Came here for a special occasion a few years ago and did the tasting menu for 2 with the ribeye selection. The interior was gorgeous. Food was divine and service was perfect. We had a sommelier guide us through the wine menu. The portions were extremely generous, and we took some home. The entree on the tasting menu only came with couscous which I love, but my partner preferred it came with rice. Word of mouth is portions have shrunk with inflation rising over the years. Michelin star or not, this culinary Odyssey is a must for any righteous gastronaut. A little hard to find (located down an alley), best to get a ride as parking is very difficult to find. From the moment you enter, your senses are immersed in visual and olfactory wonders. The fragrance of the central open fire where meals are prepared sets the mood. High energy is the mood. A super friendly and knowledgeable team guided us through our Tawle multi course meal. It is a total epicurean overload. The star of the show was the slow roasted lamb shoulder...all 40 ounces! Fall off the bone juicy tenderness and incredible flavor. Way too much for 2 people (our third dropped out...their loss!!). With the first 2 courses and fresh made naan, we were pretty stuffed by the time the lamb came out (yep, take home). Oh, don't forget the included dessert. What an incredible experience! This is a place to go for more than a meal. It's definitely an experience I won't forget. My husband and I went to DC to visit our daughter and told her to make a reservation somewhere that she's been wanting to try. She knew immediately where she wanted to go and while it took quite the effort to get reservations because they go quickly, she was able to get us in at 9:00 pm. Walking in I knew it was going to be special. They have a door that is beautiful and sets the tone for the cultural food experience. The staff was amazing! Friendly and helpful and the ambiance was incredible. The fire right there so you can see them cooking the pita and the fish and steak and lamb. We decided to try the tasting menu so we could get a large variety of items and it was a treat! I tasted two different wines and chose a bottle that paired perfectly with the steak and the Branzino. We had cocktails to sip while we worked our way through the first course and each bite, each sip was a celebration on the palate! The creamy hummus, the pickled vegetables, the fresh pita, the salad, it was so good that we didn't pace ourselves well and were getting full by the time our meat dishes arrived. The Branzino was fabulous! Perfectly cooked, flaky, flavorful and the presentation was beautiful. The Rib Eye was my husband's favorite because it was also perfectly cooked and so tasty. I would have a hard time choosing something else because these were so well prepared and made the meal! The dessert was light and if I could have eaten more I would have. My family finished it up without a problem though. For the amount of food, the ambiance and the quality of service, it was worth the price and lived up to the hype. 10/10 food experience! Been dying to try this restaurant for a couple years, due to all the accolades. It did not disappoint. While Bazaar Meats in Vegas is still my number 1 seed, Maydan comes in at a strong #2 and is without a doubt the best veggie meal I've ever had. We did the Tawle menu which i highly recommend, but be sure to come on an empty stomach. Everything from the service, the decor, and food was top notch. Highlights include the spreads, Halloumi, Chickpeas, and the Califlower entree was deliciously tender and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend the cocktails, in particular the espresso martini. Fun, Fun, Fun! I just had a great time at Maydan. I can see why you have to wait a little to get reservations on a Friday night. This place is just awesome. I took the chance of showing up when they first opened, so that I can a seat at the bar. I'm glad, that I did because the seats filled up quick. The host did try to accommodate us by offering us a table, with a 1.5 hour time limit, since we didn't have reservations, but once we were able to see that the bar area was empty we chose that option. Okay on with the review. The restaurant is located off the main road and in an alley. It's a little hard to find, because there isn't a huge sign or anything, so just look for the green door. Once you enter, there's a vestibule area that cuts you off from seeing the entire restaurant. But once you open the second door to the restaurant, bam!! It's almost like you're been shipped to another country. There's a huge oven in the middle of the restaurant; with a beautiful bar and high ceilings. There is seating on both levels and you can see the oven from any seat. This over is where the prepare the meats and bread and probably everything