, locals worked there and they stocked things they knew were needed and appreciated in the community. McCaulou's is that kind of place. They don't throw a wide selection of brands typically, but they cover the basics pretty well with well selected quality brands. I can't say I come here often, but they've met my needs when I have. I appreciate that, and like to support local businesses. I see a few people give low ratings here... but I'm guessing it's an expectations thing. They expect a Walmart... or a Target... or something similar. That isn't what McCaulou's is... McCaulou's doesn't even pretend to be one of those stores. Seriously, if you want Walmart, go to Walmart. It's that simple. I came here because another shop on the other side of the freeway closed earlier than I expected (5PM vs 5:30PM as listed in Yelp). I needed new shoes, I don't have many days off these days, and I had planned to get some shoes. The other shop (which I do love and have bought several pairs of shoes and socks there) didn't work out, so I came here. They didn't have the brand I was looking for (Keen) but they did have another quality brand that was very similar (Merrell)... they had the size I needed... so mission accomplished! The Merrell's have Vibram soles which is probably an upgrade over the Keen soles, but time will tell.

Nice dress shirt in basic gray. Sales clerk was helpful in picking it out. Thanks!

A few months ago, I stopped in to buy a dress shirt. I was going into the City and needed a nice shirt for going out to dinner. While I was disappointed the inventory was so small for dress shirts, I was very pleased with the excellent customer service I got. The sales clerk was very helpful and pointed me to a nice dress shirt in basic gray. And, I am happy to say, I found a tie that went well with the shirt. The shirt was reasonably priced. Yet I hope that whoever orders the inventory for the men's department, will eventually have more selection of shirts and slacks for occasions other than being a tourist on vacation. But then again, maybe that is what our high tech culture has become, a large group of spectators and leisurely visitors, not doing much else.

Hooray, the Bay Area department store chain has opened a new store in the building formerly occupied by Gottschalk's. It even lays out like its predecessor, except the men's department is much larger (due to their not having a Housewares department). This store carries a broad spectrum of cosmetics and skin care products, including Estee Lauder. One thing I noticed right away, is the staff is not as geriatric as the previous occupants of this building. We used to dread going to Gottschalks, but this store seems more inviting without the old biddies. Great selection and reasonable pricing when compared to Macy's.

It still has the feel of the old Gottschalks, which the building once housed.

Alright, time for an update!…read more Costco still remains a daunting, unfriendly and very troubling place for me. It's American mass consumerism at its prime and worst. I need to go when the fewest people are there, otherwise it feels like a horror movie... all those people running around with multiple carts overfilled with stuff, some actually frantic. Besides who really needs six jars of super sized mayonnaise unless you have a family of twelve or more? However, there are some redeeming factors to shopping here, and possibly getting a good deal. This still remains the ONLY Costco in the area I'll visit for otherwise being run over by a crazed shopper with a full pallet of merchandise. So. Some great finds- We got two new good quality camping chairs for the outdoor concerts we attend at a rock bottom price! Woo hoo! Then I found a large container, yet still manageable, of my favorite snack treat, Aussie Bites, at a great price. Please don't buy them out!!! The maple syrup is good quality and less expensive than anywhere. The paper goods can also be a very good deal. Just have a big storage space for a gazillion rolls of toilet paper. They were unfortunately out, or no longer carrying, two other favorites, the top sirloin hamburgers and the Korean dumplings (an easy and quick, delicious treat). I recommend perusing the aisles as one never knows what really interesting product or bargain is lurking in the depths of this monster store. Oh, and if you want a ginormous TV that will never fit anywhere or a casket, just in case, they have those too. Plus, it's fun to count how many giant SUVs are parked in compact parking spaces to be as close to the front door as possible! After all, there's enough walking inside! You do need a membership to enter.

They say Costco on them but they run through Electrify America, and they are F-A-S-T. I got up to 230 miles (80% ish for me) in 10 minutes from nearly dead quickly after I shopped. The crowd has usually been lighter than other Costco locations, which makes getting in and out easier. I think part of that is the location. Sierra College Boulevard does not have a huge commercial strip or much dense housing beyond the two nearby shopping centers and small neighborhoods, so the store feels calmer than the bigger warehouses. If you like Costco but not the chaos, this location has been the one I keep coming back to.

I tried to return the jacket 2 days later for store credit after deciding it wasn't quite right for this person, but I couldn't find the receipt. Jacket was in the pink Skye bag with original tags still attached. I was told that without the bar code on the receipt the item could not be returned or exchanged because they have to have the receipt code to look it up in their system. I do not believe that there is no way around this in their POS. I believe they have a completely inflexible return policy with no room for human error. I was told to find the receipt or there is nothing they could do for me. Over $50 down the drain. What's sad is that I'm a local shopper and I like a lot of what they carry in the store. I wasn't looking for a refund and I would have been more than happy to buy other items at the store. Yes, I should have kept my receipt. I intended to, and somehow it disappeared during my Christmas shopping errands. Yesterday was trash day so I can't even dig through and see if I accidentally threw it away. I understand the policy as a small business of no refunds. I don't understand the rigid stance that without a receipt you can't even exchange for other items in the store. The store would not lose any money by honoring store credit.
