An family owned and executed business that has been around for 45years. This place is delicious and a new favorite of ours for all sandwiches! The staff was very friendly and very helpful immediately upon entering. They sensed it was our first time and assisted to make the decision more pleasant. The store was clean and there were plenty of seating available for a Friday lunch hour. The portions were hefty and fulfilling! Great sub shops seem few and far between in the area, and The Deli was just what I was looking for. Reminds me of the sub places I had in NJ. So many great things about it, starting with the bread. Sturdy to hold up to a lot of filling, but chewy. The meat is sliced thin and fresh. Even the 8" sub is a significant size. I went with The Madd Italian and my wife had the Super Smokey. First off I'm new here so I rely on Yelp to introduce me to the local gems. I was introduced to one such gem on my way home from work. The Deli sit near a Starbucks in an unassuming strip mall where I arrived after the business had closed. I called and spoke to Ro, who told me that he would make sandwiches for me although the actually close at 6:30, not 7 pm. When I get inside, I follow Ro's suggestion and ordered the 8" Super Deli sandwich and the 12" Mad Italian. Both sandwiches were on fresh hoagie rolls, with lots of fresh cuts of meat and veggies, served with dill pickles spears. Delicious subs! My husband and I were in the plaza and hungry and decided to stop by. We were very happy with that decision. I got a 12" Turkey & Provolone and he got a 12" Mad Italian. The subs were a good size with fresh ingredients and we enjoyed them! Was the bread freshly baked compared to some other sub shops? No, but it didn't affect my 5 star rating because they were still soft and the overall subs were delicious and they held up even when stuffed full! Prices were a bit on the higher side but not crazy compared to other sub shops and we felt it was worth it. The staff were courteous to us although they were clearly busy. The staff at The Deli are so kind and helped me with ordering as it was my first time there. My husband and I got two subs, which we split. We got a Madd Italian with lettuce, tomato, hot peppers, oil and vinegar and the New Yorker with mustard. We also ordered some of their mushroom and artichoke salad and some barbecue potato chips. Both subs were excellent and the pickles were great too. I really enjoyed the New Yorker as it had great coleslaw on it. If you grew up eating hoagies like me, I mean real Hoagies, I'm talking about like a New Jersey, New York authentic hoagie.. then this is the place for you. The ingredients are always fresh, the staff is always friendly and if you frequent this place like me and my family, then they know you by name. That's how you know they appreciate you spending your dollar at their business. And we know this is rare attitude at most establishments nowadays. I've said it before, but I will say it again we must support these small businesses that prepare amazing food. These restaurants become childhood favorites; like the deli is to me and my family. My family and I have been a customer to "the deli" in Herndon for 2 decades, but switched to this location when it open years ago...it's now our go to location. The deli Is truly is authenticity as it gets. The bread must be flown in or sent in from a NJ/NY bakery.. cause only north east wader (water) could make their roll taste so good. The cold cuts are freshly slice and the veggies are delightful. I recommend all the hoagies here, however our go to's are the Italian stallion, the Brooklyn and my old time favorite is the turkey/ provolone with everything. and don't forget to add the hot pepper and oil and vinegar.. speaking of oil and vinegar they need to bottle this family recipe. I'm so frustrated that I have lived in Fairfax for 4 years and just randomly discovered this place after going to Starbucks in Lee Plaza. Coming from New York there are tell tale signs of good deli sandwiches: (1) the place doesn't call itself NY anything (that's a schtick or gimmick and never a good sign); (2) they call the sandwich a submarine sandwich (like Italian families saying gravy for sauce); and (3) they call out specialty meats like Pastrami and not just ham, turkey, etc. After the delivery came the sandwich came in a submarine wrapper (old school nice touch), and the 12" sandwich feeds 2 people. The bread was the best sub bread I have seen below Pennsylvania. I am anxious to try more on the menu but I have to say- my wife and I both said 4/5. Way better than every other deli sandwich in NoVA that I have tried! read more
