Have you ever had BAKED MOCHI?! Yeah. I know. Me neither. Mochi is something I'd consider myself a complete snob at. I can make my own mochi with paste at home and I think my family's recipe is pretty dang good! But I was not expecting Maui Bread to have baked mochi. That's right, instead of the traditional steamed mochi you see in Japan or elsewhere, it's baked at this bakery to look and feel like soft bread. We stopped by after dinner for some bread for breakfast the next morning, and were excited to see how cute the interior was and how many different ingredients and flavors the breads had. We bought the POG (passion fruit, orange and guava) bread which was pretty yummy but not entirely truthful to the mix of the three flavors, a savory danish from the cashier's table, and a baked ube mochi. The cashier also convinced my boyfriend to get the fresh coconut milk which was fresh and from the big island! It was an interesting texture because the bits of the coconut flesh were ground to tiny sand-like pieces. However, I would have preferred just a regular old coconut. I felt like not a lot of the flavors we were looking for in our items truly stood out. I think the baked ube mochi was a let down, although very pretty and well-packaged, the ube flavor didn't make its way through. The friendly cashier did mention that the other flavor they had was a more popular item...but I just thought...I'm in HAWAII I have to get some UBE! That was the only bite of ube-related-food we had the entire Maui trip. I applaud this bakery for doing so many flavors and really creating a cute atmosphere for bread. I wouldn't say it was one of the best bakeries I've visited for the bread, but it was a fun and unique experience. read more

I walked into this shop looking for coffee close to our condo. I was excited to find a mix of German and Hawaiian pastries and bread. The lilikoi sweet roll was life changing and I really enjoyed the piña colada bun. My son was also really excited about the POG juice. We ended up going back two more times in the 4 days that we were in Maui and I will be forever dreaming about their pastries and breads. The staff were also so friendly, helpful, and patient. The Hawaiian muffins were so good, as was the bacon and cheddar bread. I am hoping to return to Maui again soon to enjoy more bread! read more

I love guava so I was excited to try the passion orange guava pastry but it was not as "guava-e" as I would have liked but still delicious. In addition, they have coffee and drink samples at the counter. Lastly, this bakery is located at a strip mall and can be easily missed as there is no big sign for it. My childhood friend brought me ube bread and POG (passion fruit orange guava) bread from here when we were both visiting our folks in L.A. I think I got the loaves like a week after she arrived from Maui, and the breads were still really fresh and delicious! They smelled so fragrant out of the package and were such pretty vibrant colors when I sliced into them, a rich purple and a bright reddish-orange color. The breads were so soft and moist with a very nice crumb texture and were very tasty. My whole family loved them--even my mother, who usually complains that bakery foods are too oily and too sweet. These tasted light with just the right amount of sweetness. Can't wait to go to Maui to visit this bakery in person one day. :) read more