else. It was such a joy to see. Words advice, try not to sit close to the oven because it can be quite hot. As far as the food goes, it's Mediterranean, so a lot of spreads, salads, kebabs, etc. we tried the taste option, where you try a little bit of everything. I can only speak about the food since I dined at the sister restaurant Medina. It was pretty hard to get a reservation for the dining room at Maydan. I ordered à la carte from Maydan's menu and had the ribeye, branzino, hummus, carrots and halloumi. I enjoyed everything except the ribeye. Even cooked medium it was not tender and it lacked flavor. Sitting up stairs provides you an amazing view of the oven and open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant on the first floor. The service was amazing and our server recommended our dishes. Eclectic restaurant located behind a blue door at the end of an ally. From the moment we walked in everyone was really nice. We went in for a casual dinner date and at first thought that we could tackle the Tawle tasting menu, but at 830pm we would've been in over our heads so we opted for a la carte ordering. Note that if there's four or more the Tawle menu is required. To start we had the Muhammara with the housemade fresh bread. There's a stove in the entrance where it's made that is a focal point of the restaurant. The spread was delicious. We also tried the hummus that was given to us in error instead of the carrots we ordered. They told us just to keep the item and they would get the carrots to us. I didn't enjoy the hummus it seemed to be lacking an element making it bland. We ordered saffron couscous and the flavor again was not great, the saffron was muted. The star of the show was the Sayyadiah aka grilled butterflies Branzino. This dish was flavorful with a little kick but not too much and the fish was cooked to perfection. The carrots arrived as we were finished up. We each ate one since they were so late and we were really full. The harissa made its mark, but the carrots were a tad undercooked. Lastly our drinks were unfortunately not memorable. The Ottoman Old Fashioned was served in a small cup with a big ice cube rather than a larger glass with a big ice cube and the Amardine NA beverage really did not stand out, just felt like weakly flavored water. I got horrible food poisoning as did another person in my party. We both got their roasted sweet potatoes to go on 3/19, this was the only thing we ate in common, and both of us were so sick to the point of needing IV fluids and IV meds. I believe it must have been cross contamination from a dirty surface or dirty gloves or knife. They need to review their food handling practices. I have eaten at many different restaurants in many different counties and never experienced food poisoning this badly. I saw a review on trip advisor complaining of food poisoning in the past as well. read more

I've dined here before and had an exceptional experience, which made this visit all the more disappointing. I brought a group of colleagues--many of whom are both long-time clients and serious food enthusiasts--for what was meant to be a special evening. One guest has mobility limitations, so when I made the reservation weeks in advance, I was very clear about accessibility needs. I corresponded with the restaurant ahead of time and was specifically directed to book a separate dining space with minimal stairs. I also prepaid a $200 deposit and selected a timed seating. When we arrived on time, there were no notes on our reservation, and we were directed to a table that required navigating multiple stairs--completely unsuitable for our group. What followed was particularly concerning: rather than focusing on resolving the issue, the manager twice lectured me about my reaction to the situation, despite the fact that the error was entirely on the restaurant's side and involved a clearly communicated accessibility need. After eventually reviewing the prior correspondence and acknowledging the mistake, we were told our reserved space would be available shortly, as the current party was "on dessert." In reality, we were not seated for approximately an hour. During that time, we were offered an interim table in an uncomfortably hot downstairs area near an open fire, which was not a viable option, so we ended up waiting outside. A glass of champagne was provided, but it did not feel like a thoughtful or appropriate response given the circumstances. By the time we were finally seated, the evening had already been significantly disrupted. The pacing of the multi-course meal no longer worked, and by the time main courses arrived, we were no longer able to enjoy them--most were left untouched--and we declined dessert in order to avoid extending an already very long evening. To add to the frustration, the $200 deposit was