I went there Friday night, June 12, 2009. I waited 30 minutes to get seated and then sat at the table for another 20 minutes and no one came by. I left and told the hostess that I would come back another time. Honestly, I don't think I will though. read more

This is really the only excellent easy to get to eatery to and from San Antonio if you take the Amtrak Texas Eagle route. I had their turkey sandwich! The best handpicked turkey deli meat ever! The house made kettle chips and dill pickle were a very nice touch to the sandwich! They have a wonderful pastry chef because their baked goods are excellent as well! I also bought a gluten-free chocolate cookie and a croissant cinnamon roll for tomorrow morning. This place has a great Zagat rating so I hope they never close this location. I was so elated to see that they were still here since the first time my husband tried their food three years ago which was over the top that time too! read more

I stand corrected. Several months ago I wrote a rather uncomplimentary review after Maynards changed the recipe for their steak tartar. Last night I decided to give them another try. I asked the manager if there was any chance that the kitchen would make the original steak tartar for me---and they did! It was as delicious as ever! I was so impressed that they would do that and I have now reinstated Maynards as one of my favorite restaurants. My apologies for being too quick to criticize. It is an excellent restaurant in both food and service. read more

Kitchen is fantastic but the service as amazingly bad as the food is good. This really is the best food in town. Our waiter failed to serve our wine on time with our food and then proceeded to poor the wine directly onto the table top splashing us and not even apologizing. To have this quality of food with such a low level of service is painful. We will return but will eat at the bar until the owners decide service is important. Trust all the reviews here, awesome food but obscenely bad service. But still eat here the kitchen is great. read more

My Pork Reuben was delicious but my husbands burger was cold and had an unusual flavor. I give them 1 star for service. Our meals came out separately which I hate; my husband waited an additional 5-10 min for his burger. Had to go to the bar to refill my tea. Waited a long time for someone to pick up our check. Very disappointing for such a quaint place!! read more

I don't know what to say. I frequent Maynards after work maybe once every week or two. Always love what I get... 5 stars! I guess I should have reviewed earlier with those positive experiences, but like in journalism, sometimes it's only the bad stuff that gets covered. My last two experiences were simply bad. The first was two weeks ago. I went in for happy hour. I had the burger for the first time ever. I ordered it medium. It came out well. The bartender 100% agreed instantly when I showed him and took it away. Unfortunately, the second one came out well too! By then I just ate it because I was hungry, and he comped one of my drinks. I can live with that, as long as it's just a fluke. But tonight was worse! I took my folks out for my father's 65th birthday. Both their entrees were good. I think they thoroughly enjoyed the food. My $36 NY Strip didn't come out medium as I had ordered. It was medium well bordering on well... and dry. The entire night was basically ruined from this point on. The new steak didn't come out for well over 25 minutes. Both parents were totally done with their food at that point as we sat waiting for mine. On the plus side, the steak comes out finally and is yummy and correct. However, the manager who brought the second steak felt the need to tell us the kitchen staff talked it over and determined the original steak was made correctly, but (in a condescending tone) he's sorry if I "feel" it wasn't and that they cooked this one less than medium to make me happy. All of us exchanged looks. I didn't "feel" anything. The first one wasn't medium... it wasn't a feeling... it was a fact. I know what a medium steak looks and tastes like. And I don't need attitude. Plus, the second steak was perfect and was definitely not medium rare... so his comment about it being cooked less than medium to please me like I was some idiot that actually wanted medium rare but didn't know it, struck a nerve. When a mistake happens at a nicer establishment like this, just make it right quickly. Don't take forever and then assign blame to the customer. We were all so annoyed that we left without any kind of birthday dessert and without smiles on our faces. read more

