I don't shop here a lot but when I do I usually have pretty good luck. I did buy a pair of capris a couple days ago and the cashier was very pleasant. They didn't fit well so I returned them with a receipt and tags and the lady that helped me was not so pleasant. She was clearly annoyed I was returning them even though I had my receipt and only had them for two days. I probably will shop here even less, I don't need an attitude. read more

Old school small town non-chain (as far as I know) department store. The tiny town I grew up in had something similar. Locals owned it, locals worked there and they stocked things they knew were needed and appreciated in the community. McCaulou's is that kind of place. They don't throw a wide selection of brands typically, but they cover the basics pretty well with well selected quality brands. I can't say I come here often, but they've met my needs when I have. I appreciate that, and like to support local businesses. I see a few people give low ratings here... but I'm guessing it's an expectations thing. They expect a Walmart... or a Target... or something similar. That isn't what McCaulou's is... McCaulou's doesn't even pretend to be one of those stores. Seriously, if you want Walmart, go to Walmart. It's that simple. I came here because another shop on the other side of the freeway closed earlier than I expected (5PM vs 5:30PM as listed in Yelp). I needed new shoes, I don't have many days off these days, and I had planned to get some shoes. The other shop (which I do love and have bought several pairs of shoes and socks there) didn't work out, so I came here. They didn't have the brand I was looking for (Keen) but they did have another quality brand that was very similar (Merrell)... they had the size I needed... so mission accomplished! The Merrell's have Vibram soles which is probably an upgrade over the Keen soles, but time will tell. read more

They even offer free wrapping services and a good card selection to top off a nice gift. There is something for every price point as well as a wide variety of items to satisfy even the choosiest of personal tastes. We dropped in after brunch at Nancy's. Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the goods on offer. Brands that I didn't know. Most pieces were marked down. My friend felt the prices reflected the quality, and she bought a lot. I noted a lot of nice, stylish items that I had not seen anywhere else. Plenty of sales staff who always offered to help. I've visited this store twice in a year. It reminds me of the detail in retail stores in the 80's. You can definitely tell that it is local owned. The brands and selections offered have been well thought out for the clientele. There are a clothing items that seem a little expensive but not too far out of reach. Their markdowns are very reasonable. Beautiful tops and fine gauge knits. Nice resort wear. The second time that I visited was to purchase resort wear and they did not disappoint. I would suggest revamping the plus sized line, there were way too many floral prints and polyester. It gave off frump Queen, otherwise the Miss department was awesome. read more

They gift wrap, have a good makeup counter, upscale scents etc. Only one negative, I'm not a fan of the early old lady, floral polyester thing. That section could use an update. Department stores seem to be going the way of the dinosaur. This little compact department store is located right in Auburn not far from I 80. It is stocked with a bit of everything. The merchandise is of quality and is beautifully displayed, on par with Macy's. They have a shoe department. I noticed they carry women's Sketchers, Hunter, Clarks, Crocs, Saucony to name a few. They carry a bunch of styles- dressy heels, casual sandals, tennies, etc.. They had men's and children's shoes also. Plus they have a men's clothing section, women's clothing, lingerie, young juniors, children's, and accessories. The couple of times that I have shopped here...the staff was awesome. They all were eager to assist without being aggressive or intrusive. read more

This store is wonderful! I was so sad to see it gone in Napa. But so happy to have found it in Auburn California!! They actually have people who are there to help you, and plenty of them. it's so nice to ask a person a question and they know and help you. They don't have scanners, they actually have a cash register and input the info in by hand. If something is on sale, it's marked in red ink on the tag the real sale price. Which means a human had to do the job. They have everything in this store. A great shoe dept. baby, home, makeup, kids, mens, jewelry. Something for everyone. A few months ago, I stopped in to buy a dress shirt. I was going into the City and needed a nice shirt for going out to dinner. While I was disappointed the inventory was so small for dress shirts, I was very pleased with the excellent customer service I got. The sales clerk was very helpful and pointed me to a nice dress shirt in basic gray. And, I am happy to say, I found a tie that went well with the shirt. The shirt was reasonably priced. Yet I hope that whoever orders the inventory for the men's department, will eventually have more selection of shirts and slacks for occasions other than being a tourist on vacation. But then again, maybe that is what our high tech culture has become, a large group of spectators and leisurely visitors, not doing much else. read more