not applied to the bill and had to be pointed out before it was corrected. This experience was particularly disappointing given how highly I regarded this restaurant from a prior visit. So Maydan has a ridiculous "policy" that if you cancel a reservation within 24 hours of it, you have to pay them $50. And on the chance I finally found a reservation there for the next day, I held it for 1 hour and 28 minutes, and Maydan took $50 for it. While their policy allows for "discretion" on waiving the fee, my voicemail and email to the restaurant have so for gone unanswered. Talk about a dining experience!! I will forever take a friend visiting DC to this place because it was a 10/10. I came to Maydan for a weekday dinner. Maydan is nestled down an alley right off of 14th street. When you walk through the front door you feel like you've been transported to another country. The restaurants name means "gathering place" or "square," and the atmosphere is just that. When you walk into the dining area you can see right into the kitchen where there's a large grill. The ceilings are extremely high and it just feels warm and cozy inside. Maydan serves Middle Eastern cuisine including some of my favorites ... + the spreads especially the hummus are lick the plate worthy + pickled veggies were delicious, I think I had a pickled tomato and I was shocked how many of them I ate + Chicken Shish Taouk was cooked to perfection + Sayyadiah or the branzino was also cooked to perfection + The lamb shoulder was also delicious but I couldn't eat too much of it because I was stuffed by this point. + You must try the cocktail, want a G&T because it was delightful and refreshing. It features lebanese gin, cucumber tonic water and orange blossom water with western asian botanicals ... mmhm mmhm mmhm tell me that doesn't sound fire. Lastly!!! I can not forget to highlight the impeccable service!!! I forgot our servers name but she was the goat. She's been working at Maydan for years and truly knew the menu and the restaurant, in and out. For $500+, one would expect not to sit in an alley, literally. We were seated in a Covid style outdoor seating area ... in the alley outside the building. My view was the adjacent building's steel garage door. Sirens and traffic noise didn't add to the ambiance either. Shocking! The food was good, but it would've been helpful if I could've seen it. The rope lighting on top of the plastic structure was not sufficient. I understand restaurants profile customers and newcomers don't get preferential seating. But to sit in the alley, and have to ask permission to use the restroom because you're entering the actual restaurant Proved a little too much. If a restaurant is full for an evening, it should NOT take reservations. I would've rather not eaten there than spent over $500 in that environment. read more

i had high expectations for maydan. the ambiance is unbeatable, with a large fire in the center of the restaurant. we sat upstairs, which was slightly more secluded the menu isn't too extensive but still diverse. we got muhammara (incredible) and hummus (fell flat). the carrots were also deliciously sweet, and the halloumi was definitely the best i've had. the chicken kebabs were also flavorful, although it's best to eat them asap. the cauliflower was as big as my head. the lamb shoulder was $110 which in my opinion was overpriced--i would've expected a more creative spin, but the cauliflower, kebabs, and lamb shoulder had the same toppings which was a bunch of pickled onion. tldr: good food but the flavor profiles were average i also see why it lost its star, the service was just standard read more

Went here for our anniversary dinner on 11/11. Getting reservations is a challenge and you have to be online at 10am to book it. 10.05 is too late! This was my first Michelin star restaurant and one of the main reasons we chose this was the food was very vegetarian friendly. We opted for the tawale menu which is a mix of appetizers, hot sides and one entree per table + 1 dessert. Everything was delicious but we were unfortunately too full by the time we were ready for the entree so ended up taking most of the entree and dessert home. The Georgian oven in the middle of the space add a different kind of charm and is much welcome on a cold night! The service was hot and cold and as with most upscale places it included a 20% service fee. Tip: maybe skip the tawale experience and go for a la carte if your party size is 3 or less. read more