I am fairly new to town (from San Francisco)and this is my first yelp review. I must admit I had my hesitations when I first entered Maynards. It was very busy when I came in on a Friday night and I felt a little awkward as I was alone, there was a couple spots at the bar and I did not want to wait for a table. Lars the bartender was very friendly and accomidating with my wine selection. They offer the full menu at the bar and upon first glance I immediately ordered the "Poutine" house made fries smothered in short rib gravy and "squeaky cheese" which the bartendered explained were cheddar cheese curds and that this is a standard dish accross Canada. It was awesome! I ordered the"ironwood" which is a manly drink of house infused smoked brisket bourbon, Carpano Antica and some other things I've never heard of... the drink was soooo good! I also ordered a NY steak and a side of brussel sprouts and bacon, easily the best steak I've ever had. The head chef even came out and checked in to make sure my expirience was up to par(first class all the way!)All in all the service, atmoshere, food and drink were top notch. Reminds me of home. I will return! read more

My wife and I just returned from a trip to the southwest yesterday and I make it a habit of writing reviews for restaurant experiences that stick out in my mind, both good and bad. If I have an unremarkable experience, then I won't take the time to tell about it. But, if I dine out and have either a wonderful, or terrible experience, I take the time to tell about it so my fellow travelers can hopefully get the most out of their money. I read several reviews of Maynard's Market and Kitchen prior to deciding to take my wife out to dinner at said establishment on Friday, July 19th 2013. From what I had read, most people have had fairly positive experiences when dining at Maynard's, so I was expecting the same. The atmosphere at Maynard's definitely has it's pros and cons. It is somewhat plainly decorated. The railroad theme of the restaurant does give it some degree of charm and the ceiling is beautifully done. But, the restaurant is very dark and, despite the fact that it was rather slow when we went out to eat, it was considerably noisy. The service at Maynard's is prompt and professional. Had it not been for our server, the entire experience at Maynard's would have been horrible. I will get into more detail about that in a moment. I ordered the New York strip steak from their menu and my wife, being a vegetarian, ordered their summer vegetable plate. My wife was not pleased at all with her selection. While the chef clearly tried to make a dish that was creatively done, the vegetables were bland and unremarkable. For the price we were paying ($21) it was a rather meager portion of food that seemed to lack the passion that some of the other dishes on the menu had put into their creation. I ordered my steak medium. The server told me what to expect when ordering my steak at that temperature. When it came out, part of my steak was cooked to my liking, but half of it was very undercooked. So, I asked the server if he could have the kitchen cook it a little more for me. This is the part of my dining experience when things went from unsatisfactory to appalling. Our server (Henry) took the steak back to the chef to explain the situation. We were sitting at one of the smaller tables close to the kitchen, so I was able to hear most of what the chef had to say since he decided to shout at everyone within earshot, including the server who was doing nothing more than trying to make sure we had an enjoyable experience. The chef said something to the effect of how sick he is of all of the "idiots" who come to dine at their establishment who he asked rhetorically if "...they have ever gone out to eat in their entire lives?". I worked in the service industry for ten years before beginning work in my current career field. I worked in every position there is to work in the restaurant business and my wife and I have traveled the world over and eaten in some of the finest restaurants. Firstly, had the steak been prepared the way that I had ordered it and was told it would be prepared, everything would have been fine. But, it was not prepared that way and I merely wanted to see the steak brought up to the temperature that I desired. The chef clearly thought that it was already cooked perfectly and that I must be some sort of moron for not agreeing. Chef Buzzalini needs to realize one very important thing: it doesn't matter how perfectly he thinks something is prepared. What he should be concerned with is whether or not his clientele agree with him. He is not the one who is sitting down to dine and spend his own money. It wouldn't matter if I had never eaten out in my entire life. If I'm not happy with what has been placed in front of me, it is his job to do what is necessary to make sure I am. He clearly seems to think that he is more knowledgeable and cultured than anyone else, though. The only saving grace during our entire experience was our server. He was very accommodating, professional and diplomatic. I was also rather put off by the way that Chef Buzzalini spoke to his staff. When our server took my food back to the kitchen, the chef was rude and condescending to him for seemingly no reason. So, I made a point of paying attention to the way that he conducted himself with the rest of his staff. I'm well aware of the fact that the restaurant business is fast-paced and high-stress at times. But, the restaurant was not very busy while we were there, so the fast-pace-induced stress shouldn't have been a factor in how he was behaving. I observed the chef and his behavior for the remainder of our stay at Maynard's and he was rude and condescending with a number of his staff members. He needs to realize that that sort of behavior can have a very negative impact on his staff and their entire performance. I am always willing to give a restaurant two chances. So, the next time my wife and I are in Tucson, I would like to dine at their establishment again and see if I can hopefully have a more positive experience. read more