During our trip to Maui, we stayed in the Kihei area and discovered this little gem Maui Bread Company. We snoozed in a little bit too long so by the time we got here a lot of the popular items were either gone or running low. Thankfully they still had a lot of croissants left and of course we couldn't pick just one. We decided on the chocolate croissant with a chocolate hazelnut filling, the almond croissant with almond butter, and a pretzel croissant. As we completed our order, a man walks into the store, overhears us ordering the pretzel croissant, and states that we made an excellent choice because that's his absolute favorite. Then he walks into the back, turns out it was the owner! The friendly cashier told us he likes it so much they bake an extra one just for him everyday lol. True to his word, that pretzel croissant was amazing! All three croissants were amazingly flakey with soft layers. The almond butter had such a pronounced flavor that I've never had before so I would say that was my favorite with the pretzel coming in as a very close second. Since this bakery is highly rated on Yelp (4.5 stars with over 100 reviews at the time of this review and a few weeks ago), I decided that my husband and I should stop by here during our vacation. So we stopped by here on a Friday morning around 10 am. We were greeted by an employee behind the counter and tried a sample of the long John eclair. Then we walked around to see what goodies to buy. We ended up getting: Mac Nut Cookie, $2.69 prior to tax- I wouldn't consider this to be a cookie, as it was soft and more cake like. This is a nice large size that is great for sharing (or to eat over more than 1 sitting). You can taste macadamia nut in each bite. The cookie was not too sweet and made for a light sweet treat. Hawaiian Cookie, $2.69 prior to tax- This cookie had flavors of mango and li hing mui (salted dried plum). Like the mac nut cookie, this is also more on the cake side than a soft baked or crisp cookie. I did not get to eat any of this, but my husband did like it. Hawaiian Bread, $4.99 prior to tax- This bread has coconut, pineapple, carrot and raisins. Initially I liked this bread, but it was just too rich for me that I ended up not liking it thereafter. My husband felt the same way. Not only was the flavor a bit too much for me, but I wasn't a fan of the texture of the bread with the carrots and pineapple pieces throughout. The bread broke very easily once cut into it because of all the different pieces of fruit/ vegetable in the bread. This may be great for someone else, but wasn't for us. -------------------------------- (Total= $10.80 after tax) This bakery has a great selection of different baked goods, some that are tropical and some that are familiar (chocolate chipped, banana flavored, etc). I wished we had stopped by this bakery a 2nd time, but just didn't get a chance during our trip. Also I wished this bakery closed a little later (closes at 2 pm). The employee that rang up our transaction told us that things do run out towards closing time sometimes, so come early if you want to have a vast choice of things to buy. This is such a cute little place located at the Dolphin Plaza. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by the friendly staff and a nicely set-up shop. I really really love the wood themed interior and think the owners did a great job! They offer a variety of freshly baked goods from bread, to brownies, to manapua and everything in between. I noticed that they do have gluten free options as well like the Ube Butter Mochi & Energy Bread. Each piece is perfect to share with a friend, but I suggest grabbing couple of different things to try because each bite is delicious! I originally came here to try their chocolate croissant in hopes of reliving my time in Italy spent binge eating cornettos, but they were sold out! I was so sad, but I opted for a Blondie instead & thoroughly enjoyed it while sitting on the beach. Mmm, so good! Cutest little spot in Kihei. As soon as we walked in, the super friendly staff treated us and told us a little bit about their products (100% all natural and made from local ingredients on the island). They have a bunch of different breads, pastries, cookies, spreads, jams, etc. They had samples of all of their jams and spreads available and every single one I tried was delicious. I ended up keeping it simple and just taking some banana bread and almond croissants to go (both of which were amazing). Would definitely come back to try some of their other sweets. read more

When I went up to pay she had sold it to someone else's Didn't even apologize or nothing all she said was oh well I sold it to the previous customer so what else's you want. Ordered a coffee as well with 2 creamers. She put no creamers in my coffee. And put it at the very end of the counter to where I had to stretch my arm under their plastic shield to grab my coffee. Super friendly and helpful staff. I stopped in after seeing this on Yelp and obviously can't turn down fresh baked goods. I was offered samples of a few of the breads and was talking to the employee about what some of the customer favorites were. He was very helpful and patient especially when dealing with my super indecisive self lol. I ended up getting a Hawaiian cookie and a sweet bread with jelly filling. Tasty breads and pastries here at the Dolphin Plaza shop. We went twice during our week long stay in Kihei. The staff was very friendly and helpful during both visits. We enjoyed the k dog which is a hot dog and Portuguese sausage with mozzarella bun. It was held in a heated oven to stay warm. Really great breakfast spot! We got the Andy, Almond Croissant, and Pineapple Bread. Everything was very delicious. The pineapple bread was moist and flavorful. The almond croissant had an even distribution of cream throughout the whole thing and was not overpowering. The Andy was savory and delicious. Amazing! Super delicious baked goods for breakfast. We stopped here as a quick breakfast option on our way to do the Road to Hanna trip. The employees were SO kind and helpful. I had been eyeing Maui Bread our entire trip but we did not get a chance to visit until our last day and I am so happy we got to try it! This place is located in Kihei and it was really easy to find parking. I even flew home with everything I tried because we loved it so much and wanted to share it with our families. I cannot wait to be back next time and try more items! Hawaiian bread: This was really popular but not my favorite. There were too many flavors that threw me off, it would be a pass for me. Ube Mochi: I thought it was so unique that they cut their mochi in squares. This was perfect because the texture was much more easy to eat since the mochi was flat. I really liked the ube halaya they use! Banana Walnut Bread: I need 10 more loaves! This was my favorite item we got and I wish I can get some more of this. I know that they have a website for ordering, but I have yet to try it. This was my breakfast after my flight home and it made me miss the island so much. I really wish we got their lilikoi stuffed pastry and ube bread but unfortunately they did not have it when I visited twice. So glad we checked this place out. Delicious banana bread, pineapple bread, assorted breads and rolls. Especially nice that they have a few gluten free options which are outstanding. Check out the novelty spreads. The macadamia nut caramel butter will not disappoint! Staff are really nice and provided samples of breads for the whole family. This was a great place to find as we were staying in a condo locally. It's nice to bring in high quality breads to enjoy at our place. I saw another review mentioning Covid procedures but there was nothing to complain about from out perspective. We wore masks, as did the staff and we arrived when no other customers were inside. TLDR: SO GOOD, worth the wait in line This cute little bakery is in a strip mall next to a cafe and a gelato place. There are MANY delicious looking pastries of both the sweet and the savory varieties. There are gluten-friendly and vegan pastries as well. Because the bakery is mixed, I doubt the GF goods are contamination free, but they do individually wrap them. We picked up three types of mochi cake - ube (Japanese sweet potato), lilikoi (passion fruit), and peanut butter chocolate chip. The mochi cake is not dairy free as it contains sweetened condensed milk. We also snagged the GF banana bread for our trip to Hana the next day. All of the treats were yummy- the lilikoi a bit sweeter than the ube. My partner thoroughly enjoyed the peanut butter chocolate chip, but it wasn't for me. To be fair, I'm not big on pb so there ya go. The store opens at 7am, and there is a line pretty much at all open hours. This is partially due to COVID safety (only 4 people inside at a time), but also the space is small and you would find it hard to see all the amazing items they have if more folks were in there. The line moves quickly, I assume because folks want to get their items and dig in right away! The staff is friendly and patient - they know there are so many choices, and they will answer any questions you have. Be sure to check out the fridge at the back of the store for fresh drinks - we got DF coconut coffee and Passion fruit, Orange, Guava (POG) juice. Both were really yummy! We plan to go back every day we can - they are closed Wednesday and Thursday so be sure to plan ahead! read more

