I hate this store! When they were hiring before they opened I went to see what they had available. Not really knowing what to expect, I came in looking for a commission based position at one of the counters such as jewelry or makeup. The managers wanted to hire me right away for any position but I had to talk with the owner first. WOW! This guy REALLY thinks he's something special, when in fact, he's just another fat, balding douche! He was immediately put out by having to stop what he was doing to talk with me. Without bothering to look at my resume first, he looked at the yearly salary I had requested and asked me if I'd ever made that kind of money before! I had to explain that yes, I had, in commission based sales which is what I was looking for. I told him I really liked jewelry and was interested in selling it. He proceeded to look me up and down and said "well you're not wearing any". I was dressed conservatively with a small pair of earrings, chain with pendant and two rings on! I looked at the jewelry I was wearing and said "I'm not?". He told me that only the managers made that kind of salary and there was no way that I was going to make more than minimum wage. I looked over at the manager who was sitting next to me and he was visibly mortified by the whole exchange. How embarrassing to be sitting there in front of a prospective new hire being berated for simply inquiring about a job!!!!! Really? Due to this astonishing waste of my precious time, I will never patronize this business, especially when most of the product can be purchased elsewhere for much less. Thanks but no thanks. read more

Well although it's an interesting place, one must thank Auburn for having a store to shop in for those emergency items, gifts and whatever else. They do have a great selection and quality name brand items. My sister always ends up finding some super cute shirts. Four stars for effort, being clean and displaying things nicely. I fell in love with this type of store that is almost extinct. Everything is marked down and the quality is that of Nordstrom. The location in auburn has gifts and toys. A real joy to find a place where I can find things for myself and the family including gifts. Though it is a drive from Sacramento... I will make it from time to time for a special treat. I shopped here for Christmas. It was a great experience. The clerks were friendly but not overly familiar. Whoever is doing the buying is doing a good job. The gifts I purchased were not overly expensive, good quality and varied options were available. It felt like Christmas in the old days. I shopped women's sleepwear, men's clothing & sundries, and stationery. Next year I'm sticking with Auburn for my shopping and McCaulou's will top the list. read more

On June 14 I went shopping at McCaulou's for clothes I need for a cruise. I entered the store with a shopping bag from Draper and Damon's which contained 3 articles of clothing I had purchased from Draper and Damon's the day before. I brought them because I was hoping to match them with something from McCaulou's. I did not notice the young woman who passed by me three times peering into my shopping bag as I stood at the register paying for $300.00+ worth of clothes. My mother was seated about 10 feet away taking it all in, but did not say anything about it at the time. After the third look see the young woman disappears and her manager comes up to me while I am still at the register and says I want to look in your bag, would you mind? I tell her quite curtly, YES, I DO MIND. Why do you want to do this? Obviously I am being accused of stealing. I say go head because obviously I have no choice. She proceeds to rummage through me possessions. She thanks me as she leaves as though breaking the law and violating my rights is made alright by a thank you. To add a bit of perspective about this setting I am 62 years old with bright white hair. I have a doctorate and do not resemble anyone who needs to steal to clothe themselves. My mother who is 83 is seated ten feet away. In my ENTIRE life no one has ever accused me of stealing. This was absolutely disgusting, humiliating, and unlawful. In CA the law says no one can be accused of stealing until they are 50 feet outside the store. I guess the manager doesn't deal with people that know the law but my lawyer will be setting McCaulou's straight next week. read more

This is a great "small" department store, which is very much needed in Auburn and the surrounding area. The items are varied and trendy, and it is easy to get in and out and fun to shop there. I have found the staff generally helpful and friendly at McCaulou's. The clothes selection is not great, but I seem to find what I need when I'm there. I was at the store today and had an item gift wrapped. The embellishment on the box was one ribbon tied around lengthwise with a shoelace tied bow in the middle. Whoever wrapped the present didn't even bother to make sure both the loops were even or turned right side out. I understand that this is a courtesy wrap, but it was something my 10 year old could have done for me. read more