I've only been here for breakfast but their food is incredible. You're obviously going to be paying a little more money for it than a lot of places but the food really is much better quality. The coffee is amazing as well. I will definitely be coming here for other meals to try that as well. read more

Poor service but really enjoyed the ambiance of this charming historic building and good food. We visited for the first time tonight for our 10th anniversary. We made reservations but when we arrived we were completely ignored for several minutes, even though we were the only ones there. The hostess and several servers walked right by us standing then sitting right by the hostess station in the entry. Once she finally did acknowledge us and seat us, our server took a few minutes to arrive and also was rude and not overly helpful. We don't need anyone to make a fuss over us but it would've been nice to acknowledge the special occasion which brought us to your restaurant (which was noted on our reservation), or ask if it was our first time and help familiarize us with your menu or specialities. The food was really good. Overall though a disappointing experience. We don't get to go out and enjoy expensive dinners often so it's frustrating when we tried to go somewhere for a special occasion and feel like we were ignored or a bother. read more

We happened to be in Tucson and yelped good places to eat. We happened upon Maynards Marketplace. My husband ordered their pastrami sandwich/ruben. He raved about that sandwich for weeks. We happened to be in Tucson again this weekend and he made me try the ruben. I was not disappointed at all. It was fabulous. (I am not a huge pastrami fan). Maynards informed us they make their own pastrami. They also use fresh ingredients from their garden outside. Highly recommend eating at Maynards. We will next time were in Tucson. read more

Interesting culmination of view points and experiences at Maynard's. I went for dinner and I must say that for Tucson this is pretty close to as good as it gets. We were first asked if we had reservations which we did not, and being grad weekend we thought we were screwed but the hostess got us a cute table for two with a flower and candle included. The service was on point. We had water, bread and butter, and our drink order in within a few minutes of being seated. Our waitress was very nice and good at her job. The drinks (caprese martini, dead mans handle) were f-in delicious. We ordered the grilled apple bruschetta to start and it was so damn good, I could eat it daily. The flavor combinations were very well executed. The grilled apple with the brie, balsamic reduction, prosciutto, and arugula just set each other off, yummy! The bread was fresh out of the oven, pipping hot and yummy as well. For our main entrees we had the halibut special and the red bird. My halibut was really quit excellent. It was cooked to the tee, I am talking they pulled it out of the pan within a 30 second period that equaled halibut perfection. Again the flavor combinations with the tomato's, sweet pea sauce/puree, asparagus, and leeks or onions was wonderful and the presentation was very well done as well. The red bird was some of the most perfectly done chicken we have ever had. The mustard sauce was so delicate that the two together was this juicy flavor fandango! It came with a side of mac & cheese. Wow four different cheeses that were creamy rich and fabulous together. It was nice and well done on top with the bread crumbs and everything. We didn't have traditional dessert but I did order the chocolate/raspberry martini that was good enough for me. The whole experience left an great taste in my mouth. The atmosphere was rich and soothing, dark wood, metal, great patio and location. I can't wait to sell another house so I can celebrate in style once more! read more

Everything about Maynard's is top notch. The urban, historic environment is just the start of it- outdoors and from the indoor dining area you see the trains pass. Maynard's anchors the historic train depot in the heart of downtown, and the decor honors this heritage - the ceiling alone is a work of art. Since I live in the neighborhood, I have been there many times, and have NEVER had less than friendly, smart, professional service. The food is unique and stunningly designed and prepared, unlike some other fine dining which mixes so many flavors that every dish seems similar. And wine - and specialty drinks - and wonderful bartenders. If you have not been, you really must go. read more

What a total disappointment. Fake French food in a smelly Tucson environment. Chef seems to think he is invincible. What a crock... Save your money and go to Feast or somewhere the cooks are talented. read more