Update for those of you that were not on the up and up over pandemic time. This business has changed owners and it is SO much better! I was not at all impressed with the old Maui Bread with the local kine goodies as a lot of the bread tasted like local style airy Portuguese bread/Maui bakery style/American sliced bread with not too much taste and substance. Nothing new or special. There is a time and place for these but what this island was missing after Blue Door closed was a decent selection of artisan breads. If you can't hit the farmer's markets to catch the sourdough bread folks, or you live in south Maui this is your shop! My husband is German and I have lived in Germany and this is some legit Brötchen (bread rolls) and Brezeln (pretzels) and dark breads. We were so happy to hear of the change and the new addition to this shop. The biggest Freude (joy/pleasure) was biking to get bread just like we did over there. My husband gets homesick sometimes and this definitely made our Sonntagsfrühstück that much sweeter! Must try! Be prepared that in the mornings you might be waiting in a line. Some of the items we enjoyed and would highly recommend you try: the Hawaiian muffin - very moist and flavorful the "Andy" onion, paprika, and cheese roll - lots of smokey, cheesy flavor with a good crust, and nutty chew Lilikoi sweet bun - plenty of lovely lilikoi a.k.a. passionfruit curd, the bun was light and fluffy, not too sweet Squid ink baguette - fun color, excellent crusty baguette flavor and texture, with a hint of sweetness, pairs well with goat cheese They have quiet a selection. So glad I do not have Maui Bread a 5-minute walk from my home! We made several stops here on our morning vacation walk and fell in love with the jalapeño chile cheese rolls, the bacon cheese twist and the Portuguese sausage roll. All moist, delicious combo of flavors and crispy baked cheese on the outside. The bacon was several huge crispy strips woven throughout the roll. Go early if you want what we had! Just a few years ago, there was no place to get fresh-baked sandwich bread in Kihea. I used to go all the way to The Bakery in Lahaina, which was inconvenient since they close before noon. Maui Bread opened two years ago, and is thriving. This is a quality bakery, which was badly needed on this part of the island. Their cinnamon raisin, multigrain, and sourdough loaves are ready around 11AM daily. Come in early in the morning for fresh masaladas, sweet breads, cookies, and muffins. Their "Hawaiian Bread" has it all going on, with coconut, pineapple, mac nuts, carrot, and raisins.
