This is a place to get good sandwiches. The grilled chicken, or even the basic ham and cheese is delicious. It's obvious bread and meat quality is high. Is it a little expensive? Yes but so is everywhere right now. Go visit this one at University Mall. The flavor factor is high. Comfortable for lunch especially. They have such a large menu. It's impressive all on its own. I was happily surprised at McAlisters by a tasty southwestern GF sandwich that stood up to the "pick it up and put it back down" test. I hadn't heard about this place until I was in Virginia doing some work in the area. I guess there aren't any locations in Maryland. Well, I'm glad I decided to give this restaurant a try. I love that I could order soup, sandwiches and salads. The variety on the menu is very appealing. On my first visit, I ordered a baked potato with a cup of soup. The food was okay for a deli next to a college, but the packaging for such a large order made it so difficult to retrieve our individual orders. Today when I walked in to order lunch there was a sign that said they were understaffed and only taking online orders. While I was trying to navigate the order online page I had the pleasure of listen to a man, who seemed to be a franchise owner or manager, behind the POS counter telling the other employee that he just got off the phone with a woman who was lacking basic intelligence asking for directions to their store and that he gave her the address but he couldn't help her anymore because she wanted a description of where they were located and he didn't have time for that. Meanwhile, I'm still working on ordering on the website and customers are walking in, rolling their eyes at the sign and walking out. My wife and I have now given this place three tries and we're never going back. The first two times were probably a year or two ago and the food just wasn't great, I would have probably given them 2.5 stars at the time but today we decided to give them one last try. Unfortunately it didn't go well, we were the only ones there and we waited 7-10 minutes to order at the register and nobody even attempted to help us. The menu is simple and straightforward. I ordered the Italian with no tomato and mac & cheese for the side. Order came out quick, and was correct. Bread was very fresh, meat was fresh and there was plenty of it. The side was tasty and a perfect compliment to the sandwich. The only bad part of this shop is their location. It's in downtown Fairfax and to get there there are 100000000000 red lights that aren't timed and police around every corner. We often visit University shopping area because it's close to home. When they renovated this strip mall the addition of a fresh new deli was exciting. The reviews were good. After happy hour near by, we wanted to do take out and deli sandwiches fit the belly craving. When we walked into the place, the staff was welcoming. The menu was overwhelming so we needed some time to make our decision. A few customers explained the "choose 2" option. Basically you can select 2 food items and get half portions of that selection. I went with "spud" aka a baked potatoe and then half of a "craft " my own deli sandwich(pastrami). The potatoe was a small potatoe with butter and sour cream on the side(comes with all their spuds). I had them add the cheddar. That was pretty good and filled me up BECAUSE the half pastrami was seriously a sad sad sandwich. I selected the baguette(you can choose your bread). The bread was the same size as hubby's full size sandwich BUT they seriously teased me with 1.5 slices of pastrami. I'm not understanding why I just didn't get a half sandwich with the proper proportioned amount of meat. I basically took one side of bread and cut it in half and tried to stack my meat so looked like a decent sandwich. With other delis nearby(Pot Belly, Subway, Jersey Mikes), I probably won't return. The price point of $7-$8 for 1.5 slices and a small potatoe just isn't worth it. The staff was super friendly and the restaurant was very clean. There is a large menu. Quality suffers. read more

This store has ZERO knowledge of customer service. Their app/ system makes frequent mistakes about orders with promotions but the managers don't bother to exercise some authority to honor customers in return of major inconveniences. It doesn't matter if you receive confirmation emails. You arrive at the store to find that their system didn't let the order go through (again despite sending out confirmation email). When you ask the manager to honor the order because it's their fault, they don't seem to be bothered and resist assisting the customer. They'd rather lose a customer than use their discretion to fix an issue from their side. When you can't fix a problem just because "the system doesn't allow" you, then you're living in the middle ages and you will drive your business to the ground. I love McAlister's Deli. I never see myself going there and not getting their "take 2" deal. Or whatever it's called. You have to get half a spud to be part of the deal. The spuds here are insane. It is so much food and still considered a "half". The chicken bacon ranch is my favorite spud. Then for the other half of the deal I usually pay the little extra to get a big, high priced ticket item. Like the French dip, or the memphian, or the King's Club. I am a fan on McAlister's. I am visiting the area and I was in the mood for it, traveled 40 minutes out of my way, just to be ignored by a couple employees. I think she had to be a manager to have that attitude, but she greeted everyone but us. Felt kind of discriminated in all honesty. My boyfriend kept trying to be nice and converse and she was just not having it. So if you love McAlister's and don't mind being discriminated this is the place for you! Food is good like all McAlisters and the cashier who took our order was nice. You can't blame it on being busy because we were the only ones there for a while. We've been