I had the greatest first date of my life here. Just order the tasting menu and you'll be so happy. The ambiance is great, especially if you grab a seat by the grill where you can see the food being freshly prepared. It can be a little toasty depending on where you sit so I would wear a short sleeve. Starting with the food - it's incredible. Just make sure to not make the same mistake we did and come hungry. What's great is even if you have leftovers your food will get expertly packed. An important tip is that the Al La Carte menu is only available for parties less than 4. Our waiter, Lucas, took such great care of us. He even treated us to a custom Mezcal shot which was phenomenal. The food here!!!!! Just some of the best I've ever had. The restaurant is very intimate and dimly light, making for a nice date night. The oven being a part of the decor is also a very nice design touch. I wasn't able to secure a reservation, but we arrived about 10 minutes before their 5pm opening and there was a small line of walk-ins forming at the door. I was able to get bar seating for my party of 2. It worked out just fine, although I would have preferred a table with the amount of plates coming out with the Tawle tasting menu. Everything we ate was absolutely superb and fresh! Now, they are very much on the expensive side. The Tawle menu is $85 a person, which I'm still trying to figure out how that split works, as we shared an entree. So if there are 3 people, how does an entree split work? BUT because it was supremely good food, I didn't mind the splurge. But I do feel like it gets roped off into a special occasion place versus being able to enjoy the food on a more consistent basis. For 2 people with the Tawle menu and 2 drinks (one being non-alcoholic) the bill was almost $300. They charge an automatic service fee and still expect for patrons to leave a tip. I went to visit Maydan with friends last night for a birthday! If it wasn't for my friend, I think it would have taken me a minute to find the entrance to the restaurant but once you enter the restaurant, the ambiance and vibes are EVERYTHING. We checked in and within a minute were guided to our table, the hostess walked us through the restaurant while explaining the where the bathrooms are and how our food was being prepared which was so cool. We sat down at our table and were greeted by our server within what felt like seconds, which is always a good sign for service. He immediately asked about allergens (which is important to me because of my tree nut allergy), he walked us through the entire menu and let us know what could be modified and what couldn't. Service overall was a true 5/5, it really made the experience feel extravagant. I've had experiences at Mediterranean restaurants where I've come into contact with tree-nuts despite alerting them to my allergy, but the service was so good and attentive, I did not feel worried. The food! Truly amazing, we ordered off the A la carte menu, and were so pleased with out choices. Everything that came off the grill, had the perfect balance of being charred well and also coming out hot. The charred carrots and Halloumi were both out of this world. The halloumi came to the table sizzling and the glaze on it was addictive. I am not a fan of the texture of zucchini but the seasoning on top of was delicious! Shrimp and Chicken Kebabs were both cooked perfectly, no chewiness and timed to perfection. The only dish I thought could've had more impact was the sweet potatoes. You had to dip them in the sauce on the bottom of the plate and I wish the flavor would've been throughout the potato. We were not in the mood for cocktails and were celebrating a birthday, so the server brought us all NA wine so we could still cheers our friend. They also gave us this delicious mint tea when we arrived, that for a non tea drinker made me re-think tea. The front door is down an alley (not a creepy one) and once through the door, you get hit with thumping music and the main grill area. It's like being transported to a different world. We were seated on the second floor and had a nice view of most of the restaurant. We ordered the tawle, which is the tasting menu. It seemed to contain pretty much every dish on the a la carte menu. The courses come out in four groups, small bites, then salad (fatoush), chicken kebabs and roasted carrots. Then the mains. We selected the branzino and the ribeye. I will say, I'm generally not a huge fan of middle eastern food. My wife loves it so I'm always trying to find it. But Maydan impressed me. Every dish had deep, complex flavors and textures. The carrots were a particular standout for me. The branzino was also one of the best prepared I've ever had. Start to finish, our multi course dinner for four took less than 90 minutes. I've dined at Maydan three times (most recently Thanksgiving weekend) and the food continues to be outstanding -- truly 5-star quality. We were a party of six and did the Tawle menu. The mezze, spreads, and their incredible tanoor bread were exceptional -- vibrant, flavorful, and generously portioned. The vegetable dish, salad, and chicken kebabs were beautifully executed. The