I came to this place for the first time on a Friday night with my parents and boyfriend. We came after dinner to check out the patio and enjoy a drink. The staff was super friendly and the drinks we ordered were delicious, they had a vinyl DJ which was pretty unique. The patio was beautiful just a tad noisy once in awhile when a train goes by, but hey that's part of the experience! It was my Fathers birthday so we ordered him the cake flight which was very delicious and something fun to eat to celebrate his birthday. Really enjoyed this place and can't wait to try it out for dinner! read more

Visited Maynard's market for lunch while in town to ride the tour de Tucson. We sat outside in the patio and enjoyed a delicious sandwich with salad! The help were so friendly and even took the time to help me select an awesome bottle of wine to take home. Definitely worth checking this little jewel of a place out! read more

SADLY, Maynards has changed and not for the better. We have gone there for years and taken guests from UK, China, Madagascar, France, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Austria other countries and many states of the US...for mostly good results. We have loved to sit out on their patio with warm breezes blowing along with train whistles tooting and rushing by. It was a nostalgic reliving of times past. And the food was good, sometimes very good. But the menu has changed along with probably the chef. Tant pis. Great dishes like the veal chop (gone) to bouillabaisse (a mere shadow of its precursor) are no longer extant. Vanilla duck,confused- Fresh Fish, overcooked on two occasions- Short rib- greasy. But not all is lost. You may still go and enjoy the ambiance... Cheese Board, still good- Oysters, probably the freshest in town, Steak Tartare, good. So go for the appetizers al fresco, the ambiance and the roaring trains as they rush past (don't plan to talk then.) Service is slow, usually but who cares? You'll be forced to sit quietly and soak up atmosphere.Skip dinner. read more

My kids took me to the Mother's Day brunch at Maynard's. $55.00 per person, and we all left hungry and disappointed with the meal. There was a choice of one of three appetizers: 1) half a bowl of corn veloute (cold soup); or 2) small plate of salad greens with dressing; or 3) a 2"x4" scantily topped piece of focaccia bread. For the main course, I chose the scallops and risotto. I GOT ONLY 2 SCALLOPS with a small scoop of risotto!!! One of my sons chose the Chicken Milanese and it was so bland. I tasted it and it reminded me of a low calorie TV dinner. For dessert, there were only two choices: 1) a thin 4"diameter chocolate mint cheesecake tart; and 2) a piece of apple custard cake that two of us had ordered and both of us had left half eaten, which says plenty because both of us were still hungry. The $9.00 drinks were weak and flat. The service was passable, but our 8-ounce water glasses and the bottle of water left at the table were empty for over 15 minutes. We needed that water to help us get the food down. Ambience with the train sounds in the distance was nice. Not one of us complained while we were at the restaurant because it was special opportunity for us all to get together and talk and we wanted so badly for it to be a great time, but I'm pissed that my kids - who don't make a lot of money - must have spent their whole paychecks on that meal and they got gipped. Never going again. read more

This is a dinning gem in downtown Tucson. Like the Club Congress this setting has become an anchor for downtown living. Whether it is a special occasion or a casual lunch on the patio, Maynards should be high on your short list of dinning options. This place is a Tucson treat. The food is consistently superior to excellent and the atmosphere is true Tucson. Do yourself a favor, give Maynards a try soon. You won't regret it! read more

The patio here is great, sitting inside at the counter top is great. Very attentive, friendly staff. Had the sausage pizza, the salad with pork belly and brioche with a glass of red wine..recommended by an employee. It was pretty good. Its nice and bright..you can go there to catch up with a friend, have brunch/lunch,..go work on your laptop and its all right downtown. Go see for yourself. They have a huge selection of wine too if you're into that kinda thing. tons of pastries and coffee/espresso as well. read more

Went to Maynards for dinner last night! All staff were very nice and helpful! Food was delicious! However, each step of the meal process: ordering drinks, getting drinks, ordering dinner, getting dinner, on and on took extended periods of time. Either the kitchen is very, very slow or the waiter, who was great, has too many tables and can not keep up with them. Certainly every time we saw him he was rushing around. My suspicion is that this place is under staffed. read more

