Me and my wife in the past 2 weeks have eaten at Mcallisters deli 4 times with 3 of them being in TN. We have noticed that the Mcallisters in VA have significantly smaller portions. Same prices, just smaller portions. The one in our home town (of Front Royal) being and offender of the smaller portions has since gone out of business. Just food for thought. Invited a friend to this deli on Sunday for lunch. It was a warm day and we were both hungry. The menu looked great and we placed our orders. Food arrived promptly. I ordered an avocado chicken salad and my friend ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, The salad looked nice but it was less than savory. It was unfortunate because the salad was bland. My friend's grilled cheese sandwich was burned around the edges; she did not ask to have it redone but she did not enjoy it. Wait staff was pleasant and my friend enjoyed the lemonade refill. I was very disappointed with my recent visit to this McAlister's. First, even though I ordered my veggie spud with no peppers, it came out with peppers on it. I was overcharged for my pick 2 (as two separate meals), and the manager was not apologetic and very helpful when issuing my partial refund. My chicken sandwich was partially cold as well... which was very gross. They do have a nice seating setup inside and out, but they are lacking in the food and service department. Ordering seems pretty easy if you have the App. My first time, seems like normal ordering at the counter as well. It's definitely a lot faster if you order on the app for dine in or carryout. The first time I went here it was an excellent experience. This time the manager rang me up and I asked for a sandwich with no lettuce tomato mayonnaise mustard. And I ask if the bacon could be well done. Well, the bacon was not well done. When I went up for a refill, the same girl who's tag said manager I handed her my cup and said sweet tea. This is a place to get good sandwiches. The grilled chicken, or even the basic ham and cheese is delicious. It's obvious bread and meat quality is high. Is it a little expensive? Yes but so is everywhere right now. Go visit this one at University Mall. The flavor factor is high. Comfortable for lunch especially. They have such a large menu. It's impressive all on its own. Gluten free sandwiches usually leave something to be desired. We have all been there... you want a sandwich but end up with a crumbled mess that lacks flavor or excitement. I was happily surprised at McAlisters by a tasty southwestern GF sandwich that stood up to the "pick it up and put it back down" test. The option to do 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 salad was also a nice treat. Service was efficient on a Sunday afternoon, but the price was higher than desired. I hadn't heard about this place until I was in Virginia doing some work in the area. I guess there aren't any locations in Maryland. Well, I'm glad I decided to give this restaurant a try. I love that I could order soup, sandwiches and salads. The variety on the menu is very appealing. On my first visit, I ordered a baked potato with a cup of soup. I should've paid more attention to the menu because when I received my baked potato, it was huge! I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I felt full for most of the day afterwards. It's meh. Service was ok. Nothing to brag or complain about. Food is far, far, far from the level that McAlister 's used to deliver. Ordered my sandwich without mustard and someone didn't read or pay attention because it had mustard. I intensely dislike mustard so that really ruined it for me. I'm writing this review on behalf of my work office. We ordered about 20 items and a lot of them were pick-2 items. The food was okay for a deli next to a college, but the packaging for such a large order made it so difficult to retrieve our individual orders. One of my coworker's soup and salad was split and mixed up with another sandwich order and we had to spend 20-30 minutes going through each one and correcting it. Unprofessional, unfriendly management... no counter service & the bread is always stale. This business likely survives off of mediocre catering for the college. Today when I walked in to order lunch there was a sign that said they were understaffed and only taking online orders. (Only open 10-4 daily... how do you have trouble staffing a restaurant for 6 hours a day??) While I was trying to navigate the order online page I had the pleasure of listen to a man, who seemed to be a franchise owner or manager, behind the POS counter telling the other employee that he just got off the phone with a woman who was lacking basic intelligence asking for directions to their store and that he gave her the address but he couldn't help her anymore because she wanted a description of where they were located and he didn't have time for that. I was in Fairfax buying shoes at Red Wing. I was thinking a sandwich, italian or roast beef. The GPS said McAlister's deli was 2.1 miles away. I have never been to this place. The menu is simple and straightforward. I ordered the Italian with no tomato and mac & cheese for the side. Order came out quick, and was correct. Bread was very fresh, meat was fresh and there was plenty of it. The side was tasty and a perfect compliment to the sandwich. The only bad part of this shop is their location. It's in downtown Fairfax and to get there there are 100000000000 red lights that aren't timed and police around every corner. If you go to the movies I would recommend these folks for a quick bite. read more