THE MANAGEMENT AT THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS SOME OF THE WORST IVE EVER SEEN. Love their sales floor staff, but man, those higher ups... they're rude, callous, and insensitive. I heard this short haired red headed "Karen" speak badly about one of her staff members appearance, loud enough that I, as a customer, could hear it, while just trying to buy something fun. SERIOUSLY folks....HOW DOES THIS PATHETIC EXCUSE OF A DEPARTMENT STORE REMAIN OPEN??? Terrible availability of sizes, (especially shoes, they mark the price stickers what one, two or three sizes they have available). Clothing items that are available are SERIOUSLY OVER PRICED, unless they're on sale! The rare times that I happen to be in that shopping center, and have a little time to burn, I'll drop in to browse. There have NEVER BEEN MORE THAN THREE OTHERS CUSTOMERS IN THE STORE. Most employees hiding in the back room chatting. Might be just as good that way.....when they used to actually have employees on the floor, if they weren't visiting with each other they would follow you around like private investigators, treating you like a criminal!!? They have a "Now Hiring" sign up permanently. Spent over an hour shopping.......NOT ONE TIME was I asked if I might need some assistance. Manager speed walking around the store with glazed over look, as though she's doing something urgently important. A woman FINALLY came from the back room......while passing me by, asked if I needed help. When I replied yes that I was trying to find an employee to ring me up......she keeps walking telling me, "huh, I don't know I'm was in the back"!!!!!!! Honestly, WHAT A WASTE OF REAL ESTATE!!!!! Never shop at this store unless you pay cash ......my daughter bought me some slippers on her credit card for Christmas and used her visa and they did not fit .....so I tried to return them and because I did not have her card with me they would only give me store credit and I did not see anything I wanted in this store ......I took back something at Macys that my son had put on his card and they gave me cash .....I think this is a rotten policy and I will never shop at that store again ..... read more

Hooray, the Bay Area department store chain has opened a new store in the building formerly occupied by Gottschalk's. It even lays out like its predecessor, except the men's department is much larger (due to their not having a Housewares department). This store carries a broad spectrum of cosmetics and skin care products, including Estee Lauder. One thing I noticed right away, is the staff is not as geriatric as the previous occupants of this building. We used to dread going to Gottschalks, but this store seems more inviting without the old biddies. Great selection and reasonable pricing when compared to Macy's. read more

I love that it reminds me of how stores used to be. I used to work at a Bullock's , Emporium and Nordstroms and they would take the time to do displays and and set everything up neat and tidy. I love all the sections are clearly marked and they have complementary gift wrapping like all stores used to have. Nowadays everything is thrown on racks. Swimsuits hanging with winter coats. Surprised they have such great quality items too. I tried getting a Carhart jacket this winter at multiple stores and ended up Ordering through tractor supply which was three weeks and they had some on the floor! I ordered converse Chucks for my daughter online but walked in to see they had them on display there! My aunt is in her 80's and always loved Lanz pj's that are so hard to find for Christmas and they had them. My mother loves Newberger pj's which they had too and Pendleton and Tommy Bahama for my dad. Also surprised they had hosiery. No one ever carry's hose anymore. They are a real gem find. Hope they continue on for many years. read more

Be careful shopping here tried to return Christmas sweatshirt that I had purchased for my wife the neck was too tight had receipts but they would not allow return. They never mentioned that there were no returns on this item. You don't by somebody clothing for Christmas and hope that it fits they should allow exchange at the very least. read more