I was followed around the store the entire time. It was uncomfortable to shop at all. I will NOT be coming back to this location. If I ever want merchandise from this store again I will drive to the one in Oakland, CA because dealing with these employees is not worth it. I live in Auburn and must say how embarrassed i am by this store. The community can come up with some place better to shop than this. The staff there is very rude. The management is down right scary. Every time i have been in hoping its different i always come out wondering why i wasted my time here..The return policy is really strange. It's sad because i want to keep my money in Auburn but this place is a train wreck so i am forced to go elsewhere for quality service and products into nearby Roseville. Terrible service and poor quality clothing items. Purchased a $30 button up shirt, wore it once, then started fraying under the arm. Took it back to exchange, and spoke with two managers who refused to return the item because I did not have a receipt. Kim, a Manager, was rude and unwilling to offer any assistance. Auburn needs a store like this so I was pleased when it first opened. In the handful of times I've gone in there now I can say it has two things going for it. The shoe department and the cosmetics. Everything else is ridiculously over priced and the staff ranges from bored to rude. God forbid you should have to return something, unused with tags still on it and a receipt...manager must be called and they ask you a zillion questions. Made me feel like I had done something wrong. This was in two different departments even. The junior section is the worst, I am a petite woman who may not be the most fashion savvy but the looks and the attitude I've been given when I've asked for help has flat out pissed me off. As mentioned in another review, each department has it's own music playing and it's horribly annoying. Their clothes seem to be too old or too young, either way, the only thing I'd miss if they didn't last is the shoe department and access to decent cosmetics without driving down the hill! read more

I received a gift CERTIFICATE to McCaulous for Christmas. It was my first time in this store. I bought a pair of shoes and it was a huge ordeal. The lady who rung me up had no idea how to ring up a gift certificate. SHE WAS NOT NEW (she told me this) so she called over another lady to help her. The whole process of using this gift certificate was horrible. The staff has to make a call to a call center and give the purchase price along with the gift certificate number. Sounds easy but takes the staff FOREVER if they dont know how to use it correctly. I would never give a gift certificate for mccaulous EVER!!! So after I bought the shoes I had a remaining amount of about $60 on the gift certificate. A few months later I returned to this store to spend the remainder and once again the staff had no idea how to correctly call in to redeem the certificate. Another experience I had here was when my son received a pair of pants for his birthday FROM this store. The tag was still attached but the price was removed. The lady who helped me said that she could not exchange them for a larger size because they didnt have the price on the tag...I wanted to exchange for the same exact brand and style pants. The price would be the same as the other pair right!? What a joke. Horrible customer service. The only reason I didnt go lower than a 3 star is because I do like the brands for kids clothing, shoes, makeup section, and gifts. The PJ section and womens section is horrible. I am so happy to actually have a nice department store other than Gottschalks. While that was a nice department chain, this store has surpassed my expectations. Sure it does draw an older generation, but the customer service is stellar! I think the general population is so used to self service, that no one understands what it is like to have a good customer service experience. I have always found what I wanted there, and have had the most courteous of clerks help me. The name brands are very nice and a bit pricy, but some brands just are. Their Junior dept is very nice for the younger generation and I, a woman in my 50's actually found some good finds at a great price!! I purchased a children's pair of shoes on November 6, 2013. On November 8, 2013 when my daughter came home from school my husband noticed that they were coming unglued thus falling apart. I promptly went to McCaulou's after work to return/replace shoes. I was first told that I gave the sales woman a receipt for June. I pointed out that their receipts have the month NOV a couple of spaces then 6/13, the 6/13 is the day and year of the purchase not the month. The associate then called for a manager. The manager treated me horribly and began to badger me on the practices of what my child does while she wears shoes. I don't care what she does, shoes shouldn't fall apart in TWO days! It was obvious they thought I was trying to run some sort of scam and checked the lot number on both shoes the box and the receipt all of which matched. But to be clear, she does normal kid stuff, skip, play on the playground or field at school. The manager then told me there wasn't anything that she could do for me because its obvious that my child is hard on shoes. What? I asked to speak with someone higher than her since it was obvious I wasn't going to get anywhere. It was at this point she informed that she was the Store Manager and again there was nothing she could do for me. I walked out of that store with my two day old shoes feeling like a total piece of dirt. I have never been treated so badly. I will admit that I buy most of my childrens shoes from Nordstrom, you know the store where they stand behind what they sell and if I had purchased these Van's from them I have no doubt they would have returned them offered me my money back or the money to put toward a new pair of shoes. Small town stores need to offer exceptional service, that is why people want to shop in a small town, not to be treated like a piece of garbage. Ooh and my friends, I am not alone, I have posted my story on FB and have found many others that are disssatisfied with this store as well and their lack of customer service. I can't give them any stars but if forced will only be giving them one and that is a gift. read more

I worked there a little less than a year and it was the worst experience of my life. I was depressed from that place. Not only did I witness them treating customers unfairly but they treat their own employees like garbage also. I was uncomfortable on how they stalked customers like they were stealing , they treated employees like 2 year olds and with little respect. I was really excited when they opened the store in the old Gottschalk's building. I shop there quite often, great for the last minute gift. I hate driving to Roseville Galleria and always fighting the crowds and traffic. This store is a pleasant surprise if you take the time They have a variety of clothes and I can usually find something to purchase. I love that they have a nice cosmetics area, women's, petites, children's, men's as well as juniors and lingerie, a great selection of gift items. My only suggestion is that they order some of their women's clothes in larger sizes, not everyone is a Small or Medium. The sales staff has always been helpful and courteous. It is a diamond in the rough and could use a few tweeks , but I love it and I am glad they are here. Many people don't even realize it is here, some advertising would help. read more