My wife and I have now given this place three tries and we're never going back. The first two times were probably a year or two ago and the food just wasn't great, I would have probably given them 2.5 stars at the time but today we decided to give them one last try. Unfortunately it didn't go well, we were the only ones there and we waited 7-10 minutes to order at the register and nobody even attempted to help us. We often visit University shopping area because it's close to home. When they renovated this strip mall the addition of a fresh new deli was exciting. The reviews were good. After happy hour near by, we wanted to do take out and deli sandwiches fit the belly craving. When we walked into the place, the staff was welcoming. The menu was overwhelming so we needed some time to make our decision. A few customers explained the "choose 2" option. Basically you can select 2 food items and get half portions of that selection. I went with "spud" aka a baked potatoe and then half of a "craft " my own deli sandwich(pastrami). The potatoe was a small potatoe with butter and sour cream on the side(comes with all their spuds). I had them add the cheddar. That was pretty good and filled me up BECAUSE the half pastrami was seriously a sad sad sandwich. I selected the baguette(you can choose your bread). The bread was the same size as hubby's full size sandwich BUT they seriously teased me with 1.5 slices of pastrami. I'm not understanding why I just didn't get a half sandwich with the proper proportioned amount of meat. I basically took one side of bread and cut it in half and tried to stack my meat so looked like a decent sandwich. With other delis nearby(Pot Belly, Subway, Jersey Mikes), I probably won't return. The price point of $7-$8 for 1.5 slices and a small potatoe just isn't worth it. The staff was super friendly and the restaurant was very clean. There is a large menu. Quality suffers. read more

I love McAlister's Deli. I never see myself going there and not getting their "take 2" deal. Or whatever it's called. You have to get half a spud to be part of the deal. The spuds here are insane. It is so much food and still considered a "half". The chicken bacon ranch is my favorite spud. Then for the other half of the deal I usually pay the little extra to get a big, high priced ticket item. Like the French dip, or the memphian, or the King's Club. All three sandwiches are worth your attention. It's a great deal and a great lunch. Oh and their tea is on point too. The same quality as a chick fil a tea. Enjoy! read more

Very tasty sandwiches, their brownies and broccoli soup are also to die for. I order from this place all of the time. Don't get me wrong, I love it. I love it more than life itself, but they need to use bigger bread. It's a challenge trying to finish one of their sandwiches without taking a bite and all of the meat falling to one side. This store has ZERO knowledge of customer service. Their app/ system makes frequent mistakes about orders with promotions but the managers don't bother to exercise some authority to honor customers in return of major inconveniences. It doesn't matter if you receive confirmation emails. You arrive at the store to find that their system didn't let the order go through (again despite sending out confirmation email). When you ask the manager to honor the order because it's their fault, they don't seem to be bothered and resist assisting the customer. They'd rather lose a customer than use their discretion to fix an issue from their side. When you can't fix a problem just because "the system doesn't allow" you, then you're living in the middle ages and you will drive your business to the ground. I am a fan on McAlister's. I am visiting the area and I was in the mood for it, traveled 40 minutes out of my way, just to be ignored by a couple employees. I think she had to be a manager to have that attitude, but she greeted everyone but us. Felt kind of discriminated in all honesty. My boyfriend kept trying to be nice and converse and she was just not having it. So if you love McAlister's and don't mind being discriminated this is the place for you! Food is good like all McAlisters and the cashier who took our order was nice. You can't blame it on being busy because we were the only ones there for a while. They probably have not seen people of color for awhile because that's how the cooks were looking at us. Can't wait to go back to my original McAlisters in Texas. read more

We've been regulars for quite some time and just experienced one of the rudest interactions we've had to date at a restaurant. The register froze as we were checking out. The manager came over and said "did you scan it before she said ready?" I replied, "I have no idea" (am I supposed to have knowledge of this?). She stormed off with clear disdain for us, made negative comments under her breath, and would not look at us again. I have no idea what was going through her head. I have never had close to that negative experience before, especially by the manger of an establishment . We are easy-going people coming in for a quick lunch. We left in total dismay without our food as it became clear to us we were no longer welcome. As we left, she said "okay, cancel their order." Not another look or word from her. I really hope her day gets better. There is no situation that anyone should be treated that way. Even worse, she conducted this inappropriate behavior in front of her employees, thereby setting a new standard of negative customer service for them. read more