If I could leave 0 stars, I would. Even with a medical exemption masks are required, which brings me to the entire issue. My 1st time into this store and within 3 minutes I was accosted by an employee. I calmly and nicely stated that I couldn't wear a mask for medical reasons, and she proceeded to tell me "that doesn't matter". Yes, yes it does matter. I said "ok I'll leave" and she proceeds to say "okay that sounds great!" No actually, it sounds like discrimination and it is NOT OKAY. I called the manager to document my encounter and let the store know that their behavior was unacceptable. Julie (manager) was rude, aggressive and tried to talk over me the entire time. I was called "abusive" for questioning why an old lady thought that behavior was acceptable. I will be calling the corporate office in the A.M. to let them know about both Julie's behavior and the encounter I had. The store caters to basically 60+ gals. It's an old department store ran by old ladies (65+), who are rude as hell. No greeting, no asking if we need help finding anything, no mention of sales or specials. There was nothing but cold, frosty, creepy vibes from every single employee there. The experience I had here left such a bad taste in my mouth that I will be cautioning family and friends against ever shopping here. I truly cannot believe how awful these women were! read more

I had never heard of this store but needed to return a gift that was purchased there. I googled it to see what kind of store it is and saw all the negative reviews. So when I went there, I was expecting the worst, but it was a nice shopping experience. The return was done Just like every other store does it, so I guess they upgraded their system, and both salespeople I interacted with were very nice to me and to the other customers. read more

This is an odd store. They definitely have quarks. This store offers some conveniences. I like going there for baby gifts or other quick gifts when I need something in a hurry. I also like the free gift wrap although some of the designs need brought into the 21st century. They have very outdated technology and processes. Like writing numbers on tags and calling a manager for returns. Some of the staff need customer service training. They also need to be taught how to watch for theft in an indiscriminate way rather than staring or following customers. I also think part of the problem is that they don't want customers taking things out of one department into another. This really freaks the sales people out. I carried a scarf into the shoe section and it was like a silent alarm went off. I had the shoe people and the scarf/purse people on my tail! Several asked me what I was doing and suggested I pay in one department before leaving for another. Really??? I didn't and said no, I want to pay all together. This store has some nice things and some high prices. I have never seen a coupon for this store. If they had coupons, you would most likely have to have 1or2 managers approve it and then fill out paperwork. I think this store would be a bit better if it weren't so antiquated. They need a better buyer. Some of the women's clothes are geared towards old ladies. Remember, 50 is the new 40. But this stores sees everyone as 80. Teens would probably curl up and shrivel like the witch on a Wizard of Oz if they were forced to shop here. Having a department store geared towards adults is fine but just take it up a notch PLEASE. And one other thing. I was shopping late one evening and they locked me in 5 minutes before closing. Yes doors were locked at 655 pm. This place is so afraid they may have to stay late they actually lock the doors before closing. And the woman who had to let me out was not very pleasant. You could tell I was definitely an inconvenience. Anyway, I don't want to see them go out of business. We really need a department store that sells clothing besides Target and second hand places or Kmart ugh. read more

I was there and the associate lady Sandy had made a mistake ringing up the customer in front of me. Sandy rung the customer credit card incorrectly,she realized she had made a mistake, told that customer what she had done,then called for a manager to help her out. One of the managers named Marina came up, started rolling her eyes about the mistake and demeaned Sandy in front if customers. Then she argued with the customer in front of me about the use of "dinosaur age cash register" saying something like "I've worked here for many years and it's not a problem" and kept arguing with the customer in front of me. Marina was very rude very rude I will never go in that store again ever you need to fire that lady- no one in management should EVER treat customers and sales people like that- Marena is a cancer in that company and needs to be gone, if that business wants to make money. read more