I hoped to have lunch at Maynard's yesterday (Sunday 11/12/17) 1pm, but alas they were only serving brunch, fine, I figured such a nice restaurant would have a great omelet, so I ordered one with crab, cheese, and greens, sounds great, no? Not, I have no idea what the greens were, but they were not cooked at all and it was like eating plastic. Ok I was on a schedule to be somewhere by 2ish, so I just pulled the greens, and tried to eat the rest....I did tho I was so disappointed....this was like a tortilla wrapped around a couple of cold crab chunks, no cheese was in evidence. The 'omelet' was obviously was 'pre-prepared, no fluffy eggs here....tough and tasteless! The fact that the food appeared in less that 5 minutes after placing the order, should have been a clue. read more

This place is awesome for drinks... we didnt try any food but seriously one of the best lattes I've ever had anywhere-- locally roasted beans and just perfect! I was staying at the Congress and coming over for the lattes & didn't realize they had cool cocktails until a day before we left so we were only able to try a couple BUT if you like interesting drinks, you have to check it out! The Caprese Martini is awesome... its vodka muddled with basil with a balsamic reduction on 1/2 the rim and a skewer of mozzarella/tomato and basil... theres also a cool whisky muddled with blackberries thats great... can't remember the name of that one though... Prices were high for Tucson BUT cheap for cocktails like these.. I want to say about $8 each... really worth checking out if you can! read more

Long overdue addition to the downtown restaurant scene-festive bar with great cocktails, much fun watching the trains speed by. I especially like the market sandwiches (best bargain in town at $4.00!) and the blue cheese lettuce salad. A place to return to again and again. read more

We had dinner here tonight and it was fantastic. I had the fish special of the day, it was a red fish lightly pan fried, with creamy polenta and fresh vegetables with a wine reduction- delicious!! For dinner, with the high prices and ambience, I expected perfection at Maynards and was sorely disappointed in the food for two of the four dishes we had. Let me start by saying that the female server we had was excellent!!! That is where the excellence ends however. We went to Maynard's on September 21st to celebrate a birthday. It was a special night. My husband ordered the steak and he said it was great. Also ordered by one of our party was a hamburger and that was also great. I ordered the pork shank. It should have been falling off the bone. I found it tough. The dish should have come with a nice starch also, or grits, or more vegetables - something!!! and it didn't. The flavor was good, but too tough. Now the really bad part; my daughter ordered the special of the day which was three big sea scallops. The first time they came out and were undercooked and quite rubbery. After sending that one back, the second batch was slightly less rubbery, but still VERY much underpar. They were bland, as were all of the vegetables surrounding them. We could taste a bit of tarragon and that is all. The scallops tasted only like brown butter. My daughter was embarrassed and kept them, but I would have sent them back. She was so disappointed. It really ruins a special night when the food is not up to snuff. Especially when you have to sit there and see a loved one hating the food!! Maybe it was the chef? Or maybe they need to recheck the food prep -- recipes, but in any case, ruining it for my daughter ruined the experience for me even if my pork had not been so tough. When you pay a high price for a meal, you expect each meal ordered to be something quite special and executed to a T. What a disappointment. I felt bad that my husband had to pay for it. I will not be back to Maynard's. What a crapfest altogether. read more

The Market is going downhill, recently I went and they were selling Costco muffins in the baked goods. After I wrote a complaint, they started carrying Frogs Bakery stuff, which is ok but overpriced. The last few times I've been there the food in the hot grab and g section has been soggy (burritos in tin foil) or burned (pizza). I do like the farmer's market on Saturdays though, especially the little baby goats the soap guy brings. read more

We went to Maynard's as we were passing through Tucson, and it was easy to get to from the freeway. We didn't really know what to expect, but we had read that they served salads, so we decided to try it. All I can say is the food and service were great! We both ordered the 1/2 sandwich and salad. My friend ordered the ham and Brie and the spring greens salad. I had wanted the chicken salad croissant, but they were out of chicken salad (we did get there around 2:30) so I also ordered the ham and Brie sandwich, but with the avocado and grapefruit salad. The sandwiches were sooo good, and the avocado and grapefruit salad was very refreshing! This is definitely a restaurant I would go to again! read more