Terrible customer service! I purchased a pair of DC shoes for my 9 year old. I was told they were a "final sale" item because they were last year's model. My son wore them to school for three days and the whole side ripped out of the shoe. The store manager refused to let me return or exchange them--she said she could tell that it was not a manufacturing defect--that my child must have done something to the shoes to make them tear like that--very rude and insulting! I had to contact corporate offices and make three trips to the store to get an exchange pair...I won't shop there again! read more

My high hopes for this new store were dashed at my first visit to McCaulou's. The prices of their merchandise are rediculously high and the atmosphere odd and disorienting. Though I have not experienced rudenss from any of the staff, I will say that they have been less than helpful and poor knowledge of merchandise. I too have experienced the "no price tag" phenomena and not pursued purchase of many items. On the plus side,it's an ok place to pick up a quick gift and the lady that does gift wrap is a real pro. The ladies sleepwear section is well stocked and probably the best area of the store. You can pick up some great sales on merchandise they are trying to blow out. The few times I have been in the store there are few to no customers and they do nothing to encourage their popularity. They do not advertise sales, they do not offer discounts to the seniors, no free tax days and seemingly, no community involvement. That they are able to keep the doors open is a mystery. This location must be a great tax write off for this family held business. It is unfortunate that we can't attract a store that is more geared to our demographics and better customer service. read more

I just went in McCaulou's with my sister. Knowing we could potentially be harassed for being teenagers with backpacks -as we just came from school- we had our mom come in and make sure that there wouldn't be any problem and we even asked if she wanted to keep our backpacks behind the counter. We were assured that there wouldn't be a problem so we continued with our shopping experience. We were literally followed around the store and harassed THE WHOLE TIME. We were asked probably ten times by separate employees if we were "doing alright". I am so done with being harassed by these employees and WILL NEVER return to this store. BEWARE future McCaulou's shoppers: you are subject to a horrendous shopping experience. read more

Terrible, terrible service. I went to do a return (basically a pair of linen-like material pants, unrelated but just know they wrinkle easily). I had my receipt and the tags still on the garment so I thought I would be in and out. Wrong. I bring the return to the register with the card I purchased them on. The woman checking me out takes the pants out of the bag and says, "You want to return these? But they are VERY wrinkled." I thought she was kidding so I sort of laughed and said, "Yes, well they have been the bag since I bought them." (Obviously! The alternative is that I've been wearing them around and now want to return them)! She shakes her head. She then asks, "Why did it take you so long to return these? Don't you live around here?" I was still within the 30 day return limit so I was confused. I said "No. I don't live in Auburn, but I have 30 days to return right?" She sighs. Clearly she doesn't approve, but I really don't care; I just want to do my return and get out at this point. I was planning on doing more shopping, but now I definitely don't care to. She looks at the card I gave her and says, "Your name isn't on this." (Let me explain here that the company I work for pays us directly onto a company Visa card. It gets loaded each week with the wages earned the previous week. Imagine it like a visa gift card. It's simply a blue card with the company name "Darden" written in white across the length of the card with the visa stamp in the corner). I explain this to her (rather I try to explain this to her). "This isn't your last name!" She says angrily. "Correct. 'Darden' is not my name. It is the company for which I work." She says she can't accept cards without names. (Now, first of all I've worked for this company for 4 years. For 4 years, I've used this card everywhere: grocery stores, gas stations, movie theaters, dept stores, restaurants; you name it, I've used it. However, I actually understand if this is their policy. I wouldn't argue, EXCEPT I already bought the damn pants on that card and now I need to return them and they need the card I used to purchase them). She says she will need her manger's approval. The manager shows up and my helpful cashier leans over to her and completely appalled says, "She wants to use this card and this isn't even HER last name!" I say, "Again, 'Darden' is the company I work for, not anyone's last name." (And after all who has a card with their last name written in swirly font across the whole background of the card instead of embossed at the bottom?) Anyway, the manager explains they don't take cards without names on them. I ask, "Then I couldn't use a visa gift card?" "Right." I say, "Well, as silly as I think that is, I understand if that's your policy. However, I'm not trying to use this card to purchase anything. I've already purchased these pants, in this store, with this card, and now I need to return them. The tags are on, I have my receipt and the card on which they were purchased, and it's within 30 days. So this is not the time to tell me you don't accept this card. It was already accepted at the time of purchase." The manager finally swipes the card to finalize the return and tells me "for future reference" I couldn't use that card here again. Don't you worry. I won't be shopping here anytime in the future. read more