I'll start with a little bit of positive here, and quickly move on to my issue. Okay, the store is clean- lots of nice name brands. The employees are very willing to help. But, can someone please turn down the frickin music. The music is different and blasting in every department. How can anyone concentrate on what they are looking for. When I spoke with employees and managers about it, they too are sick of it. They suggested I write a letter to the owner. But, they said "good luck they won't listen." I love this place! It still has the feel of the old Gottschalks, which the building once housed. It's a small department store but has a good selection. I usually only make it up there once a year around Christmas time (I went today) and I love all their different gifty type items they have. They have unique stuff which I love. I only live about 25 mins from here but should make it a point to check out more than once a year. It kind of reminds me of a smaller scale Macy's. read more

Not sure where to begin. For starters (disclosure: this is an observation not a dig) this store is extremely popular for what appears to be the over 65+ club which makes it difficult for a younger, "shops with a purpose" kind of person like myself. I started off in the purse department, hmmm....not my kind of selection, but if you're into the "just off the bus from Dallas painted cat purse with bling, look no further! (That was a dig) I walked over to the beauty and cosmetic department. They have several stacked center tables with perfume gift boxes, went through about 15 of them, NO PRICES....that makes browsing difficult; especially when you might've considered buying something unintended based off of a good deal. I walk through women's clothing....EXPENSIVE! Now; the clothes have prices on them...I found a decently priced Colombia down vest marked from $60 on sale for $39.99, they only have smalls left in "normal" colors, but did have a larger selection of fuchsias and aquamarine...kept walking... Now mind you, I have strolled through 4 departments at this point; I have yet to be greeted by anyone! I end up at their "Miss Me" jean collection. The average price at this store for a pair of jeans is over $100, there is ONE rack where they actually hang them up so you can see the sizes, only all the ones on that rack are super tiny. So now I have to go through the two tables of about 100 plus pairs of folded jeans to try and find my size; this looks something like this....walk up to jean table, set down purse, dig, dig, dig, table is to short, drop to knees, and dig and dig, trying to be polite and not totally mess up the stacks...During this process a sales clerk walks by me and actually STEPS OVER ME ON THE FLOOR, never offered to find something for me, or welcome me. Allrighty...walk to other side of jean table, repeat above process.....can't seem to find me size. I get off the floor and stand in front of the jean table and google what size Miss me Jeans stop at, (sales person walks by again...same blank stare and no help) I see that Miss Me jeans go up to 34 this is from missme.com I flag down the soooo polite and approachable sales lady and ask her if they have my size, she tells me they stop carrying over size 30...thanks...there was 20 minutes of my life sucked away. I proceed back to the beauty department, I need a Lancome item. Walk around Lancome counter, no one is home, walk to Clinique, same thing...Estee Lauder...nobody...FINALLY I see a head pop up from behind the fragrance counter, she asks me if she can help me find something, I replied, "Yes, I need a dual-finish compact in Matte Buff" She starts laughing. ***Pause*** I said, "excuse me?" She begins to explain to me how she doesn't work in beauty and has no clue what I'm talking about, I point to what I need inside the case, she hands it to me and asks if there is anything else I need. "Why yes, I am interested in this fragrance gift set"...Start walking 6 feet over to display, she freaks! "You have to give me that makeup back! You can't walk away from this counter with that..." O...K....I hand the compact back, walk over to the gift set, ask her how much it is...she has to scan it to tell me, I ask her how the price compares to just the single bottle of perfume in the case, again no price...I ask her why they don't keep prices on their fragrance items, she tells me they never do. Whatever McCalous. I walk back 6 feet to purchase my compact, ask if they have a sample of their mascara, she tells me they don't have samples of any of their makeup. Too bad Roseville Galaria is 20 miles away...can't say I will return to this store again. read more