We had dinner at Maynard's last night and while the service was quite good and the food delicious, we were seated at a table for two right under the hostess desk. But that was a small disappointment because that little table for two was right next to a table for 6 women who were out for a good time. It was so loud we were unable to even lean across the table to hear each other. We had a reservation, and by the way, my husband was asked if it was a special occasion and he told them it was our anniversary but no one mentioned it. We asked for another table, but the hostess said there was none. Perhaps they should not have taken our reservation for that time. Disappointing evening. read more

Food was good ,nothing great with the prices they charge. A glass of wine was $12......at least fill the glass half way!!!!! $2 service charge for sharing a salad!!! C'mon!!!!! Heard so many awesome things about this place and came with some pretty high expectations. Got there about 15 minutes before lunch started, my bad, so went outside to wait til it started. I didn't understand why they couldn't take our order and wait until 11 to put it in that way we didn't walk back and forth, but not every restaurant thinks of these things. Was very disappointed, stood next to the register to give my order and when someone FINALLY came to take it, he was obviously not trained to take an order. He kept fumbling with the register and had to ask someone where something was. Why wasn't there a proper trainer on hand? Crazy. I ordered two pepperoni pizzas and a grilled cheese, there were 3 of us. We took our number and sat outside. The atmosphere gets one of the stars, and the grilled cheese got the other one. Both pizzas were completely black on the bottom. Ridiculous! I didn't have time to get it fixed, because of my silliness in coming 15 minutes early, so we ate the toppings and left. Service was lacking, food was mediocre at best and definitely would not recommend! read more

Went to MM after enjoying many meals at cupcafe. I went midweek after lunch, i was the only person in line. The coffee counter was enpty however female worker was present and acknowledged with be right with you. Male server comes to counter acknowledges, with same. The food prep person after 15 minutes asks can I start anything for you? i can not take orders but start the prep. I had a bowl of soup- parsnip parsley, taste lacked the parsley, was served with stale bread. Sadly had to wait for the slacker wait staff, to pay and eat. Took TWO HOURS to get our food. When it did arrive, the bernaise sauce had a skin over it, pomme frites cold and overcooked (hard and dry)mayonnaise was so cold it had started to separate....the only explanation was that there was a "problem in the kitchen". No other offers or apologies from the waiter. This was a Monday night and there were only four other tables filled. Will NEVER waste my time or money here again. I have lived in Tucson many years and Maynards is always the place I take out of town guests to show off Tucson. Maynards is a trip back into elegant time. The decor takes you back as do the wonderful vintage cocktails. The food is excellent. I always order mussels, pomme frittes, the pizza and the fish of the day. I am never disappointed. The service is excellent and the owners are almost always on the premises to warmly greet their patrons. I love the ambiance, the food and the friendly staff. I was really psyched to go check this restaurant out after reading the reviews...A friend & I went on a Saturday evening during Happy Hour that goes 4 'til 6 PM. We got there about 20 minutes before the menu changed to the higher prices. The hostess was very pleasant and told us they were a bit "flexible" on the HH cut off time. I had called the day prior to clarify exactly what food items were on the HH menu. We pulled up seats to the bar, and I asked the bartender what items were included...I think he told me the mussels and two other items. Had I not called the day before, I wouldn't have known that the $13 burgers, were included in the $7 per dish menu. He was incredibly rude, and after ordering 2 burgers, said "You got a really good deal!" with a sour face. Seriously??? The burger was fabulous, and incredibly rich with bleu cheese, bacon and a giant portion of pommes frites. (I had to take half of my plate home) My friend had a glass of wine, myself some great draft beer. Then to top it off I ordered the $8-"Turtle" sundae with organic ice cream and homemade hot fudge and caramel. It was over the top! I had a tough time finishing it as it was SO sweet, I got a sugar headache & buzz better than the beer. Had my friend indulged a bit more on the desert, it would have been fine. I love the decor, and you can dress yourself up or down, but NOT the place to wear a wifebeater top. I wore a long summer dress. This place has class, except for the bartender that was on duty that night. read more