branzino was excellent. The issue was the ribeye. For six people, we were instructed to order two center plates, so we chose the branzino and ribeye. The ribeye that arrived was roughly the same 8-10 oz portion I've previously received when dining as a party of two. While we did have the second entrée (the branzino), realistically for six people there should have been a third portion of protein to make it feel balanced. Each of us got essentially one slice of steak. When we asked about it, we were eventually told the steak portion was intentionally smaller and that they increase sides like chicken and salad to "compensate." We were also told that even if there had been three of us, we still would have received one steak portion -- just with more sides. In other words, adding guests doesn't necessarily mean more of the featured entrée until you cross whatever internal threshold they've set. That was surprising, especially given the family-style format. To their credit, they offered to bring more meat and removed one guest's portion from the bill. But what we wanted wasn't a discount -- it was consistency and transparency. The food remains phenomenal (5 stars). The service and handling of the situation? 2 stars. At this level and price point, portion clarity matters -- especially when guests are specifically looking forward to a signature dish. The ambiance hits you first, coming into the seating area from a sealed door to see a bar and a fire pit, which is followed by the sounds and smells of burning wood, searing meat, and plates of highly seasoned dishes being delivered to tables. The food is both incredible and comes in massive servings. We (a group of three) did the chef's tasting menu, opting for the add-on of lamb. The highlights of this (for me) included the hummus and harissa dips, the couscous (which was other worldly), and the dates from the pickle platter. We almost didn't have any room for the lamb when it arrived (which was hot, juicy, and had a beautiful salty/spicy finish). I took the leftovers home and ate it for breakfast the next two days. Maydan has a solid cocktail list, which included an old fashioned made with a coconut-washed rye (my choice) and several non-alcoholic options (which my pregnant wife appreciated and sampled amply). I had dinner at Maydan with a couple of friends last night. It had been on my list for a while, so I was really excited we were able to get a reservation. They offer a set tasting menu (Tawle menu) or a la carte dinner (for tables of four or fewer). We decided on the a la carte menu for our dinner. We shared a bunch of dishes a la carte: mouneh platter (assorted pickled vegetables, honey soaked dates, mint, parsley, scallions); marinated Tunisian olives (assortment of caraway and anise marinated olives); hummus (chickpeas, tahini, lemon); halloumi (Egyptian peanut dukkah, wildflower honey); grilled cabbage (baharat, keshkamel, barberries); za'atar roasted eggplant (pickled veggies, toum, tahina, za'atar); chicken shish taouk (garlic, fenugreek, pomegranate molasses); mushroom kebab (oyster mushrooms, cumin, red shatta, tahina, blue fenugreek); and four condiments (zhough, tahina, toum, and harissa). It was way too much food for three people (by double), but I enjoyed most of the dishes. Of those we tried, my favorites were the halloumi, the cabbage, and the hummus. I'd like to go back, because our group had some food allergies and restrictions that meant I didn't necessarily order what I was drooling over on the menu (I'm dying to try their saffron couscous, swordfish belly kebab with citrus, lamb shoulder with Syrian seven spice and sumac onions)! Their beverage program is great. From cocktails to wine to NA drinks, they have something interesting for everyone. I had a glass of Lebanese orange wine followed by a vodka za'atar martini (which was fantastic). The service was also very good. Reservations at Maydan are still very hard to come by. I signed into Resy at 10:00 three weeks before the Saturday I wanted a reservation for. I clicked to make a reservation for 7:00pm indoors and then got an error saying a reservation was not available for that time. The I tried again several more times, before giving up and taking an outdoor reservation. The outdoor seating is cozy - covered and with plenty of heaters. If anything, the outdoor dining was boiling. The only bummer about the outside seating is that indoors is really vibey. We walked through to use the restrooms when we arrived and enjoyed the vibes and the music. The outdoor area is silent - no music at all. I wish they could get some of the indoor music and vibes outside! Overall, I enjoyed most of the food and the experience overall! I would like to return to try more their menu! Maybe I'll even get lucky and get an inside reservation next time! read more