I'm thrilled McCaulous took over the old Gottschalks and very happy to see some familiar faces from McCaulous. I love the merchandise they carry, but I mainly come in for cosmetics. Thank goodness they still have decent cosmetics counters. The day I came in I needed a few things for my daughter and several Lancome items. I found what looked like a 20ish punk rocker with raccoon eyes attending the makeup counter. Really? hmmmm, no thank you! A familiar face in another dept told me my favorite Lancome lady would be in the next day. I left the store and returned the next day. I am an older woman (40s) with "mature" skin. Seriously, I will never understand why cosmetic companies use young girls/women to sell face creams for women over 30. WHYYYYY would I take advice or want to buy cosmetics from a kid who is barely out of highschool???? I want to buy my cosmetics from a woman who can relate to and understand my skin issues. I DON'T care how much training (Miss 20something) has had!!!! I want someone with experience! Msg to Department stores: Is it not your goal to make the most profit possible??? I bought the cutest pair if Toms for my 8 yr. old daughter and after 2 days of wearing the rubber sole on the toe part of the shoe came unglued. I took the shoes back to the store only to find the manager extremely rude! She stated that Toms are not school shoes, they are only ment for wearing indoors or in her words "a Sunday shoe". Who buys $38 shoes to wear indoors?? My advice do not buy Toms from this store, Nordstroms has the same prices with higher standards of management and customer service. read more

Not too much to say about this place...its a dept store ...but its convenient and sometimes fills the bill for the quick need. One thing that I will say that I didn't like was the fitting room attendant! Extremely awkward! Stands right in the middle of the hallway...stops you from going into a fitting room...which fine...whatever...and then checks to see how many garments you have...and then the icing on the cupcake was that she then takes a colored hair tie and hangs it on your door handle once she lets you in the room. Very bizaare how all of that went. Then when you come out of the room...she is standing right there and awkwardly asking if anything worked out for you. Came in on a Friday evening looking for a dress to wear the following day. The clothing in the women's dept resembles something that your grandmother would wear on a cruise. If you enjoy bright, jewel colored & bedazzled garments, this place is right up your alley. Wandered the store for at least 30 minutes, and not a single person working there asked if they could be of assistance. Employees were chatting & laughing in groups, some were on personal calls at the register, and not one of them even bothered making eye contact. I would have gladly spent a few hundred bucks in that store but evidently it's not about the money there. I think it's great they pay their employees NOT to help their customers. Whatever works. I was anxious to have a department store in Auburn again, and I never liked Gottscalks with their old lady clothes. I was disappointed to see it is layed out the very same, the same bad taste came to me as I was sure it is probably filled with polyester pants again! I walked out, never bothering to look. I spoke to many of my friends they all say it is too much like Gottschalks and will continue to go down the hill. I realize Auburn is a retirement community but there are some of us under 80. I was aghast when I went into the store, and ONE girl was working in the shoe dept., so I told her I was there when it was empty so I can get some help as I'm disabled. One person asked a question, then was gone. She only had me to help, and she didn't have a clue the way it used to be when you go out and buy shoes.Especially when they charge more to carry popular ones! So since I had no help to see HOW the shoes fit, I left in quite a rush trying to keep my temper. I don't think I will EVER be back there! I'd rather fight traffic at Galleria! read more

I am sometimes very happy to have a small department store in town. On Thursday I was able to go grab two sizes of Keen sandals for my three year old great-niece who was visiting. We kept the larger size which fit her, and on Saturday I returned the smaller size 10, which incidentally had been out as the store model on Thursday. I did not look at the pairs of shoes before taking them home. During the return, the cashier has a second person come to sign off on the return, and this person made the statement to me, "We wouldn't let these go out in this condition," and had the other employee spend time wiping off one of the shoes. Since only one shoe got tried on by my niece and then was put back in the box, you obviously did let them go out to me in that condition and an employee may have let someone else return them previously in a condition you weren't happy with. I personally wasn't happy having you try and insinuate that your store problem had anything to do with me. If you want increase the number of people that want to shop in your store, some more employee training might help. read more