regulars for quite some time and just experienced one of the rudest interactions we've had to date at a restaurant. The register froze as we were checking out. The manager came over and said "did you scan it before she said ready?" I replied, "I have no idea" (am I supposed to have knowledge of this?). She stormed off with clear disdain for us, made negative comments under her breath, and would not look at us again. I have no idea what was going through her head. I have never had close to that negative experience before, especially by the manger of an establishment . We are easy-going people coming in for a quick lunch. We left in total dismay without our food as it became clear to us we were no longer welcome. As we left, she said "okay, cancel their order." Not another look or word from her. I really hope her day gets better. There is no situation that anyone should be treated that way. Even worse, she conducted this inappropriate behavior in front of her employees, thereby setting a new standard of negative customer service for them. read more

The experience I just had @ the Fairfax location was disgusting. This was not the first problem at this restaurant but it will be my last. The first problem was that I ordered a sandwich for my husband while I was at lunch with my friend. I brought it home but my husband had forgotten I was bringing it and had dinner ready when I got home ( it was a marathon catching up with my best friend so wee were there for a long time after lunch. The next day husband bit into the sandwich for his lunch. Instead of the American cheeses that came with the sandwich they had ignored my request for cheddar and instead filled the club with pepper jack. My husband hurled and couldn't eat it. I can't tolerate pepper jack either. So I called the restaurant and the OWNER SAID "since it was the next day there was nothing she could do to fix it. If I'd called before midnight (they close @ 5 or 6 PM) I could have gotten a refund. But they offered nothing. I filed a complaint with my former credit card Capital One and they refused to do anything either so I cancelled my card and decided to move our monthly lunches to Panera. But today I got a text announcing Buy 1 get 1 free, National Sandwich day, sandwiches. I clicked the link to read about the promo and saw NO RESTRICTIONS so my husband & I went to Lunch there. Unfortunately what happened was beyond despicable. I normally order salad so I was a sandwich virgin. I ordered the 12" French Dip & he ordered the King Club. After placing the order I got the total which DID NOT reflect the cheaper sandwich being taken off. I mentioned the text and the link so the girl said that the exceptions were the 2 sandwiches we ordered. So I said well then cancel the order and we'll comply with the exceptions that WERE NOT mentioned on the text nor the promo. The manager came over and tried to make us feel bad by telling us that she'd have to throw out the already prepared food if we didn't stick to our original order. To which I replied that no the best option was for them to honor the promo. Which they refused. Then we reordered but I chose a sandwich that came with a FREE SIDE. Since I was a sandwich virgin I didn't know what those choices were. The manager walked away without saying anything and the clerk came back and described the difference between the side salad & the Tomato & Cucumber salad. She did NOT mention that one was FREE & one had an up-charge so I unknowingly ordered the one with the upcharge as the Tomato & Cucumbers were NOT IN FACT A SALAD at all just sliced Tomatoes & cucumbers. We got our food and husband took the receipt. As we were picking up to leave I picked up the receipt and saw that I was charged for my FREE salad. I went to get it corrected. there were 2 clercks doing NOTHING so I asked one then the other to get the manager. They both continued to do NOTHING. So I stepped to the other side of the counter and saw the manager helping to get a pick up order ready. I waited til she was finished and showed her that I was charged for my FREE SIDE SALAD. She left without saying anything. Another woman showed up and announced she was the owner si I repeated myself. She LOUDLY told me the sign "CLEARLY" said there was an upcharge. I told her to point to it. She took off her reading glasses and pointed to fine print I couldn't read with or without my reading glasses. She yelled as she started to laugh that if I gave her back the salad she'd refund my money. I was incensed that she obviously couldn't read the sign any better than I could and she had the audacity to request that I puke up the salad. So I decided to humor her and brought my index finger up to my mouth. She jumped back aghast and yelled even louder for me to leave the restaurant. I looked at her and said it was YOUR idea that I give back the salad would you rather I wait until my body poops it out. But then I decided I wouldn't put up with any more Abuse from them. I know that the world doesn't make it easy for people that need reading glasses menus on walls are the worst. Even with squinting the fine print is impossible to read but usually it's cal court or other non essential info. But in this case it is a DELIBERATE SET UP TO STEAL MONEY AND ABUSE ELDERS WHO CANT READ THAT FINE PRINT. THE DISRESPECT FROM THE WORKERS WHO IGNORED ME OR WALKED OFF WITHOUT SPEAKING AND THE OWNER ASKING FOR ME TO RETURN MY SALAD AND GETTING UPSET WHEN I MOTIONED TO DO JUST THAT ARE FURTHER EVIDENCE OF CUSTOMER ABUSE. I am 65 years old so not ancient but in no way does anyone deserve what got dishes out today. Just consider yourself warned. They don't actually try to help customers navigate their menu, they advertise a promo and then add exception on the fly, and expect customers to take the abuse / disrespect they including the owner dish out. There are many other places to eat so please if you read this go to a different restaurant or a different location!! read more
